Chapter 1: The return

A young man with brown short hair with the sides of his head cleaned and shaved and a curly style on top of his head and blue slash green eyes about 27 seven years old, was sitting on a park bench with a suitcase next to him

He leaned back on the bench and sighed as he crack his neck and got up from the bench

He grabbed his suitcase and started walking through the sidewalk of the lovely neighborhood but for the young man, it only carried pain and sorrow

He arrived at a beautiful brown two-floor house and sighed again, he found himself doing that ever since he got back to Seattle

He walked up the stairs and rang the doorbell of the house as he looked around in nostalgia

He heard footsteps coming down and through the glass door he saw a face he hasn't seen in a while

He lift his hand and smiled and then cringed inwardly when he saw the woman in front of him frown her brow at him

"Hi Mer, it's been a while, hasn't it?" The male said as the woman inside the house opened the door

"Nick, what the hell are you doing here?" Meredith asked with a frown on her face and Nicholas sighed

"Can we talk about this inside? If you still don't want me here after I'm done talking I can leave," Nick said and Meredith sighed and moved to let the male in

Both young adults walked to the living room and took a seat in front of one another as Nick's eyes kept scanning the area

"You're doing it again Klaus," Meredith said and the male sighed

"Sorry, you know how it is," Nick said and then chuckled "And Klaus? Really? How long has it been since you call me that?" Nick asked with a smirk and Meredith grumbled

"Shut up, old habits die hard," Meredith said and then looked at Nick with a hard look "So, what brings you here dear brother of mine?" Meredith asked in curiosity and Nick took out an envelope from his jacket and place it in front of his sister

"Oh you got to be shitting me," Meredith said and Nick couldn't help but chuckle

"We're definitely brother and sister, that was my same reaction," Nick said chuckling "Guessing they offer you a place too?" Nick said and Meredith nodded

"Probably the chief couldn't wait to have the two prodigal sons of Ellis Grey on his roster," Nick said and Meredith snort

"There's nothing prodigal about us, mother made sure of that," Meredith said and Nick couldn't help but nod

"And that's the reason I'm here, among other reasons, but mainly to flip her off, and become the thing she always told me I couldn't be," Nick said leaning back in his seat

"What other reasons then?" Meredith asked in curiosity and Nick looked at her

"I was selfish Mer, and I'm truly sorry for that, but after a while of dealing with mom, and her hateful snide comments about my gender and her practically hating my existence, I just couldn't take it anymore," Nick said rubbing his hands together "And I always regrated not taking you with me," Nick said and Meredith crossed her arms

"Why didn't you?" Meredith asked in curiosity and a little bit of anger

"I don't know, no actually I do know," Nick said rubbing his head "I was jealous of you," Nick said and hold up a hand to stop Meredith from protesting "I know, I shouldn't have been, but Mer, our mother, in her twisted way, and by no means it should have been that way, she gave you everything, she wanted you to be better than her, and me? She was content on letting me die, in fact, she told me that the day I left," Nick said and Meredith gain a shocked look on her face

"What?" Meredith said and Nick nodded

"Yeah, pretty shocking I know, but she caught me packing, and told me "Good, I didn't want you here in the first place, I should have aborted you, but Thatcher didn't want me to, I don't want to have anything to do with you," she said and after so many comments like that, I just had enough and left without a second thought," Nick said and Meredith gain a look of sympathy on her face

"Then why did you come back, Klaus? I would have been mad if you'd decided to stay away, but I would've understood it," Meredith said and Nick smiled at her

"But then who would take care of you?" Nick said and Meredith looked down at the floor "Mer, we have the emotional damage that could fill a freaking circus, I know I have no right to say this, but it's me and you against the world, it's always been that and it will always be that I'm sorry I lost track of that," Nick said and Meredith sighed

"Mom has Alzheimer's, she started presenting symptoms a year after you left," Meredith said and Nick looked at her in surprise and then snorted

He started chuckling and then a burst of full-on laughter invaded his lungs as Meredith smirked and giggled alongside him "Ah, I'm sorry, it's just that, who would've thought that the fucking knowledge is everything woman would lose it all," Nick said and Meredith snorted

"I know right, serves the bitch right," Meredith said and Nicholas managed to control his laughter

"Have you taken care of her?" Nick asked and Meredith nodded and that surprised Nick "Why?" he asked in surprise

"Some have to Klaus," Meredith said "Besides I just place her in a nursing home, and I visit from time to time," Meredith said and Nick nodded

"Fair enough," Nick said and then looked at the envelope in front of him "So, can I stay here or do I have to go look for a hotel to stay the night?" Nick said and Meredith sighed

"You know, I was going to sell the house," Meredith said and Nick raised an eyebrow

"Really?" Nick asked in curiosity "Are you going to?" Nick asked

"Well now that you're here, I guess I'm keeping it," Meredith said with a smirk on her face and Nick chuckled

"So, I'm staying?" Nick asked with a smirk

"I guess dealing with you wouldn't be so bad," Meredith said and Nick chuckled

"Such kind words dear sister," Nick said and both brother and sister chuckled at that comment "I'll take my old room, and then I'm going exploring the city, go reminiscing," Nick said and Meredith nodded

"You're not going to the intern's dinner?" Meredith asked with curiosity and Nick shook his head

"Nah, it's still too weird to be back, I want to get my footing back, and visit some old friends," Nick said and Meredith laughed

"So, you're looking for your old bike?" Meredith said and Nick grumbled

"Nope, mother destroyed that remember?" Nick said and Meredith nodded "Nah, Doug owes me one, think I can get a car from him with a discount," Nick said and Meredith nodded

"Don't want me to take you to places with mine?" Meredith asked with a mocking tone in her voice

"Nope, I still want my dignity thank you very much," Nick said standing up and dusting his pants "It is good to see you again Mer," Nick said with a smile and his sister smiled at him watching him leave the house his suitcase left on the couch he was seating on

Next day early morning

A recently bathed Nicholas was eating cereal in the kitchen when he heard someone running up the stairs, he raised an eyebrow and walked to where the sound came from

He walked into the living room and saw a man dressing up and putting on a shirt "Uh, hi?" Nick said with confusion and the man turned to look at him

"Oh, hey," The man said looking at Nick with a raised eyebrow "Do you live here?" The man asked and Nick nodded

"So, did you have fun with my sister?" Nick asked with a smirk crossing his arms and the man gulped

"Ah well," The man said nervously and Nick chuckled

"Relax, it's been a while since I put on the big brother act, but between you and me, she killed me if she ever finds out," Nick said and the man chuckled "Nicholas, you can call me Nick," Nick said putting a hand forward

"Derek," The man said shaking Nick's hand

"So, Derek what do you do for a living?" Nick asked in curiosity

"I'm a doctor at Seattle Grace hospital, neurosurgeon to be precise," Derek said and Nick snorted

"Oh wow, fancy way of meeting my boss," Nick said and Derek raised an eyebrow "I'm an intern there, start today actually," Nick said and Derek chuckled nervously "Want a ride doctor?" Nick asked and Derek looked at his watch and sighed

"Actually, I would appreciate that," Derek said and Nick nodded

"Meet me at the front door in five minutes, I need to finish my cereal," Nick said and Derek nodded finishing changing up

Nick went back to the kitchen and grabbed the bowl and put it on the sink, he grabbed his jacket and put it around him as he walked to the main entrance

"Come on sex doctor, or you'll make me late," Nick said chuckling as both males walked out the door

"Sex doctor? You know I'm your boss right?" Derek said with a smirk on his face

"Not out here, in the hospital, you will, out here you're the dude that slept with my sister," Nick said chuckling as both males walked to Nick's car

"Fair enough," Derek said and then saw the dark blue mustang on the sidewalk "Nice ride," Derek said whistling at Nick's car

"Thanks," Nick said as both males enter the car

Nick drove in silence as he tried to remember the route to the hospital, it's been a while since he's been there, waiting for his mother to finish shifts so they could eat

"So, are you from Seattle?" Derek asked in curiosity

"Yeah, born here, moved to Boston with the family when I was a kid, till I needed a change of space and went to California to study medicine at Stanford," Nick said and then glanced at Derek "You?" Nick asked

"New York, born and raised," Derek said

"Oh, what brings you to Seattle?" Nick asked with curiosity in his voice

"I needed a change of space," Derek said using Nick's words and the younger adult chuckled

"So, neurosurgery, what is that like?" Nick asked in curiosity and Derek looked intrigued

"It's pretty fun actually, you're interested in specializing in neurosurgery?" Derek asked and Nick shrugged his shoulders

"I believe in living in the moment, neurosurgery sounded cool when I was studying, but I have seven years of medical residency, I have time to think about it," Nick said and Derek chuckled

"It just means I have time to convince you," Derek said and Nick snorted

"You just met me and you want to make me your apprentice?" Nick asked and Derek chuckled

"I like to start early, besides I always wanted an apprentice," Derek said and Nick smiled

"Then you better make a compelling argument," Nick said as he saw the hospital in the distance "Maybe offer me a couple of surgeries to sweeten the deal," Nick said cheekily

"Yeah, I don't want to lose my job so early," Derek said and Nick sighed

"Hey, I had to try," Nick said laughing a little bit "And here we are, doctor, oh shit I didn't even ask you your last name," Nick said and Derek looked at him

"We'll need to work on your language young apprentice of mine," Derek said smirking "It's Shepard, if you ever get into my service, I'll expect nothing but the best," Derek said and Nick smirked

"I'll try my best Dr. Shepard," Nick said as he saw Derek leave his car and then Nick leaned back in his seat and sighed

"Let's make mom proud," Nick whispered as he exited the car and locked it up as he walked through the entrance of the hospital

He followed the signs to where he needed to go and then saw a group of young adults all hanging around the hallway

"What are we waiting for?" Nick asked the closest intern and the brown short haired male looked at him

"We're waiting for the chief, no idea why," The male said and then put a hand forward "Alex Karev," The male said and Nick shook his hand

"Nicholas Grey, but call me Nick," Nick said "What made you come to this hospital?" Nick asked with curiosity

"Really? Small talk?" Alex asked sarcastically

"Well it was that or awkward silence," Nick said with a smirk on his face and both males chuckled

Then from the door in front of them, an old African American man stepped out and looked at the interns

"My name is Dr. Webber," The man in front of them "Follow me," The man said walking back to the room he had come out

"Heh, dramatic much," Nick whispered to Karev and the other male chuckled

They followed Dr. Webber into an OR as the chief of surgery started speaking "Each one of you come here hopeful, wanting in the game," Dr. Webber started saying as he led the interns into the OR

"A month ago, you were in med school taught by doctors," Dr. Webber said "Today you are the doctors," Dr. Webber said and Nick walked into the OR and started scanning the area with his eyes taking everything in "The seven years you spend here as a surgical resident will be the best and the worst of your life, you will be pushed to your breaking point," Dr. Webber said and then Nick started looking around at the persons there

Most of them were pretty forgettable, while a few of them stood out "Look around you, say hello to your competition," Dr. Webber said and then Nick's eyes fell into a familiar girl

An Asian American woman with curly black hair turned and her eyes settle on Nick's as both of them raised their eyebrows and then smirked at each other and kept staring at each other neither of them breaking the stare

Then their stare broke off as Dr. Webber started speaking again "Eight of you will switch to an easier specialty, five of you will crack under the pressure, and two of you will be asked to leave," Dr. Webber said and Nick sent a smirk to her sister who smirked back when she saw him

"This is your starting line, this is your arena, how well you play? That's up to you," Dr. Webber said and Nick cracked his neck in preparation for what the day will bring

Intern's locker room sometime later

Nick was changing into his scrubs and noticed that Alex was changing next to him "Look at that, locker buddies," Nick said and Alex chuckled "Who did you get?" Nick asked and Alex looked at the paper they gave him

"Someone named Johnson, who knows who he or she is," Alex said, and Nick nodded "And you?" Karev asked Nick in curiosity

"Bailey, or if the rumors are true The Nazi," Nick said and Alex chuckled at him "What good luck I have am I right?" Nick said and Alex snorted

"Sucks to be you man," Alex said and Nick chuckled, then Alex heard his last name being called out "Seems I have to go, I normally don't say this but good luck man," Alex said and Nick nodded

"Don't kill anyone Karev," Nick said and Alex laughed heading out of the locker room

Nick finished changing up and put his medical coat around him, he walked around the lockers placing his stethoscope around his neck

"Fancy seeing you here Yang," Nick said seeing how his sister was talking to the Korean woman

"Same goes for you Grey, thought I wouldn't have to see your ugly ass ever again," Cristina Yang, the Korean woman said looking at him with a smirk on her face

"You two know each other?" Meredith asked in curiosity looking between the two of them

"Yeah, we both went to Stanford, bitch beat me for valedictorian, by two points," Nick said and Christina laughed

"Yep, I will never let him forget that," Cristina said and Nick grumbled as he leaned on a locker "Who did you get?" Yang asked and Nick crossed his arms

"Bailey, you?" Nick asked both women

"Same," Yang said and Nick's eyebrow twitched "Competition is back prodigy," Cristina said mockingly

"What kind of nickname is The Nazi anyway?" Meredith asked in curiosity and Nick chuckled

"You got the Nazi? So did I," A soft voice said and the trio looked to where the voice had come from "At least we will be tortured together, right? I'm George O'Malley, uh, we met at the mixer, you had a black dress with a slit up side, scrappy sandals…" George said and Nick couldn't help but snort

"You're like a puppy," Nick said walking away from the group into the main entrance of the locker room

He walked to the doctor listing the interns as he heard his last name being mentioned and was about to ask him about Bailey but Cristina beat him to it "Bailey?" Yang asked softly in curiosity

"Down the hall," The doctor said and both Cristina and Nick turn around to look at the petit African American woman

"That's the nazi?" Christina asked in confusion as she and Nick walked side by side

"Maybe it's ironic, they say that small people carry a temper," Nick said and Cristina snorted

"Maybe it's professional jealousy, maybe she's brilliant and they call her nazi because they're jealous," A blond pretty woman said smiling at the group "Maybe she's nice," She said and Nick scoffed

"God, you're going to give me diabetes," Nick said and Cristina chuckled

"Let me guess, you're the model?" Cristina asked rhetorically and the blond woman turn and frown at them

"Hi, I'm Isabel Stevens but everyone calls me Izzie," The blond woman said to the petit woman in front of them and the woman looked at her un-impress

"I have five rules, memorize them," Bailey said looking at the group of interns "Rule no bother sucking up, I already hate you, and that's not going to change," Bailey said and then pointed at the stuff on the counter

"Trauma protocol, phone list, pagers," Bailey said and the group looked at her in confusion except for one person

Nick quickly step forward and grabbed the notebooks and the pager and put the notebooks in his pockets and the pager on his waist just in time for when Bailey started walking away

"Nurses will page you, you answer every page at a run. A run, that's rule number two," Bailey said as the group of interns followed her through the hospital "Your first shift starts now and last forty-eight hours, you're interns," Bailey said walking through a bridge on the main entrance of the hospital

"Grunts, nobodies, the bottom of the surgical food chain, you run labs, write orders, work every second night till you drop and you don't complain!" Bailey said as she direct them into a room she opened the door and lit up the room

"On-call rooms, attendings hog them, sleep when you can, which brings me to rule number three, if I'm sleeping don't wake me unless you're patient is actually dying," Bailey said and the group nodded

"Rule number four, the dying patient better not be dead when I get there, not only would you have killed someone, but you would've also wake me for no reason, we clear?" Bailey said in full seriousness

Meredith then raised a hand and Bailey glared at her "Yes?" Bailey asked

"You said five rules, that was only four," Meredith said and then the pager of Bailey went off

"Rule number five, when I move you move," Bailey said as she started running through the hallways followed closely by the group of interns "Out of my way!" Bailey shouted to a group of doctors standing in the hallway

Bailey led them to the roof as they saw a helicopter landing on the helicopter landing spot

The helicopter's door opened, and a paramedic brought a young blond girl down in a stretcher trolley "What do we got?" Bailey asked as the interns started pushing the trolley

"Katie Brice, fifteen-year-old female, new onset seizures, intermittent for the past week, ID lost on route, started grand mal seizing as we descended." The paramedical said as the group got into a room and started taking care of the young woman

"All right, get her on her side," Bailey said and Nick quickly roll her over a thing Bailey noticed "Izzie, ten milligrams Diazepam," Bailey said and Meredith started putting the cables of the monitoring machine on Katie's back

"No, no, the white lead is on the right, righty whitey, smoke over fire, a large bore I.V, let's go," Bailey said as Nick started reading the chart of Katie as the young girl stopped seizing

"So I heard we got a wet fish on dry land," An African American adult said entering the room and looking around

Nick handed him the charts and Burke nodded at him and started reading the chart "Absolutely doctor Burke," Bailey said and Burke looked up

"Doctor Bailey, I'm going to shotgun her," Burke said noticing how Nick analyzed him with his eyes before turning to look at the patient in deep thought, Burke raised an eyebrow at that but decided to keep quiet

"That means every test in the books," Bailey said as the intern group put their attention on her "CT, CBC, chem, seven, tux scree, Cristina you're on labs, George, Nick you're on patient workups, rotate with one another," Bailey said and Nick nodded in understanding "Meredith get Katie for a CT, she's your responsibility now," Bailey said and Meredith nodded

Bailey started to leave the room but Izzie perked up and grabbed the resident's attention "Wait, what about me?" Izzie asked in curiosity

"Oh, honey, you're on rectal exam duty," Bailey said and Nick hold back a snort of laughter as he tapped George's shoulder

"Let's get going puppy, the sooner we finish the better," Nick said and George followed behind Nick

Patients room sometime later

"Hi, Mr. and Ms. Savitch?" Nick said from the doorway and putting a hand in front of O'Malley stopping him from just entering the room

"Yes?" The woman in the room said and Nick smiled

"Hi, I'm Doctor Grey, and this here is Doctor O'Malley," Nick said smiling at the couple "We're here to check you in, can we start, or do you need a few minutes?" Nick asked and the man nodded as he made himself comfortable on the bed

"Excellent, Doctor O'Malley here will check your vitals while I'll ask you some questions is that alright Mr. Savage?" Nick said with a kind smile

"Sure," Mr. Savitch said and Nick grabbed the chart on the end of the bed and took out a pen

"So, Mr. Savitch you're here for a bypass surgery, right?" Nick asked as O'Malley brought out the kit for taking out the vital signs

"That's correct," Mr. Savitch said

"What kind of symptoms did you notice before coming here?" Nick asked and the man looked at his wife for a moment

"Uh, chest pain mostly, and sometimes I get tired easily," The man said and Nick nodded taking notes on the chart as O'Malley started hearing his breathing patterns

Nick waited a moment for O'Malley and then continue with his questions "The chest pain, on a scale of one to ten, how bad was it?" Nick asked

"About a seven, sometimes it jumped to an eight," Mr. Savitch said and Nick nodded and then looked at O'Malley

"Respiration seems fine, heart rhythms a little off," O'Malley said and Nick nodded

"Mr. Savitch, are you allergic to any kind of medicine or anesthesia?" Nick asked and the man shook his head "How much do you weigh Mr. Savitch?" Nick asked without looking at the man

"I don't know about 190 pounds," The man said and then saw George putting a vital monitor on Mr. Savitch's finger

"And your height sir?" Nick asked looking at the man

"Five ten I think," Mr. Savitch said nervously and Nick smiled

"Don't worry sir, I'm five eleven but I always say I'm six foot tall," Nick said and the man chuckled "George?" Nick asked O'Malley about the vital signs without asking the question in his mind

"Bmp's on 85 to 90, changing rapidly," O'Malley said and Nick nodded taking note of that

"Just two more questions sir, and we're good to start preparing you," Nick said and the man nodded "Have you ever had surgery before?" Nick asked

"No, this is my first," The man said as the couple held hands in nervousness

"Okay, final question, any relatives with heart problems?" Nick asked and the man shook his head "Excellent, then my questions are done, now Doctor O'Malley here is going to put you in an I.V," Nick said and the wife of the man looked at him in confusion

"What's an I.V?" Ms. Savitch asked in confusion

"Your husband cannot eat or have any drinks before surgery, this will help him stay hydrated for the time being, a simple precaution if you will," Nick said and the wife smiled

"Greetings you must be Mr. Savitch," Nick heard Burke's voice speak from the doorway as O'Malley took out the I.V kit

"What do we have here Grey?" Burke asked and Nick handed him the chart

"Tony Savitch, male of 43 years old, here for a bypass surgery, presents the normal chest pain and tiredness you would expect from a blocked artery, family doesn't have a history of heart diseases," Nick said and Burke nodded

"Which means?" Burke asked

"That the problem may be because of a diet choice or stress," Nick said and Burke smiled

"Nice job Grey," Burke said and then looked at the patient when he heard him wince "Grey what is O'Malley doing?" Burke asked annoyed

"I believe he's trying to put an I.V on the patient but he's being unsuccessful," Nick said trying to hold his laughter

"Please take over before O'Malley messes up more," Burke whispered to Nick, Nick nodded and walked to where O'Malley was

"Let me take over George," Nick said and George grumbled but stepped back nonetheless "Sorry about him, first-day nerves and all of that," Nick said to Tony and the man smiled

"It's fine, actually I'm kind of sad that I will not be able to eat any more bacon," Tony said as Nick put a blue ribbon on his upper arm just over the top of the elbow

"I wouldn't worry too much about it sir, I know soy ones sound disgusting but depending on how you cook them, they taste the same, close your fist for me, sir," Nick said and Tony close his fist

"Really? Are you certain or are you just telling me that because you're my doctor?" Tony asked

"Kind of both, but, I'm certain of it, my mother always tried to keep us, vegetarians, that being me and my sister, so when I tasted real bacon," Nick said tapping with two fingers the upper side of Tony's elbow trying to find a vein "Couldn't even taste the difference," Nick said with a smile as he found the vein

"Besides, the healthy you are the happier your family will be," Nick said inserting the needle in Tony's arm and the man didn't even notice it "There, all set," Nick said as he grabbed the I.V and made sure it was dropping hydration liquid

"Oh wow, I didn't even notice the injection," Tony said and Nick smirked "Thanks doc," Tony said

"It's fine, if you need anything here's the button for the nurses, they will come and handle anything you want, I will come back later to prepare you for surgery," Nick said looking at both wife and husband

Meanwhile, Burke was watching the scene with interest until O'Malley broke his attention

"I bet you missed a lot back in your early days," O'Malley said to Burke and the cardiologist looked at him with a raised eyebrow

"You and I, we're going to have great fun together," Burke said and then looked back at Grey "Keep doing your workups O'Malley," Burke said and the male nodded and walked out of the room "Grey, a word," Burke said and Nick looked at him and nodded

Both males walked out of the room and Burke looked at Nick up and down before talking up "Nice work there, the patient didn't even feel the injection, how did you do that?" Burke asked in curiosity

"Ah, I read an article once, that said that sometimes the mind doesn't react to pain if it's occupied, so I distracted Mr. Savitch by talking so he wouldn't feel pain or at least that it would be minimal," Nick said and Burke nodded

"Why go the extra mile for a patient?" Buke asked with curiosity

"They are nervous about the surgery, the least I can do it's make the time before it pleasant," Nick said and Burke smiled

"Back with Katie, you analyzed me, what was that all about?" Burke asked and Nick chuckled nervously

"You noticed that?" Nick asked nervously and Burke nodded "I have what is called hyperthymesia, or eidetic memory if you prefer, only a little stronger," Nick said and Burke raised an eyebrow

"What does that mean?" Burke asked

"Well someone with eidetic memory can recall any memory for a few seconds, like watching a three-second video, someone with photographic memory can remember anything, like looking at a picture, I'm a little bit different," Nick said scratching his head "I instead relieved whatever memory I decide to remember, I feel everything like I was back there when it happened," Nick said nervously

"So back then?" Burke said and Nick sighed

"I was engraving you in my memory, sort to speak, like creating a file out of you in my head," Nick said and Burke nodded

"That's one hell of a gift," Burke said and Nick nodded

"It can be, but then again," Nick said looking into Burke's eyes "I relived everything, and I mean everything," Nick said and Burke sighed

"Yeah, I can see the problem with that," Burke said and then looked behind him "Well I won't keep you anymore, god knows what O'Malley will do without you watching him," Burke said and Nick smiled a little

"I'll be keeping my eye on you Grey," Burke said and walked away, Nick sighed and then walked to where O'Malley had headed to

Hospital's Cafeteria

"I mean, the idiot took at least four tries before I took over, and that was in front of Burke, I kind of feel sorry for him," Nick said as he was seating next to Cristina eating his lunch

"Dude, seriously?" Cristiana asked in shock and laughter and Nick nodded as both interns chuckled

"Sush, he's coming," Nick said as both interns tried to hold their laughter

George took a seat at the end of the table and saw Izzie staring oddly at his food and saw that she wasn't eating

"This shift is a marathon, not a sprint, eat," George said and Izzie gulped

"You try eating after performing seventeen rectal exams, the nazi hates me," Izzie said and Nick chuckled

"She doesn't hate you, you just broke rule one before actually hearing it," Nick said eating his food

"At least Bailey is a resident, I have attendings hating me," George said

"You told Burke if he had made mistakes before, what did you expect?" Cristiana asked rhetorically

"Yeah, and then Grey went and did an excellent job in front of Burke, totally putting me down," George grumbled and Nick sighed

"Don't take it personally little puppy," Cristina said chuckling "Us mere mortals can't comprehend the abilities of little prodigy over here," Cristina said putting a hand on Nick's shoulder and the male adult grumbled and threw a chip at Yang's face

"Shut up," Nick said and Cristina chuckled

"You know both him and Meredith are inbred," Cristina said talking to Izzie and George

"Can we not talk about that please?" Nick mumbled and Cristina shook her head

"Like is uncommon to be a doctor's daughter," George said

"No, I mean royal inbred," Cristina said and Nick sighed not focusing on the conversation "Their mother is Ellis Grey," Cristina said and Nick looked at her with a glare

"Shut up, the Ellis Grey?" Izzie asked and Cristina nodded

"Who's Ellis Grey?" George asked in confusion

Both females laughed thinking he wasn't serious but the Cristina saw the confused look on George's face

"The Grey method? Where did you go to med school, Mexico?" Cristina asked and Nick chuckled

"At least he didn't try to suck up when he first heard my last name," Nick said and Cristina punched his arm

"Will you ever forget about it?" Cristina said and Nick shrugged his shoulders

"She was one of the big chick surgeons, she practically invented the abdominal," Izzie said before Cristina took over

"She's a living legend, she won the Harper Avery, twice," Cristina said and Nick scoffed

"Yeah, she would never shut up about that, it got boring after a while," Nick said and Cristina scoffed

"I would kill to be her daughter," Cristina said and Nick laughed

"Oh dear Yang, you don't mean that, heh, so funny," Nick said chuckling and eating his food while laughing at Cristina's comments

Then they saw Meredith heading towards them and sat down at the other edge of the table "Katie Bryce is a pain in the ass, if hadn't taken the Hippocratic oath, I'd Kevorkian her with my bare hands," Meredith said and everyone stared at her in shock "What?" she asked in confusion and anger

"See what I mean?" Nick whispered to Cristina who chuckled and nodded

"Good afternoon interns," Doctor Burke said walking to the intern's table "It's posted already but I thought I shared the good news personally," Burke said looking at the group of interns

"As you know, the honor of performing the first surgery is reserved for the intern that shows the most promise," Burke said with a smirk on his face "As I'm running the OR today, I get to make that choice," He said smirking and looking straight into Nick's eyes before clapping George's back "O'Malley, you'll scrub in for an apicectomy this afternoon, congratulations," Burke said before walking away

"Oh, you're so dead O'Malley," Nick said chuckling as Cristina laughed alongside him

OR sometime later

"Has he pissed his pants yet?" Nick asked taking a seat next to Cristina and offering her a bag of chips

"He's about to start," Cristina said and Nick chuckled

"He is a puppy, I kind of feel sorry about him," Nick said as another intern entered the room

"He's going to faint, he's a fainter," The intern said and another one laughed

"Nah, code brown, right in his pants," The other intern said and the previous intern laughed

"Ten buck says he messes up the McBird," An unknown intern said and Nick snorted

"Twenty says he cries," Another intern said

"Yeah, I'll put twenty on a total meltdown," An intern said laughing at the state of O'Malley

"Fifty says he pulls the whole thing off," Meredith said annoyed and everyone fell quiet and looked at her "That's one of us down there, the first one of us, where's your loyalty?" Meredith asked and Nick couldn't help but snort

"Who are you and what have you done with my sister?" Nick asked and Meredith chuckled "Besides he's too stiff, seventy says he rips the cecum," Nick said leaning on his seat and eating some chips

"I'll take that action," Izzie says smirking and Nick chuckled

And then the interns leaned forward when they saw Burke entering the OR "Okay O'Malley let's see what you can do," Burke said as Nick leaned forward

He ignored all the chatter around him as he focused on what O'Malley was doing and smiled when he saw the young doctor removing the patient's appendix

"Prepare those seventy-bucks Grey," Izzie said and Nick chuckled but didn't offer her a response

"Not bad," Burke said and George smiled under his facemask

"Thank you," George said and Nicked chuckled

"Ah, here comes the high," Nick whispered to Cristina who leaned into him and nodded her head

Then they saw George reaping the cecum just like Nick said he would and Cristina scoffed "And there the low, what a shame," Cristina said and Nick nodded

"Start the suction you idiot," Nick whispered and saw that O'Malley wasn't moving "Oh god he's chocking," Nick said realizing what was happening

Then an annoyed Burke took over and told the nurses to start suction and to get O'Malley out of the OR

"Heh, he's 007," Alex said as he left the room they were

"What a shame," Nick said leaving the room followed closely by Cristina

Empty hallway sometime later

Nick was trying to get some rest as he was laying on a bed with his feet on Cristina's lap, she tried to move his feet multiple times but she ended up giving up

"So, everything in Katie's lab came back clean?" Nick asked Cristina without looking at her

"Yep," Cristina said and Nick frowned

"That's weird," Nick said out loud as he made himself comfortable and tried to get some sleep

"007," George said while sitting in a wheelchair "They're calling me double o seven, aren't they?" He said as Nick sighed and roll to his right side

"Nobody is calling you double o seven," Meredith and Izzie said at the same time but George kept whining

"I was in the elevator and Murphy whispered double o seven," George said and Cristina scoffed and stood up from the bed pushing Nick's legs in the process

"Bitch," Nick grumbled when he felt his sleep being disturbed

"Oh, how many times do we have to go through this George?" Cristina said standing up and walking to the vending machine "Five, ten? Give me a number or else I'm going to hit you," Cristina said

"Hey Cris, can you buy me something?" Nick said and Cristina grumbled but bought him a bag of chips nonetheless

"Murphy whispered 007 and everyone laughed," George said and Nick grumbled

"Stop whining," Nick whispered

"He wasn't talking about you," Izzie said and George looked at her

"You sure?" George asked hopefully

"Would we lie to you?" Meredith asked

"Yes," George said and Nick throw a pillow at his face

"Shut up double o seven and let me sleep," Nick said and Cristina laughed from the vending machine

"007 is a state of mind," Cristina said coming back and plopping herself next to Nick and throwing him a bag of chips

"Thanks, C," Nick whispered and lift himself and leaned on the wall stretching his legs forward

"Say's the girl who finished top of her class, at Stanford," George said and Nick grumbled opening the bag of chips

"By two points," Nick whispered making Cristina chuckle

Then a pager beeped and everyone looked down and everyone looked down to see if it was theirs

"Oh man, it's 911 for Katie Bryce," Meredith said standing up from the bed she was on "I've got to go," Meredith said running away from the area

"Maybe I should've gone into geriatrics, no one minds if you kill an old person," George said and Nick scoffed and offer Cristina some chips

"Surgery is hot, it's the marines, it's macho, it's hostile, it's hardcore," Cristina said taking some chips from Nick "Geriatrics it's for freaks who live with their mother and never have sex," Cristina said and Nick chuckled

"I've got to get my place," George said and Nick leaned back his head while eating the chips

OR preparation room

"Hey Mr. Savitch, how are you? Get enough sleep?" Nick asked as he arrived to see the Savitch couple holding hands

"A little bit, I'm still very nervous," Tony said and Nick smiled

"It's completely normal sir," Nick said as he felt someone stepping next to him

"Hello Mr. Savitch, my intern hasn't given you any problems has he?" Burke said putting a hand on Nick's shoulder

"No, he's been a very respectful doctor," Ms. Savitch said and Burke smiled

"I'm glad," Burke said and then crossed his arms "I'll put you on a bypass machine which pumps blood for your heart, fix your ticker, take you off the machine and I'm done, simple procedure," Burke said as Nick saw George arriving

"So, I shouldn't worry?" Ms. Savitch asked and Burke smiled

"I'm very good at what I do, still it's surgery and there are some risks, I'll see you in the OR this afternoon," Burke said before leaving the area

"You're not going to leave me alone with that guy are you?" Tony asked Nick and he chuckled

"Of course not," Nick said trying to not give much to Tony in case something bad happens as he started to walk out

But not everyone had the same idea because when Tony's wife asked them if she should be worried O'Malley went and did something idiotic

"It's one he's going to sail through. You have nothing to worry about, I promise," George said and Nick's eyes winded as he walked behind O'Malley

He grabbed his arm and pull him into the stairway and glared at his intern colleague

"The fuck was that, George? I promise?" Nick asked in an angry tone "It's a fucking open-heart surgery a lot of things can go wrong, you can't just promise he's going to be alright, even the most minor surgery can go wrong George, this medicine 101," Nick said and George scoffed

"I just comfort a family, don't let you're jealousy slip through Grey," George said leaving Nick on the stairway

"You better hope he doesn't die," Nick whispered as he pinched his nose and walked up the stairs

Meeting room sometime later

"What's wrong with you?" Cristina asked in curiosity as he saw the foul mood Nick was

"Double o seven is an idiot," Nick said and Cristina nodded not asking further questions

"What are you doing?" Meredith asked when she saw Cristina stitching up a banana

"I'm suturing a banana, with the vain hope that it wakes up my brain," Cristina said and George chuckled

"What's so funny double o seven?" Cristina asked sarcastically and O'Malley glared at her "Sorry I get mean when I'm tired," Cristina said and George just shrugged his shoulders

"Doesn't matter, I comforted a family and I get to hang out in the OR, all is good," O'Malley said and Cristina looked at Nick with a raised eyebrow

"He promised the wife's patient that he would be alright," Nick said and Cristina snorted

"What an idiot," Yang said and Nick nodded crossing his arms

"Good morning," Derek said entering the room and then his eyes meet Nick's and he smiled "I'm going to do something rare for a surgeon, I'm going to ask interns for help, I've got this kid Katie Bryce, right now she's a mystery," Derek said as Nick grabbed a chart and started reading it

"She doesn't respond to her meds, labs are clean, scans are pure but she's having seizures," Derek said pacing around the room "She's a ticking time bomb, she's going to die if I don't make a diagnosis, which is where you come in," Derek said and looked at the interns "I can't do it alone, I need your extra minds, your extra eyes, I need you to play detective, I need you to find why Katie is having seizures, I know you're tired, busy and with more work than you can handle so I'm giving an incentive," Derek said and Nick perked up

"Whoever finds the answer rides with me, you get to do what other interns can't scrub in in advance procedure, the clock is ticking guys, and fast, if we're going to save Katie we have to do it soon," Derek said leaving the room

Nick didn't waste any time and left the room with the chart in his hand and went to the root of the problem, the patient herself, he arrived at her room and first decided to talk to the nurse in charge of her

"How is she?" Nick asked and the nurse sighed

"She's fine all things consider, she hasn't had any sleep and at least her seizures stopped for a while," the nurse said and Nick nodded

"Can I speak to her for a moment?" Nick asked and the nurse nodded

Nick walked to the room and knock on the door in politeness even if it was open, "Good morning, Bryce family right?" Nick asked before walking inside the room

"Yes, is there something wrong?" Mr. Bryce asked and Nick shook his head

"No, Mr. Bryce, I'm Doctor Grey, I'm here to ask your daughter a few questions, if that's alright with you," Nick said and the couple of parents looked at each other and nodded "Excellent," Nick said as he walked to stand next to Katie

"You have the same last name as my other doctor," Katie said and Nick nodded

"Yeah, she's my sister, family of doctors," Nick said to the family with a chuckle in his voice, "She told me you were on a beauty pageant," Nick said checking her chart and her vitals

"Yeah, finished top 10 in the last two years, this was my year before this happened," Katie said and Nick nodded

"You know I had a friend who was in a pageant too, finished second in her last year of competition," Nick said as he took a stool and sat next to her

"Really?" Katie asked in excitement

"Yeah, she dressed up like Mary Poppins and won the hearts of the judges, yet she forgot her speech for a moment and that took some points down," Nick said smiling "The fit she threw later, was amazing," Nick said and Katie chuckled "So did you get any sleep yesterday?" Nick asked in concern

"No, only a few hours, and then I wake up with a headache," Katie said and Nick nodded

"Well hospital beds are not comfortable I tell you that," Nick said and the young girl giggled "These headaches, did they start once you got to the hospital or sometime earlier?" Nick asked looking at her eyes

"Nope they started after the first seizure," Katie said and Nick looked at the parents

"According to this you went and got your ankle checked out after you fell in your training?" Nick asked the family and they nodded "Did you hit your head when you fell?" Nick asked trying to cover any ground an idea forming in his head

"Yeah, but she had no concussions signs so they didn't think it was a problem," Mr. Bryce said and Nick nodded

"One last question Katie and then I won't bore you anymore," Nick said and Katie giggled

"It's fine, I like being treated by cute doctors," Katie said and Nick smiled

"Katie!" Ms. Bryce exclaimed

"It's fine ma'am I get it all the time," Nick said and then looked at the young girl "Katie, have you had any other symptoms besides the headaches, like tiredness, numbness, sleepiness?" Nick asked and Katie's eyes lit up

"Actually yeah, last night when I woke up my right arm fell numb, but it lasted a few seconds so I didn't think any of it," Katie said and Nick's eyes winded

"Is everything alright doc?" Mr. Bryce said noticing the look of realization Nick had

"Oh, yeah, it's just that your daughter's case is unique, guess it takes after the person," Nick said ruffling Katie's hair "I'm going to give this to Dr. Shepard, if you need me tell that nurses to page me," Nick said stepping out of the room in deep thought

"Hey," Nick said calling the nurse "Can you page Dr. Shepard, and tell him I think I know what's wrong with Katie," Nick said and the nurse nodded

Nick waited for Dr. Shepard reading the chart over and over again, trying to formulate his hypothesis the best he could

"You page me?" He heard Dr. Shepard speak next to him holding a cup of coffee

"Yeah, what if it's an aneurysm?" Nick asked and that intrigued doctor Shepard

"She doesn't present any indicators," Derek said and Nick nodded

"Yeah, but she told me she was practicing for her beauty pageant and fell," Nick said and presented his notes to Shepard "She didn't present any signs of a concussion so doctors didn't check her head, but what if she burst an aneurysm so small, the symptoms got delayed, it would explain why she started to have seizures and trouble sleeping," Nick said and Derek nodded

"It could be but the chances of a small fall bursting into an aneurysm are one in a million," Derek said and Nick nodded

"Yeah, I know, but then she said she felt her arm go numb, maybe she fell asleep on it but, it could be a sign of the aneurysm," Nick said and Derek put his hands on his waist and started thinking

"How confident are you on this?" Derek asked "No lies, I want honesty," Derek said looking Nick in the eyes

"About seventy percent sure Dr," Nick said and Derek nodded

"The exam to check an aneurysm is expensive and intrusive, so we better be right," Derek said rubbing his face and then looking at the nurse in front of him "Tell them to prepare an aneurysm exam room," Derek said, and then put a hand on Nick's shoulder

"You come with me, it's your theory you get to explain it," Derek said smiling and Nick gulped

Both males walked back into the room and Nick smiled at the family "Doctor Grey back so soon?" Katie asked and Nick smiled

"I missed my favorite pageant too much," Nick said and Katie beamed at him "Mr. and Ms. Bryce, we may have an answer to Katie's problems, we believe that Katie's fall caused an aneurysm to burst on your daughter's brain and we like to make sure of it," Nick said and Katie's father looked at Nick in concern

"What does that mean?" Mr. Bryce asked and before Shepard could answer Nick took over

"It means that one of Katie's blood cells pop off after her fall and she's possibly bleeding inside causing her to seizure," Nick said and he noticed the looked of confusion on Katie's parents "Imagine if a little balloon's filled with blood live in our brains, and the fall caused a balloon to pop, it's rare but it can happen, that's why we would like to get your daughter checked if that's alright with you," Nick said and the parents looked at Derek

"Is it safe?" Mr. Bryce asked and Derek nodded

"It's safe and quick, and Katie won't feel a thing," Derek said and the parents nodded telling them they could perform the exam

"Good, then the nurses will get you ready and we will see you there Katie," Derek said as a group of nurses enter the room Derek and Nick walked out of the room

"You handle yourself well there," Derek said and Nick smiled

"Thanks, doc," Nick said and Derek smiled

"Let's get you a cup of coffee, you'll have to replenish your energy if you want to see this through," Derek said as he directed Nick to a coffee stand

Examine room sometime later

Derek and Nick were standing behind some computers as the machine started pumping liquid into Katie's brain in search of something

"Come on let me be right," Nick mumbled staring at the computer and then he smirked "Hell yeah," Nick said and Derek looked at the computer in surprise

"I'll be damned, it's minor but it's there," Derek said smiling at Nick "You were right, it's a cerebachnoid hemorrhage, she's bleeding into her brain," Derek said and Nick smirked

"Follow me," Derek said and they walked through the hallways of the hospital "Ah Bailey, just the woman I was looking for," Derek said as they ran into Bailey

"Dr. Shepard, is my idiot intern giving you trouble?" Bailey said glaring at Nick who gulped under her glare

"Quite the opposite actually, he figure out what was wrong with Katie, he will scrub in with me, Katie's now his patient," Derek said and Bailey's eyes winded and then nodded

"Okay then, I'll make sure to change the documents," Bailey said and then looked up and down at Nick "Heh," Bailey said before walking away

"That was so scary," Nick said and Derek chuckled

"Let's get something to eat, there I can tell you what I want you to do," Derek said as they walked into a coffee stool and order some bagels and coffee

"So, Katie's surgery will be in the nighttime, so make sure you get some rest, I want you on your top game young apprentice of mine," Derek said smirking and Nick nodded eating his bagel

"Doctor Shepard," Both males heard Cristina speak next to them and they turn to see her and Meredith standing in front of them "I have the answer to Katie's problem," She said and Derek noticed how Meredith was standing quiet

"What is the problem?" Derek asked in curiosity as Nick raised an eyebrow but continue eating in silence

"We think she has an aneurysm, she practices gymnastics and when she fell she popped a blood vessel and she's bleeding on her brain," Cristina said and Meredith looked at Cristina in confusion

"Seems we have a talented bunch this time around," Derek said and Cristina's eyes winded

"You knew already," Cristina said in surprise and Derek nodded

"Yes indeed, Nick here figure it out a few moments ago, but you did great girls, I'll see if there's another surgery in my future for you to join, for this one though is all his," Derek said as he nodded at nick before leaving the area

"Dude really? How did you figure it out?" Cristina asked and Nick looked at her finishing his bagel

"She told me her arm fell asleep, and I took a shot in the dark and I was right," Nick said and looked at both girls "You're not mad at me, are you?" Nick asked in concern Cristina scoffed and Meredith shook her head

"More like super jealous," Cristina said and Nick chuckled

"Then I won't feel bad saying this, I'm leaving you behind Yang, better catch up," Nick said smirking as Cristina grumbled

"This isn't over Nick," Cristina said as the young Grey laughed heading to Tony's surgery

OR sometime later

"Hey Doctor Grey," Tony said and Nick smiled as he walked to his patient "You came," Tony said

"I told you I'd be here, how are you feeling?" Nick asked in concern and Tony smiled

"Pretty nervous actually," Tony said and Nick smiled

"How about I tell you a story, to take your mind off the surgery," Nick said and Tony nodded "My full name is Nicholas Grey," Nick said smiling at the patient in the bed "But when I was a child my sister used to call me Klaus, mother always was a sucker for German names, so one time my buddies in school found out about my nickname and I made sure they didn't use it, only my sister could," Nick said and Tony chuckled

"How did you make sure?" Tony asked and Nick smirked

"With my fists obviously," Nick said and Tony laughed out loud as the anesthesiologist came around "They did stop but I got detention and my mother's anger, so it wasn't all that worthy," Nick said and Tony chuckled

"Thanks, doc, I feel much better," Tony said and Nick smiled and walked away from the area and enter the washing area where Burke was, and started watching how they put Tony to sleep

"I saw that back there, nice job making the patient feel safe," Burk said while washing his hands

"Thanks, doctor," Nick said and Burke nodded

"Where's O'Malley?" Burke asked and Nick shrugged his shoulders

"Don't know sir, haven't seen him since Dr. Shepard's meeting," Nick said and Burke sighed

"Wash your hands, your having a front-row seat on the procedure, be prepared, I'll be quizzing you," Burke said entering the OR

Nick started washing his hands with purpose and making sure they were completely clean before entering the OR

Nick heard the door opening and saw O'Malley entering the room "You're late double o seven," Nick said and O'Malley glared at him but said nothing

"What are you doing?" George asked and Nick looked at him with a raised eyebrow "I thought we were hanging here until Burke finished," George said and Nick shrugged his shoulders

"Burke told me to join him, who am I to question his methods?" Nick said drying his hands and entering the OR

A pack of nurses put a coat on him and some globes as he stood behind Dr, Burke "I see Dr. O'Malley decided to grace us with his presence," Burke said and Nick nodded "Okay people let's begin," Burke said

"Dr. Grey, do you know how to do a bypass surgery?" Burke asked and Nick nodded

"Yes sir, I read it in medical school," Nick said and Burke nodded

"Okay then let's put your mind to the test, I want you to explain everything step by step," Burke said and Nick nodded

"You start by making an incision on the middle of the patient's chest about 8 to 10 inches," Nick said as Burke started the procedure "Then you cut through the breast bones to expose the heart and get a better view of the situation, in this case, it's the blocked artery," Nick said as he saw Burke doing all the actions

"Then you connect the patient's lungs to the bypass to drain the heart of blood so you can work without risk of bleeding, and the bypass also makes sure that the blood flow continues working perfectly," Nick said

"Then you use another vein or artery, in this case, an artery to create a new path for the blood to flow instead of the blocked artery," Nick said Burke did that and before Nick could continue talking Tony's vitals dropped at a rapid rate

"Shit, he's dropping on us," Burke said as he started giving orders to the nurses and started taking the medical stuff out of Tony's chest "Dr. Grey, tell me why he's crashing?" Burke said and Nick took a moment before steeling his nerves and answering the attending

"His heart is weak sir, it couldn't handle the stress of open-heart surgery, our best hope is to stabilize him and close him up, bypass is a no-go if he survives," Nick said and Burke internally smiled before starting a code blue on Tony's heart

Burke grabbed the revival electric pads and placed them on Tony's heart as he tried to revive Tony and Nick knew that the patient wasn't coming back, he didn't know where that feeling was coming from but he just knew

So when Burke declared the time of death he let out a sigh in defeat and slump his shoulders "Everything alright Doctor Grey?" Burke asked and Nick looked at Burke

"Yeah, it's just that, he's the first patient that died on me," Nick said and Burke nodded in understanding

He placed a hand on Nick's shoulder and spoke some words to him "This is the worst part of the game, they don't actually prepare you for this in med school, take a few moments to bring yourself back up and move forward so it doesn't happen again," Burke said and Nick nodded following the attendant out of the OR

He took his coat and his gloves out and throw them into the container while taking his facemask off, he rubbed his face in tiredness and listen to the conversation Burke and O'Malley were having

"Wow that was quick," O'Malley said in surprise and Burke sighed

"His heart had too much damage for a bypass, had to let him go," Burke said sighing and Nick noticed the look of shock on O'Malley's face "It happens, rarely but it does happen," Burke said and Nick leaned on the wall in defeat

"But I, I told his wife that he would be fine," O'Malley said not believing what had happened and Nick sighed "I promised her," He said and Burke looked at him in anger

"You what?" Burke said and Nick pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance "Who the hell are you to promise anything on- this is my case. Did you hear me promise?" Burke said and then turned to Nick "Did you know about this?" He asked and Nick nodded

"Yeah, heard him say it, told him he was an idiot," Nick said and Burke grumbled

"At least one of you has fucking common sense," Burke said and then glared at George

"The only one that can make a promise like that is God, and I haven't seen him holding a scalpel lately," Burke said punching the bar in front of him in annoyance "You never a patient's family a good outcome!" Burke said and O'Malley stood there dumbfounded

"I-I thought," George try to say but Burke wasn't having any of it

"You're important enough to make that promise? You get to tell Ms. Savitch that she's a widow," Burke said walking away from the OR

"May you find peace in the afterlife, Tony," Nick whispered as he walked out of the OR without saying a word to George

Empty hallway sometime later

Nick had taken some time alone in an empty hallway to gather himself and then decided to walk to Katie's room but then he bumped into a familiar person

"Ah Chief Webber, sorry about that my mind was someplace else," Nick said apologizing for the bump

"Fine way to meet your boss don't you think so Dr. Grey?" Webber said chuckling and Nick smiled

"Well, actually we already met, although I was too young to actually have a conversation with you," Nick said smiling and Dr. Webber's eyes winded

"You remember those times?" Webber asked in curiosity and Nick nodded

"Hyperthymesia, I remember every single moment of my life, so, of course, I remember you," Nick said smiling and Webber nodded his head

"That's good, you have become a great man, I still remember changing your diapers," Webber said and Nick chuckled

"Not sure if that's how I want my boss to remember me," Nick said chuckling and Dr. Webber looked at him in sympathy

"I heard about Mr. Savitch, how are you holding up?" Webber asked and Nick sighed

"I'll be fine, there was nothing we could do for him, I just feel sorry for his wife," Nick said and Webber put a hand on Nick's shoulder

"A lot of people die, it's part of the job, it's not easy, it shouldn't be, but we have to push through, if we falter then our patient's confidence in us will break, and we don't want that," Webber said and Nick nodded

"Thanks, Chief," Nick said and then looked at his watch "Ah, I'm sorry chief, I promised Katie I check on her before her surgery," Nick said and Webber nodded

"Then I'll leave you be, good luck Dr. Grey," Webber said walking away

Nick looked back and when Webber disappeared he frowned and started rubbing his hands in anxiety and tapping his foot on the floor

He sighed and walked away, trying to make his memories go back, he arrived at Katie's room and sighed before walking in

"Doctor Grey!" Katie said and Nick smiled

"Hey Katie, where are your parents?" Nick asked as he grabbed a chair and took a sit next to her

"They went to get some food," Katie said and Nick nodded "Doctor you have to stop them!" Katie said and Nick looked at her in confusion

"Stop them from doing what?" Nick asked in curiosity

"They're making me bald, I will lose all my chances at the pageant," Katie said and Nick chuckled "It's not funny!" Katie said and Nick put his hands up

"I know, I know, but Katie, you know you're going to win the next one, right?" Nick said and Katie looked at him in confusion "You're an underdog Katie, you will beat this and then you have to tell people, especially those pageants judges, how you kicked the aneurysm's ass and rose like a phoenix," Nick said and Katie beamed

"Katie the phoenix, I like it," Katie said and then a group of nurses enter the room "I guess its time isn't it?" Katie said and then looked at Nick with pleading eyes "Can you stay with me?" She asked with a slight fear in her voice and Nick nodded

"Of course, kiddo, I'm not going anywhere," Nick said and then Katie's parents came in into the room

"Is it time?" Katie's father asked and Nick nodded

"We're taking Katie to the preparation room and then we will start the surgery, do you need a moment before we go?" Nick asked and the parents nodded

"That would be great thanks," Katie's mother said and both parents walked to where their daughter was

Nick gave them a moment to say goodbye before the couple walked out of the room and Nick nodded at them

Nick walked back to Katie's bed and looked at her with a smile on his face "You ready?" Nick asked and Katie nodded as the nurses started to move the bed toward the preparation room

Nick walked alongside Katie in silence as they made their way to the preparation room

They made it there and they moved Katie to another bed "So Katie, want me to explain what it's going to happen?" Nick asked and Katie nodded

"An anesthesiologist will come here and put you to sleep, and then we will prepare you for the surgery making sure everything is alright, once we're done we will take you into surgery where Dr. Shepard will go into your brain and put a sort of band-aid on where your brain is leaking, simple and nothing to worry about," Nick said holding Katie's hand

"And you'll be there?" Katie asked in slight fear

"He will, he will be by your side all the way Katie," Derek said entering the room and smiling at the young girl "How are you, Katie?" Derek asked as the young girl smiled at him

"Nervous," She said and Derek nodded

"It's perfectly normal, but I am good at what I do, and we will make sure you get better," Derek said and Katie nodded "Dr. Grey a moment," Derek said stepping out of the room

"I'll be right back," Nick said and stepped out of the room

"How are you feeling? Nervous? Excited?" Derek asked with a smile on his face

"Actually, I feel very calm, don't know why, but I feel at peace, is that weird?" Nick asked in confusion and Derek chuckled

"Not really, I feel like that every time I go into surgery unless it's a difficult case, it means your head is clearing and making space for new knowledge, it must be heard living with hyperthymesia," Derek said and Nick looked at him in surprise

"How did you?" Nick asked in shock and Derek smiled

"I'm a neurosurgeon, I noticed the signs, when we first met, your brain analyzed me, it was fascinating to see it work," Derek said and Nick chuckled nervously

"Sorry about that, I tend to keep it down most of the time," Nick said and Derek smiled

"Don't, we have to use everything to our advantage," Derek said and Nick nodded

"It's that why you wanted me to be your apprentice?" Nick asked and Derek nodded

"Yes, you have a great mind, I just have to mold your hands, there's a severe lack of good neurosurgeons, I intend to fix that," Derek said and Nick chuckled

"Fair enough, as I told you, you'll just have to be convincing enough," Nick said and Derek chuckled and looked back

"Katie seems to like you, you get to shave her head," Derek said and Nick nodded "Can I ask you a question?" Derek asked and Nick nodded "How can I get your sister to date me?" Derek asked and Nick snorted

"Yeah, I'm not getting in the middle of that Dr. I tried once, didn't end up well for me," Nick said and Derek sighed

"Yeah, I expected as much, not easy being the big brother is it?" Derek said and Nick laughed

"Not it is not," Nick said with a smirk on his face "I should go shave Katie's head, meet you in the OR sex doctor," Nick said cheekily and Derek's eyes winded and laughed a little

OR sometime later

Nick had cleaned his hands and the nurses put the uniform on him as he waited for Dr. Shepard to come in

"Alright everybody, it's a beautiful night to save lives," Derek said entering the room as the nurses put his uniform on "Let's have some fun," He said stepping towards Katie and started cutting her head

Later Nick would describe that experience as riding a roller coaster, it was different than Tony's surgery, he felt high and at peace watching Shepard working on Katie

Derek looked at Nick and smiled nodding him to come forward, Nick step up and position himself in front of Derek

He looked at the microscope and saw Katie's brain in all its glory "See here," Derek said pointing at a part of Katie's brain with his medical tool "This is where the aneurysm is, pay close attention to how I clip it," Derek said and Nick saw Derek doing that

Nick smiled under his facemask as he got to see Derek working on the brain and it felt good, Nick picture himself doing that in the future and he couldn't wait for it

He knew one of the reasons he decided to be a doctor was to piss off his mom, but this was the main reason, the rush he felt right there and there

The surgery finished without complications and Derek and Nick walked out of the OR side by side

"That was so freaking awesome, ah I'm so sorry I shouldn't be like this, but hell that was something else," Nick said in excitement

"I know," Derek said as he check Katie's chart

"I have to say, as far as convincing arguments go, that was one hell of a convincing one," Nick said, Derek smirked and the young adult looked at his watch "Huh, my shift is ending, okay I'm going to do something and you have to swear to me that you won't tell Meredith," Nick said and Derek looked at him with a raised eyebrow

"Actions, not words," Nick said and Derek looked at him in confusion "If you want to date my sister, that's the approach you need to take, actions not words, we don't trust people easily let alone invite someone in, so you'll have to prove it to her that you want her," Nick said and Derek smiled

"Ok then, thanks for that," Derek said smiling at the young adult "And don't worry, I'll make a neurosurgeon out of you yet," Derek said walking away

Nick looked at where Derek with a smile on his face as he felt so excited, instead of his gloomy self when he got back to Seattle

He felt at home, and he felt proud of himself, and he most definitely knew that he would prove his mother wrong
