Season 3 – Episode 7 – "Crazy for You"

"Don't hurt her." Maura plead to the screen.

She knew he could not hear her. But she plead anyway. She didn't believe in God or in any deity. But right now Maura wished she did. She didn't want him to hurt Jane. To burn her with acid like he had done with other victims. To rape her. Or to kill her.

She couldn't close her eyes or get away. As much as it was killing her to watch impotently, at the same time it was impossible for her to suppress the image. Because at least it meant Jane was alive and Frost and Frankie and Korsak were on their way to rescue her.

She felt her knees weakening when she heard the screams of "Police! Police! Police!" as they arrived at the scene.

And she realized she had been crying when the scene of Frankie removing her handcuffs became too blurry for her to see.

Maura heard Jane pleading for Frankie to get her out of there.

She dialed Frankie:

"Maura? We got her. She is fine."

"I saw it, Frankie. You need to take her to the hospital. Now. I will meet you there." and she hung before he could argue.

Maura would leave it to Frankie to convince Jane to go to the hospital. She hoped the fact Maura had been the one ordering him to take her would somehow help.

Maura knew Jane needed to go through a rape kit. She had been drugged and out of it for a while. That animal had switched her clothes, God knew what else he might have done while Jane was unconscious. But Maura would not explain that to Frankie – she also didn't want him trying to explain that to Jane.

Besides, Maura could see the abrasions on Jane's wrists and ankles from the video. She knew Jane went in a panic specially when her hands were held spread that way, it reminded her too much of being crucified by scalpels when Hoyt attacked her.

Maura picked her purse, evidence bags, and the evidence capturing camera, and walked to her car to drive to the hospital.

"I don't need to go to the hospital, Frankie. Maura can perfectly take care of my wrists and ankles." Jane whined, her voice a bit slurred, while Frankie buckled her up on the passenger seat.

"Maura explicitly ordered me to take you to the hospital immediately, Jane. She knows better than anyone you hate hospitals. She must have seen something we are not seeing and needs you checked up. She is meeting us there and you can ask her then, okay?"

Maura arrived to the hospital before Frankie did, and briefed the ER shift supervisor on the situation. He got her a female doctor and a cubicle in standby.

A few minutes later, Frankie arrived, guiding a reluctant and still wobbly Jane by the elbow. Maura went in their direction to help him.

She held Jane's other elbow, the other hand behind Jane's back, and guided her gently to the cubicle.

"Frankie, please go get a change of clothes for Jane from her apartment." And closed the curtains behind them.

"I am fine, Maura. Just a bit dizzy with whatever drug he gave me." Jane insisted, as Maura guided her to sit in the gurney.

Maura had asked the standby doctor to give her a few minutes with Jane before she came in.

"Jane. You need to get your wrists and ankles looked after."

"You can do that back on your house." Jane whined.

Maura put an arm on Jane's forearm to steady her.

"Jane…" Maura sighed. "You need to do a rape kit."

Maura watched as Jane's eyes went wide as saucers, realization finally entering her mind still muddled by the drug Dominique had injected her with.

"Oh God." Maura watched as all color drained from Jane's face. "I'm gonna be sick." Maura had anticipated this reaction, knowing Jane all too well. She pulled a plastic bin from the corner, where Maura had already strategically put an evidence collection bag, placing it in front of Jane while holding Jane's hair back. Maura didn't even flinch. She waited for Jane to stop retching, put the plastic bin to the side – even stomach content was evidence, although from what Maura observed there was little there, Jane had barely eaten anything that day.

Maura wiped her face gently with a clean tissue.

"Jane, listen to me, please. I don't know if anything happened, we began streaming when you were already awake. But since you were drugged and we don't know what happened before you awake, and we know for sure he undressed and redressed you… I think it is better to err on the side of caution and collect a rape kit."

Jane just nodded, tears streaming through her chiseled face, fighting the nausea.

"Will you stay with me?" Jane asked, her voice broken.

Maura squeezed her forearm, tightly.

"I am not going anywhere, okay? Dr. Lindsey?" Maura put a face outside of the curtains.

The doctor approached the gurney where Maura had made Jane sit, bringing with her a hospital gown.

"Jane. She is going to collect blood for the tox screen, so we can test what he might have drugged you with – although I hope Korsak and Frost will find the flask on his house for us not to need to wait for the results. Then we will remove and collect your clothes, take pictures of you for any bruising or wound we may detect, and Dr. Lindsey will do the rape kit. And then she will disinfect and patch your wrists and ankles."

Jane just nodded again, squeezing Maura's hand.

The doctor expertly and quickly collected a few vials of Jane's blood.

Maura gently helped Jane to stand, and collected each piece of cloth she removed, photographing each stage of the process, and satisfied not to see any obvious bruising or wound, except for the angry mark of the site of the drug injection.

"Is this your underwear?" Maura asked, almost sure she recognized this as one of Jane's normal clothing, different than the other items of clothing she had been wearing.

Jane looked down at herself.

"Yes, it is the underwear I was wearing before the abduction."

"It is promising he didn't change you out of your underwear." Maura tried to cheer her up.

"But somehow he knew I had not done a Brazilian." Jane grimaced, gagging.

Jane removed the last piece of clothing – and Maura kept the clothes that he appeared to not have touched in a separate evidence bag than the rest. Jane then put the hospital gown.

"Lay down here, this way." the ER doctor instructed. Maura moved to have her back to the doctor, and to face Jane, who was holding her hand so tightly to the point of hurting.

Maura was angry, but she was controlling her emotions knowing Jane needed to feel grounded right now, and if Maura's calmness could be that grounding territory, Maura would gladly provide it.

Maura didn't need to see the procedure, she was familiar with it, so by the sounds of the ripped containers she knew the ER doctor was almost done. Collecting the kit was a quick process.

"There are no signs of bruising or tearing, and no fluids. You should still run the chemical tests and analysis to be sure, but nothing indicates rape or sexual activity." The ER doctor said, handing Maura the kit in a separate evidence bag.

Jane released a breath she didn't know she had been holding and retched again, crying. Maura hugged her tightly.

"You are okay, Jane. You are safe now. It's okay."

The ER doctor patiently waited until Jane calmed down after another minute, before Maura stepped out of the hug.

"She needs to disinfect and bandage your wrists and ankles, Jane."

Jane just nodded at her.

The ER doctor asked Jane to move her wrist this and that way, to confirm there were no fractures, and guided her to make a few movements.

"There does not seem to be any fracture or nerve damage. The wounds were caused by the friction, and are deep, so some antibiotic cream and dry bandages for a few days."

Dr. Lindsay was saying that as she was expertly lashing the wounds with antibiotic cream and bandaging them tightly.

"It does not seem there is anywhere else you are hurt. How are you feeling?"

"Dizzy. Sick."

"It is likely a lingering effect from whatever drug he used on you. I can get you some IV fluid and we can observe you until the effects are gone."

"Dr. Lindsay. Would it be okay if instead I took her home? I am a doctor as I told you, she will stay with me, and I can observe her and ensure she is hydrated. And I will bring her back at any sign of unexpected development."

"Does that work for you, Miss Rizzoli?"

Jane just nodded, squeezing Maura's hand, too tired to think.

"Thank you, Dr. Lindsey."

Maura poked her head outside the curtains, in time to see Frankie walking back, a bag on his hands.

"Thank you, Frankie. Please take these evidence bags to be processed in the precinct, will you? I will take Jane home with me, you don't need to worry about her."

"Did he… ?" Frankie asked, eyeing for the first time the rape kit and realizing the reason for Maura's urgency in getting Jane to the hospital.

"No, it does not look like it."

She watched as Frankie breathed more easily.

"Take good care of her."

"I will."

She handed the clean clothes for Jane to change into.

Jane changed in silence. Maura held her by the elbow, and walked slowly with Jane back to her car. She opened the door for Jane and waited until she had accommodated her long legs before closing the door for her. It felt odd because Jane was always the one doing this for Maura. Then Maura walked around the car to the driver's door.

Jane closed her eyes tiredly as Maura started to drive.

"How did you find me?"

"Frost got the streaming. I delayed them finding you because when I saw the bed, I was sure he had you in your apartment. I am so sorry, Jane…"

"You had no way to know. Even I thought for a moment I was in my apartment, in my bed." Jane trailed off.

"When we realized, we tried to piece together other parts of the video, and a cast-iron radiator we saw plus your other clues helped us narrow down the location."

"I was not sure if anyone would find me in time this once."

"I was really afraid he was going to hurt you, Jane."

Jane squeezed her hand.

Jane asked a few more questions about the case, that Maura filled her in, as they reached Maura's home.

Maura helped her out of the car, and locked the door behind her as Jane walked in.

"I know she just bandaged me. But I desperately need a shower to wash out his touch out of my skin." Jane looked at herself in disgust.

Maura knew that if she allowed Jane a shower, she would likely scrub herself raw. She could see the tension in Jane's exposed muscles.

"You are too dizzy for a shower, whatever he drugged you with is still in your system. But I will draw you a hot bath so you can soak all the grim and dirty of the day out of you. How does that sound?"

"I can live with that." Jane sighed, tiredly.

Maura guided her gently to the bath, turning on the taps and adjusting the temperature, testing it with her hand, and then spreading deliciously smelling bath salts on the water, watching as the bubbles formed. She put a rolled towel on the top of the tub so Jane could rest her head comfortably.

"Don't worry about the bandages, I will change them by dry ones after your bath is over, okay?"

She waited by the door until Jane lowered herself on the tub.

"Is the temperature okay?"

"Hmm hmmm." Jane replied, eyes closed.

Maura picked her discarded clothes to put them to wash, she knew Jane would not wear them before they had been washed. There were a few clothes from Jane's previous visits that she could make Jane wear to bed tonight.

Maura also put together a sandwich. She needed to make Jane eat something, Maura knew she was running now on a completely empty stomach. Maura wished she would be able to convince Jane to take a mild sedative, but knowing Jane her best bet was to make her drink a beer, so she needed her to eat something first.

Maura came back bearing clothes, that she left by the bed, and opened a sleeve of the bathroom door.

"Hey. Do you want to soak longer?"

Maura observed Jane seemed to be okay, except for her face – Maura could see where she had washed her face repeatedly by the readiness around her mouth, where Dominique had kissed her in the video. And the telltale tears on Jane's face.

"No… I am turning into a prune. If you don't mind, I will just enter the shower to quickly wash my hair."

Maura stepped out, hearing the tub draining while the shower water turned on.

Less than five minutes, Jane was out.

She quickly changed into the clothes Maura left by the bed, and Maura towel dried her hair, trying to prevent Jane using her wrists. Maura brushed her hair as well, letting it lose.

"Stay seated, so I can change your bandages."

Maura removed the wet bandages, the wet residue of the antibiotic cream, cleaned again the wounds, dried them gently with dry bandages, before reapplying the cream and rebandaging both wrists and both ankles.

"You need to eat something."

Jane made a face.

"I made a sandwich. Nothing fancy. But you need to eat something. I can call for delivery, or I can cook something if you tell me what you want."

"The sandwich will be fine."

Maura watched Jane eating without any pleasure. As a prize, Maura opened the fridge and waved a beer in Jane's direction. She watched Jane's face light up. After a day like today, relaxing with a beer would sound like paradise.

"Go get yourself comfortable in the sofa, I will take it there for you, and I will bring my wine."

When Maura reached the sofa, Jane had a blanket over her lap. It was almost as if she had the need to feel protected somehow from any further exposure.

Maura sat with her legs underneath her, and Jane moved her long legs to fit in the space Maura made for her.

Both Maura and Jane gagged thinking of Pike as the "luau kind of guy", before falling into laughter.

Maura knew Jane had avoided and walked around any tentative of more serious conversation. Especially when Jane sensed Maura somber and concerned expression as soon as they sat together. But Maura had seen Jane in the hospital. She knew Jane would need time to process all that happened.

"I can't go back to my apartment." Jane stated, flatly, out of the blues.

"You stay here."

"No, I mean I can't go back to my apartment until I change my bed. That bed is, ucky…" Jane shuddered to the memory.

"I know. But what I said is still valid. You stay here. You will stay here until you get another bed, okay?"

"What about your one-guest policy?"

"Can I tell you a secret?" Maura asked, getting closer to Jane's ear.

"Yeah…"

"It does not apply to you… You are not a guest." Maura stage-whispered, gently.

"Thank you…" Jane whispered back, grateful. "Thank you."
