Natasha could never truly be prepared for what happens on missions, sure the aqua-haired woman could carry a medical kit, carry extra equipment, but all these little items were just precautions as they do not prepare anybody for situations like this.
"Get down!"
Natasha heard Leon shout through the deafening crash, but it was way too late as Natasha felt the burning sensation rip through her tired and aching body. A bullet was never good especially when it went through her side.
Natasha screamed out in pure agony as she fell to the ground hands clutching at the rapidly bleeding wound, the deafening ringing in her ears made her head spin as she heard the distant sound of an ambulance and several police sirens.
Leon knew in this line of work death was inevitable, it was something that loomed over him and he knew it was only a matter of time before it finally came and take someone, but he never thought it would take the person who truly mattered.
Natasha…
All Leon felt was this horrible sinking feeling, it was like his entire world has just come crashing down, his whole body weighing heavy with this unfiltered anxiety as he ran toward Natasha.
"Hey, Hey- okay o-okay…"
Leon's voice was strained and hoarse from the shouting he had done hours ago, Natasha's blue eyes looked up at him and smiled so softly, Leon almost missed the shy smile that the young woman had, and he hates the pain that lingered behind her beautiful eyes.
His hands go to cover the wound at the side of Natasha's stomach, he had seen this before in fact he has seen this one too many times and he knew people rarely survive this type of injury, no he shouldn't think like that he knew that Natasha would survive and be fine.
As he applies pressure to the wound Natasha let out a scream of pain, she screamed and begged for him to stop as he continues to apply pressure and all Leon could see was the blood seeping through his fingers and he hates seeing it.
"Le-Leon."
Natasha lets out a gasp, her hands grasping at his blue shirt, the young woman was scared and she didn't want to let go. Natasha could feel herself slipping and Leon could see it in her eyes.
"I know- I know it hurts Natasha-"
Leon tries to comfort her but he has tears falling from his eyes, he takes one of her hands into his bloody one. Natasha's head turns to look over at the civilian bus as paramedics helped the people, especially the parents and children who were hiding there. All Natasha could do was smile through the pain as her own tears fell.
"Hey- Hey don't look at them just focus on me okay? Ple-Please don't go."
Leon's voice cracks with heartbreak as the bleak reality sets in, his blood-soaked hand cups Natasha's jaw and he moves her face to focus on him. All he could see now was the faint glimmer of life in her eyes.
"Sweetheart please stay with me-okay?-" he spoke but natasha didn't reply "Somebody help!" he called out with desperation, his voice died out as Natasha slipped away from consciousness and she was basking in the sudden peaceful feeling that washed through her.
Natasha couldn't remember much about how she ended up here, bright lights and the soft humming of the machines that loomed by her with the occasional beeping of a heart monitor, it was all very unsettling and painful.
Everything was hurting…
Natasha noticed that Leon's hand was clutching hers before she even saw the bandages that were wrapped around her stomach. She looked over to Leon whose head was against the hospital bed. He was soundly sleeping and she couldn't help but smile at the sight, her hands weakly moving to thread through his hair.
Immediately Leon woke up at the sudden feeling he was sitting upright in his chair and he dragged it closer so he could be by her side. "Fucking Hell." He whispers as he caresses her cheek and she could instantly see the expression of disbelief which was painting his face as if he truly thought that he had lost her.
"How long?" Natasha asks, her voice hoarse.
"A Day- A really long and exhausting day." Leon mumbles guiding the younger woman's hand to his lips as he kisses her knuckles softly, "I thought you- I thought I'd lost you." He whispers scared to say it out loud just in case it became true.
"I am right here- I am Oka-" Leon doesn't let her finish.
"-You're only allowed to say that once you are off life support." he smiled as Natasha weakly giggles, wiping away the stray tear from his eye.
"I will be okay Leon… I promise." Natasha smiles as Leon goes and calls for the doctors.
Leon's eyes were heavy with the lack of sleep and his hair looks as if it needed a thorough washing, he hadn't left Natasha's side in fear that she would leave him and the thought alone was scary enough to break the man. Maybe that is why Natasha doesn't say anything as he feeds her the gross hospital food, chuckling softly every time her face scrunches up in disapproval of the meal.
"That tasted like shit Leon." Natasha mumbles as he laughs helping her to lay back down on the bed, the doctors said that Natasha was making a swift recovery and that it was a miracle that she survived but Natasha knew that Leon was still apprehensive about it all, The agent was still terrified of losing her.
It was clear by the way Leon looked at her, she could sense the uncertainty and the nervousness which glossed over his eyes, and the way he held her hand as if she would slip away from him in a single moment.
"I can't lose you."
He finally speaks as Natasha looks up at him, "I love you- I love you so much-" Leon cries softly as Natasha's hand reaches up to his face urging him to lean to her, he kisses her softly making sure not to hurt her and the pair melt into the peaceful feeling.
"I love you too Leon I love you so much," Natasha whispers to him brushing his hair from his face.
Leon just hides his tears in Natasha's hair before he spoke.
"Never again." He told Natasha as he held her hand.
Natasha squeezed his hand as she replied.
"Never again."
