Problematic Parents

Fiona let out a sigh. At least Sabina had agreed to meet her family. She couldn't quite shake the feeling that this dinner was going to be an absolute disaster from start to finish. She knew that her therapist had told her not to center on negative thoughts.

It was a little hard when her parents considered any dates she brought home fair game the second that they broke up. At least she had convinced them not to have Rufus or Serenity at the dinner. Rufus was, well, the type who scared any woman with sense. Serenity was just…her age exactly and not the brightest. It was clear that neither of her parents were invested in the marriage any longer.

DING! DONG!

The bell reverberated through the house. Fiona swept towards the door. She pulled it open to a very professionally dressed Sabina. "You wore a suit?"

Sabina grinned slightly. Fiona was a little bit concerned at her mildly wolfish expression. She had a sinking suspicion that Sabina wasn't a fan of her parents. Fiona had, of course, explained the situation. "You said business formal. This is business formal. If your parents are afraid of a woman in a suit, they can grow the fuck up and join the twenty-first century."

Fiona shut the door behind Sabina. Honestly, the suit was probably one of the sexiest things she had ever seen. The fact that both of her parents would disapprove of Sabina just for that helped. Fiona began the tour. "Upstairs are the bedrooms and…"

The tour ended at the dining room. Her parents were waiting on the other side of the door. Sabina was looking thoroughly amused at this point. Fiona sighed as she opened the door. "Hi. This is Sabina, my new girlfriend."

Her father sniffed slightly at the two of them. Her mother stared at Sabina like she was an alien. Sabina beamed at them as though she hadn't noticed their rudeness. "I'm Sabina Pleasure, a patent lawyer. I do hope the dinner meets everyone's expectations."

Fiona stifled a grin. Sabina hadn't said it was a pleasure to meet them. Both of her parents narrowed their eyes at the mild slight as Sabina sat down. Fiona would never admit it to anyone but Sabina, but she was currently rooting for her girlfriend in this battle of wills.

"It's always intriguing to meet Fiona's dates."

Sabina watched as her wine was poured. Fiona didn't have to wait very long for her retort. She was aware that Sabina was protective of her. "I'm sure it must have been, given that the two of you were intrigued enough to date them."

Fiona nearly choked on her bread roll. Her parents looked as though they had been slapped. Sabina was fantastic.

"I have never been spoken to in such a fashion."

Fiona rolled her eyes as her father fell back on formality. She knew that he used it as a conversational shield when he wanted to bide for time. That, and correcting people's manners. "I'm only following the example of my betters."

…Was that a class pun?! Fiona was in love. Her mother's nostrils flared. Fiona had no idea

why, given that her mother insulted her father on a near-hourly basis. "Why don't you let me handle my husband, you little tart."

Sabina didn't even bat an eye. Fiona thought it was a bit rich for her mother to call anyone a tart. Especially after the whole Rufus thing. "From what I've heard, Mrs. Friend, you haven't handled your husband in years and you've been handling more people than I have."

Fiona almost wished that she was filming this dinner. It was gold. She was going to treasure every second of it. she didn't even care if she got disowned on the spot for dating Sabina.

Fiona's parents both seemed shaken into silence as the first course arrived. The awkward silence around the room was almost stifling. It was better than a lecture about how women weren't suitable husbands. Or accusations against Sabina of gold-digging. The meal continued in silence for what seemed like an eternity. Fiona vaguely wondered who would break first. Her parents or Sabina? The dessert arrived in the same silence. She noticed the servants looked very nervous.

"Give me one good reason that I shouldn't disown Fiona on the spot for dating you."

It was her father. Fiona felt a knot beginning to form in her stomach. This could be very bad if he decided to do it. "You don't have any other kids. Not to mention, for all of Fiona's dates that you've accused of gold-digging, you failed to do a background check on either of yours."

Her parents exchanged an inscrutable look. Fiona knew that it was a bit of a sore point with them. There had been plenty of people who had tried to marry them for money. It was one of the reasons they tried to insist that Fiona only date within her own class. "Rufus owes more money to cocaine dealers than this entire estate is worth. Serenity has been posting about her 'sugar daddy' for the past six months. And before you start, I wouldn't have researched if I didn't care about Fiona's future."

There was a long pause. Her father cleared his throat. Wow. Fiona was extra done with everyone in her immediate circle besides Sabina. "We will have our people look into this."

They finished the meal in dead silence. This had to easily be the most awkward meal of Fiona's life. Fiona still didn't have regrets about the dinner. Not to mention, it was nice to have a date who tried to stick up for her.

Sabina finished her cake fairly quickly. Fiona rose and offered Sabina her arm. Her parents simply stared at them as they left. She shut the door. "Damn, you weren't kidding about them being a pair of shameless fuckers."

Fiona let out a sigh. Please no breakup. Please no breakup. She bit her lower lip. "I'm sorry about them."

Sabina shook her head. Fiona felt a hand on her shoulder. Sabina smiled at her. "Don't worry, I don't judge people for having shitty parents. That said, there can be issues if the in-laws hate me that much. Why don't I text you for the next date?"

Fiona felt her chest beginning to ache. Sabina gently kissed her as she left. Fiona hated her parents.
