Alina was never an orphan. Discovered by Grisha examiners in Dva Stolba when she is 9 years old, she is taken from her troubled family and grows up in the Little Palace as the Darkling's protege. Alina is forever caught in the expectations of powerful men. Perhaps no surprise that she grows up with a fierce temper, hating being controlled, and a knack for seeing through lies.

Alina dreams of a mysterious man and soon finds her darkest dreams turning into reality.

For as long as anyone could remember, there had only ever been one Darkling—one person in all of Ravka who could summon the power of the shadows. No one, not even Esfir herself, expected that century-old truism would unexpectedly be proven false, and especially not by a common thief.
