Chapter 2: The Date

A few weeks had passed since Fuyumi and Hawks had met that night and since then the two had gotten closer. At first Fuyumi thought she'd been imagining things but it felt like everywhere she went she was seeing Hawks. That itself wouldn't be very far-fetched, he was a hero and he could fly plus he was well known and loved so seeing him around often was to be expected. And with her developing feelings for him, that only added to the situation but more than a few times when she'd looked up she'd see him flying over.

At some point though she assumed he'd been doing it on purpose, hoping that she'd notice and it turned out that she was right.

Fuyumi had gone back to the park near her house and a few minutes later, Hawks had shown up. When she asked him about it, he confirmed her suspicions and they'd had a good laugh about the whole thing. That had prompted Fuyumi to suggest that they exchange contact info so they could stay in contact even if they weren't always able to see each other.

That had turned out to be the best idea for them, they texted each other almost everyday, sharing details of their day and what they were up to.

For Hawks it could turn even the most mundane day that much better. After successfully stopping some crime or even mid-flight over the city, the message alerts he'd get from Fuyumi always made him smile.

Did he have feelings for her? Oh absolutely. Was he going to do something about it? You better believe it. After patrolling the city one last time, he changed directions to his new destination.

Fuyumi had just finished eating lunch and was headed back to her classroom when her phone vibrated. She stopped in the hallway to check the message, of course it was from Hawks, she couldn't help but smile.

There's a surprise waiting for you on the playground was all the text said.

The playground? He wouldn't, would he? She thought to herself and noticed the time on her phone, break time was almost over. She made her way outside to the playground. Kids running around, laughing and playing, nothing seemed out of the ordinary.

"It's Hawks!" one of the kids had shouted pointing at the sky and soon enough all the kids had stopped what they were doing and looked up. And indeed there he was in the air, descending until he touched down on the grass. All the kids excitedly ran over to where he was.

The winged hero was soon bombarded with questions and joyful squeals. A lot of the kids were fans of his and getting to see him in person was the best thing that could have happened to them that day.

Fuyumi remained where she was near the entrance and watched the whole interaction. Having his own type of youthful energy, Hawks was happily interacting with the kids, talking with them and even using a few feathers to make some of them float not too far off the ground. The kids were completely awed, he was living up to every single one of their expectations and then some. The happy laughter coming from them warmed her heart.

But unfortunately for them the bell rang meaning it was time to go back to class. The collective sad outcry from the kids actually made her laugh. She walked out to where they were, Fuyumi was still their teacher after all. And as cute as all this was, if she didn't step in they'd never leave.

"Alright everyone you heard the bell, say thank you to Hawks and head back inside."

"Aww but sensei just five more minutes, please." one of the boys had asked and soon enough the whole group was echoing his words.

"Five more minutes will turn into another and another, c'mon now." she said a little more firmly. There were a few more sad faces but they did as instructed, they thanked Hawks and headed back to class… as slowly as possible, turning back every few seconds to wave back and shout how cool they thought he was. They two adults chuckled at their innocent excitement.

When the last student had gone inside they turned to each other.

"So this is what you're like on the job." he had an amused look on his face.

"Aren't you supposed to be on the job now, too?" she faced away from the classrooms knowing full well that the students would be watching this whole interaction, not to mention the other teachers. Hawks followed her lead.

"I won't be long. After you answer my question, I'll be on my way."

"And you couldn't just text me?" now he had her curious. He'd come all this way just to ask her something.

"It's much better asked face to face." he took a step closer, not too close that it would be inappropriate but close enough. There weren't many things that made Hawks nervous but asking out the girl he had feelings for was definitely up there.

"If you're free tonight, would you go out with me for dinner?"

Had she heard that right? Had he just asked her out?

"Dinner? You mean like a date?"

"That's exactly what I mean."

"I'd love to." her face lit up as she answered. She had been meaning to ask him out too but he beat her to it. The times they saw each other and the times they talked on the phone or texted left her wanting more and she was glad that he more than apparently felt the same.

"By the way, why are we facing the street?" He felt comfortable changing the subject and ecstatic that she'd said yes.

She let out a short laugh, "It would just be easier to show you." she turned back to face the classrooms and held out her hand, Hawks looked confused but stretched out his hand. Literally the second her hand closed around his, excited squeals came from many of the classrooms, making them both laugh. "That's why."

"Looks like we've got more than a few spectators." he replied enjoying the attention, and noticed that Fuyumi hadn't let go of his hand and he sure as hell wasn't going to bring it up.

"Having you show up unannounced was always going to be a spectacle, actually even if it was announced it still would've turned out like this." she thought over it for a bit and was actually glad he'd come in unannounced. It the kids and staff knew that Hawks was coming in for a visit, no one would be able to focus.

"So what does this make us right now?" he said with a smirk.

"A potential story." she looked at her phone again, it was about time for her to head back inside plus she didn't like that mischievous gleam in Hawks' eyes. He was definitely up to something so it would be in her best interest to end his plans before they could even begin.

"Then I wonder what they'd say to this," he'd raised their still connected hands with a teasing smile, which made Fuyumi blush and she immediately released his hand. "Is this going to be a common occurrence?"

"I forgot we were still holding hands, no need to make a big deal out of it." she tried to play it off but the fact that couldn't look him in the eyes was telling.

"Of course you did." he couldn't be anymore smug if he tried. He spread out his wings in preparation to leave. That was enough teasing… for now at least. "I'll see you tonight." he winked at her before taking off.

Fuyumi watched him fly away and after a few seconds he was completely out of view. She let out a sigh. He'd always been playful but that was one of the things she really liked about him.

The only problem with it this time, was that going back into the school building meant she'd have to face a ton of questions from her colleagues.

"Is there something going on between you and Hawks, Todoroki-san?" the teacher from the class next door had asked her. It hadn't even been ten minutes since Fuyumi had come back inside. Tamaki-sensei had caught her on her way back from the faculty room fetching the worksheets she needed.

"We're good friends is all." she answered with a polite smile but knew this was the first of many questions to come.

"But he came all this way to see you, not to mention the hand holding. Seems like something a man in love would do." Tamaki-sensei gave Fuyumi a knowing look before heading back to her own classroom.

A man in love…

Those words stayed with Fuyumi. And she suddenly remembered that she had a date with him tonight. Could he really be? Granted they had been out together a few times but those were always so casual. They'd had lunch together a few times, would meet up and talk at the park but he'd never formally asked her out before like he'd done today. He'd even made the effort to seek her out and ask her in person instead of their usual form of communicating over Line. He'd even said so himself, this was a date. This was different from the usual.

Did this mean his feelings were different too?

Oh, to be a fool in love. It was just after five p.m. Hawks was currently on the rooftop of a building watching his sidekicks hand over the last member of a group of thieves, that had robbed a convenience store, to the police. He couldn't get his mind off his upcoming date with Fuyumi and it was less than an hour away. They'd agreed to meet up at six at a restaurant neither of them had tried before. It would be a new experience for them both, and he was currently going through some of the pictures they'd taken together whenever they'd met up.

Finally back home, Fuyumi took off her shoes at the entrance and went inside. Noting the other pairs of shoes already there, she knew her brothers were home. Shōto had gotten permission to come home for the weekend.

She dropped off her stuff in her room before heading down the hall to Natsuo's. Fuyumi knocked before entering.

"Natsu, can you take care of dinner tonight? Dad's coming home late and I'm going out soon."

"Sure, no problem." He answered while still typing away on his laptop and then paused. His sister's words finally registering. He looked up from his laptop. "You're going out? For work?"

"Uh, no actually, I'm going on a date." it sounded strange saying it out loud, especially to her brother.

"A date! With who?" it wasn't that Natsuo thought Fuyumi would never date, it just never crossed his mind. "Okay it's none of my business but just, wow."

"Is it really so strange?"

"Yes, well no, I didn't mean it like that. It's just, I guess I'm happy for you. You're always taking care of everyone and making sure we're okay, it's nice to know you're doing something for yourself."

His answer had kind of caught her off guard. But he was right about it in the long run. Fuyumi's whole life had been about putting her family first, her own happiness came as an afterthought and directly related to how well the family was functioning at any given point.

"I didn't think you'd be paying such close attention." she replied with a sad smile and wrapped her arms around herself.

"Like I really had a choice. Growing up the way we did taught us to be painfully observant. But in this case, it's a good thing." he noticed her posture hadn't changed. She was overthinking something or doubting whether she should go out or not, as if she didn't deserve it. She'd always carried more guilt than she had any business carrying at all. All this time and she was still so self-sacrificial, well not on his watch. Not when she had the chance for something beautiful that was completely hers. He removed the cushion he'd been leaning on and threw it just past her head.

"Natsu!" it worked, snapped her out of her thoughts. She threw it right back at his head.

"No more doom and gloom, you've got a date right, so go get ready."

The two siblings smiled at each before Fuyumi turned and left. At that moment Shōto emerged from his room. Natsuo caught his attention just as he'd passed by his open door.

"Hey Shōto, did you know Fuyumi has a date tonight?"

The youngest sibling looked from his older brother to his sister, his eyebrows raising only slightly.

"I didn't but enjoy yourself." he'd responded simply before walking past to his actual destination, the kitchen.

"Seriously Shōto, that's it?"

"I think that's a much better reaction to finding out your sister has a date, Natsu." she called from down the hall.

"Shōto doesn't count! It takes a lot to actually surprise him."

Fuyumi got changed into her chosen outfit, a cobalt blue puffy sleeved blouse and jeans and black sandal heels. She kept her hair loose and wore silver stud earrings.

Xxx

Just after six in the evening, the city was starting to light. The streets were bustling with people enjoying the night as well as people still commuting home from work. Fuyumi was just about to enter the restaurant when she saw Hawks land not far away from where she was. He'd apologised for keeping her waiting but, she'd waved him off since she'd only just arrived herself.

As they sat at their chosen table and looked over the menu, they were spoiled for choice. So many different options and Fuyumi found it funny how Hawks essentially wanted to try them all.

"I didn't know you were such a foodie." she commented while her chopsticks hovered over their various selections of meat. They'd settled on ordering a large platter with different grilled and fried meats, along with rice, salads and side dishes.

"I like trying different foods as much as possible, and it just so turns out that I have a lot of favourites." he replied as if he were being interviewed before taking another portion of fried chicken.

As they ate, whenever one of them tried something they really liked, they'd offer each other a bite. That had resulted in them feeding each other a few times.

Dinner had been sensational, afterwards they got ice cream and headed to the nearby park, but this one was much larger than the one near Fuyumi's house, it even had a lake. And that's where they'd settled, on a bench overlooking the sparkling waters.

The night sky was reflected in the water making it look like the stars had fallen to the ground. It really was a beautiful sight. Fuyumi rested her head on Hawks' shoulder and he'd put his arm around her, everything felt so natural with him, so comfortable.

Hawks felt just as at peace. Honestly, if he'd gone back in time and told his younger self he'd be on a date with his friend turned crush and this happy, he probably wouldn't have believed himself. There were too many things he was burdened with to ever even consider something like romance and love. He let out a breath.

"What's the matter?" she looked up at him.

"It's nothing."

"I know a thoughtful sigh when I hear one, what's on your mind?"

"I'm just really happy, tonight's been incredible." He held her hand.

"I agree." she rubbed her thumb over the top of his hand. "I can't wait for the next time."

"Next time?"

"Of course, one date is nowhere near enough." she chuckled seeing his face light up. "And considering how nervous I was coming into this, it turned out better than I thought."

"You were nervous?"

"I was, but when I thought about how much I wanted to see you, it all faded away." she returned to leaning against him.

Oh that was surely going to leave a mark on his heart forever. Everyday Fuyumi gave him more and more reasons to want her in his life forever, that moments like this would last forever.

At the end of the night, the two of them were walking up the street to Fuyumi's home, hand in hand.

"I would've been fine getting back home from the train station. You really didn't have to walk me all the way back home." she said while lightly swinging their joined hands.

"I wanted to make sure you got home safely." they made it to the gate. The two of them stopped and looked at each other. Fuyumi stepped right in front of him and wrapped her arms around him. In his arms was her favourite place to be.

"I swear hugging you never gets old." he held her tighter at that point, always happy to have her close to him.

"Then let me try something new." he saw her look up with curiosity.

His golden eyes looked into hers as he took her hand and brought it up to his lips. Fuyumi's breath caught in her throat as she watched him. Her heart skipped a beat when he'd kissed her hand and even after he'd held it to his chest.

"Thank you for tonight." his voice was so gentle.

After that beautiful gesture, Fuyumi and Hawks said goodnight and Hawks took after after watching Fuyumi go inside.

Taking off her shoes at the entrance, Fuyumi was still recovering from what had just happened. Her heart was still racing and when she'd cupped her face in her hands she'd felt the heat in them. Had she been blushing that entire time?

And he'd thanked her for an incredible night but she was the one feeling grateful. Everything he did made her smile and if this was what happiness felt like for herself, it was about time she opened herself up and let herself feel all these new feelings.

She was certain she'd had a crush on him before but now Fuyumi believed she was falling in love.

Aren't they just the cutest together? I really love writing them. Anyways that's ch2 done, ch3 is partially done so that should be out soon but I'll see how that goes. Likes and reviews are always appreciated.

Well that's it from me:
