Scientific Minds

Summary: Will Sam and Daniel finally admit they have feelings for the other or keep life status quo?

AN: This is what happens when your husband and kids decide to have a Stargate marathon! Don't get me wrong, I love the series but as a fanfiction writer, the threat of a muse popping up is a real "threat". LOL So, I was trying to finish another fanfic so this could be written, however, it took over! LOL Anyway, here's my first ever SG1 story.

I am slowly transferring the hand written stories to the computer and editing them so, maybe, just maybe I can get them posted!

Thanks for checking this out. :)

Disclaimer: I make no monies with this.

"Daniel?"

"Yeah, Sam"

"I was hoping you could help me decipher the symbols on the artifact SG7 brought back from P6R-785? I used the guide you made me but they don't quite match." Sam asked.

"Sure, just give me a minute and I'll meet you in your lab." Daniel told her.

"Great! Thanks!" Sam said as she walked out.

Daniel watched her go and swallowed hard. He had been noticing Sam more and more here lately. It wasn't that he hadn't noticed she was female before now but his mind had been focused on finding Sha're. Now that she was gone, Daniel found himself remembering there were other women in the world. He would always love Sha're but she would never be a part of his life again and, it seemed, his heart and mind were trying to move on, once and for all. It was his time with Ke'ra that he first realized his healing was further along than he thought.

As his mind and heart battled before that night, Daniel knew his year with Sha're was beyond wonderful but she had been out of his life longer than she had been in it, for four years now. He had held out hope they would be reunited but the goa'uld in her had forced Teal'c to make a hard choice as it made sure Daniel knew who it was that was killing him. Of course, he had denied she was dead claiming she would have been put in a sarcophagus by her guards, causing Jack to wheel him down to see her body before he would give up the fight. Then he had lashed out at Teal'c for choosing him over Sha're, something he still felt guilty over. He should have never acted the way he had, should have known that Teal'c would only take such actions as a last resort, but grief and anger had clouded his mind and Teal'c was willing to take the brunt of it all. Fortunately, Jack was able to literally and figuratively smack him out of it, helping Daniel to see the state he was in and lend a shoulder for him to lean on to get his head on straight; understanding what Daniel was going through to some extent.

Daniel had spent a week solid afterwards locked in his office working until he finally and truly mourned the passing of his wife and acknowledged his pain wasn't as profound as he thought. The separation had slowly healed his heart and soul from losing Sha're without him realizing it; having never taken the time to examine his feelings. After his week-long isolation, Daniel realized his main problem was not knowing what to do now. Joining SG1 was so he could look for his taken wife and now that that wasn't needed, would he still be welcome? Of course, General Hammond and Jack had stilled that fear quickly, they had both told him, "You are a valuable member of the team and have proven yourself to all who mattered. If you chose to leave then you will have to find another reason." After that meeting, Daniel made his way to Teal'c's quarters and apologized profusely to the Jaffa.

"Teal'c, I owe you an apology."

"There is no need, DanielJackson."

"Yes, there is." Daniel countered. "The way I behaved was inexcusable."

"I was the reason for your grief. You had every right to take it out on me." Teal'c reasoned.

"Now, see, you're wrong." Daniel corrected. "Yes, you were the one to…kill…Sha're, but I know you did it as the only way to save me."

"That is correct." Teal'c stated.

"I was confused and angry and hadn't wanted to accept the goa'uld had won. My anger was personal and should not have been taken out on you." Daniel explained as he shoved his hands in his pockets and rocked back onto his heels. "I felt I had failed, well, everyone and couldn't see what the future held for me anymore."

"Are you not a member of SG1?" Teal'c wondered.

"Yes, but I wasn't sure if I still belonged." Daniel told him.

"Of course you belong, DanielJackson. You, Major Carter, Colonel O'Neill and I are, as you say, a well-oiled machine." Teal'c countered making Daniel smile.

"So I've been told. Anyway, I just wanted to say I'm sorry for how I treated you. You didn't deserve it." Daniel concluded.

"Then all is forgiven." Teal'c said as he gave Daniel a small smile and nod.

"Thanks Teal'c. I'll just; I'll just go and let you get back to kelnorim." Daniel said as he walked to the door and left.

**Flashback**

As Daniel shut and locked his office door, he wondered if he even had a chance with Sam. He remembered how the Tok'ra machine thought her and Jack Zatarcs because they had hidden their feelings for each other. Would she even see him as more than a fellow team member? By all he held dear, he hoped so, Sam was who he wanted. They had cultivated a friendship over the years, always bouncing ideas off each other, ranting when something didn't pan how they thought, always having each other's backs in any situation. Could he risk the wonderful friendship they had? Would he be able to act like nothing had changed if she wasn't interested in him the same way? Yes was the only answer he could come up with; it would be hard but he would do it. What they could have was worth the risk. Taking a deep breath, Daniel knocked on her door.

"Enter."

Samantha Carter loved a challenge. She loved being pushed to her limits only to come out ahead. However, the artifact SG7 had brought back was driving her crazy. She had been going through the guide Daniel had made her of the most common words used by the goa'uld but nothing was matching. Some were very close but not exact which was why she was headed to Daniel's office, she needed his help.

The only problem was, the more time she spent with the handsome archeologist, the more she wondered what it would be like to be kissed by him, to be held in his strong arms, to have his focus on her and her alone? Shaking her head to clear it of such thoughts, he was still mourning his wife after all, Sam stepped into his office.

After leaving with his agreement to help, Sam smiled and had a bounce to her step, partly due to getting his help and the other due to loving watching him work. He was as bad as her when something puzzled him, not giving up until he had solved it. Getting to her lab, she took a quick look around to make sure it was in some semblance of order, finding it was, she allowed her mind to drift back to Daniel. They had such a wonderful friendship, helping each other through long nights where they survived on coffee and an insatiable curiosity. Could she risk that? Could she risk the late night dinners one or the other would bring to the one caught up in a project? Could she risk ruining a friendship so rare she doubted she'd ever find anything like it again? Would she be able to go back to the way things were at this moment if he didn't feel the same? The first few questions were easy, yes she could. The last question she highly doubted it but needed to take the chance. She felt she would regret it if she didn't try. What really stumped her though was when? How long would he need to mourn a wife he had been in rare contact with over the past four years? She didn't want to come across as heartless or uncaring, she knew what it was like to lose someone who had captured the heart; Jonas Hanson came to mind. He had been her first real relationship and she had loved him deeply, deeply enough to consider marriage, but their personalities had clashed too much in the end. Then she had lost him several years after joining SG1 and, even though her love had lessened considerably by then, it had hurt to see him in such a state and to die before her eyes. She understood the need to mourn.

Sam knew, thanks to the Tok'ra machine, that she and Jack held their feelings in check to everyone around them but the truth was, she did care more than she should for a commanding officer but those feelings weren't romantic. Instead, it was a deep friendship that couldn't be explained but would be forbidden by the higher ups, they would cite that it could easily turn into something more. She had been told, by Jack, about the kiss he gave her when they had been stuck in the time loop. He had explained, that although it was pleasant, it wasn't exactly what he wanted. She, amazingly, hadn't been upset about it. She had understood why he had chosen then to do it. It was the only way to know without being separated or discharged, they were both too disciplined to figure it out any other way and after some thought, she knew she would have done the same. The good thing was that they knew there were no romantic feelings but, in a way, a worse relationship; one that ran deeper than any romantic love.

Shaking her head to clear it again, Sam focused on the troublesome artifact. A short time later, a knock on the door interrupted her concentration. Realizing it would be Daniel, she call out "Enter" and forced herself to not look when he walked in. As he stood next to her, Sam leaned a bit more on the table, Holy Hannah but he smelled so good.

When Daniel entered, he paused a moment to appreciate the view of Sam while her focus was elsewhere. Fatigue's normally weren't considered stylish but Sam made them look good, damn good and sexy. Quietly inhaling, Daniel enjoyed the scent of Sam. She never wore perfume and she didn't need to, her scent was enticing without covering it with artificial scents. Whatever cleaning soaps she used had a very light floral scent to it, pleasing but not overwhelming. Once by her side, Daniel had to suppress a groan. God bless the person who chose tee shirts as a part of the uniform. Forcing himself to focus on his reason for being there, Daniel leaned towards the artifact to inspect what was causing Sam so much trouble.

As he leaned in, he noticed what was causing so much trouble for the beautiful scientist. It was a dialect of goa'uld that was out of use for a very long time. The symbols were close but not the same. For the next several hours Daniel studied the obsolete language. It fascinated him how all languages evolved and words sometimes changed meaning. The English language was the perfect example and that was just in the last few hundred years or so. The first world to pop in his head was intercourse, knowing exactly where his mind truly was, it didn't surprise him at all. Today it everyone only remembered the sexual connotation but its origin meant conversation or communication. Then there were the many, many dialects and don't get him started on all the slang. Languages were easy, slang and dialects were what made learning them difficult.

Through bouncing ideas off Sam, Daniel finally managed to decipher the text. After he properly translated the artifact, he and Sam hugged in celebration, like many times before, but this time was different; this time they both held the other a little tighter, a little longer than before; both inhaling the scent they had come to love. When they pulled away, Daniel couldn't help but frame her face with his hands as his thumbs caressed her cheeks. When her lips parted and her eyes fluttered, he gently pulled her to him and softly kissed her. Feeling Sam press closer to him was all he needed to know she wanted this as much as he did and he deepened the kiss. When the need for air made itself known, the pair stared into the other's eyes before smiles appeared. Nothing needed to be said, they both wanted something more. Yes they would have to keep it on the down low, keeping any public displays to nonexistent but it would be so worth it.
