A Very Merry Birthday
31st of Sun's Height, 4E 202
The month of Sun's Height had been hectic. Balgruuf the Greater had been crowned High King at the start of the month. Together with his wife Katla, also known as the Dragonborn, he had been going over everything that needed to be dealt with throughout the country. In most cases, it was up to the local Jarls, but some things were just not fair to place solely in their hands. Like the rebuilding of Helgen for example. No one could have predicted the dragon attack. So High King Balgruuf was doing his best to make sure that his country was taken care of. Another thing he was doing was creating a national guard force that patrolled the roads in all holds. He was tired of lawbreakers slipping through their fingers simply because they left for another hold.
With the recruitment and the rebuilding, they had a rather busy schedule. That was one of the reasons that come the twenty-seventh of the month Katla left Whiterun to go home to Lakeview Manor. She spent three days at her forge working hard, but it was worth it.
The morning of the thirty-first found her in the kitchen baking. She knew that Rashall, Naya and Harry would return home soon, and she wanted everything to be ready for the birthday boy. The smell of cinnamon rolls filled the kitchen as meat pies cooled on the counter. Katla had been up since dawn. She loved cooking but didn't get much chance to do it anymore. The servants handle that. It made her all the happier that she did have Lakeview to run off to at times.
The front door opened and Katla walked out of the kitchen.
"Hey, Katla it smells nice," Harry said as he entered.
"That was my intention," Katla responded. She walked up to him and pulled him into a hug. "Happy birthday Harry," she said.
Harry chuckled. "Thanks, sis," he said.
"How did it go?" Katla asked.
"Well enough. Some new bandits had moved in, but they weren't really a problem."
A few weeks earlier Rashall and Naya had set off with Harry to find some of the Word Walls that Katla had already been to. It seemed as if they were successful. Harry opened a journal and showed her the copies of the ancient texts that he had made. "I'll organize everything at some point," he said. "Then I think I will build a thesaurus. If that works out maybe we can teach people to at least understand Dragon-tongue. Both Rashall and Naya are interested."
Katla laughed at his enthusiasm and messed with his hair. "There is water for a bath ready and clean clothes and towels down in the bathroom. Go clean up," she said sternly though the twinkle in her eyes threw it off.
"Thanks, Katla," Harry said before heading downstairs.
"Did this one hear there is a bath ready?" Naya said as she walked into the house. "Katla is very thoughtful, yes. Naya very much appreciates her kindness."
Katla smiled softly. Naya was a nice addition to their family. She fit in perfectly.
It took quite some time before Rashall joined the other two down in the bath. He had cleared out some uninvited guests from Pinewatch before heading home.
"Bandits these days don have any finesse," Rashall complained. "They just leave their rubbish lying about. I almost killed meself on some stupid pots in a corner."
"Rashall there isn't a bandit in the world that could ever live up to your standards," Harry said amused.
"This one agrees with Harry-ma. Rashall-dar is Speaker and Silencer," Naya said.
"And a nasty sneak thief," Harry said before he started laughing.
Naya snickered.
"Like ya're one to talk," Rashall told Naya grumpily. His eyes narrowed and he launched forward. He grabbed Harry and forced the boy down beneath the surface.
Harry fought back until Rashall had to let go to get air. He didn't surface though. Instead, he twisted around, muffled his movement and swam down to the draining hatch. He pushed it open and squeezed through. Then he pulled the secondary hatch and snuck into a corner as the water flooded out.
"Ha ha ha, Harry," Rashall said. "You can't hide forever." He jumped out of the tub and looked around.
"Vokun Vulom Brendon," Harry whispered. He moved forward, keeping to the shadows as much as he could and then he leapt and wrapped his arms around Rashall. "Got you!" he called out as he broke the magic of the Thu'um.
"Why ya little rascal," Rashall said. He grabbed Harry's arms and threw him over himself.
"Fus," Harry called just before he was about to land on the ground in front of Rashall. Since he was still in the air and therefore not grounded, he was the one sent back. He laughed and grabbed his towel before drying himself off quickly. He snatched his clothes from where they lay before disappearing up the stairs to the office.
Naya laughed heartily. She walked up to Rashall and nuzzled him affectionately. "This one thinks Rashall-dar is doing a good job teaching Harry-ma now," she said with a purr.
"He's gotten more accustomed to this world. It's easier to make him understand what I mean now," Rashall responded.
"This one thinks it also is because Rashall-dar cares more for Harry now," Naya said.
"That's certainly possible," Rashall responded with a shrug.
They dried off, got dressed and followed Harry up the stairs. As they reached the dining hall they found Harry sitting by the table, eating pie and talking to Katla about their latest adventures. "I kinda wish you'd been there too," he finished with.
"Not good enough for ya cub?" Rashall asked. The grin he spotted told everyone that he wasn't really upset.
"That's not what I mean and you know it," Harry answered.
Naya walked around the table and sat down next to him. "So Harry-ma is fifteen now. To Khajiit Harry-ma is adult, but this one thinks Rashall-dar will treat Harry-ma as child for quite some time yet," she said. "Harry-ma shouldn't be sad about it. Khajiit mother can be nasty when cub is grown up."
"Since you still think of me as a child as well Naya-ko I guess I can stand it," Harry said dramatically.
Katla laughed. She rose from the table to get some more food. Then they ate and they talked happily.
Once the food was consumed Katla brought out dessert and she fetched a present that had been lying in the kitchen as well and placed it in front of Harry. "Happy birthday Harry," she said warmly.
"Thank you Katla," Harry responded. He opened the parcel and found within it a beautiful moonstone and glass sword. The malachite was not green but a dark blue and the contrast against the white of the moonstone was spectacular. "Thank you Katla," he studied the sword closer and realised that it held a multi-enchantment that conducted magic. Unlike a magically enhanced sword that would burn or freeze or electrocute the target, this sword would allow Harry to use it as a focus for his magic no matter what the spell was. He smiled at Katla.
"Now Katla-do does it again. This one thinks we should ban Katla-do from giving gifts," Naya said.
Rashall laughed. "She's quite good at makin one-of-a-kind weapons, that's for sure," he said.
Naya handed Harry her birthday gift which was a very nice hand-crafted necklace with a spell woven into it that would help focus his magic.
Harry hugged her as he thanked her for the gift. Then it was Rashall's turn. He offered Harry a set of potions that together would permanently enhance his hearing. "Ya'll be able to hear almost as good as a Khajiit with those," he said.
"Awesome," Harry said. "When do I take them?"
"In the evenin before goin to bed," Rashall answered. "Only one each night."
Harry nodded. He wondered how Rashall had made potions that could do that but knew that he wouldn't understand the answer.
After that, they ate dessert while Rashall told many stories of his adventures before he met Katla. Some were probably not quite true, but no one cared since they were all entertaining. They spoke late into the night about many things both past and future. Suddenly the front door flew open. Katla was out of her chair and armed in seconds. She walked forward until she saw the intruder in the darkness. "It's a Khajiit," she called back.
Both Naya and Rashall headed out while Katla lit the lamps hanging around the room.
"He's a farmer," Rashall said quickly. "Ya can tell by the clothes and the dirt."
"This one thinks he has been running for a long time. Maybe even from Elsweyr," Naya said. "He has fainted from exhaustion."
"Let's bring him up to the spare room and bar it," Katla said. "I don't want to give him free rein of the house before we are awake and have spoken to him."
"That's wise," Rashall said.
"That is an interesting end to a birthday," Harry commented as they got ready for bed but before they had closed their doors.
"You could say that," Katla said.
Harry just chuckled before bidding the ladies goodnight. He walked over to his desk and sat down. A worn piece of parchment lay flat on the desk. "I solemnly swear that I'm up to no good," he said as he tapped his wand against the parchment. Slowly thin black lines moved out from the wand to reveal the Marauders' Map. He studied the map like he had done many times before. He looked over at his notes and sighed. Nothing had changed. It was still the same as every other time he had activated it. The Map seemed frozen in time. Harry still wondered if that meant his time on Earth was frozen too, or if it just meant that the Map was broken.
He caressed Hermione's nameplate. She was in the common room. She was probably sitting in her favourite chair with a good book waiting for him to come back so he could tell her what Hagrid had wanted. "I miss you, Hermione," he said softly. "Your lectures, your laugh, even your bossy attitude. I wish you could be here."
Harry rose from his desk and walked over to the bed. He tore his shirt off and flopped down. A deep sigh left him as he closed his eyes. He missed Hermione.

Harry placed the letter to the side to dry. He had decided to write to Hermione despite his inability to send those letters. Maybe someday he could give them to her. He rose from his desk and headed out of the room. The guest room that had housed the intruder during the night stood open. Only Katla was in the kitchen when he entered. "So Rashall and Naya disappeared somewhere with our guest?" he asked after he had greeted her.
"Yes, they are outside. He wanted to speak to them alone," Katla said. "I don't mind since they will tell us what is going on later."
Harry nodded. He certainly understood her. It was easier to allow the unknown Khajiit to get what he wanted and then discuss it later. He cracked an egg as he started preparing his breakfast. "I was thinking of going down to Illinata for a swim after I've eaten," he said.
"Would you like some company?" Katla asked.
"I wouldn't mind some," Harry answered. "If nothing else it is easier to deal with unwanted idiots if you come along."
Katla laughed merrily. "That is true I guess," she said, still smiling. She messed his hair up before heading upstairs.
That evening the four inhabitants of Lakeview Manor gathered around the dining table to speak. The Khajiit farmer had come from a small village that had recently been blessed with a rather large number of cubs at once. It was unusual, but not unheard of. However, the Thalmor had shown up and killed most of the adults before stealing the cubs. The farmer was a father and wanted his cubs back. His mate had been killed in the attack, and he was at his wit's end. He had heard tails of Rashall and come to Skyrim to get his help in rescuing the cubs.
"This one must travel to Elsweyr," Naya said. "Rashall and Naya cannot do this on their own."
"Ya're right," Rashall said. "We'll need backup."
Katla nodded slowly. "I can't do that much to help you," she said. "This will be a sneak and rescue. I'm not good at things like that. However, I can try to keep Thalmors' eyes on Skyrim. All I have to do is overtly muster our forces."
"That would be appreciated," Rashall said.
"We can enchant some things too," Harry pointed out.
Katla nodded. "We'll get started on muffle, waterbreathing and…" she thought about it for a moment, "and self-healing enchantments," she said. "We'll figure out something else as well. We'll place it on rings and necklaces that you can take with you Naya."
"This one will leave with our friend in three days. He needs to rest," Naya said.
Katla nodded. "We should be able to get at least a few pieces done by then," she said.
They broke up the meeting and went to bed. The next few days would be busy.

Naya packed the last of the jewellery that Harry and Katla had enchanted into her bag. Twenty-eight pieces. Hopefully, that would help some at least. She fastened the pack on her back. "Time to go," she told her travel companion.
"Kyne's wind guide your feet," Katla said.
Naya nodded and the two headed out.
It was early. The sun had barely risen beyond the mountaintops. Birds were singing a hymn to greet the new day. It felt strange, Naya noted. She was heading home. Though now she also felt like she was leaving home at that same time. A small smile played over her face as her tail gained a happy hook. She was a lucky Khajiit.
Sometime later when the sun stood high in the sky it was Katla's and Harry's turn to leave Lakeview. They were heading over to Helgen to check on the progress there. While they walked they spoke about Earth. Harry told Katla as much as he could about his homeland while realizing that he didn't know that much. "So non-magical people have invented flying machines that can carry dozens of people?" Katla said.
Harry nodded. "While magical people have a bunch of ways to travel far. They can fly on brooms or take a portkey for example. Or floo using a fireplace. We have developed in different ways using different methods, but most things a magical person can do a non-magical can do as well," Harry said.
Katla hummed as she took in the new information. Harry's home planet seemed quite confusing.
The gates of Helgen stood open as they arrived. Inside the walls, men and women worked to rebuild what was destroyed when Alduin attacked. Several houses were already done. Katla complimented them on their fine work.
Harry wandered off on his own and looked around. They weren't just rebuilding inside the city. They were also reinforcing and preparing the city for siege. This was one of the places where an attack was likely to come from when the Thalmor realised that they were going to do as they wanted.
War was coming and the people were preparing for it.
"Katla, do you think we could get away with a bigger barricade outside of the city?" the build master asked.
"Yes," Katla said. "Go ahead. If we get any questions about that can say that it is because we fear bandit raids on the city."
"Fantastic. I'll get some people working on that right away then," the build master said.
Katla smiled as he rushed off. Things were coming along according to plan.
