When Kaladin woke up again, he was sitting against a tree a little ways away from where he was before. Nothing hurt anymore, and he didn't feel dizzy, just tired. Beast Ganon loomed large over Hyrule field. Sidon was standing nearby, holding a trident awkwardly in his hand, like he didn't know how to use it.
"You're alive! Of course." Sidon smiled his brilliant smile. "It looked close there for a moment, but I used Mipha's gift, and you mended quickly." He nodded over to Beast Ganon. "I think Ganon is almost defeated. I would be over there of course, but I'm not a fighter…The trident is mostly for show. Look."
Kaladin could make out four figures surrounding Beast Ganon swiping at his legs to various effects. A pink-haired girl was darting around poking at him, while a Goron wearing a blue scarf swung a club. Ganon stumbled. It took a second for Kaladin to realize that they were Riju and Yunobo. The third figure had long blond hair and what appeared to be the master sword. The fourth must have been Teba, and he was flying around firing golden arrows at points of light on the beast's side, occasionally boosting himself upwards in a burst of wind. Suddenly Ganon breathed a blast of purple flame, and all the heroes scattered. A throbbing mass of eyes opened on Beast Ganon's forehead, and Teba let loose a dozen arrows at it. Kaladin and Sidon turned away as there was a brilliant burst of golden light. After the flash had subsided, Beast Ganon was completely gone. The four heroes alone remained in the field. They walked over to Kaladin.
Soon he was lost in a sea of competing voices, some concerned about his health and some talking about the battle. A blond woman in a white dress joined the clatter, and could have only been Zelda by the way she sounded. Kaladin would've liked to pull her aside to talk, because he still had questions, but he was the center of attention for the moment. The blond remained quiet, until Riju finally introduced him as Link.
"Nice to meet you," Link said softly as he held out a hand.
Kaladin shook it and decided that he liked Link, as far as first impressions went.
Kaladin said,"So you're the hero. It's nice to finally meet you. Where were you all this time?"
Link explained quickly how he'd been teleported, unconscious, to the oathgate in Urithiru. From there he'd woken up in Lirin's medical bay, brought by Shallan and Adolin. He'd spent his time in the market and training grounds, mostly. Link told the story in as few words as possible, stopping only to explain some Roshar thing in response to Zelda's questions, or clarify with Kaladin that he'd explained things right.
Then Link explained that, according to Shallan's best guess, Kaladin and Link had swapped places when the shrine of resurrection put off a final burst of power. The oathgate in Urithiru happened to be active, which Kaladin confirmed, and had a connection to the shrine. Kaladin swapped places with Link, trading certain forms of Connection as well. Link said that teleporting back would probably fix things.
Finally Link said,"Shallan has configured some things on Urithiru's end and will be able to teleport you back, but only until the end of the day. Shallan lent me a fabrial clock and if its still accurate, you've only got an hour or two left. I hope that's okay."
"Thank you, Link. I'm sorry that you got thrown into this mess, but I'm glad that you and Shallan were able to get you home. I hope you aren't mad that I took on your quest."
Link smiled. "Absolutely not. While I was on Roshar they wouldn't let me help with anything. It was practically a vacation. I love Hyrule, but somebody always needs help finding their chickens, or fighting off bokoblins." Kaladin agreed. The people of Hyrule were hardy, but that didn't mean they knew how to do everything. That seemed to be the hero's job. "Besides, the Calamity's defeat is all that really matters. I would've helped more but I didn't get here until they," He gestured towards the group,"were gathering to fight. Zelda had sent them to Impa's, which happened to be the first place I went to, and said that some hero guy needed help fighting Ganon. I only had time to grab the master sword before Purah teleported us to the field. You should have seen them. Everyone here was determined to rescue you."
There was silence for a moment, and Kaladin didn't know what to say. Sidon spoke first. "My people have hated the Hylians for years. No offense to Link and Zelda." He flashed a smile. "You might not be Hylian officially, but I think that the way you, Kaladin, so graciously helped my people in their time of need will taint those relations for years to come. I owed you one for that, and still do. It was an easy decision to make."
Yunobo spoke next,"Goro, you saved my life up there on Eldin peak. You showed a lot more faith in me than anyone else. I had to return the favor."
"You did my people a great service by rescuing the thunder helm, and Barta. Consider this a downpayment on that debt," Riju said, smiling.
Finally Teba spoke,"I'm not as eloquent as those three, but I can say for certain that you've changed my life just as much as the others. I was proud to be asked to help you. I still am. I hope you know that you have a permanent friend and ally among the Rito." Teba gained confidence as he talked. "And I'm sure I can speak for everyone when I say that we're going to miss you. Whatever battles you're fighting on Roshar, we want to help. Don't forget about us when you leave. I am proud to call you friend."
"As am I," said Sidon.
"I know I am," Riju said.
"Me too," Yunobo threw in.
Link and Zelda nodded.
Link added,"I haven't known you for long, and I hope that will change soon. Shallan said that she was going to try to get the portal between our worlds stable. Plus, Impa explained the perpendiculars to me. I'm sure in time that those will enable travel as well. I hope that our worlds will remain close."
Before Kaladin could say anything, Yunobo pulled him into a hug that everyone but Link and Zelda joined in on. Though they couldn't see her, Syl was perched on his shoulder, smiling. Out of the corner of his eye, Kaladin saw Zelda off to the side. She had been uncharacteristically quiet for the last few minutes. When the hug finally dissolved, Kaladin excused himself and walked with Zelda out of earshot, if not sight, of the group.
