Season 3 – Episode 6 – "Money Maker"
"I don't know what to say." Jane was completely out of her depth here. This was not a broken heart over a boyfriend. This was serious shit. She had come running when her phone rang under Maura's id, and when Jane answered she could only hear Maura saying Jane's name and a sob. She drove like a mad woman to Maura's house. Jane hugged Maura tightly, trying to calm the raking sobs shaking her, and Maura told her among copious tears the scene that had taken place first with Cailin and then with Cailin and Hope.
Jane had concerned before that Maura withholding the information about Hope being her birth mother might sound like a betrayal when told later. But it had not even be that later and the reaction had not been good. Jane thanked the God's for not having that revelation done in the lab in their first encounter, the repercussions would have been much worse than this was – and this was already very bad.
Jane finally had managed to get Maura sitting in the sofa for the past few minutes for them to talk.
Maura sniffled. "Out of all the scenarios I thought of... that wasn't one of them."
"She's in denial. She's in shock. Imagine, how would you react if a grown woman walked up to you and said... 'How you doing? I'm your... dead baby.'"
Maura sighed "And what about Cailin? If she doesn't let me help her, she'll die."
"Maura." Jane sighed. "You can't force your kidney on her."
"I wish I could." Maura sniffled. "I don't know. I never, ever meant to cause them any pain. It's just so awful."
"Well, I tried to warn you. Family sucks." Jane stated, offering her a new tissue. "Blow."
"No." Maura paused. "No. I'm all cried out. Okay? I'm done. I'm done. And, actually, I'm a little insulted."
"What'd I do?" Jane questioned, uncertain of where that conversation was heading or what she could have done or said to insult Maura.
"That girl rejected my kidney."
"The nerve." Jane finally got the gist of it.
"I know. Right? It's a very nice kidney."
"I'm sure it is." Jane chuckled, following Maura's lead. "You should keep it... in your body. I'm just saying."
Maura chuckled in response.
"I mean it, Maura. Rejecting a kidney 100% organic, GMO-Free, and grass-fed…"
"Grass-fed, Jane?"
"Considering your favoritism for salads, I am going for grass-fed."
Jane felt better with her ability to distract Maura a bit, seeing her chuckle to her antics. But then Maura became somber again.
"She will die without my kidney."
"There will be another donor, I am sure."
"Possibly, but not in time for her not to die, Jane."
"She does not want your kidney, Maura."
"And that means I need to find a way for her to accept it. If at least Hope had not bolted too…" Maura sniffed again.
Jane could only imagine how Maura was feeling. Rejected by her birth mother. Rejected by her half-sister. Jane actually couldn't even imagine how Maura was feeling. How many times Maura had likely pictured her birth mother as she was growing up? Every time she felt lonely, or benignly neglected by her adoptive parents? Certainly too many to count. And now, when finally life had given a chance of engaging, when stars aligned and they found themselves in the same place again, things derailed so fast that looking at Maura's dejected face Jane had the impression she had been hit by a freight train.
"So you think Hope wouldn't help convince Cailin?"
"After the way they left my house a while ago, Jane, I can't say. It felt like I had leprosy in the highest contagious form and they couldn't get away from me fast enough." Maura's hurtful tone was painful to hear.
Jane took Maura's hand between hers, stroking it gently.
"See? No leprosy."
Maura chuckled between tears, shaking her head.
"Jane, I can't let an eighteen-year-old half-sister of mine die knowing there is something simple I can do save her."
"Donating your kidney is not exactly what I would call simple, Maura."
"Simple in the sense of being in the realm of my power and possibilities to resolve."
"Not simple in the sense of not being in the realm of your half-sister or of your birth mother willingness to accept it. I told you already, Maura, you cannot force your kidney on her."
"What if she dies, Jane?"
"She has a choice, Maura. You are giving her a choice, a chance. If she decides to choose differently, you cannot blame yourself for her decision, for their choice."
"Can't I? Would they have decided this way if I was not Cailin's half-sister or Hope's daughter?"
"Would you even be compatible with Cailin if you were not Cailin's half-sister or Hope's daughter?"
Maura sniffed, shaking her head. She knew rationally Jane was right. But it didn't make it any easier to accept that a teenager would die when it was within the realm of Maura's possibilities to help her live what could be a long and fruitful life.
"I just… I just don't know what to do…"
"It seems pretty simple to me. If she does not want your prize winning, gmo-free, grass-fed, 100% organic kidney, it is her loss. You should keep your kidney. Inside you."
"It does not seem like I have any other alternative, anyway…"
"And for the record, since I told you that I would definitely give you my kidney, you better know the condition of it. I can't say anything about its prize winning, organic or GMO situation, but for sure it is totally non-grass-fed. Just so you can beware."
"Would you really do it for me?" Maura looked at her, a twinkle of a grateful smile on her face.
"In the blink of an eye, Maura. I mean it. The same way I would honestly do it for my brothers too, even if they are not always nice to me." Jane replied, gently.
"I believe you, Jane. Although genetically it is unlikely you and I would be compatible."
"What? How come? Come on, Maura. We know the Martins don't think you are a Martin. You know most of the Doyles don't even want you to be a Doyle – except for Paddy. I am willing to accept, for the sake of argument, that you might be an Isles. But the one thing I am completely sure of is that you are a Rizzoli. And all Rizzoli's are compatible."
