The Dark Energem
The Morphin Masters were revered as the epitomes of wisdom and power, yet it was easy to forget that wisdom came with experience and age and once, thousands of years ago, the Masters were young and naïve, making many mistakes in their youth… mistakes that haunted the universe even now.
Light begets dark and vice versa, because there must always be balance in the universe. That was the absolute law of existence, something no power could break.
Following their new found mastery of the Morphin Grid, the young masters had been prompt to create numerous sources of power for young warriors to wield, intending on bolstering the ranks of the warriors of good, unaware that for every new team of rangers they empowered, the universe was spawning a new variety of evil to maintain the balance.
For every new morpher, there was a staff or sword that would darken the soul of their wielder.
For the power coins, there was the Sword of Darkness.
For the Zeo Crystal, there was the Psycho Prisms.
For the energems, there was the Dark Energem or as it was aptly called the Orb of Doom… the condensed form of the darkness cast out by the light of the energems.
Once the Morphin Masters saw what they had inadvertently caused, they retreated into the Grid, vowing only to intervene in the direst of circumstances, in order to avoid being the cause for the birth of new evil. The damage they had already caused would plunge the universe into a never ending war that would span a millennia… No matter how well intentioned their actions were, they had upset the balance and now the universe paid for it in blood and destruction. Planets destroyed, civilisations lost, innocents slaughtered, timelines erased… that was all their doing.
The worst of their crimes was ever creating the energems from one of the primordial stones of reality… the infinity stone of time. The mystical connection with time was what allowed their wielders to harness the strength of creatures long lost to time. However, the Dark Energem had tapped into the timestream as well, and could twist anyone unfortunate enough to physically touch the artefact into becoming the most heinous and evil variant of themselves from all the possible timelines.
That was why it was imperative that the Dark Energem be guarded from the forces of evil at all costs. Not only would it maximise their abilities, but also it would allow them to do the same to their opponents… converting the forces of light into agents of evil.
The Morphin Masters had seen it happen countless times. Dark Spectre and later Master Vile had used the Dark Energem to rob the forces of light of their finest warriors and create despicable entities like Lord Zedd, Rita Repulsa, Scorpina, Divatox, Count Dregon and Ivan Ooze among others. After Master Vile had lost the Orb of Doom in an attempt to use it's time manipulation abilities to turn back time on Earth, the great warrior Ninjor, a trusted ally of the Morphin Masters and their agent on the physical plane had recovered the Dark Energem and entrusted it to the Guardians of Sentai Six.
Subsequently, Zordon of Eltar's selfless sacrifice and the great wave of goodness that had purged nearly all the forces of evil had reversed the damage caused by the Dark Energem to a large extent and the Masters were relieved.
But the peace was not to last.
A power hungry warlord by the name of Lord Arcanon, a former acolyte of Master Vile, started vying for the power of the Dark Energem, scouring the universe for it's hiding place and ultimately arriving at Sentai Six. While the Guardians put up a good fight, they were no match for the brutality of Arcanon's armies and he finally obtained his coveted prize, destroying the once peaceful planet and it's inhabitants, all save for one, who had been twisted by the Dark Energem into becoming the very opposite of what he once stood for.
The Morphin Masters mourned the loss of Sentai Six and yet did not intervene, watching as Lord Arcanon, hungry for more power, headed towards Earth, where the other energems were hidden, for they trusted that the universe would maintain the balance and that the champions of the Energems would persevere against Lord Arcanon and the perverse nature of the Dark Energem.
