Summary: Kagome was a bizarre creature. Though she's a ghoul, it's a fact she's been unaware of for most of her life. As a miko, the two traits shouldn't even mix. At 15, she crossed paths with Uta who ended up taking her under his wing following the tragedy of losing her family. Four years later, it seems things will only unravel due to Kaneki's appearance.

Pairing: Undecided.

Disclaimer: I do not own either series. Each belongs to their rightful owners.

Prologue

The table she sat at was suitable for two, but the other side was left unoccupied. It was quiet as she glanced up. The figure she was waiting for stood with his back facing her as he busied himself with making coffee.

She was nineteen today, but she didn't feel any different, admittedly. As it was, she wasn't even sure if she was supposed to feel different. She felt the same as she always did.

Her birthday often always ended up marking other more momentous moments in her life, after all. It was no longer her birthday, it felt like, and more or less a mark of remembrance for the event that fell on the date.

She drew into herself some, tucking her hand beneath her chin as she shifted her attention down to the table. Blue eyes clouded over some as she fell deep into thought.

She was an outlier, and, perhaps, she'd always be one.

How was she both a miko and ghoul at the same time? How could two opposing genes coincide in one single body long enough for her to live as she did? While her spiritual energy did seem to have some effect on her body, it still didn't harm her any as it should have. It didn't make sense to her- let alone anyone else who she met. That included the man she lived with.

He was a ghoul- something her friends from school always feared. She could recall the day she met him with clarity. It was the same day she learned the truth- that she wasn't as human as she'd once thought.

The sky above was gloomy as she walked through the streets. It'd been a month since she came home for good, but, more so, it'd been two weeks since the accident that claimed the lives of her family. She'd made herself leave the shrine in hopes it'd help lift her dampened spirits, but it didn't seem to be doing much. Her friends had encouraged her, but it hadn't gone as they seemed to hope.

The cafe she'd left a while back was quickly turning into a distant memory. The food had made her ill, and, so, she split from her friends to head back home.

It wasn't just the food there that had that effect on her. No matter what she tried to eat, none of it could be kept down. Something was off with its taste. She'd never had the issue when her mother prepared her food, and, so, she told herself that she just missed the touch of her mother.

When rain suddenly started downpouring from the sky, she cursed her rotten luck. She quickly searched for shelter. Most buildings were closed off, but she darted into the first one that appeared open. A bell chimed as she entered, and she gave a sigh of relief.

At least she was out of the rain.

She stood by the door for a moment or two, letting her gaze sweep over the shop she'd stepped into. She felt intrigued spike when she realized it was a mask store. Unable to stop herself, she walked further in, letting her attention roam over the masks on display. The style was unique- to say the least. She didn't doubt that her friends would tug her to the door the moment they saw it, but Kagome was fascinated.

Wrapped up in her observation of the dozens of masks, Kagome was unaware of the figure that soon stepped into the room with her. A few seconds passed, and she eventually felt the pressure of a stare on her, and she stood up straight, turning to glance over her shoulder. She quickly figured he must be the owner of the shop.

He had a sidecut, with the rest of his dark hair pulled back in a ponytail. Even from the distance, she could easily spot the assortment of piercings and tattoos that decorated his exposed skin.

"Hello," he greeted her. It was quiet as the rain picked up even harder. A rumble of thunder could be heard, and Kagome gave a wry smile.

"Hi," she responded. "Sorry," she said a second later. "I got caught in the rain."

He shook his head, offering a small smile as he came to join her. "It's quite all right," he said.

"So… did you make all of these?" she asked, motioning to the large array of masks. He nodded. "They look so cool," she said then, turning away from them and back to him as he stopped beside her. When she did, she was quick to focus on the strange coloration in his eyes. Furthermore, there was something to his aura that she was able to pick up on due to the newly close proximity he had to her.

He wasn't human.

In hindsight, she probably should've been able to feel it a lot sooner than she did, so she only had herself to blame for even ending up in such a situation. The conversation that followed, however, was one that ended up altering her life entirely. For the better, or for the worse, she still wasn't quite sure.

"Y-You're not going to try and eat me?"

She didn't miss the way his expression shifted a fraction at the notion. He stepped closer, and she recoiled slightly out of fear as he sniffed her. A few seconds later, he pulled back and met her stare.

"You do smell nice, but not exactly appetizing," he remarked. "You sure ask questions like a human does."

Kagome's relief was fleeting when his words fully sank in. A small frown appeared on her face as she tilted her head to the side. "... like a human?"

He looked at her again, this time more curiously than before. Her wide-eyed stare was painfully full of innocence.

"But… I am a human," she continued softly. Her comment caught his attention swiftly and he met her gaze head-on. He could hear her heart racing. She seemed to genuinely believe her own claim.

He sniffed a second time. Though faint, it was clear in her scent. There was no denying it.

"You really didn't know?" he asked after a few long seconds. She was silent in response. Her thoughts burned through her mind, but no words would form as she stood there.

Suddenly, piece by piece, it'd begun to make sense. More so, her inability to swallow anything she tried to feed herself following the absence of her mother. She'd assumed it was due to the grief of losing the entirety of her family so abruptly, but it didn't seem to be the case.

"You're far from a normal ghoul," he remarked. His voice easily cut through her thoughts, and she looked up at him once more. "I'm curious as to why your spiritual energy hasn't destroyed that part of you. I didn't think someone like you was capable of existing."

His comments gave her new questions that she didn't know the answer to. The more she dwelled on them, the less and less she could understand. Before she could find the words to say, her stomach broke the silence with a loud growl. She was too appalled to be embarrassed.

It certainly didn't get any better when he left and returned not even a full minute later with a dish of eyeballs. Instead of feeling nauseous like she expected when he offered for her to take one, she felt famished.

Eating it didn't feel as sickening as she anticipated. Unlike everything else, it actually tasted palatable. So much so that she accepted another when he told her to eat what she wanted.

A hand landed on the space of her jaw, fingers curling beneath her chin. She was stunned out of her dazing just as a second hand came up and brushed her dark hair back over her shoulder, nimble fingers trailing through them in an affectionate pet.

Though it had been sudden, she didn't react when her head was tilted back. Nor did she react when the figure behind her dropped their head down to rest it against her own, pressing his forehead gently to her own. Strands of dark hair tickled her skin faintly seconds later when he moved, picking his head up just enough to gaze down at her, red eyes catching vibrant blue. In the silence that followed, a smile rose to grace her appearance.

"You're awfully quiet," he remarked in a thoughtful tone. He didn't release her as he gazed down at her. He analyzed her face closely, the hand that was intertwined within her hair still combing through her long locks. His other hand moved only slightly, just enough for him to move his thumb up to the corner of her mouth, where he then tugged at her smile.

Kagome gave a hum as she let her eyes flutter closed, dark lashes resting against porcelain skin. It was quiet for a little bit longer before she let out a soft sigh. "I was just thinking," she responded after a long pause on her end. She could feel the pique of curiosity in his aura as they stayed like that. "About stuff, is all," she supplied shortly after, her smile faltering.

"Oh." His voice sounded exactly the same as it had minutes ago. Before Kagome could say anything else, she once more felt as he pressed his head to her own. A small smile was quick to reclaim her lips as he stayed like that for longer this time. When he pulled back finally, he pressed his lips to the same spot in a subtle touch.

He went back to the task that'd been occupying his attention minutes ago, and Kagome heard the clanking of glass. Not long after the noise faded did he return, setting a cup of coffee in front of her before taking his place on the other side of the table. "Thanks, Uta," Kagome smiled much brighter than before when he finally joined her.

"I could take you to visit the shrine today," he offered off-handedly. Though the idea sounded nice, Kagome shook her head, glancing down at the cup in front of her. When she thought of that place, her family was never to be found. Memories of the well plagued it all, just like a curse.

"Maybe it's best if I don't go," she responded, voice straying to a whisper. "I just…" she paused with a sigh, giving a gentle shake of her head. "Memories, I suppose," she mused softly.

He rested his cheek on his hand as he watched her silently. Kagome shook her head again, lifting her gaze with a smile fixed back in place. It was transparent, though. He could see through it. It was always so easy to see through her false ones. Still, he wouldn't push against her wishes. "If you're certain," he remarked eventually.

"I'm positive," she responded, but it felt like she was trying to convince herself more of that than him. Maybe she was, but she didn't stop to entertain the idea that presented itself in her mind. "I shouldn't wallow in gloom today, anyway," she added.

He gave a hum in response, nodding slightly. Kagome beamed at him.

After all, it was her nineteenth birthday today. She couldn't bear having to return to that place where the well resided.

Auroua-chan: This has been flittering in my brain for a while. I'm so glad this chapter is ready to go up.

So, Kagome is rather unique. Not only is she a miko, but a ghoul as well. Not just that, but she also didn't know she was a ghoul, so it seems that Mama Higurashi was aware and hid it from her (while also going to the lengths of making sure she was fed what she needed to survive.) It's not clear right now whether or not the rest of the Higurashi family were ghouls or not.

The pairing is undecided, and suggestions are more than welcome. Kagome is currently 19 and lives with Uta. More on their relationship will come, but he cares about her a lot and he protects her.

Anyway, that's it for now! Thank you all for reading and I hope you all enjoyed. Hopefully I caught all the errors before posting, but if not sorry.

Bye for now~
