Seventeen year old Robert Dixon arrived at his girlfriend Cindy's grandparents' house in his father's car. He saw her carrying two suitcases and two bags as she walked down the driveway. He stopped the car and got out when he saw she was crying.
"Cindy what happened" she stopped and put the bags on the ground then hugged him which he did in return till she pulled back.
"Can we get out of here"
"Sure" he helped pick her bags up and put them in the car then they got in and Robert drove back down the driveway and drove to the car park close to the beach where they meet every weekend.
When they arrived. Robert turned to Cindy and put his hand on her knee. "Want to tell me what happen"
"I am so sick of what's going on. I saw Granddad give Paul money again"
"Well, they can afford it Cindy and they also give you money"
"Which you know I turn down since I got an after school job, they don't"
"You spoke your mind, didn't you"
"Yeah"
She turned and looked out to sea thinking of her parents who died in a car accident when she was a year old. Paul is the oldest child by ten years, Max is older than her by eight years, James is older by six years and Kelly is older by three years. Cindy's mother was driving with their father back from a relative's funeral when the accident happened.
The car drove off the road and down an embankment killing both of their parents. A car that was coming from the opposite direction and a farmer witnessed the accident. The autopsy report stated that Cindy's mother died from heart failure, she had a weak heart valve which ruptured which was the cause of her death and the accident. She was only twenty-nine years old.
Cindy's father was a foster child while growing up and didn't know where his parents were. Cindy's mother was an only child. They had Cindy mother in their early forties and was their miracle child and since her grandparents are next of kin, they had a choice to raise their grandchildren or they would go into foster care.
Their daughter left them when she turned eighteen and married her high school sweetheart who was at the police academy and she was going to university to become a lawyer. Cindy's parents did not approve of their daughters choice of a husband. Leading to her grandparents did not hear further about their daughter's life until the night the police arrived on their doorstep to give them the bad news about the death of their daughter and son in law and about the children whom they met once and took them into their home.
"Cindy, are you ok" Robert asked. She turned to him and said "I will be, I was thinking about mum and dad".
"You were little when they were killed."
"I know, I was thinking about what grandma told me years ago about how mum walked out of their house because granddad didn't like her choice for a boyfriend. They had a huge fight before she walked out of the door and their lives."
"Was it the last time she saw them?"
"Yeah, and now granddad is making up for lost time. he gave mum everything she wanted but when it came to boyfriends, dad was the only guy she ever loved and granddad didn't like him".
"Now history repeating itself,"
"Yes it is, I wish he can be happy for me. If it wasn't for you, I would still be in the house and not have to worry about money or a job. You helped me realize that you can't always rely on family or money and not to worry about a job."
"That is true, working for that money is the best thing you could ever do and when it was payday, I can tell how happy you are."
"I am and I'm going to keep on working and follow my goals" then she put her hand into his.
"You want to become a radio operator for the navy and I want to be a nurse."
"A navy nurse?" Cindy smiled and leaned over and kissed him.
"A navy nurse, I love you Robert. No matter what happens in the future I will be there for you".
"I'll be there for you and I love you too" they kiss once more.
"So, tell me what happened," He asked.
Over an hour earlier
Cindy returned home when she finished work since she gotten an after-school job. She walked inside when she saw her grandfather giving Paul his weekly allowance.
"Granddad when are you going to up the amount"?
"Why isn't ten thousand enough?"
"No, I bought a condo and it going to cost me over eight grand a week for the mortgage."
"It must be a nice condo" asked their grandfather.
"It is granddad, it cost over three million dollars and has great views of the harbor bridge".
"I bet is does, I'll think about it" Paul smiled.
"Why don't you get a job then you could afford to pay off your fancy condo sooner" Cindy said.
"It's none of your business," Paul retorted.
"There are people like myself out there working hard to earn our own money and here you are twenty-nine years old getting money from granddad."
"That's enough from you Cindy," her grandfather said with a warning tone.
"Why not granddad, it's true. After all, you worked your butt off when you were my age so you could get to where you are today. I know that you are trying to make up lost time from when we were younger and since mum walked out of here. If you feel guilty then don't be. You know that both mum and dad worked hard and never asked you for money."
"Stop it"
"No granddad I'm seeing history repeating itself once again. Mum worked from when she was thirteen, and I'm doing the same. I'm working so I can earn my own money by baking biscuits, to eat them, you have got to earn them by making them, it is the same with money".
"Your grandmother said that years ago to Rose".
"Now she said it to me and I took it to heart granddad. At least one of your grandchildren got a job".
"You are all I have left", said her grandfather sadly.
"I know we are, but if the others want their weekly pocket money they should earn it like I earn my wages", said Cindy in a desperate attempt to try to get her grandfather to understand her point of view.
"There is absolutely no way granddad is going to make me work," Paul said.
"The only work your good at Paul is in the sack"
"Shut up you littleā¦" Paul said angrily
"That is enough from both of you" interrupted their grandfather.
"You're not going to change your ways are you granddad?" feared Paul.
"Why should I? You and your brothers and sister have got a good life" said their grandfather which seemed to pacify Paul.
"A life which you know, mum and dad would disapprove of" retorted Cindy.
"That is enough from you Cindy, I will not tolerate this kind behavior in this house" he said yelling at her.
"Fine granddad, I will go and pack my things and leave. At least then there would be one less mouth to feed and worry about. At least I'm honest and I don't care about your money. There is one thing in the world that you can't buy and that is love. I love you granddad as a person, not your money." she turned on her heels and proceeded to walk up the stairs.
"You come back down here Cindy" her grandfather yelled at her.
Cindy paused for a moment and gave a parting comment of "No, can you please think about what I have said tonight". Cindy then continued to walk up the stairs and into her bedroom where she called Robert asking him to meet her later. Cindy then began the arduous task of packing until she had packed everything she owned. Cindy collected her bags and prepared to leave her childhood room for the last time before walking down stairs with her possessions.
Her grandparents were stood in the hall talking to each other and as Cindy walked past them, her grandfather said to her "if you walk out that door, don't bother to returning."
Cindy stopped and turned to look at him one last time to say goodbye to him as she turned around to walk to the door and open it one last time.
"Cindy" She stops and turns to her grandmother and smiles.
"I'll be fine grandma. I'm going to follow my dreams and I know that Robert is going to be there for me"
"That boy is no good for you," her grandfather said. She turned to him.
"I guess you said the same thing to mum before she walked out the door?"
"Get out," he said, yelling at her.
Cindy looked at her grandmother "I love you grandma" then turned and walked out the door as tears started to fall.
Present
"Now you know what happened", after Cindy recounted the events of the evening as they sat on the bonnet of the car watching the sunset.
Robert tried to reassure his girlfriend by saying "you never know, one day he might look for you".
"I doubt it Robert", replied Cindy.
"Come on let head back to my place, lucky school almost over" as Robert gathered Cindy's hand before drawing her in for a cuddle.
"True" the couple then kissed, before Robert walked Cindy to her side of the car and opened her door before getting in the car himself and starting the engine before starting the drive back to his father's house.
