New Case

He had known that this guy would be his death someday! It had been clear to him from the start! This crazy guy with the crazy driving style and the thousands of cargo pants! First he forced him to do this job and said they could work well together.

However, now, because of this guy, he was in this damn situation. He might never see his daughter again now, or the rest of his family or his friends. At that moment, he really hated his partner. He could have just listened to him for once! Because if he had, this certainly wouldn't have happened.

Suddenly he heard noises. A faint shaking, as if from stones. Then a soft cough. Something was moving, or had he misheard? It was just too dark to see anything. Then he heard someone calling. "Danny?!... Danny?!... Hey, Danny?!"

A few hours before:

Steve was happy. He had just completed the one week reserve training. Finally he could go home again. He had even come home a day earlier than planned. So he now wanted to surprise his ohana and had accepted a taxi for that.

When Steve got home and opened the door, a cloud of smoke suddenly hit him. He quickly ran to the kitchen, from which the smoke seemed to be coming. What he saw surprised him.

"Danny, what the hell are you doing here?"

"Steve. I thought you wouldn't come back until tomorrow."

"Well, I was able to come back a day early. But back to my question. What are you doing here ?"

While Danny searched for the right words, Steve opened the kitchen window to get rid of the smoke.

"I just tried a new recipe. And well, it didn't go well."

"I see. Listen, when I let you stay with me after you had water damage in your house, I certainly didn't agree to this. Besides, it should have been repaired by now, if I'm not mistaken."

"No, it's not repaired yet. I got a call yesterday. It will probably take another day or two."

"All right. Of course you can stay here as long as you like, but you'll tidy up my kitchen so that it doesn't look like a battlefield. And secondly, you'll never try recipes in my kitchen again. Are we clear ?"

"Yes, sure. But tell me, how was your vacation?"

"First of all, it wasn't vacation, it was reservist training. And secondly, it was good to have some distraction and do something different. Do you have a case right now?"

"No. We had one while you were gone, but nothing major. It was completed within two days. As you can see, we're perfectly capable of solving a case even if none of the McGarretts are there."

"Be honest, you missed me."

"No, not a minute. In fact, no one was shot, blown up, or kidnapped while you were away. Why is that, Steven?"

Danny didn't omit to support his statements by gesturing wildly. Steve, however, had to admit that this "danger magnet stuff" was getting on his nerves, but that he somehow missed these arguments with Danny.

"You still think I'm a danger magnet?"

"Of course I do and my opinion will not change! It just confirms itself more and more."

"Sure. And now better clean up here before I throw you out of my house."

At that moment, Danny's cell phone rang. "Williams?... Okay, I'll be right there."

"What's up ?"

"A body was found on Waikiki Beach. What did I just say about you, the danger magnet?"

"It's not my fault. And I'm going there and you won't come until you've cleaned up my kitchen."

"Seriously now ?"

"What do you think? So see you later."

Before Danny could really protest, Steve was out the door. He quickly got into his car and made his way to where the body was found.

Once there, Steve received surprised looks from his colleagues.

"To answer your questions, I got home a day earlier than planned."

Of course, Kono and Chin were happy and greeted their boss. And Lou couldn't help but smile, since he already had an inkling as to why Steve was here alone.

"And where is Danny, if I may ask? Did you guys had a fight like always?"

"No not really, but I made it clear to him that before he came over here, he should get my kitchen in order."

"What did he do?"

"He's more than welcome to tell you that himself. Now we have a body here, so let's focus on that."

Steve then turned to Max, who was kneeling next to the body.

"So Max, what can you tell us?"

"The COD, as you can see for yourself, was the shot in the chest. I would guess the heart was hit, after which he died instantly. Also, he doesn't show any defensive injuries, which suggests it was surprising and unexpected."

"Okay, do we already know who he is?"

"Yes. We were able to identify him as Samuel Carpenter, 34, who appears to have been a teacher."

"Thanks, Max. Then we'll have a look at his house and hope we can find something."

On the way to Samuel Carpenter's house, Steve notified Danny, who also set off. Both arrived at the house at about the same time and went in together. Steve went ahead and inside they searched the rooms. As Steve was walking up the stairs, he suddenly heard voices. Carefully and as quietly as possible, he worked his way through the rooms. He stopped in front of one, the door was ajar and he stormed in.

"Five-0! Hands where I can see them !"

Steve only saw a radio, which was standing on a shelf and the voices seemed to be coming from it. Suddenly he was pushed from behind and stumbled forward a bit, dropping the gun. When he turned around, the person was already out the door and running away. Steve quickly picked up his gun again and ran after the person. The person in front of him ran down the stairs and probably wanted to go outside, but she didn't get very far because Danny was downstairs and stopped her. He quickly stepped in front of her before she reached the outside door.

"Hey, hands up, don't move!"

The person was a woman. She was probably around 30, had brown, shoulder-length hair and brown eyes. She was wearing black jeans and a white top.

Then Steve came to them and handcuffed the woman.

"Did your reserve training make you tired or why were you so slow down here?"

"No, I'm not tired. Our friend here just has more power than meets the eye. Book her, Danno."

Danny complied and only gave Steve a shake of the head in response. After all these years, he was still calling him like that.

Once at headquarters, Danny brought the woman into the interrogation room. Steve didn't follow, but pulled out his phone and texted Catherine that he was back today and how she was doing. She was on the mainland, visiting her family and would come back sometime in the next few days.

So Steve went to Danny and the woman in the interrogation room. Danny hasn't questioned her yet, so Steve could do that.

"Well, let's start very simply. Who are you and what were you doing in the house?"

The woman made no sign of speaking to either of them. But that didn't matter when Chin came in the door and asked the two to go outside again.

"We checked her out. Her name is Laura Carpenter. She is probably Samuel's wife and not a blank slate. Has been involved in several drug offenses and the HPD is currently searching the house. They haven't even started yet and they've already found a bunch of different drugs."

"Okay, thanks Chin. Good work."

Steve and Danny re-entered the room and Steve spoke to Laura.

"Well, Laura. We know that you are married to Samuel Carpenter. Or rather were. Because he's dead. His body was found this morning, washed up on the beach. Would you like to tell us something about that?"

"Samuel is dead? But how… do you know who did it?"

"No, we're trying to find out. So do you know where he's been in the last 24 hours or who he might have had a fight with?"

"Listen, all I know is that he had an appointment on business and that's why he went away last night. I don't know where he went or who he met. And I'm not aware that he's had a fight with anyone."

"And by business you mean something in the drug business, right?"

"Yes. He worked in this field. But I had absolutely nothing to do with it."

"First of all, we don't buy it, and secondly, your house is being searched and drugs have already been found. And if your fingerprints are somewhere on it, you can spend a few years in prison."

Then Steve and Danny left the room. So they had to investigate in the drug business. And Steve already had an idea of who to ask for help...
