"Idiot boy!" snarled Snape, clearing the spilled potion away with one wave of his wand. "I suppose you added the porcupine quills before taking the cauldron off the fire?" Neville whimpered as boils started to pop up all over his nose. "Take him up to the hospital wing," Snape spat at Seamus. Then he rounded on Harry and Ron, who had been working next to Neville. "You... Potter... why didn't you tell him not to add the quills? Thought he'd make you look good if he got it wrong, did you? That's another point you've lost for Gryffindor." Jade could tell Harry was about to open his mouth to argue, but Ron kicked him behind their cauldron. "Don't push it," he muttered to Harry. "Why should he stay silent?" Jade interrupted the Weasly. "I've heard Snape can turn very nasty and what's it matter to you? Arent you on his side?" Ron asked as they climbed the steps out of the dungeon, Harry's mind was racing and his spirits were low.
He'd lost two points for Gryffindor in his very first week. 'Why did Snape hate him so much?' Jade could almost see his thoughts in his eyes as though he'd just spoken them. "Just 'cause I'm a Slytherin doesn't mean I can't see right and wrong when it's right in front of me." She said with a glare. "Cheer up," said Ron to Harry. "Snape's always taking points off Fred and George. Can I come and meet Hagrid with you?" She heard it, but couldn't bring herself to go with them as she didn't know them well and she thought Hagrid was kinda creepy looking. So at three she politely excused herself from their company and left the castle. Moments later she found a perfectly quiet spot near the lake that brought them all to the school and practiced turning a stone into something living, anything would do. After attempting this for a little over an hour she got frustrated and threw the rock into the lake and grumbled.
But her frustration wasn't from not being able to turn the rock into something living, no Mcgrongal had told them it'd be expected they don't do something like that for quite some time. Her frustration was still at not receiving a letter from the only people she had loved her whole life. 'Did they not want anything to do with me now? Would they not still love me even if I do find my parents?' She thought to herself and let out a sigh when she noticed her anger was affecting her so much her hands began to shake. She took several deep breaths and then sat calmly near the edge of the water. She knew exactly what to do to calm her anger. She needed to sing her feelings out. So she pulled out her mp3 and sang the words to the song that popped up.
~~~With Draco~~~
Draco had gotten worried he hadn't seen Daphne all day. She'd been like a sister to him since they were practically raised together. He knew no matter how much she'd been feeling she'd never skip a meal and would even lecture him about doing so when he was sick. He walked into the Slytherin common room to see if she was there. As he walked in and said the password he realized he was right as he spotted her with a cup of tea sitting near the fireplace. 'uh-oh...' he thought. 'Either I've done something to piss her off, or she's going to tell me something she'd been trying to for a while, and last time it was the first one I hope it's the other this time' He thought as he walked up to sit in the chair next to her. "Good afternoon Daphne." He greeted. "Huh? Oh Hello Draco..." She greeted back but she had a thoughtful far off look on her face and as he was about to ask her why Pansy came in with a plate of food.
When Pansy placed the plate on the other side of Daphne he glared at the plate. "Are you kidding me?! You haven't eaten at all today have you?" He said yelling, but when she remained quiet he got even madder. "What the hell's going on? You've never stopped eating before so spill." He said sounding much like his father when he'd done something bad. "Daphne if you don't tell him I will. He needs to know... hell his aunt needs to know." Pansy said. Daphne glared at Pansy half-heartedly as she explained meeting Jade on the train and overhearing her talking to his father's owl *she didn't know it was his father's*. "So she can talk to animals, what's that got to do with me and my family?" Draco asked with his arms folded over his chest. "Before I left her compartment, she'd said the goblins at Gringotts wouldn't tell her who her real parents were," Daphne told him as he just stared at her.
"Why?" He asked as he began to suspect where Daphne was going with this conversation. 'But there's no way Jade's my cousin... Right?' He thought. "I guess Dumbledore told them if they revealed her identity to her he'd get them removed from working in the bank for good, I went there this morning with Pansy to ask about it." Draco's eyes bulged and he slumped in his chair. "So what are you saying exactly?" He asked but sounded defeated as he knew the answer. "You know exactly what she's saying Draco. Stop playing dumb for just one moment won't you." Draco sighed. "As much as I'd like to just assume your right. I can't just tell my Aunt I've found her daughter without real proof." "Well, why not get Snape to test her blood?" Pansy asked. "That should be an easy task for him and you as he's your godfather and her potions professor."
"That should work, thanks, Pansy!" Draco said as he got up from his seat. "And Daphne, don't go starving yourself over this again, or I'll never let you live it down." And with that, he left.
~With Jade~
Draco had just found her, though he really wasn't looking for her. He was trying to find Snape who to his luck had been watching her from a distance seemingly trying to figure out who she was as well. Jade had spent the last thirty minutes singing about families that were torn apart, but this one tore even his heartstrings. She hasn't left her spot near the edge of the water but now she was looking at her reflection as she sang.
Lindsay Lohan - Confessions Of a Broken Heart
"I wait for the postman,
To bring me a letter,
And I wait for the good Lord,
To make me feel better,
And I carry the weight of the world
On my shoulders
Family in crisis that only grows older
Why'd you have to go?
Why'd you have to go?
Why'd you have to go?
Daughter to father!
Daughter to father!"
She sang fully captivated by the words and she closed her eyes as her singing got louder. Not aware of the growing amount of eyes watching her.
"I am broken, but I am hoping
Daughter to father!
Daughter to father!
I am crying, a part of me's dying!
and these are...
These are the Confessions...
Of a Broken Heart!"
She sang as a few tears slid down her face and dripped into the water.
"I wear all your old clothes,
your polo sweater
And I dream of another you!
One who would never... never,
Leave me alone... to pick up the pieces
Daddy to hold me
that's what I needed...
So why'd you have to go?
Why'd you have to go?
Why'd you have to go?"
She then looked up towards the blue sky that she thought looked like it was mocking her for being so bright.
"Daughter to father!
Daughter to father!
I don't know you, but I still want to
Daughter to father!
Daughter to father!
Tell me the truth
Did you ever love me?
Cuz these are, these are
the Confessions...
Of a Broken Heart!
Of a Broken Heart!"
As she sang, her tears began streaming and you can just hear the sadness in her voice but she didn't choke or stop for even a moment.
"I-i love you
I-i love you
I-i love you!
I-i, I LOVED YOU!"
She practically yelled the last part to the sky as though somehow the message would reach Mr. and Mrs. Evans.
"Daughter to father!
Daughter to father!
I don't know you, but I still want to
Daughter to father!
Daughter to father!
Tell me the truth
Did you ever love me?
Did you ever love me?
These are..."
She sniffled a bit as she let her voice grow softer.
"The Confessions...
Of a Broken Heart!
Oh-oh yeah...
I wait for the postman,
to bring me a letter..."
After Jade stopped singing she finally began to sob quietly into her arms that were resting just over her legs. She still hadn't noticed the eyes that still rested on her yet but did notice a tabby cat sitting close to her and without knowing it was McGonagall in her animigus form, she pets the cat for a bit calmingly. Then as she stood she got the idea to try wandlessly turning a rock into a frog by placing her wand in a pocket. And when it worked she stared at the frog in disbelief before thinking; 'Was wandless magic the reason it hadn't worked before?' she thought as she smiled and whipped her tears away. 'Hmm do I even need a wand?' She began to think but inevitably decided it'd be best to at least always have it on her even if she never had to use it. As they were watching Jade sing another song, Draco quietly asked Snape if he could test her blood to see if she was related to his Aunt.
At first, Snape had refused as she seemed to him at least to not be related to any of the Pure-bloods he'd ever known but changed his mind after seeing her do wandless Transfiguration magic. 'The last time I'd seen anyone do wandless magic so early in life was Lord Voldemort' Snape thought to himself. 'I could always just test her to see if she's got pure blood first... then if she does I'll tell him.' He finished thinking as she walked back to the Slytherin common room with Draco.
~~~a Week and a Half Later~~~
Jade realized after several conversations with Harry and Ron she didn't mind Harry much, he was decently smart and just a decent person in general. But Ron, oh no she didn't just dislike him she couldn't stand him. He was as dumb as they come, seemed to automatically hate her for being a Slytherin if his remarks to Harry and Hermione were anything to go by, and smelled like he'd not bathed for months. Still, first-year Slytherins only had Potions with the Gryffindors, so she didn't have to put up with Weasly much. Or at least, not until they spotted a notice pinned up in the Slytherin common room which made them all groan. Flying lessons would be starting on Thursday and Gryffindor and Slytherin would be learning together. "Typical," said Jade darkly. "Just what I always wanted. To make a fool of myself on a broomstick in front of Weasly." She said sarcastically.
He had been looking forward to learning to fly but now she wasn't so sure. "You don't know you'll make a fool of yourself," said Daphne reasonably. "Anyway, if the Weasly is as good on a broom as he is with using his wand, then you have nothing to worry about." She said reassuringly with a smug smile. "Maybe..." Jade said, but her eyes sold her out still being a bit worried. Thankfully though Daphne just let it go tough. At breakfast, on Thursday Hermione bored all the first-years with flying tips she'd got out of a library book called 'Quidditch Through the Ages' Neville was hanging on to her every word, desperate for anything that might help him hang on to his broomstick later, but everybody else was very pleased when Hermione's lecture was interrupted by the arrival of the post. Draco's eagle owl has always brought him packages of sweets from home, which he opened gloatingly, mostly to annoy the Gryffindors and only sharing with Daphne or Jade if she saw something she liked.
Draco liked her, like a friend or older sister and felt bad that the only people she'd ever known to be her parents had essentially forgotten her. He watched as a barn owl brought Neville a small package from his grandmother at the Gryffindor table. The boy opened it excitedly and showed everyone at his table a glass ball the size of a large marble, which seemed to be full of white smoke. "It's a Remembrall!" Draco heard him tell them. "Gran knows I forget things, this tells you if there's something you've forgotten to do. Look, you hold it tight like this, and if it turns red, oh..." Neville's face fell because the Remembrall had suddenly glowed scarlet, "...you've forgotten something..." Neville was trying to remember what he'd forgotten when Draco, walked over towards them and snatched the Remembrall out of his hand. Harry and Ron jumped to their feet.
Draco knew they were just hoping for a reason to fight him, but Professor McGonagall, who could spot trouble quicker than any teacher in the school, was there in a flash. "What's going on?" "Malfoy's got my Remembrall, Professor." Scowling, Draco quickly dropped the Remembrall back on the table. "Just looking," he said, and he sloped away with Crabbe and Goyle behind him. 'You liar.' Thought Jade with a chuckle. She'd been watching them since Neville opened the gift. At three-thirty that afternoon, Jade, Draco, and the other Slytherins hurried down the front steps into the grounds for their first flying lesson and were there before the Gryffindors. It was a clear, breezy day and the grass rippled under their feet as they marched down the sloping lawns towards a smooth lawn on the opposite side of the grounds to the Forbidden Forest, whose trees were swaying darkly in the distance.
The Gryffindors finally showed up ten minutes later. Their teacher, Madam Hooch, arrived shortly after them. She had short, grey hair and yellow eyes like a hawk. "Well, what are you all waiting for?" she barked. "Everyone stand by a broomstick. Come on, hurry up." Harry glanced down at his broom. It was old and some of the twigs stuck out at odd angles. "Stick out your Right hand over your broom," called Madam Hooch at the front, "and say, 'Up!'" Jade who was left-handed decided she would instead use her wand hand rather than her right as she'd been asked to. "UP!" everyone shouted. Jade's broom jumped into her hand faster than anyone else in her house, but still just a few seconds slower than Harry's had. Neville's broom hadn't moved at all. 'Perhaps brooms, like horses, could tell when you were afraid', thought Jade as she noticed there was a quaver in Neville's voice that said only too clearly that he wanted to keep his feet perfectly planted on the ground.
Madam Hooch then showed them how to mount their brooms without sliding off the end, and walked up and down the rows, correcting their grips. She even told Draco he'd been doing it wrong, who looked mortified. "Now, when I blow my whistle, you kick off from the ground, hard," said Madam Hooch. "Keep your brooms steady, rise a few feet, and then come straight back down by leaning forwards slightly. On my whistle, three, two-" But Neville, nervous and jumpy and frightened of being left on the ground, pushed off hard before the whistle had touched Madam Hooch's lips. And all the Slytherins, Jade included, laughed at him. "Come back, boy!" Hooch shouted, but Neville was rising straight up like a cork shot out of a bottle, twelve feet, twenty feet. Moments later Neville ran sideways and fell off as he hit part of the building landing with a loud sickening crack.
His broomstick was still rising higher and higher and started to drift lazily towards the Forbidden Forest and out of sight. Madam Hooch was bending over Neville, her face as white as his. Jade couldn't hear what she'd just mumbled, but after glancing at Harry and Ron she could tell Harry had and it wasn't good. "Come on, boy, it's all right, up you go." She turned to the rest of the class. "None of you is to move while I take this boy to the hospital wing! You leave those brooms where they are or you'll be out of Hogwarts before you can say 'Quidditch' Come on, dear." Neville, his face tear-streaked, clutching his wrist, hobbled off with Madam Hooch, who had her arm around him. No sooner were they out of earshot had Draco burst into laughter. "Did you see his face, the great lump?" The other Slytherins joined in. "Shut up, Malfoy," snapped Parvati Patil.
