A/N: So I'm back. I've been on a Pokémon kick lately, mostly inspired by the fact that it's the end of the road for our boy Ash. I've actually had this chapter three quarters of the way done since Generation 6 when Serena was introduced. This is an Amourshipping story after all. But I decided against posting it because life got in the way and my work schedule is 12 hours a day, 6 days a week. So…..let's see where this takes us. I've got an outline as well as a list of Pokémon Ash plans to catch or the order it happens.
Quick note though: Ash is smart. But he doesn't know everything. I am trying to balance an intelligent Ash with a happy go lucky attitude like he does in the anime. This is a mix between the anime, manga, and games. Some things you may question, such as animals being in the world. They won't be a major plot device. Just used in passing. My reasoning is written at the ending of this chapter. Any other topics may be talked about in the final AN.
There will be a lot of changes in this story compared to the anime. For example(slight spoiler): Pikachu and Charmander's origin story and how they came into Ash's care are different. I guess the same could be said with some other Pokémon on his team. Enough explanations…
I hope you enjoy this fic. It took me a while to return.
Chronicles of the Chosen One: Pokémon Master
Kanto Arc
Chapter 1: Ash Ketchum
…
Pallet Town. A quiet little country town located in the Southeastern Corner of the Kanto Region. It was even quieter now that it was passed midnight on a clear night with an almost full moon and bright stars. There wasn't a cloud in sight. The residents were fast asleep at this hour. From the North were fields, upon fields of different crops and animals that fed humans. The crops would be fields of corn, grain, potatoes, or tomatoes. The animals ranged from cows to pigs, to chickens. All being raised for human consumption. Animals were a food source for both humans and creatures called Pokémon. What were Pokémon? They were magnificent creatures all with amazing powers and abilities that roamed the world alongside humans. They were, to say the least, a co-dominate power in the world, alongside humans. They were a part of everyday life, living in the wild or among humans. Some humans trained them to fight in Pokémon battles. Some trained them to perform their powers called moves for entertainment. Others used them in the work force or as service creatures. Some Pokémon, are considered legends and myths, thought to be fairytale. Pokémon even lived among the humans in this town….
The further south one traveled into the town, they'd see that the buildings came closer and closer together, eventually forming the heart of the town on the Eastern side. There was the town square which was a circular brick road with a fountain in the middle of the ring. The town Hall, several townhomes, and apartment buildings were here. The General Good's store and town radio station was right across the road with a town garden. A river ran through the town, separating it from the far east side which was home to a large laboratory with a windmill atop the hill overlooking the town. Directly West of the overlooking building on the other side of town near forest was a huge greenhouse, the Xanadu Nursery. South was a small port known as Port Pallet. It would lead off into the sea south of the Kanto and Johto regions. It didn't get much traffic save the few fishermen there.
In the Southwestern section of Pallet town was a tranquil little white two-story country house with red shingles, situated on a three-acre plot of land surrounded by a white picket fence. The little house's front door with a small overhang and porch was facing North. It was situated in the Northwestern corner of the property directly across from an open three-acre field on the other side of the dirt road. There were various shrubs and trees planted by the man of the house. A small flower garden was in the very most corner of the picket fence at the front porch. A garden with vegetables was off to the western side of the home. A light was shining through the window on the second floor of the home.
In there was a ten-year-old boy with amber eyes, messing raven hair and an angular face. He was skinny, built for running and was above average in his athleticism for a boy his age. His name was Ashton "Ash" Gray Ketchum. He laid there stretched out on his bed with his hands behind his head, staring at the fan's blades as they spun. It was a trick of the eye, to try and follow the blade without breaking eye contact. It made the fan seem almost slower. But like everything in this world, there was more to it than what one saw. He yawned, knowing that tomorrow was a big day. But it didn't matter. Whether it was or not, when his mind ran rampant on anything that he had an interest in, there was no calming it down. From an early age, he knew he was different from other kids. He had a much more…..potent interest to things than other kids. He wasn't normal. He bedroom and upbringing reflected that. A normal 10-year-old boy's room would probably be full of plush-toy's, league merchandise, or anything that could be Pokémon related. A normal 10-year-old boy would pretty much be reliant on their mother, father, or both, to take care of them; making sure their child is nourished, bathed, and responsible for the daily house chores. He had none of that given to him, because he didn't want it, even at an early age. Granted, his mother and occasionally his father, did raise him and take care of him. He gave himself too much credit. As much as he wanted to be self-sufficient, he couldn't do everything simply due to being a kid. He wasn't like a normal 10-year-old boy who was getting ready to go out and venture in the world like a regular green horn trainer. No, he knew he was different. His mentality was far superior to the average 10-year-old. He was as prepared as he could possibly be to get out in the world and venture on his own.
How was he prepared for his journey that was about to begin? Simple. It wasn't arrogance, over-confidence, or his ego showing. If that was anyone, that was Gary Oak. Don't get Ash wrong, Gary Oak was a good person, but the way he boasted about how great he was, and his competitive side often got the best of him. No, Ash was prepared because he focused on becoming the best Pokémon Trainer that he could be starting out. He wanted to be a Master ranked trainer. In order to do that, he felt that he needed to get a head start. He remembered all the struggles he had gone through while growing up. He remembered all the hard work his mother had gone through to see to that he was provided as much growth as he could have possibly had while continuing his goals.
From a young age, Ash knew he was going to do something great. What that was? He didn't know. He had this innate sense towards nature and Pokémon in general at a young age. He couldn't quite explain it, but it was the sense that seemed to evolve into a passion and thirst for more knowledge. Do not mistake his study habits. He may be considered a genius, but he was still a young boy. He wasn't on a Pokémon Researcher's level, but his education in Pokémon and other basic courses such as Math, Science, and Literature was on a Ninth-grade education level. Ash wanted to know everything he could about Pokémon. A Pokémon's behavior, their habits, their diets, breeding, biology in all branches, evolutionary stages, temperament, and how they interacted with the rest of the world. Ash learned everything he could from school at an early age and eventually Professor Samuel Oak himself. But his preparation as a Pokémon Trainer didn't stop at merely researching Pokémon as a species. No, he made sure to incorporate many fields in his preparation. One of those was learning about the natural world be it geography, botany, oceanography, ecology, etc. Another was learning about the different customs, cultures, and locations of every region he could. Social Studies/ History were probably his favorite courses. With all that mental preparation, he also worked on physical preparation, so that he could endure travelling by foot and survive out there on his own. To do so, he began to work on various fields of his own exercise and nutrition. Cardio and a little strength training were the biggest playing fields he worked in, while also working on parkour or free running. His reasoning behind that was there may come a time when he might have to climb over obstacles to escape dangerous conditions. Ash learned from his father for the few years he had come home, basic survival and advanced survival skills in order to camp it out for long periods of time, if he had to. His father also taught him self-defense, knowing that the world was a potentially dangerous place. His father taught him several ways to defend himself, some of them old fashioned, some of them new methods. All in all, Ash never once learned about Pokémon Battling from his father. He told Ash he wanted him to experience it firsthand and develop my own battle style and training methods. Of course, Ash soaked all the life lessons and skills all up like a sponge. If there was one thing Ash figured out, it was that there was always something new to learn.
It seemed impossible for someone Ash's age to have learned all of this in a short amount of time, but he had done so. Ash's peers, rivals, and those over him called him a genius, just like the geniuses of the previous generation of Pokémon Trainer's from Pallet Town. Who were the previous generation exactly? Well, they all had nicknames they were associated with, and all of them were talented Pokémon trainers back in the day. One of them was Ash's father, who everyone knew as Red. They say Ash was the spitting image of his dad when he was a kid. Gary Oak was the son of a man named Blue Oak. Leaf Meadows, a friend of Ash and Gary's was the daughter of a woman named Green. Finally, Amarillo Fields, was the daughter of a woman Yellow. The "Colors of Pallet Town" are what they called the four of them. Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow.
Everyone who knew of "Colors of Pallet Town" would agree that their children were spitting images of their parents and that they had inherited many of their traits from them. Ash's mother, often told him he was like his father, being cool calm and collected, while also sharing a passion for Pokémon. That was until Ash lost himself in a Pokémon's company and immediately tried to become friends with it. But she also said that her son was his own person as he took a wider array of interests. When Ash asked about his friends/rivals, she told him they reminded her of their parents. Gary may have a bigger ego than his father, but he was still the same as his father, as far as talent went. Leaf was just as intelligent as her mother, and very cunning. Amarillo had her mother's compassion for life and was almost as naïve.
As for Ash's relationship with his friends, it really varied. He got along pretty well with all three of them. They were all childhood friends after all and all of them attended the same school and Pokémon Camps until Professor Oak officially took them all under his wing. Everyone but Ash seemed to take only one specialization under the Pokémon Professor's training and education. Leaf concentrated her studies on Evolution. Gary concentrated on Pokémon conditioning. Amarillo concentrated on Pokémon Status. As for Ash, he had the ambition and intellect to study many fields, though he probably didn't retain as much information in these fields that his friends/rivals did due to them constantly focusing on one group. Ash was like the Jack of All Trades. Everything was perfect. Even with the friendly rivalry between Ash and Gary had been something of a blessing. It motivated the two to become better. Don't get Ash wrong, they all studied Pokémon, but some of them took it a bit more seriously than others in certain regards. It was all for the preparation of the group's separate journeys as well as learning to develop their own style of Pokémon Training. Professor Oak taught them that each trainer who developed their own method of training their Pokémon instead of copying others were the trainers who'd stand out and be truly strong.
Ash agreed wholeheartedly. This was why he began trying to figure out how to use any of the starter Pokémon in battle before he had one of them. If he had more time he could probably come up with more training/battle methods for his future Pokémon that he planned to catch.
When Ash told himself he wouldn't go out like a greenhorn trainer, he meant it. The previous two days were dedicated to the ten-year-old packing up all his gear he'd need for a journey across Kanto. Basic survival gear included two sets of extra clothes, all rolled up in a skivvy roll, a fire-starting kit, a medium sized first aid kit, a compass, a large weather resistant multi-map of Kanto (roads, landmarks, topography, environmental), a role of paracord roping, duct tape, binoculars, two green tarps, bungie straps, zip-ties, thermal blankets, ponchos, two canteens, a basic cooking set, and water purifying gear. He had essential hygiene supplies such as toilet paper, brush, comb, toothpaste, dental floss, toothbrush, body wash, shampoo, deodorant, and of course a towel and washcloth. The tools and self-defense gear he packed were a Kanto military grade combat survival knife, a machete, a hatchet, a foldable shovel, two multi-tools, three pocketknives, two retractable batons, and a sharpening tool. His first aid kit had an assortment of various antiseptics, cotton balls, gauze pads, alcohol, medical tape, bandages, medical wraps, anti-venoms, sewing supplies, and medical wares. For shelter and rest, he had a three-person tent, two tarps, a sleeping bag His fire-starting kit included stormproof matches, two lighters, a fire-steel with striker, a pocketknife exclusively for cutting tinder, a blast-match, a Tohil lighter, some lighter fluid, a fire-starting lens, packaged tinder, and Vaseline-covered cotton balls. As for weatherproof electronics, he opted to bring along his weather resistant an instant camera known as the SMEARGLE-IC500 and many cartridges full of sheets. To go with it, he had a waterproof scrapbook. He had several hundred sheets to fill it up with. He would also bring note taking and sketching equipment such as various colored pens, pencils, journals, and a sketchbook. For food, he opted to bring various pans and containers, along with a few ingredients. He also had Professor Oak's recipe for Pokémon food, which would provide healthy sustenance. He even had fishing gear which consisted of a simple extendable Goldeen 1000 Fishing Rod (It was his dad's old fishing rod) spare fishing line, hooks, weights, lures, rigs, jigs, and various tools associated with it. A piece of amazing technology that Ash had access to were the PokéCaps. PokéCaps or Poké-Capsules were small capsule technology that could store anything to make it portable, such as equipment, clothes, or furniture. As long as one had the Capsule's metal Case, one could store them. All this technology had been obtained by him through a combination of work, gifts, and dedication to learning. His father gave him the PokéCaps as those were what he used in his travels. Professor Oak gave him the research equipment such as the journals. The SMEARGLE-IC500 was one of Ash's favorite things to use as a gift from his mother.
If you looked around Ash's bedroom, you'd see that it was full of various things balancing between a ten-year-old's room and a college dorm. It was full of reference books, notebooks, pictures of many different Pokémon, type charts, and cartography equipment. There were a few games systems lying around including an Atari and a Gameboy Nintendo 64. I would only bring along with me few of these books, most of them involving survival. Most of this equipment fit in a large black tactical backpack with multiple MOLLE attachments. The total weight of all this equipment was probably a good thirty pounds. It'd be more if the PokéCaps didn't exist.
He had multiple sets of clothing; outfits for different occasion or traveling location. His normal travelling clothes for warmer climates were brown hiking boots, blue jeans or cargo shorts, a T-shirt with colors ranging from white to black, a short-sleeved cobalt colored shirt made out of synthetic polyester, and a gray tactical vest made out of cut resistant material. His cap having a grey mesh on the back, being Maroon Red on the front and on the bill with a Poké Ball symbol on the front. He also had a couple pairs of grey cargo shorts. For colder climates, he had long-johns for both his legs and torso. His jacket was cobalt blue with silver cuffs and hood. He also had a red hoodie, winter work gloves, and a few neck gaiters (some cobalt or maroon with a Poké Ball design on both).
He was folding his clothes in a high tech suitcase with the words "PokéCap – Suitcase" written on it. It felt like the thirtieth time he had done so. While he did so, he watched a tournament match between a trainer name Eric Young and Bruno of the Elite Four. It was Eric Young's Gengar verses Bruno's Nidorino. Gengar dodged a horn attack from Nidorino before launching a hypnosis attack, which the Nidorino fell asleep. Bruno recalled Nidorino and called out Onix. Ash had seen this rerun a few times. This was before Bruno was part of the Elite Four and he was still discovering his team. In this tournament that happened many years ago probably before Ash was born, Bruno primarily had Rock and Ground types. But as a member of the Elite Four, he slowly transitioned into specializing in Fighting types.
Ash heard his door creak open. In the doorway was Delia Ketchum, wife of Rick "Red" Ketchum and his mother. She had Amber eyes, light brown long hair, and physique athletic women would have. Out of everything Ash inherited from his mom, it was her amber eyes and her caring nature. He seemed to get his intelligence from his father as well as drive to become a Pokémon Trainer. Her attire was basic, already in pajamas, as it was late at night. "Isn't it passed your bedtime honey?"
His mother never really scolded him for much as he have never gives her a reason to. She taught him how to do things himself, something Ash was keen on doing. Ash's laundry, sewing, gardening, cooking, cleaning the house; it was all part of growing up. How to manage his own finances, learning life hacks, all of that. Out of all of his teachers, his mother was his favorite. She was his whole world. "Sorry mom," the Ten year old replied sheepishly, "I guess the excitement is getting to me."
"If the last few days weren't enough to tell Ash," Delia replied, "I don't know what is. You repacked your belongings ten times and looked over the regional map every other thirty minutes."
Ash let out a sheepish laugh. "Sorry," He replied finishing up, "I just like being prepared."
"Tell me something I don't know," Delia said with a knowing a smile.
"Charmander's shiny form is golden and when it is in its final evolved form, it's scales are black instead of orange-red," Ash replied nonchalantly.
She almost went speechless thrown off by her son's teasing, "I didn't mean literally." She let out a motherly giggle.
"I know," Ash replied grinning.
"You sure you got everything packed?" His mom said.
"Yup." Ash replied
"Winter clothes?" His mother challenged.
"A jacket and a hoodie." Ash said.
"Canteen?"
"And purification tablets."
"Regional map?"
"All three."
"Tent?"
"And the two tarps."
"Underwear."
"Two pairs for every day just in case I crap myself."
"Ew. Sleeping bag, pillow, camera?" That's the price of being a boy mom.
"All of that."
"Compass, sketchbooks, and album?"
"Would you like for me to unpack it all?" Ash said making a face that made his mother snort.
"No I'm good," She said.
"Well," Ash said grinning, "If we're done playing twenty questions….I'm going to try and get some sleep. Big day tomorrow, if you didn't know."
"How could I not know?" She asked sarcastically, while grinning and turning off the light, "Good night." She closed the door.
"Uh…." Ash said mimicking his mother's sarcastic tone, "I'm not a Zubat! I can't see in the dark." He didn't get a response.
Ash had to admit, he was tossing and turning for the majority of the night. The excitement of finally going on a Pokémon Journey was too real.
In this world, Pokémon were dangerous. There was this common misconception that kids starting out on their journey as a Pokémon Trainer, everything will be dandy and full of wondrous adventures. While the latter may be true, it was pretty naïve to assume Pokémon training would be nothing but a breeze. Especially if you're on your own journey. Ash's father had told him that. Pokémon were sentient creatures, all of them having their own quirks, personalities, and pitfalls. The food chain still existed, and some Pokémon were more dangerous than others. Training a Pokémon should be used with caution, while encountering wild Pokémon one should be even more extremely cautious. Ash had heard stories of Trainers being killed by Pokémon and of Trainers killing said Pokémon. He had heard of gangs and organizations who use Pokémon, to further their goals in global domination or just doing everything for the lust of money. His father had a couple run-ins with the regional organization known as Team Rocket. He had once told me that they were run by a woman whose sinister schemes almost broke Kanto. Ever since she was executed by a special task force known as the G-men, Team Rocket had mostly disbanded, and former members began to operate independently.
But back to Pokémon and how dangerous they were. The mortality rate was 20% for Pokémon trainers who were just starting out. Instead of making a legal age, as it is universally a good choice to start out young, aspiring Pokémon trainers were requested to have a minimum of three years in a Pokémon Academy or training under a qualified Pokémon Trainer or Regional Professor. It didn't necessarily mean that one would learn battle strategies or different training skills. Most of the time, it was learning about the different Pokémon that were originally native to the region or how they were first discovered. Ash got the best of both worlds, as he was trained by Professor Oak, the Kanto regional professor, and his father who was considered a Master Pokémon Trainer.
But now, it was Ash's time. Whether he'd shine or not, that depended on what his goals were. So there's a question that every Pokémon Trainer gets asked. What are your dreams? What are your goals as a Pokémon Trainer. The common answer is: I want to become a Pokémon Master. That answer is very vague….very childish. There was no true Pokémon Master. What defines the Pokémon Master? Do you capture all registered Pokémon in the Regional Pokédex to the number? Do you complete the Pokédex on an international count? Do you win the many league tournaments in each region? Do you challenge the Elite 4 of each region and become the new Champion? Do you become so skilled in Pokémon Training, that your Pokémon are unbeatable? What is a Pokémon Master? Sure, there are Master ranked Pokémon Trainers, but did that make them a Pokémon Master? Ash didn't think it did. The Renown Pokémon Trainers who were Master ranked were usually Elite Four members or former members, were not considered Pokémon Masters. Not even the current Champion of Kanto and Johto regions, Blue, a man considered a Master specializing in various types of Pokémon. He wasn't a Pokémon Master. So what did being a Pokémon Master mean? It was a question that was never fully answered.
So that was Ash's goal. He didn't want to just be a Pokémon Master. He wanted to explore the meaning of it. So how was he going to do so? It was simple. If there was one thing a Pokémon Trainer's Journey was, it was never-ending, until the Trainer decided to call it quits. So, Ash's journey was going to go at his own pace. He'd combine various fields and search the meaning of becoming a Pokémon Master that way. Pokémon Training, Researching, and Breeding. Those were going to be his main fields. He'd challenge tournaments, the Battle Chateau, the Battle Maison's, maybe even the new Battle Frontier he had been hearing about, and any other battle facility he came across; or he'd try to. The Battle Frontier however was only just a rumor. It was supposed to be composed of strong Pokémon Trainers who were like Gym Leaders. He hadn't really paid attention to the Pokémon Contests, but he'd have to check on out. That was something that Amarillo was interested in. She and Leaf had talked about it every now and then. There were many other Pokémon Professions or pursuits out there. There were two professional trainer tournaments that Ash wanted to beat. The Pokémon World League and the Pokémon World Coronation Series. If Ash had to catch every Pokémon he could in the world, then he would. He knew that catching Legendary or Mythical Pokémon would most likely not happen. If getting out of this Region without me feeling that he had fully accomplished a sizeable portion of his journey in these endeavors, then so be it. All of this was what Ash wanted to do. He was going to be the most renown trainer/coordinator(maybe)/breeder/Researcher/champion in the world….it was all about ambition.
Slumber eventually took him. He didn't dream what normal trainers probably dreamed, which was either becoming the number one trainer in the world or winning a league. Some would have nightmares like getting to their regional professor and not getting the Pokémon they were hoping for or even getting one at all. Ash's dream was just sitting with a bunch of random Pokémon, a lot of them he couldn't identify, due to probably being from unfamiliar regions. It felt….good. like a peaceful dream. There were Pokémon of every evolution line. There was even legendary Pokémon such as Mew, and the three Legendary birds. Everything was serene until…..BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP, BEEP. The most obnoxious sound woke him up.
He yawned waking up and slamming his hand over the Pidgey-Pokeball alarm clock, shutting it. On the side it said 6:30 AM. He was normally an early bird, but staying up at a little over midnight kind of messed up his internal body clock. He had to be at Professor Oak's at 8:00 AM this morning. He could smell the
He was kind of thrown off because usually he tried to help her with meals if he didn't have a busy day. "Good morning momma," Ash said.
"Good morning dear," Delia replied taking some bacon off a cast iron frying pan with a fork, "I know you usually want to help with one of the meals, but today is a special day. I've cooked your favorites, bacon, eggs cooked over medium, home fries, and Kalos Toast. Speaking of Kalos…have you emailed Serena lately?"
"Thank you mom!" Ash said looking at food with vigor, "I have actually. I messaged her a couple days ago. She said they should be leaving for Viridian City. It'll take about three days until they're there. I'm going to meet them there. From there, I think Mrs. Yvonne is coming to Pallet to talk with a contractor about finally building their Kanto home. Serena wants to go with me on a Pokémon Journey. She got her Starter Pokémon from the regional Professor, Professor Sycamore. So it's going to be a great one!"
"So Serena is coming all this way to travel with you huh?" His mother asked with a teasing tone, "You two are going to do it alone?"
"Huh?" Ash asked slightly confused by her questions, "I'd imagine so unless you count our Pokémon…? Why? Do you know something I don't?"
"Not really," Delia lied shrugging it off with a giggle, "Eat up." Her thoughts said otherwise. "I swear, I love you to death son but sometimes you are so clueless. That girl has the biggest crush on you."
As Ash helped himself to his breakfast, his mother thought about the Yvonne's. She and Grace had become friends since that faithful encounter between Ash and his new friend Serena at the Pokémon summer camp hosted by Professor Oak. Grace was the mother of Serena and an expert Rhyhorn Racer. Between her Rhyhorn racing career and her inheritance from her late parents, the Yvonne's were well off in wealth. They didn't live in fancy mansions or anything like that. But they did have homes in a few regions. Kalos was where their hometown was. They also had one in the Hoenn, Sinnoh, Unova, Alola, Galar, and their newest home was in the Paldea Region. Because Johto and Kanto were so close together, Grace had decided not to build or purchase a home in the opposite region. She had just gotten permits to build a home in the Kanto region. She eventually moved onto real estate and bought many beach houses in the Orange Archipelago. She rented them out to vacationers. The Ketchum family and Yvonne family used to vacation out there all the time, at least two weeks in the summer. Occasionally, the Oak's, The two families had become fast friends. Serena's dad however, had passed away when she was still an infant. Grace and Delia at least talked to each other every day or every other day, just gossiping. Ash and Serena talked almost just as much. Delia and her husband Red could live comfortably. Red often won money on Pokémon battles and from being a part of the Pokémon League. Yes, they lived comfortably, but did not have nearly as much wealth as the Yvonne's.
She smiled as Ash scarfed down his food. He did love to eat after all. "Hey," She said, "When you get done with the Professor, come back home. I've got something for you. It won't be ready until then."
"Okay Ma," Ash said smiling with bacon clinging between his teeth.
"Ashton Ketchum!"
After the best breakfast his mom had ever made him, it was the usual hygiene routine of a shower, teeth brushing, and deodorizing for Ash. He had twenty-five minutes until he was supposed to be at Professor Oak's. He looked at himself in the mirror. All he could see was his mother's amber eyes, his father's hair that was full of Tauros-licks, and the angular face he had. His athleticism also showed as he was just a kid almost a preteen who had zero body fat. The faint scars on his cheekbones were from an incident where he wore a pair of goggles that were required when dealing with poison-type Pokémon. Instead of him being hit by venom or sludge, his goggles protected him from a Machoke literally backhanding them after being subjected to poison powder by a Venomoth. The worn-out sharper edges were the reason it cut into him. It was an experience Ash would never forget. Pokémon could be unintentionally dangerous. He sighed looking at himself deep in thought. With his morning routine complete, he got dressed and double checked all of his belongings that he was carrying with him before meeting his mom at the front door.
"Remember to come right back," his mother said.
"I will mom!" Ash replied with a smile.
"I'm so proud of you," She said wrapping him in a hug, "Stay safe, and don't forget everything you were taught."
"Always stay humble and kind," Mom replied, "or try to."
"I will," I replied.
"I love you Ash," She said.
"I love you too mom," I replied smiling.
With that, Ash picked up his backpack and strapped it on before leaving his home. He could see in the distance, Professor Oak's Laboratory situated at the top of a hill. On the other side of it would be a massive reserve for Pokémon owned by those who were sponsored by the regional professor. Ash would be one of those trainers, as well as Leaf, Gary, and Amarillo. The Laboratory itself was a large two story building with a windmill on it acting as the primary source of power. Below Pallet Town Laboratory was the town. The closer one got to the Lab, the more cluttered the town got with buildings. The outskirts of town, you'd find houses several acres apart. Outside the front door were three people Ash's age.
One of them was a boy with light brown spiky hair, and dark viridian eyes. He exuded a slightly confident and had an almost a pompous expression. He wore a violet long sleeved shirt with an orange trim, blue pants, and tan boots. He also wore a necklace with a yellow and green yin-yang style design on it. His backpack was dark blue and much smaller than my own. This was Gary Oak. My number one rival and one of my childhood friends.
Another person was a pretty girl with shoulder length blonde hair, blue eyes. She had more of an innocent expression. She wore a cowgirl hat, a yellow and white cowgirl shirt, blue jean pants, brown boots, and brown work gloves. She had a brown trainer's belt on like a cowgirl would have her belt on if she was drawing a gun, which doubled as her storage for her belongings with a small backpack Her name was Amarillo; a girl Ash used to work with on her mother's farm every now and then.
The last person was yet another pretty girl with long brown hair and brown eyes. Her expression was calmer and brighter than the other two. Her outfit was having a forest green tank top on, dark blue short shorts, brown hybrid hiking shoes/boots, a forest green snap-back League ball cap and black socks. Her style of storage was a single strap MOLLE covered army green backpack. Her name was Leaf Meadows; a close friend of Ash's who he could talk with on an intellectual level about Pokémon most of the time.
These three were his close friends and rivals. They were all like adopted siblings. They were supposed to arrive five minutes from now, it being 7:55. Ash figured he'd be the first here, but he guessed he was wrong. Of course, Gary would be the first to comment.
"Ashy-boy you're the last one here," Gary said pompously, "I guess this is going to be how it always is. Might as well be a loser from the beginning."
"Just because you get somewhere first doesn't mean you're going to be better than me," Ash retorted, "I haven't even been here for ten seconds. Don't start on me now…."
"What's the matter Ashy-boy?" Gary asked throwing more bait around with an expression, "Can't take the criticism?"
"Oh shut up," Leaf spoke clearly aggravated, "Seriously don't you have anything better to do than be a jerk today?"
"I'm not a jerk," Gary replied defending himself, "I'm just getting him all fired up for his journey. And no I don't. I'm just standing here. We're ALL just standing here! What on Earth is Gramps doing!?"
"Be patient," Amarillo spoke, "I'm sure he's getting everything ready."
As if on cue, the door of the Laboratory opened revealing an older man with brown hair that was greying and black eyes. He wore brown khakis, shoes, a violet polo shirt and a white lab coat. "Good morning children."
"Good morning Professor Oak," The two girls and Ash spoke in unison.
"Sup Gramps," Gary said with a cool demeanor going on. Gary always called his grandfather "gramps."
"I'm sure you're all very excited," Professor Oak replied, "So we may as well get started."
"But Professor Oak," Amarillo said, "There are four of us. And there are only three Pokémon to start with. One of us will be left out."
"I say it be Ash!" Gary immediately proclaimed, "He was last to get here after all." Ash was about to say something but Professor Oak stopped an argument immediately.
"Do not worry," Professor Oak replied, "I can compensate the one who doesn't get one of the regional Starter Pokémon. Now let's go inside." The interior of Professor Oak's Laboratory was simple. To the right was the waiting room, library, and storage room, while the actual two-story laboratory was located just beyond the first door. All the equipment was pushed to the side of the room, with a single station being the center of the lab. There were three Poke balls, each with a card of the said Pokémon inside, in front of them. "In order to determine who goes in what order I'm going to have you all draw straws. They're numbered." The four children all took the straws. First Leaf would go, then Amarillo, then Gary, then finally Ash.
"What's the last Pokémon Gramps?" Gary asked, "You only have the three starters' here."
"That's true," Professor Oak said, "The last Pokémon is a Pikachu that is the daughter of one of the Colors of Pallet Town. Pikachu has got a sweet disposition."
"A puny little Pikachu?" Gary said laughing, "Oh man. Looks like you're out of luck Ashy-boy. Nobody's going to want that little squeaker."
"If that's the Pokémon I get," Ash replied not stooping to his level, "Then so be it." In the past, Gary would have gotten to him, but today was a special day….if he received a Pikachu as his starter…then so be it."
"Can we go already?" Leaf said impatiently, but excited.
"Yes," Professor Oak said, "Go ahead and pick Leaf."
Leaf walked over to Bulbasaur's Poké ball. "I choose Bulbasaur." That was her mother's starter Pokémon.
"Oh, the Irony," Gary commented as he grinned.
"Shut up," Leaf quipped with a smirk. Despite their temper towards one another, they were still friends. When they both got angry, they had one heck of a shouting match.
"My turn!" Amarillo said with a joyous smile, "I choose…..Pikachu!"
"What!?" Gary said shocked, "Why would you pick a Pikachu of all things?"
"It's cute," Amarillo said then stuck her tongue out at him, "Cuter than anything else here, you big bully. Plus, it's kind of poetic isn't it? It is the daughter of my mother's Pikachu!"
"Oh Arceus," Gary said slapping his forehead, "She's only going after girly Pokémon."
"What's that supposed to mean!?" Leaf and Amarillo said comically offended.
"Hey," Ash commented sweatdropping and positioning himself behind the two annoyed females, "I'm just gonna stand behind y'all and out of the line of fire. Okay? Okay."
"Look no offense," Gary said sweatdropping, "But a good Pokémon Trainer doesn't just go for any Pokémon just because it's cute."
"Who're you to decide what kind of Pokémon I can go after?" Amarillo growled.
"Just sayin'," Gary said digging that hole deeper. He walked over and picked up Squirtle's Poké Ball. "See what I got here? This is going to be the best Pokémon out of all of yours, especially Ash!"
"Oh, be quiet," Leaf said calling his bluff, "Your Squirtle's weak against mine and Amarillo's Pokémon. You don't stand a chance. And you got a Squirtle just like your dad!"
"If it isn't the pot calling the kettle black," Ash said shaking his head and walking over to pick up the last Poke ball, "well I guess that leaves me with the Starter I wanted anyways. I guess we're all just like our parents huh?"
"I'd say so," Professor Oak said with his chin resting in the palm of his hand like he was contemplating something. "I suspected that you all would follow in your parents footsteps but it wasn't one hundred percent guaranteed. But do not worry. Each of your Pokémon have better stats compared to the other starters. Amarillo, your Pikachu has inherited her mother's superior speed to any of the Starters with lower stats other than Attack and special attack. Your Pikachu may shine in those fields but its defense and special defense takes a serious blow compared to the others. Leaf, your Bulbasaur has more special attack and special defense. Gary, your Squirtle has higher defense and special defense power. Ash, your Charmander has higher attack and speed."
"Still!" Gary challenged, "Your little lizard's not going to beat my Squirtle. Your Pokémon may be able to hit harder than mine, but with Squirtle's type advantage and defensive power, we'd win hands down!"
"I'm pretty sure I heard your father say something similar to Red, Gary," Professor Oak commented, "There were several matches that ended in draws, in their rivalry."
"But it's going to be different with us!" Gary said grinning good naturedly.
"Do you have a mute button?" Ash deadpanned.
"You can't mute awesomeness," Gary retorted. Ash had to laugh at that. He sure had a comeback for everything.
"I'll die trying," Ash quipped.
"Moving on," Professor Oak said ignoring the boys' antics, "You've all got your first Pokémon now. Now to get you all to sign these." They were high tech notepads. As the aspiring trainers signed them, Professor Oak explained more. "Your trainer's licenses should be inserted into your Pokédex as soon as they're done being made. Your Pokédex is your primary identification with that card inside. Don't lose it." He handed them all a Pokédex each. Ash looked at his briefly, before pocketing it. Listening to the professor was priority at the moment. "The functions of the Pokédex are as listed. It has an entry for each Pokémon that are native to the Kanto region as well as many from nearby regions such as Johto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh. You really won't find any Pokémon from the Unova, Kalos, Alola, Galar, Paldea, or any other regions. If you do, it's extremely rare or that species was imported for domestic uses. It contains detailed data for each Pokémon species. When you scan a Pokémon, it will give you a quick summary to begin with for what it's best known for. Anything more detailed, you'll have to access the entry. Any Pokémon you catch, you can scan them to determine their general health, their status conditions, their general statistics involving their attack power, endurance, speed, and agility. It will display what abilities they have, and their known moves. The Pokédex will also record a tamed Pokémon's characteristics and its nature. The biology of the Pokémon, their behavior, their diets, their weight, height, and prints. Anything on a Pokémon that has been discovered, is in your Pokédex. Finally, the Pokédex is wirelessly hooked into the Pokémon League International Database."
"What's that database for Professor?" Amarillo asked curiously.
Before Professor Oak could answer, Gary did. "It basically means you have no privacy," Gary replied, "It shows your accomplishments such as badges, tournament participations, and things like what Pokémon a Trainer has. Usually, it's all recorded when you enter a tournament."
"What's the point though?" Amarillo asked.
"It's for high-ranking Circuit officials and the public to keep track of Pokémon users in the said circuits," Gary replied, "The League, Contests, Showcases, Battle Frontier, Battle Chateau, Battle Maison's, ranked tournaments, that kind of thing. More or less, it's kind of like a statistical record that the public has access to."
"Ohh," Amarillo spoke, "That's cool I guess."
"If you say so," Ash spoke up, "Seems like a waste of time to have."
"Well, when you get good," Gary defended the statistics, "You'll probably have a good rep with the public as a trainer. I can't wait until my rep is up there."
"To match that enormous ego?" Ash thought inwardly.
"Okay you four," Professor Oak interjected, "Let's finish up here. You all must get going sooner or later."
"Right," Gary spoke, "What's left Gramps?"
"I'm supplying you all with twenty Poke ball's each," Professor Oak replied, "But afterwards, you are going to have to buy your own. These Poke balls are already registered in your names." He handed them twenty Poké Balls each, in which Ash put his in a pouch on his backpack.
Nothing in this world was free. That's the basics of life. Pokémon Training was a career. And in order to be successful in that career, a trainer was going to have to make money. Many years ago, even before Ash's father began his own journey, a trainer made money by winning Pokémon battles. It's a law. The amount of money that is put into the winnings depended on the median experience of both Trainers, the number of Pokémon used in each battle, and the wager amount after this is all predetermined. All Currency was dealt with electronically and monitored by the Pokémon Association Database. If you had a Pokédex with a Trainer's license inserted, you could access it via Pokédex. The reason for the need for currency was that Trainer's needed to pay for the Pokémon Centers, which were hospitals for Pokémon, and to help keep supplies for any travelling trainer. That didn't include taxes, or entry fees to lesser tournaments. In order to make money and win battles, one had to be good at their job. If Ash hadn't been saving up since he was five years old, and his father didn't give him a little boost, he wouldn't had been as prepared to venture out. Every one of the kids were set up to succeed in that regard. At least to begin with.
"Oh Ash!" Professor Oak said, "I forgot to ask….are you still meeting with Serena in Viridian City?"
"Yes I am Professor," Ash replied, "She and her mother will arrive there in three days."
"I see," Professor Oak said, "Well then, do you mind giving these to her when you meet up with her?" He handed Ash a parcel. "Its her Pokédex and Poké Balls. She received her starter and trainer ID card from Professor Sycamore correct?"
"Yes sir," Ash replied, "She's got something called a Fennekin….I think. It was the fire starter."
"Ah," Professor said, "Yes, Fennekin. Such a hardy breed found in Kalos. Nothing like that is found here. Luckily, I already downloaded the information for all the Kalos Starters in the Pokédex's beforehand. Very well, I guess it's time you four. Good luck out there! And stay safe."
"We will," Leaf said nodding.
"Smell ya later," Gary said with a grin, "I've got to catch my ride. Try to keep up losers." With that, he left.
"Ride?" Leaf and Amarillo questioned at the same time. All three of the remaining children walked out of the lab to see Gary getting in a car…..with cheerleaders. Ash could literally see Leaf and Amarillo sweatdropping. When Gary's chauffeur drove the convertible off with them all aboard, the girls spoke through the cloud of dust.
"Did that really just happen?" Amarillo asked as the dust began to settle.
"Just go with it," Leaf replied. The time to leave had finally come. There was a pregnant pause as the two of them seemed to realize this.
"Well?" Amarillo said, "I guess this is it."
"Yep," Leaf agreed, "So how're we going to do this? With Gary already out of town with a car, he'll definitely get to places before us."
"I'm going to hang back for a few," Ash spoke up, "You two go on ahead. I've got something to get from my home."
"You don't want to travel with us?" Amarillo asked with a pouting face.
"I do," Ash replied nodding, "But I also want to go at my own pace. Plus, all three of you are my rivals so traveling together is a bit cliché. Besides, we've all got each other's email. Even though I want to spam Gary's with photo bombs."
"Good point," Leaf spoke smiling and giving him a hug, "Well then. Good luck. I want to see all the photos you and Serena take."
"Me too!" Amarillo piped up giving Ash a hug as well, "Both of Y'all probably got a scrapbook ready don't ya?"
"Probably," Ash replied laughing a little, "Goodbye you two." Ash and the two girls parted ways. Ash returned home to the small tranquil home. "Mom?" Ash called as he walked in.
There was a flash that came from the kitchen. A silhouette of an upright Pokémon briefly appeared on the wall along with the flash of light. It had a long tail. But like the flash, it was gone. Ash's mother came out of the kitchen with three things in her hands. One was a Poké Ball, while the other was a letter and small cardboard box. "Ash dear," His mother spoke to him, "Your father sent these to you a few days ago. One of his Pokémon just used its psychic powers to teleport here to make sure we received it in the mail. He wanted to be here, but he is doing something very important with his Pokémon."
"Dad's busy," Ash replied with his hands behind his head understandingly, "I can't expect him to be around all the time." He couldn't say he wasn't just a little disappointed though. "What Pokémon came here? Alakazam or something?"
"I don't know," Delia replied slightly confused, "I've never seen a Pokémon like it. It must be from another region or something But here you go."
Dear Ash,
To begin with, I want to apologize for not visiting. I am truly sorry for not being there to get your first Pokémon. I am at a crucial stage in training with one of my Pokémon and it requires a lot of attention and focus as its evolution needs to be at a certain time of day. I am still in the Johto region for now, training in the mountains. I'm curious to find out which was your first choice. Send me an email sometime. I check it at least twice a week. I'd love to hear how your journey is going. I am proud of you and all you have accomplished. I know that you will go far as a Pokémon Trainer.
To make up for the last birthday I have missed, I'm giving you a Pokémon that was bred from one of my own. It is still a baby, barely three months old, so treat it with care. I have already registered it in your name with Professor Oak. He doesn't like being inside of a Poké Ball so you might have to figure out a way to deal with that. I'm surprised I could get him to go inside it for safe transport. I hope you like the Watch! I found it at Mount Silver. I love you and your mother, and I miss you both dearly. Don't forget that. I'll be in touch.
Ash smiled, taking in the contents of that letter. He understood completely why his father couldn't be there. Pokémon Training was a life on its own, plus it paid the bills. His father wasn't a deadbeat dad. His mother never referred to him as that. She referred him as a wild spirit, someone who had passion for his career. His dad made it a point to visit for a month after two and a half to three months of travelling. It was custom for people who worked with Pokémon as Pokémon Trainers to be away from home for a long time and do travelling. Ash honestly didn't know how his mother dealt with it. He remembered asking her once, and she told me him three words, "Love and faith."
He never asked what she meant by that. He didn't need to. Faith was what many people relied on in life and eventually love was something that everyone needed. He wasn't looking for anything romantically. He was only ten. He was way too young to be thinking or feeling anything like that. He stared at the Poké Ball in his hand, wondering what kind of Pokémon it could be.
His mother seemed to read his mind. "I think you'll love it sweetie," She said, "Why don't you go outside and see what he gave you? But first….try on the watch." She opened it for him as he attached his new Poké Ball on his belt. She gingerly placed it in his hands. The watch was digital, showing the time. It also had an alarm on it. He looked at the product book and noticed that it was impact resistant and once worn, stretch resistant thanks to the kind of band it had on it. Ash put it on his right wrist immediately. It was 9:02 AM.
"Okay," Ash replied nodding and walking outside to the road. The road was barely used by anyone other than the Ketchum's. The only other people who'd be using it in the future would be the Yvonne's as Grace had just bought the three-and-a-half-acre plot of land right across the road from the Ketchum residence. Delia leaned sideways against a wooden beam supporting the porch's overhang watching her son with a fond expression.
"Charmander," He said, "Come on out!" With a loud sound of energy and a flash of light, a Pokémon formed as the Poké Ball flew back to its owner's hand. The Pokémon in question was orange-red, standing up bipedal, with a long tail and a flame on the end of it. Its underbody was a dull cream color. It had green eyes, a snout and a round head. "Hello Charmander."
"Char, Charmander," It growled. It looked at him watching him closely.
Ash bent down and held his hand out. The little fire lizard sniffed his hand, then nuzzled his head into his hand. Ash stood up momentarily confusing his Starter Pokémon.
"I have another Pokémon to call out," Ash said pulling out the unknown Pokémon. "Come on out!" He threw the Poké Ball and a similar flash of energy exploded out.
It formed into a tiny yellow mouse with a small black tail. It had small beady eyes and two pinkish orange pouches on its cheeks. Its last defining feature was its big spade shaped ears with black markings along its edges. Ash immediately knew what kind of Pokémon it was. He had seen his father's Pikachu many times and was often part of his main team. Leave it to his father to breed one of the most powerful Pikachu in existence and give its offspring to his son.
"Pi-pi-pichu?" It uttered looking around in confusion. It then looked at me. "Pichu?" It was a cute little Pokémon.
There was a growl that came from the Charmander. It seemed visibly curious. "Hello, you two," Ash spoke getting down on one knee, "From this day forward, I am your Trainer. My name is Ash Ketchum. You two are my first of hopefully many Pokémon. Together, we're going to train and take on the Pokémon League. We will make lots of friends along the way, but I'm going to need your help. Will you two help me?"
The two Pokémon seemed a bit curious. Pichu was still a baby Pokémon. Its mind probably wasn't as developed as Charmander was. It wasn't battle ready yet. I wouldn't put it through as much as I would Charmander. Pichu would probably be easy prey for Pidgeotto or a flock of Spearow. Charmander stood a fighting chance. If trained right, it could very well be a very capable fighter. They nodded, but soon after Pichu's attention was taken by something in the distance; a flock of Pidgey as they passed. "Pichu." He commanded. The Pichu immediately looked at his trainer with a tilted head. "You've got to pay attention."
"Pi-pichu?" Pichu seemed to ask.
"Not paying attention will cause you to lose a battle," Ash spoke, "Or worse. Killed." The Pichu flinched.
"Pichu…" The Pokémon said reprimanded.
There was a determination in Charmander's eyes that Ash liked. It wasn't going to let him down. "Okay then," Ash spoke. "Time to check both of your capabilities."
He pulled out his Pokédex and scanned the two Pokémon. It gave the brief summary of the Pokémon's overall information. He also accessed their physical information.
"Charmander, the lizard Pokémon. When the flame on the tip of its tail burns brightly, it indicates that it is in good health. If the flame on its tail goes out, it will die."

The moves of the said Pokémon were expected. They were untrained, undeveloped, and had zero battle experience. There are many ways to classify Pokémon and monitor their individual traits and "statistics". It's all part of an algorithm, first adopted by Pokémon doctors, then molded into something more by Pokémon Researchers, Breeders, and Trainers. There are countless Pokémon, new species being discovered every now and then, or introduced from far away regions by trainers or Pokémon Rangers for education purposes. The algorithm is named accordingly, The Pokémon Algorithm. The Algorithm itself is the combined statistics of a Pokémon's power of attack, special attack, defense, special defense, speed, accuracy, and evasiveness. Everything is based on numbers. It had been scientifically proven that the characteristics of Pokémon could be measured by their strengths and weaknesses. A wild Pokémon generally has lower statistics than that of a trained or healthier Pokémon. These "stats" usually increase up by a fraction or two when in training and/or using vitamins. Vitamins played a crucial role in Pokémon training if you had the funds to do so. The Statistics were something that many people who train or do not train Pokémon are ignorant of. It's like watching a sport such as Baseball, or International Football. Each player and Team have their own statistics in almost every action they do. It was the same concept with the Pokémon Algorithm, but only physical capabilities as a unit of measurement. Pokémon Leveling, was an entirely different thing. Levels are named so for lack of a better term to classify Pokémon in their experience and age. It is generally the point in time where a Pokémon learns certain moves. An example is when a Pidgey learns Gust naturally at level 9 but will reach its next stage in evolution naturally at level 18. Also naturally, its base statistics grow with each level at a fraction, but significantly increase when evolution is involved.
There were also differences between attack/special attack and defense/special defense, that many people were ignorant of, just like they were of ignorant of moves that involve the said characteristic. Science and research can explain a lot or break down certain elements of a subject. The Pokémon Algorithm is the scientific answer to anything that questions the individual capabilities of a Pokémon. It used to be that you had to go and put a Pokémon through a physical examination, which the process is still done with wild Pokémon. Pokémon that are caught can be monitored by a Poké Ball and the data is automatically transferred to a Pokédex.
All these calculations and numbers mean one thing. Pretty much, anything was explainable by science. But there were those who began to only see calculations and numbers instead of living beings with emotions and felt pain. There are many kinds of trainers out there, just like there were many kinds of people. There were the good and bad. There was the intelligent, then there was the incompetent. There was the power hungry, then there were the compassionate. Ash liked to think he was somewhere in between of the power hungry and the compassionate and definitely on the intelligent side of the scale.
Ash shook his head, focusing on the here and now. He often thinks to himself like that, breaking down any situation in a matter of seconds. In real time he probably stood there for less than a minute. But going through all those facts, he could spend hours doing it without realizing that time had moved around him. His brain just had a faster processing speed than other people as well as being able to remember information a lot easier. In fact, he could probably keep up with the information that a Pokédex can spit out about Charmander and Pichu in a fast pace if he studied it enough.
"When we get out on Route one," Ash spoke, "We're going to train for a while, maybe catch a Pokémon or two. Understood?" The two nodded. He broke out a smile. "Well come on then. Return." Charmander immediately went in the Poké Ball while Pichu dodged the red beam. Ash frowned. He remembered his father's letter saying that Pichu didn't like being in a Poké Ball.
"Pichu?" Ash asked, "What's wrong?"
"Pichu!" Pichu yelled pointing at the Poké Ball and shaking his head. Not that he doubted his father, but now it was confirmed.
"You don't want to go into the Poké Ball?" Ash asked.
"Pi-pi!" The Pichu said shaking his head.
"Are you scared of it?"
The Pichu nodded.
"Fine," Ash said and putting the Poké ball away, "I won't make you go inside unless it's an emergency or I'm transferring you over to Professor Oak. Then I'll make him let you out. Okay?" He wasn't going to make his Pichu do anything it didn't want to, but there had to be some limitations. Obviously, the Pichu hated confined spaces or just didn't like being in the Poké Ball.
Pichu looked up at his trainer blinking before nodding. "Pichu."
"Okay then," Ash said, "Come on." Ash held out his hand, back of it against the ground while crouching. Pichu blinked and smiled before running up his arm and onto his shoulder. "Now you're going to have to hold on tight, especially if I have to run or climb."
"Pichu!" Pichu exclaimed.
"Look at that," His mother said, "Making friends with your Pokémon already." Ash almost forgot she was there."
"Yeah," Ash said smiling and turning to his mom. "I guess it's time to set off mom." She opened her arms. "Huh?"
"What," Delia said, "No hug?"
"Oh," Ash said laughing, "My bad." He and his mother hugged it out. "I love you mom!"
"I love you too Ash," She replied still holding him there. "Be sure to upload some of those pictures you and Serena take and don't forget to give me a call when you get a chance."
"I will mom!" Ash said as she let go, "I promise!"
"Take care of him Pichu," Delia said.
"Pichu!" the tiny mouse Pokémon replied with a wave.
"Bye mom!" Ash said as he started to walk down the road.
"Bye honey!" His mother replied, "Be safe and have fun!" She watched her son walked down the road until he left her view by turning at an intersection going North. "He'll be alright….."
An hour later, Ash had made it to the town city limits on a hill overlooking Pallet Town on Route 1. He quickly checked to see that it was 9:50 AM. He turned around looking at the town in the distance. Pichu was perched on his shoulder. He took out his camera from a side pouch and aimed it in Pallet Town's direction before snapping a photo. The photo came out instantly from the front. He waited for the image to become clear before looking at it. It was the perfect picture he wanted. He pulled out a pen and wrote under it. "Starting out on my Pokémon Journey. I had to look at Pallet Town and enjoy it one last time for a while."
"Pi-Pichu?" He heard the little mouse Pokémon squeak.
"This is a photograph," Ash said, "It's for a memory. Serena was the one who came up with the idea. She likes stuff like that. She's the photographer. But then I started doing it and now it's kind of like a mutual thing."
"Pi?"
"Oh!" Ash said lightly facepalming himself, "Right! You haven't met her yet. She's a close friend. We both decided to travel together." Ash put the photo in a photo case that was in the same pouch. He'd transfer the photo to the album later. He sighed feeling the light breeze from the warm climate. He turned to look down….or up Route one. He was down south and was traveling north, so it was considered traveling up.
He could see the route immediately. Its surroundings were mostly grassland, with forest to the East and West the further one went North. There was a river as well, full of Magikarp. Ash remembered fishing for Magikarp back when his father would visit and watching the Poliwag jump out the water then back in. Pidgey, Spearow, Mankey, Diglett, Sandshrew, and Rattata were also natives of this Route. Pidgey, Spearow, and Rattata were more common than the others.
There were several paths along Route 1, all veering off to secluded areas, off the beaten paths to Viridian, or even human dwellings. There weren't many homes along the road. A main dirt road connected Viridian City to Pallet Town. Most people chose to take the central dirt road as it was the most direct road. Ash didn't mind following the trails or other paths because he wanted to explore, even though he had explored the area surrounding Route 1 before. He was familiar with the names of the trees, rocks, and brush all around him. Now, he couldn't remember their scientific names right offhand, but he had recorded it in his own personal Botanist Guide. He loved mapping out new areas and marking them on paper. It would defeat the purpose of his many different maps, but it was still interesting. To get a full experience, he'd take a photo of it and record it in his album and/or journal. If he saw something he thought was cool or out of the ordinary such as a Pokémon or the amazing scenery, he'd snap a photo of it.
…..
-10:30 AM-
….
He glanced at his watch seeing the time. He had been slowly making his way North, though more in the Northeast. He was looking for a clearing that was off the beaten path, that had hardly any grass and more dirt. It wouldn't do well for his Charmander to burn down an entire forest on accident while trying to learn his fire type moves. He eventually found the river with a large sand bank. The place was perfect to begin training for the day. He threw out his Charmander's Poké Ball out revealing the lizard Pokémon. Charmander swished his tail, the flames making a small billowing sound in the wind. Pichu jumped down and joined Charmander. Charmander was slightly confused as to why his teammate was still out his Poké Ball. Ash knew he had to study their behavioral patterns so he could get a grasp on their personalities.
"Are you two ready to begin?" Ash asked. In response Ash got a tilted head(Pichu) and a snort(Charmander). He wondered if these two knew commands. Pokémon were sentient, Ash was aware of that. But training Pokémon to obey commands was difficult for humans to master due to a multitude of reasons. Pokémon were independent with their own personalities, quirks, and abilities. The language barrier was also a problem. Humans couldn't understand Pokémon. However, it is a proven fact that Pokémon can understand each other. Human languages were a bit trickier for them to learn. They may not know what words mean, but they can learn. Sometimes, they could understand what a human is trying to get across, but not understand the words themselves. Teaching them to obey was crucial in Pokémon Training and battling. As if commands weren't enough and teaching a Pokémon to obey their trainers, there were a few more factors one must consider.
For starters, moves were classified in various categories. The naming of moves were universally given and recognized by multiple regions. Each move was classified by an Archetype of a move which was the basic Pokémon type such as Grass, Water, or Fire. Afterwards, there were three more types which were status moves, physical moves, and special moves. Status moves were moves that could change a Pokémon's status condition. Status Condition was if a Pokémon was Paralyzed, Frozen, Poisoned, Burned, Confused, bound, or asleep. Moves like this were usually something like Thunder wave or Confuse Ray. Elemental attacks could cause a status condition, such an Electric Type move causing paralysis or fire type moves causing victims to be burned. The next type of attacks were Physical moves, which were moves that usually dealt physical damage and made contact such as Bite, Bind, or Fire Fang. Special attacks were those that didn't involve physical contact such as Flamethrower, Hydropump, or Hyper Beam. Like Pokémon themselves, this system categorized each move to help people understand them. Each move was dangerous. During Pokémon battles, moves weren't as dangerous as they were in the wild, especially if Pokémon were trained to control their powers. Ash had made such observations. The reason being was that wild Pokémon often try to be as lethal as possible or try to deter danger. Ash had seen a Pidgeotto and Weedle go at it. The result was what was expected. The Pidgeotto ate the Weedle. But because the Weedle had gotten a poison sting off, the Pidgeotto died. Ash wanted to help the Weedle but was stopped by his father as he had wanted Ash to learn about Pokémon from observations only. He remembered it like it was yesterday:
"You can't always interfere with nature son," He had said, "It's part of the facts of life. Nature is brutal often times. There's a food chain and you must respect it. That Pidgeotto needed to eat. If it wasn't this Weedle, it would have been some other Bug Pokémon or insect. Unfortunately, the Pidgeotto wasn't prepared enough to avoid its stinger, which resulted in the bird's death."
Ash never forgot that lesson. He shook off those thoughts and focused on the here and now. He decided to start simple. Basic commands were key. He needed to make sure they could do so, or he could at least teach them the commands and to obey them. He quickly came up with a few commands to practice. Getting a handle on Pokémon's natural temperament through basic commands was how he was going to gain their trust. Of course, he wouldn't enslave his Pokémon and bend their will to his. That wasn't the sign of a good trainer. That was the sign of one who only wished for Pokémon to be in servitude or war. He mentally decided to separate his commands into four different categories. Passive, Evasive, Offensive, and Defensive. He'd start with Passive commands first, which were commands such as stay, come, follow, retrieve (something like fetch), lay, sit, or go to. These would be the foundations of Ash's Pokémon training. He could see where most people would see Ash as just training Pokémon to be pets and not battling, like a Growlithe was so often used as. He planned to do more with his Pokémon than just train them to battle. He was going to try to bring out the best in them.
He began training them immediately. He backed away slowly. "Stay." The two Pokémon began to move with me. "No." Ash ordered stopping. Charmander bobbed his head back like a reptile would but didn't move. Pichu simply blinked and moved towards me still. "Pichu!" Ash affirmed. Pichu stopped. "Okay. Now." Ash started to back up again. "Stay." The two Pokémon did not take their eyes off him, but they obeyed. "Good." He got a few meters away before he turned around to seemingly not to pay attention to them, although he was. He was trying to see if they were still obeying his commands. He was listening for any kind of sound that they may produce either from movement or vocalizations. He heard nothing. He turned back around to see them still staring at him with apt attention. "Good. Come." At first they didn't move. "Come," He repeated while pointing my finger at his feet. They seemed to get that one and bounded over to their trainer. For nearly thirty minutes, he repeated their training in the same order. Once he was sure they had those commands down, he decided to work on their dodging ability.
He started collecting nearby small rocks that were the size of his thumb. He was going to use those to train the two Pokémon to dodge. He wouldn't intentionally throw it to kill or hurt them. But he did want to toss it their way to learn to avoid the rocks. First he wanted to see if they could respond to the word "dodge." Then he'd proceed with directional input.
The two Pokémon blinked, curious as to what the small rocks were for. "I'm going to throw these rocks at you," Ash said, "And you are to try and dodge them when I say dodge."
Charmander seemed to get it. "Dodge," Ash said throwing one at Charmander. Charmander jumped to the side. "Dodge." Ash repeated this time throwing it at Pichu. Pichu ducked down. "Dodge." He threw one at Charmander who jumped over the rock. "Dodge." He threw one at Pichu who hopped out the way. "Dodge." He threw one at Pichu again who almost hesitated but jumped just in the nick of time. "Dodge." He threw the next one at Charmander who jumped to the side again. "Dodge." He threw the next one at Pichu who jumped over the rock. The little mouse was smiling. He thought it was a game. "Dodge." He threw two at Charmander one after the other. Charmander jumped over then ducked under the second. "Dodge." He did the same to Pichu who zigzagged to avoid the rocks. Ash then threw two at the same time at both of them. Pichu hesitated but avoided the rock at the last second. Charmander was hit in the chest.
"Char!" He chirped rubbing his chest.
"Did it hurt?" Ash asked. Charmander shook his head in response. These two Pokémon probably understood more than normal wild Pokémon due to being raised by humans. "Good." Ash said, "Sorry for the surprise attack you two. I wanted to see if you could respond without guidance. Don't always wait on a command to dodge. If you can do it while not using a move, then do so. Pichu is naturally skittish, so he avoided the rock anyways. Understand?" Charmander looked at Pichu, then back at his trainer.
"Charmander!" He growled nodding.
"Okay then," Ash said gathering another set of small rocks, "Let's keep going."
….
-11:58 AM-
He checked the time again. They had been practicing dodging for the next hour or so before taking a lunch break. Ash took out everything to cook the Pokémon Food. He was okay with just eating a Granola bar or two. But his Pokémon needed to eat. He went around and collected some wood for the campfire before setting it up to be lit. He looked over at Charmander, who eyed the campfire curiously.
"Can you produce an ember?" Ash asked him as he brought out lighter.
Charmander blinked before trying to swish his tail. He did it a couple times out of frustration, his tail flame making a "Fffff" sound every time it whipped. "It's okay buddy." Ash said, "After lunch, we'll train to see if we can get you to learn it." He knew Charmander could probably light the fire with its tail, but he wanted the Pokémon to have something to look forward to.
"Charmander!" The little fire lizard spoke perking up.
He proceeded to light the fire with some kindling. With that done, he got out his Pokémon Food Cooking set by activating the PokéCaps. A foldable table, cooking rack, a plastic container full of ingredients, and a cast iron pan was set out. Ash opened the tubberware box of brown pouches. Each pouch was generic Pokémon Kibble mix. It was full of nutrients for Pokémon to grow. He gathered some water from the river with a pot and put it over the fire to boil. He wanted to make sure the water was safe for drinking and cooking. It was a big pot too. He grabbed the cast iron pan and put some water in it after about three minutes of boiling. Usually, one minute of boiling was safe enough but he did three minutes to make sure. After that, he mixed two cups of the water with two pouches. He talked with his Pokémon as the food simmered in the pan. "Look," Ash said, "I'm no gourmet chef for Pokémon food. But it should be edible." The two Pokémon seemed to stare at him like robots as if waiting for a command or something. "You two can relax you know….it's not training time."
The two Pokémon blinked before conversing with each other. Ash sighed. After about an hour the food was ready and cooled off. Ash pulled out a specialized kibble cutter. It always reminded him of a vegetable cutter. At the moment, the food looked like one had baked a brownie in the pan. He used a knife to cut it into blocked pieces of the food and put them in the slot of the cutter. He pulled the handle down, compressing and cutting the pokémon food into a soft kibble. He pulled out two of his six Pokémon food bowls and poured equal amounts in each one while keeping some out.
"Well dig in," Ash said putting it in front of the two. The two Pokémon tried the food. Ash sat there in anticipation. He didn't have the recipe that Professor Oak used. He hoped that the two would like it. The two Pokémon looked at Ash after chewing on their food. Charmander shrugged and Pichu was just ate another bite. "Good? Bad?"
Charmander tilted his side to side as if saying, "Could be better. But edible."
Ash sweatdropped. "Yeah didn't think it would be the greatest," He said with an amused smirk, "Add another thing on the list to learn. Pokémon culinary skills. Sorry you two."
"Charmander."
"Pichu."
With the two in the process of eating, Ash decided to eat a few granola bars for lunch. He snapped a photo of the two eating their food, then writing a description in the area below. "First meal after training on Route 1. They're indifferent about the food. Gotta learn to be a better chef." When he was done, he deposited the photograph in his photo box. After they were done eating, Ash put the rest of the cooled down food in a Ziplock bag before getting out a little bit of oil. He cooked the charred parts off the cast iron pan before letting it sit. He planned to make camp for at least a day or two until Serena was supposed to fly into Viridian city. He was in no hurry to get the Viridian city. He did need to register for the Pokémon League Gym Challenge though. He sighed standing up.
His two Pokémon were drinking from the stream. He pulled out his canteen and drank some water watching the surroundings. He could see distant birds in the East. It was probably Pidgey. That species was on his catch list to train into a battler. Well, technically he wanted to catch at least one or a pair of every species. He wasn't expecting to catch any Legendary or Mythical Pokémon. Others, he simply wanted to study or to use in certain situations. If he could manage it, he was planning on training all of the Pokémon in his care. That meant a lot of rotating. He just hoped that his Pichu could handle being in a Poké Ball long enough if he needed to swap him out.
He spotted a group of purple rat Pokémon running through the field a couple yards out. Those were Rattata. He watched them run around a boulder and then into a burrow.
He let out a sigh before stretching. "You two ready?"
The two Pokémon ran up to him and was ready to train. He knew he wanted to see if Charmander could learn Ember a little early. That was one of the things wanted to work on with him. As for Pichu, Ash knew that his move pool was extremely limited due to being a considered a baby Pokémon. He opened his Pokédex and looked at the lineup for moves the two could learn.
Charmander Leveled learn-set –
1 – Scratch, Growl
7 – Ember
10 – Smokescreen
13 – Metal Claw
16 – Evolves into Charmeleon (Note that any moves after designated evolution level in this leveled Learn-set are only correct for Charmander)
19 – Rage
25 – Scary Face
31 – Flamethrower
37 – Slash
43 – Dragon Rage
49 – Fire Spin
Pichu Leveled Learn-set –
1 – Thunder Shock, Tail Whip, Charm
8 – Thunder Wave
11 – Sweet Kiss
16 – Nasty Plot
Ash kept in mind that anything past their evolutionary stages would be subject to change as far as what moves they learned naturally. Say for instance, If Charmander evolved at level 16 like he would normally in the wild, any moves he could potentially learn after the evolutionary level could potentially be lost or moved around when he is a Charmeleon. From level 16, Charmeleon could learn everything natural on his leveled learn set. Once Charmeleon evolved at level 36, it's the same situation as if he decided to remain a Charmander instead of evolving, only it is as a Charmeleon. The downside to natural evolution, is say Charmander doesn't want to evolve until level 19 to learn Rage. If there was a move that Charmeleon could learn at level 16 through level 18, then that move could be potentially lost from learning due to being level 19 when it evolved. Plus, the Moveset would probably remain similar and a new move or two would be available, but it'd be at a different level most likely. That's where TMs came in, or Technical Machine. For almost every move there was a TM. TM was a high-tech hologram disc that allowed one to learn the move. If Ash wanted to teach his Charmander the move Flamethrower early, the TM would show exactly how to teach it to his Pokémon. It was more for the trainer. There were limitations, however. Some Pokémon couldn't learn a move no matter how many times they watched it or learned from it. For instance, Charmander couldn't learn most grass type moves. In fact, only one in the evolutionary line could learn one; it was Charizard. The grass move in question was called Solar Beam, a powerful Grass type move. Ash knew that Charmander wouldn't be able to learn any water type moves. One of the functions of the TM is to warn the trainer if the Pokémon is compatible or not with the TM the move would before. There was another downside to TMs. They could get expensive. Higher powered moves and those that originated from different regions tended to get pricy. Such as Wild Charge. Ash didn't know what TM it was, but it was an electric move that originated in the Unova. He remembered watching a video of it during a class at Professor Oak's during a foreign Pokémon battle lesson.
He looked up from his Pokédex at his Pokémon after coming out of his thoughts. He almost wished he had an Ember TM right about now.
He was stumped on how to try and teach a Pokémon a move before its level. "I'm not sure how to teach you it," Ash replied, "But I do know that there are two methods of releasing ember." The Charmander tilted his head, paying attention. "You can either exhale it or billow it from your tail flame. Judging from your instinct to whip your tail in such a way to try and expel some embers, I'd say that's probably the easiest way to learn it."
"Mander!" Charmander said nodding as if agreeing with Ash.
Ash walked over to the foldable table he set up and cleared it neatly from the cookware. "The only thing we can try is to use the fire as a target." He then picked the table up and put it under one of the trees nearby. "So, I want you to keep trying with your tail. He then placed everything that was on the table beforehand, back on. Charmander kept swishing his tail, almost like the move Tail Whip, at the camp fire. While Charmander was working on that, Ash turned to his Pichu.
"Now Pichu…." Ash said flipping to his Pokédex, "What can we get you to learn?" He looked up briefly a Pichu who was watching Charmander viciously attack a campfire with his tail. "You know Thunder Shock, Charm, Tail Whip, and Charge. So…." He paused looking at the types that the moves were. "…Two electric type moves, a normal type, and a fairy type. Three status moves and a Special one. Charm lowers the opponents attack, Tail Whip lowers opponents defense, and Charge doubles the attack power of the next electric type moved used. Charge Huh?" He started to look at its information more closely. "Must be a move that originated in….Sinnoh?" He read the information. "Nope. Hoenn. Wonder who your other parent was? And what is this locked move? Volt Tackle. I don't think I've ever heard of it before."
"No Data found on the move Volt Tackle…" The Pokédex replied, "This information was inserted by Professor Oak at the request of Red Ketchum. Volt Tackle is a move that was invented by Red Ketchum during his time in the Hoenn Region. Must be unlocked through extensive training as a Pikachu or Raichu. Recommend upgrading Pokédex for more information."
"So, dad created a move huh?" Ash spoke impressed, "Cool." If there was one thing Ash knew of, from seeing videos of his father Pokémon Battle back in the day, it was that there were many combinations that moves could create, such as using two moves at once to create a new move. Though, the new move isn't always compatible. These "new" moves hardly ever seen the light of day as official moves as the results are often not repeatable with different Pokémon.
He briefly looked back at Charmander who was still attacking, trying to learn the move Ember. "Alright Pichu," He said putting away his Pokédex, "It's said that you'll shock yourself if you use any electric attacks. I think we need to work on your control, so you don't do so….right?"
"Pichu!" Pichu agreed nodding.
Ash looked around. There was a boulder on the edge of the campsite. It would be the perfect target to practice thunder shock on as rock could stand up to electric attacks. That was why rock and ground types were immune to them. "Okay Pichu." He said, "I want you to use Thunder Shock on that boulder."
Pichu nodded before releasing a Thunder Shock at the boulder. Pichu's cheeks sparked before he tensed up and unleashed the bolt of electricity at the boulder, which remained unharmed. The bolt lasted maybe a second or two. "Pi!" Pichu squeaked letting go of the attack before shaking his head. It must have rebounded or something. He fell back, sitting down letting out a tired "Pichu…."
"Are you okay buddy?" Ash asked walking over and picking him up in his hands. The tiny mouse could fit in the palm of his cupped hands comfortably.
It took a moment for Pichu to shake his head then respond back with, "Pichu!" He uttered nodding then getting up and hopping out of his trainer's hands before going back to use Thunder Shock on the boulder. He zapped himself again. Ash looked between his Pokémon, encouraging them every now and then to keep going.
-1:21 PM-
-2:38 PM-
-3:45 PM-
"Take a break you two," Ash commanded sitting down. He was kind of stiff, standing there all day trying to encourage the two. He'd have to come up with some kind of exercise routine for himself.
"Charmander!" Charmander said clearly frustrated and whipping his tail again. He finally produced some embers. Charmander had been failing to produce anything that looked like an Ember attack for the past three hours. His frustration seemed to become more and more profound.
Ash's Pokédex dinged, "Charmander has learned a new move. Ember."
"Well I'll be," Ash said smiling, "You did it buddy."
"Char?" Charmander said in slightly confusion, "Charmander!" He was a happy little lizard who immediately hugged his trainer's leg. Ash bent down on one knee to his eye level and picked up the two-foot-tall Pokémon wrapping him in a hug before holding him out before the little lizard's tail caught his clothes on fire. "I'm so happy for you too," Ash replied warmly. Pichu tilted his head looking a little disappointed.
"Pichu," He said ears drooping and sitting on the ground.
"Huh?" Ash uttered noticing the little mouse and placing Charmander back on the ground before sitting crisscross in front of the two. "Aw come on Pichu." He went to rub the little mouse on top of his head but with two fingers as one hand was probably too big. "You'll get it. When you evolve, moves like Thunder Shock won't hurt as bad."
"Pichu," The tiny mouse pokémon said as if saying, "I guess so…"
"Look." Ash affirmed, "I'm proud of both of you. Our first day of training is complete. This is only our first day together. You can't expect to be the strongest yet. So don't be sad or disappointed. Let's just relax." With that, Ash laid back on the ground, extending his legs between the two Pokémon and putting his hands behind his head resting.
Charmander and Pichu just looked at each other in with curiosity before joining their trainer on either side of him, lying on their back. Ash looked up at the sky wishing that he could become closer to Pokémon. Of course he wanted to study all the pokémon in the region as well as any region he travels to. But he also wanted to become closer with every single species out there; like he was trying to do with his two Starter Pokémon. Technically, only Charmander was a starter, but Pichu was given to him the same day. He probably dozed off for a few moments with those being his last thoughts.
When he woke up, he felt something against his sides. Along with his two starter pokémon, was an assortment of wild Pokémon. Pidgey, Rattata, Spearow, Mankey, Sandshrew, and Poliwag…. Ash was perplexed. Then he looked up at the sky. What he saw was a Pokémon lit in pure gold energy. It was flying directly over him. He couldn't make out what Pokémon it was. But its distinctive cry had gotten to him. The cry had filled the sky, making it blissful. A warm fuzzy feeling washed over him. The sound was so beautiful….it was so enchanting that tears fell from his eyes.
"Your wish has been granted….Though I am not the Wishmaker, I can bestow to you upon this gift." Ash blinked before seeing something float down in the wind. A feather with a gold color to it. Ash sat up and caught it with open palms cupped. "Hold onto that. When it changes to all three colors….you are worthy of me. Those who are worthy of this bestowed gift…..may touch my wing." It was a bird. Ash could see it now. It was as bright as the sun, but it was flying so far away. He could barely hear it. "Good luck…..Cho…" He couldn't hear it. He only noticed it flying Northwest. He watched it until the gold energy covered bird left visibility.
"Ash…." He heard, "What's wrong?" He looked around trying to find the source of voice. "Are you okay?" It was coming right on his lap. He looked down to see a little yellow mouse. Ash just stared. Did his Pichu just talk? "Ash?"
"What in the world….?"
End of Chapter 1
A/N:
Topic – Pokémon Food chain and real animals: So in this series, due to that lack of Pokémon that can be killed for meats such as beef, pork, poultry, and fish in certain regions, I am bringing in real life animals into this Pokémon world. The reason being is because I can't see using Pokémon as a food source when not all the food groups will be represented well. I'm not saying they aren't represented at all in canon, but I hardly doubt that Miltank and Tauros are so common in every region that they can supply beef constantly. This goes the same with the Torchic evolutionary line and any of the pig-like lines(lechonk, spoink, and tepig). Fish is another story as there are plenty of fish Pokémon out there, but I'm going to apply the same rule. I know there's a Pokémon food chain, but there are various Pokédex entries involving real-life animals and usually it's when Pokémon are hunting them. So he's my solution. Pokémon are considered sentient, whether they are wild or not. A lot of them may not be able to understand things on a human level, but they are smart. Animals however are debatable(I am not going to get into the ethics of animal husbandry and consumption by humans with anyone, I used to live on a farm and am a hunter) Animals that will be used for food sources: Cow, chicken, turkey, duck, dove, quail, shrimp, crab, flounder, bass, sea bass, tuna, bream, sheep, goat, mussel, clam, oyster, pig/hog, frog, pheasant, etc. This also goes for dairy products. Other creatures such as insects, coral, etc. that play a minor role in the Pokémon universe will be included as well.
Topic – Technology in this series: So, I've noticed the technology becomes more and more profound and modernized as the anime and series goes on. Say for instance, the PokéGear didn't appear until Gen 2 and even had a radio. In gen 1, there wasn't much technology as far as communication goes, from what I can remember. Yeah there was the camera phones in buildings, such as the Pokémon center, but none were handheld until the PokéGear and even that was basically a cellphone. It was like a landline and at the time was the one of the only ways to communicate. Of course, there was email and internet. As an early 90's baby all of the Pokémon Transfer system was amazing as well as the other technology that appeared. As the series went on, technology seemed to advance as well, as evident by the different gear one could get in the games such as the PokéGear, PokéNav, or Pokétch. I just feel that technology is more advanced in some areas, while others are not…and I'm here for that retro kind of stuff. It kind of brings back my childhood. There were two things that always amazed me. Poké Ball's and the near infinite storage that you get in the games or how Brock could literally store a whole campsite in his backpack. Since you can catch Pokémon in Poké Balls and shrink them(or turn them into energy) why can't we apply the same logic to anything in a Trainer's Backpack? So that's where PokéCaps came into my head. It's like a storage inside of your backpack. It also may have been inspired somewhat by DBZ.
Topic – TM's and Moves: So there is a TM for almost every move out there. The only thing about it, is that if it's a signature move such as Volt Tackle, no other evolutionary line can learn it but that line. They are reusable as I find it annoying that TM's are a one-time use only, especially in the earlier generations.
