Wow. Thank you all for the reviews and the encouragement. You have really made my day. There were some questions in the comments that I would like to answer really quick. Firstly, there will be a happy ending, I promise. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy belong together. Second, there was no sexual assault, only a beating. What exactly happened will be shared later by a witness. Third, the whereabouts of the letter will also be shared by the witness.
I hope you enjoy.
Once the matter was explained to the assembled members of his staff and concealment stressed Mr. Darcy and his cousin moved downstairs. As they came down the stairs the front door opened as his sister and her companion entered. Knowing his sister would notice the increased staff in the family wing he knew he had to tell her. After greeting her he asked her and her companion to join him for a few minutes in the study. The discussion was similar to the one that he had with Mrs. Taylor a short time ago.
"Is she going to die?" was his sister's first question.
"We do not know, Georgiana." Colonel Fitzwilliam said. "We are hopeful that she will wake soon."
"I pray she does."
"We all do." Mrs. Annesley said. "If there is anything I can do to help, sir, please let me know. I am no stranger to a sick room."
"Thank you, Mrs. Annesley." Mr. Darcy said. "We are hoping to keep Elizabeth's presence out of public knowledge. We do not know who harmed her and what they may do if they discovered that she did not arrive where they planned to send her. Nor do I want to risk her reputation."
"Will she be returned to her family in London or Hertfordshire?" Georgiana said. "Surely they must be worried for her."
"The doctor said she should not be moved."
"That may be so but you must inform them she is here."
"I worry the exposure a letter from me might get if I write her father. I do not know her family in London but I will do all I can to locate them."
Georgiana nodded then her eyes widened.
"Miss Bingley knows her family in London. She called on them." she said quickly. "She called while you were in Kent. I asked her about her visit since you spoke highly of the two ladies but she did not say much. She would have their address though."
"Brilliant." Colonel Fitzwilliam said. "Now we need only call and get the information from the lady."
"We must get the information from her without rousing her suspicions." Mr. Darcy said. "Miss Bingley knows of my interest in Elizabeth. I do not think she will give me the information if we ask for it."
"Then we will trick it out of her."
"How do you plan to do that, Richard?" Georgiana asked.
"I do not know yet."
The clock in the hall chimed.
"We have time to plan." Mr. Darcy said. "It is too late to call today."
"Miss Bingley would not disparage you if you called later than was fashionable."
"She might not but it may raise her suspicions or her expectations. She would happily tell all her friends that I called on her so late in the day. Elizabeth is safe now. I will call at Bingley's tomorrow. There is another matter I need to discuss with him that may make getting the information from Miss Bingley easier."
"What do you mean?"
"Bingley is in love with Elizabeth's sister and from what Elizabeth told me she loves him."
"Miss Elizabeth's sister?" Colonel Fitzwilliam said. "That is who you separated Bingley from."
"It is."
"It is no wonder she said she was ill and did not come to tea."
"What do you mean?"
"I told her you were a kind and loyal friend. I gave her the example of you assisting Bingley in avoiding an imprudent marriage. I am sorry, Darcy."
Mr. Darcy stared at his cousin for several moments with a dark look on his face.
"I told her it may not have been Bingley..."
"It was Bingley." Mr. Darcy said abruptly. "I did not think Miss Bennet loved him. I was wrong and I will make amends."
"I am sure she will be happy to hear that you have done so when she wakes." Colonel Fitzwilliam remarked. "I think she would be equally pleased to know that you have forgiven me my loose lips and not locked me in your wine cellar for penance."
Mr. Darcy managed a smile.
"I would never lock you in my wine cellar, Fitzwilliam. If I did it would quickly become in desperate need of restocking. Not to mention your overwhelming desire to sing when inebriated."
"I was not the only one singing, Darcy."
"If you tell Elizabeth that I might lock you in the stables for a week."
"Women love men who can woo them with a song. Aunt Rachel said that is how Father gained Mother's attention." Georgiana said. "I am sure Miss Elizabeth would be equally charmed."
"That is not a discussion for the present or present company. How I woo a woman is of no concern to any of you." Mr. Darcy said, his face reddening a bit.
"I knew you must love her."
"I do love her, Georgiana."
"Then I am sure I will like her for a sister very much."
The rest of the day passed quietly. Georgiana was taken to see Elizabeth by her brother. After a few moments she shooed her brother out of the room then took a seat in the chair next to the bed.
"Miss Elizabeth, we have not been properly introduced. I am Georgiana Darcy." she said taking Elizabeth's hand. "I am sorry that your own sisters are not here to comfort you. William said he will try to get your uncle's address from the Bingleys in the morning. While he is gone I will sit with you. I picked up a new book today and I would be happy to share it with you."
Mrs. Taylor entered.
"It is time for the young lady's medicine."
Georgiana laid Elizabeth's hand back on the bed then rose.
"I will see you tomorrow." she said then turned to Mrs. Taylor. "Please take good care of her. She is very important to my brother and I."
"Of course, Miss Darcy."
Georgiana hugged the older woman then departed. Mrs. Taylor gave Elizabeth a dose of the medicine the doctor had recommended then set down in the chair by the bed. It was a few minutes later that she heard a scratching noise. Looking at the figure on the bed she saw Elizabeth's finger twitch. The digit moved twice more then stilled. Mrs. Taylor decided to mention it to the doctor when he came again. She did not think it was a good sign. She had known a girl in her youth who had fallen from a horse and hit her head. After the accident the girl had been plagued with muscle twitches and seizures. She had only lived a year after her fall. Silently she said a prayer for her young charge.
