Kaladin got directions from Bozia to the Yiga hideout. Needless to say, he was concerned once he heard that Kaladin was going there, but wasn't willing to get involved or explain much more about them then,"They're dangerous and you're crazy."
But Kaladin needed information. Fighting foes blind was just plain stupid. So he walked around the side of Gerudo Town again and called out to Zelda. He hadn't thought to try to reach her before, but then again, he hadn't needed to. Hopefully she could hear him.
"Hey, Zelda? Who are the Yiga?" he called out.
"Oh, Kaladin. Why do you need to know?"
He quickly explained why he had to find the Yiga, while Zelda made affirmative noises. She also sounded kind of nervous.
"Leave it to the Gerudo to assign a man some impossible task. They aren't usually sexist, but they always get defensive when it comes to running their land. The Yiga are bad people, Kaladin. I'm not sure you should go. Instead I'll help you sneak onto Vah Naboris on your own."
"Zelda, from a hundred miles away via a telepathic link? I know you mean well, but I have to go." He really didn't want to make her feel more guilty, but he needed to understand a few things before he attacked the Yiga base. So he said,"And to survive it, I need to know who the Yiga are, and anything you know about their security."
Zelda thought for a moment. She was disappointed when she finally said,"They're a faction of the Sheikah who want to bring Ganon back to life. Obviously, they succeeded, though I'm not sure how much they really were involved with Ganon's return. They've been a plague to Hyrule for hundreds of years and the Gerudo have been fighting them off for centuries, but they always return. Their warriors are nearly impossible to kill, and nobody knows why. The hideout is a maze of corridors. I heard about a raid that the Gerudo attempted once. Very few survived. Even Link struggled to fight them off if some attacked." Zelda's voice was getting softer, though Kaladin couldn't tell if that was from the connection, or something else.
"I'm no stranger to battle. I have to go" His voice sounded weak, even to his own ears. Putting on a bit of bravado, he added,"I'll sneak in. I won't engage anyone directly, and I can teleport anyway. It will be okay. Besides, I've already fought one off."
Zelda spoke barely at a whisper as she said,"Very well then. I won't change your mind, and I couldn't stop you anyway. Be careful out there." He could just barely make out her saying,"Don't leave me alone in here," before the connection cut out.
Kaladin walked into the mouth of the canyon that hid the Yiga hideout, after a long hike in the desert. Two Yiga, dressed similarly to the one he'd fought in Kakariko, but holding bows, appeared out of thin air. They shot a few arrows at Kaladin, who lashed them away, and disappeared again. Kaladin thought that was it, but the same Yiga appeared again and fired at Kaladin. They certainly weren't ordinary foes.
A short but hard battle later, Kaladin had dispatched the Yiga. They had disappeared in smoke after he hit them a few times. He wasn't sure if they were dead or even injured. He was lucky that the fight didn't draw reinforcements but hurried anyway. He didn't know if somebody would come looking for them now or later, but he didn't want to risk another fight.
Kaladin stepped into the base proper, and after a long, stone hallway, found a captured Gerudo woman.
"Hey! What are you doing here? It's not safe," she said.
Kaladin said,"I've come to get back the thunder helm."
"Your life has got to be worth more than that trinket. Many of my friends have died trying to find that thing. Whoever you are, your life can't be worth the helm."
Kaladin didn't have time to argue. Maybe if he hurried he could help the woman escape without a fight. He started to examine the lock on the cell door. If he was careful, he could probably push and pull the pins inside with cohesion and lashings.
Syl started to stare at the woman. "Your name is Barta, right?" Syl was clearly showing herself to the women, and while she was startled, didn't seem to think much of Syl's appearance.
The woman looked a little bit surprised at the mention of her name, but nodded.
"I overheard some guards talking about you on my way out of Gerudo town. Everybody is worried sick, though nobody knows where you went."
"I thought I could find the helm on my own. I thought 'They're only Yiga." She spat. "I was caught by a blademaster. I was lucky that he showed mercy for some twisted reason. Don't underestimate the tribe. You really are intent on doing this?"
"I have to help," Kaladin said. He could feel the pins inside the lock, and shifted them around. He could tell he was getting close.
"Fine, then let me tell you a few things. I've learned a little, sitting here for days in their base. The Yiga love bananas and are easily distracted by them. Also they really don't know how to set up a perimeter so it should be easy to sneak around them. Finally, whatever you do, whoever you think you are, don't pick a fight with one. Yiga blademasters are well…masters with the sword. And you can almost never fight just one at a time. It's how I was caught. Be careful out there."
The door to the cell swung open. "You know, I just took out the patrol outside. I bet you could sneak quickly before they send somebody outside."
"I never thought that I was going to get out of here." Barta was suddenly on the verge of tears. "I owe you a great debt. Thank you."
Kaladin sent Syl to scout ahead, and she confirmed that outside the Yiga patrol hadn't been replaced. Berta walked out, but not before thanking Kaladin profusely some more. He felt awkward, but accepted the praise. It seemed like Barta was often left behind.
A few minutes later, after sneaking around a few Yiga guards, Kaladin was in the complex proper, sitting on a rafter, overlooking guards patrolling below. Their patterns didn't make any sense, and Kaladin wasn't really sure what they were guarding since entering their hideout was asking for trouble. Syl had flown off to see if she could figure out where the helm was guarded. She came back not two minutes later.
Syl said,"Guess what I found."
"An invisibility cloak?" Kaladin asked, jokingly. What he wouldn't give for one right now.
"No. Do they exist? Actually, how would you find an invisibility cloak? Wouldn't it be invisible?"
"What did you find?"
"You'll just have to follow me."
It was just like Syl to come rushing back from somewhere and then refuse to tell him what was going on. Syl guided Kaladin to a small room, only accessible by a ladder.
"It's like a shrine to bananas." Sitting in front of Kaladin was a dais full of the fruit. What on Roshar could they possibly do with that many bananas? "Barta wasn't joking."
"I wonder how many bananas they eat in a week?" Syl mused.
Kaladin and Syl exited the strange sight, and with a little bit of stormlight, snuck along the rafters and managed to enter another room with no problems. They found a secret door pretty quickly, behind some practice equipment and a tapestry, and walked out.
