Iris7124: I literally say that in this chapter lol! We just try to make each other laugh and hope everyone else thinks we are funny too lol. We actually love him too (but Klaine forever of course lol) Blaine is kind of silly in this one, but he will get his act together! No worries! Thank you!
Day two.
Someone was saying Kurt's name, rousing him from his slumber. He had lain awake for far too long the night before, analyzing everything that had happened that day and wondering what the hell was going on with Blaine. He had a secret and Kurt was going to get it out of him, one way or another. He would break.
Stretching his arms above him until they brushed the ceiling, Kurt let the covers slip down over his bare chest and into his lap. It had gotten a little hot the night before, so he had forgone the shirt and sleep pants, opting for just his boxer briefs. He blinked his eyes open to find an empty cabin except for Blaine who was hanging off the narrow ladder he used to climb into his bunk. The guy was staring at him open-mouthed with a frightened expression. He held two paper cups in each hand.
Kurt smacked his lips. "What?" His eyes flew wide with fear. "There's not another spider is there?"
It took a few more seconds, but Blaine finally closed his mouth. He shook his head and released a shuddering sigh. "No. No spider. I saw… A— A pigeon…."
"A pigeon?"
"Yup. Those little bitches are everywhere."
Kurt listed his head to the side in tired curiosity. "And you just saw one?" He absently scratched at his chest.
Blaine's eyes fluttered down, then up, then to the ceiling. The jerky motion nearly knocked him from the ladder. Not having his hands free, he had to grab the ladder with the crooks of his arms in panic. "I've brought you coffee! Let's get you dressed! Artie and Sam went on to breakfast so they could be first in line for pancakes. You know how they feel about the pancakes." He laughed crazily and handed Kurt a cup before taking it back and replacing it with the other one. He descended the ladder, almost falling down. "Now, how about clothes? You have some somewhere…"
Kurt peered over the raised edge of his bunk. "Blaine? Honey, are you okay? How much coffee have we had?"
"Just high on the fumes of nature and camp!" He downed his coffee and grinned up at Kurt. "Wow, that coffee was fucking hot. I'm gonna go… find more pigeons! Don't come out of here without clothes!" With that, Blaine practically ran outside, the door slamming behind him.
"Okaaaaay…" He climbed down and got ready for his day.
Kurt was slightly concerned about his friend, but he could be a little odd sometimes. He was just going to focus on the fact that he was happy to be at camp. So maybe Coach Sylvester took over and was being a little bit insane? He got to be with Blaine and his other friends, do what he loved, and show Kent off a little. His boyfriend was so sweet and pretty fun, even if he wasn't always the quickest. He was extremely easy to look at too. So maybe it wasn't exactly the same as his crush on Blaine. Was. Definitely was. Past tense. He was getting over Blaine. With Kent. He was over Blaine. Obviously.
Plus, it seemed like Blaine was headed that direction with Trent. It irked him a little. Not because of his expired feelings, but because he was happy with Kent. As previously stated. He was just concerned that Blaine would let someone like Trent who wasn't right for him push him into something he wasn't ready for. But he and Blaine had promised to be honest with each other, even if the truth hurt. So he was in a conundrum. Maybe that's why Blaine was acting so odd. He realized Trent had a crush on him and it was making him uncomfortable. Well, he would help.
Kurt answered a text back from his dad asking how things were going before stepping out into the leaf-dappled morning sunshine. Blaine was waiting there with Kent and they looked… Well, Kent looked like he always did which was like a happy Great Dane puppy and Blaine seemed standoffish, which was unusual for him. He normally was very friendly, so Kurt was unsure why he was acting like he would rather be anywhere else. He would ask him about that later.
"Good morning," he told Kent before giving him a sweet kiss on the lips.
Kent reciprocated happily and took Kurt's hand. "Good morning, babe. I was just asking Ka-Blaine-o here what kind of coffee you drink so I can bring it to you tomorrow."
They started off to the canteen, Blaine beside Kurt with his arms crossed.
"And I was telling Kent-icky that you like it very particular so it's best left to me," Blaine said in a soft voice that anyone else might mistake for sweet, but Kurt recognized as his passive aggressive voice. What the hell was going on?
Kent threw his head back and chuckled deeply, slapping at his thigh. "Kentucky. Classic. Good one, Ka-Blaine-o!"
"Yup. Exactly what I said."
Kurt turned to shoot his friend a questioning glare, but Blaine was staring off at the trees. Had they not gotten off to a great start? Blaine had been weird today. Maybe Kent said something that Blaine took the wrong way. He could be kind of sensitive. Until he could get to the bottom of it, Kurt shrugged the weird tension off.
The building that housed the cafeteria was bustling and loud, full of kids excited about the new program and what that could mean. Kurt, Kent, and Blaine all shuffled into line and got their food. They found most of their friends at a table already and slid into the seats being saved for them. Everyone seemed in good spirits except for Quinn who glared daggers at Rachel. The brunette didn't look up, but found her breakfast very interesting. Another thing he would have to figure out.
"Pancake day!" Sam cheered happily and Artie joined in.
"Pancake day!" Kent yelled with them, eyes sparkling with joy. Sam and Artie just nodded in approval.
"He gets it," Sam told Artie who nodded slowly.
"Dude, I love pancakes!" Kent said as he shovelled a huge bite in. Being athletic as he was, he ate a lot of carbs to keep up his bulk. Kurt had watched in amazement when they went to a buffet one time during basketball season and ate plate after plate.
Brittany smiled over at him from across the table. "What's your favorite food? Mine is unicorn poop. If I can ever find a unicorn, I just know it's poops would be my favorite."
Most of the table just quietly acknowledged Brittany as the eccentric person she was and went on. Especially with the threatening look Santana panned over the table, daring anyone contradict her girlfriend.
Kent had stopped mid bite and was staring at her. Uh oh. He was probably about to say something to make Santana cut him. "I had this really yummy grilled shark once when I went deep sea fishing with my dad and step mom and then that night I had a dream where I got to kiss Catherine Zeta-Jones and Antonio Banderas from The Mask of Zorro. I'm almost one hundred percent certain it was the shark that did it. So I'll go with that."
The entire table stared at Kent with expressions ranging from confused to disbelieving. Brittany was just nodding in bisexual agreement.
"Oh my damn." Artie pushed up his glasses. "He's like a boy Brittany."
Kurt glared at him. "Shut up, Artie!"
Santana lifted a hand, staring at Kent in curiosity. "No, no. I think he's right. I think… I think I'm a little bit attracted to him…"
"Hey," Blaine's voice sounded strange. "So, theories on the end of summer musical?"
The spell was broken at that and everyone launched into a discussion about what it could be. Kurt looked at Blaine who was poking at his food with a frown.
"I hope we get to do Cats," Brittany said predictably.
"I think Guys and Dolls would be fun," Artie said. "I could totally pull off being a gangster."
"No!" Rachel announced dramatically. "We should absolutely do—"
"Funny Girl." Everyone else but Kent and Quinn said in annoyance. Quinn just kept eating, viciously stabbing her food while Kent looked around at everyone with wide eyes.
"Whoaaa! How did you all know that?" he asked.
"It's what she says every time," Brittany informed him as she fed Santana a bite of fruit.
Kent grinned at that and swiveled to Kurt, who was still wondering what was going on with Quinn. "You should totally feed me too!"
Kurt choked on his coffee. Blaine and Kent both started beating on his back at the same time.
"Good thinking, Ka-Blaine-o! We can each take a lung! Don't die, Kurt! Go towards the light!"
"Stop calling me that," Blaine hissed through gritted teeth.
Kurt pushed them both away. "Stop," he coughed out, lungs burning and eyes watering. "I'm fine!"
Santana leaned on her propped up hand and watched them shrewdly. "Oh my… This will be an interesting summer."
Kurt was about to demand she explain herself when a air horn sounded, announcing Coach Sylvester. The Cheerios sat up in their seats. It was reflex that Kurt did also, but the other three really straightened their backs.
"Hello theatre dorks," Sue said into her bullhorn. It squealed as she turned to an out of breath Mr. Shuester who looked like he had run the whole way there. She shrugged. "Today is the first official day of camp. Now I have been informed that I cannot force you to only ingest protein shakes, but from here on out, you will be eating only meals designed to turn you into my perfect machines."
"Sue is not in charge of food," Mr. Shuester said into his own bullhorn. "Don't worry."
The Coach narrowed her eyes at him, but continued. "We will also be holding auditions for the best, most attractive, least annoying people to have parts in whatever masterpiece you will most definitely butcher."
"She means the most qualified," the Glee director interjected.
Sue shoved her bullhorn down and they squabbled quietly where the kids couldn't hear.
"I'm going to get a lead since I'm the best," Rachel muttered across from Blaine.
Kurt held himself back from rolling his eyes.
Quinn smiled dangerously at her. "We will see who gets the lead. I think it's time for me to have a win, don't you think?"
Surprisingly, Rachel's mouth clicked shut and she put her attention back on Coach Sylvester.
"As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, which are we surprised? He is building my deformation suit for me. Anyway, this weeks activities will be focused on auditions and vocals."
This announcement led to everyone buzzing until Sue lifted her horn again. "I'm sure you're about to wet your undies to know the play—"
"Musical," Will corrected with his horn.
Sue's eye twitched, but she didn't look away from the children. "The musical will be… The Phantom Menace."
Pretty much everyone in the room looked quite confused except for Sam and Artie who looked ecstatic. That couldn't be a good sign.
"No, it's The Phantom of the Opera," Will said and the room exploded.
"I don't care," Sue replied.
"I'm trying for lead," Kurt and Rachel said at the same time.
"You can't be Christine!" Rachel said petulantly.
"Watch me," Kurt replied just as petulantly.
"He might not be able to, but I can," Quinn said, green eyes flashing. "Don't you think I'd be a lovely Christine, Rachel?"
"Leave me alone, Quinn!" Rachel snarled. "I'm so sick of you—"
"Shut up!" Sue screamed and the room silenced. "Now, after you finish shoving slop into your disgusting mouths, head to the auditorium for auditions." She shoved Will away as she walked past him. He growled and went after her.
"Okay, so who's doing what for auditions?" Kurt said excitedly, palms flat on the table. Breakfast had been completely forgotten by the masses.
"Obviously—" Rachel began, but Santana cut her off.
"No one cares. Quinn, should we audition together? You with me and Brittany?"
Quinn shrugged. "Whatever."
Santana smiled and it was… nice? What the hell? Why was Santana being nice? It was unnatural! Kurt shrugged. He had more important things to figure out.
Kent put his head on Kurt's shoulder. "Babe, we should audition together! Maybe we can be the lead romantic roles and get to kiss all the time."
Kurt turned to him and smiled at his goofy expression. Kent took the opportunity to rub his nose with Kurt's, causing a chorus of cooing to erupt from the table.
A loud bang made everyone whip around to Blaine who had slammed his fork down on the table. He looked around sheepishly. "Sorry! Saw a roach."
Everyone screamed and leapt from the table except for Blaine and Kent.
"Dude, don't hurt the little bugs. They just be out here, bugging. You know?"
Blaine gripped his fork, his knuckles turning white. "Yeah. Bugging."
After breakfast, everyone went straight to auditions. The girls spilt off, whispering together with the exception of Rachel who wouldn't speak. She showed Kurt on her phone that she was saving her voice. Kurt had rolled his eyes at that, taken Kent's hand, and headed to the auditorium. Blaine was walking quietly behind them and Kurt wondered with some guilt whether or not he was giving Blaine enough attention. They should have a break after auditions, so Kurt decided he would talk to him then.
Before they got into the building, Rachel grabbed Blaine's arm. He had been uncharacteristically quiet the whole way there. She showed him her phone and he quirked up an eyebrow. "You want me to audition with you?" She nodded emphatically.
Blaine frowned at Kurt. "But Kurt and I always audition together…"
The breakfast digesting in his stomach churned, making him feel ill. Blaine was right and he didn't want to disappoint his best friend, but Kent had also expressed interest in auditioning together. He didn't want to be a bad boyfriend. He felt torn, especially when he had no idea why Blaine was acting odd.
Kent swung their joined hands. "You should totally audition with your buddy. It's tradition, right?"
"Best. Friend," Blaine ground out.
Rachel shoved her phone she had been typing furiously on in Kurt's face. He jerked back, wondering how she was more obnoxious without talking.
It's perfect! I'll audition with Kent, you audition with Blaine! -Rachel
Kurt didn't really like that, but he didn't like the idea of her auditioning with Blaine either. And he didn't want Blaine's feelings to be hurt, so he agreed.
"Go easy on him," Kurt told her quietly. "He's soft."
She waved it away, immediately searching through her phone for the perfect song.
Kent just smiled and smacked a kiss on his cheek as Kurt gave him an apologetic look. Blaine waited quietly, smiling at Kurt with half of his face as they walked in together. Poor Kent was reading as fast as he could as Rachel typed out her plan.
The auditorium was crowded when they got inside, already divided into the characters they were trying for. Rachel grabbed Kent's sleeve and pulled him along behind her, leaving Blaine and Kurt alone.
"Hey, I had a quick question—" Kurt started.
"We really should decide what song we are doing," Blaine said at the same time.
Kurt nodded. Of course. Now wasn't the time to bring up personal stuff.
Blaine watched him. "What did you want to ask?"
"Same thing," Kurt said with a little laugh after licking his lips. "We should do the same song since we're going to audition together."
Blaine nodded, looking towards the stage. "Music of the Night? It's your go-to song anyway, right?"
Kurt nodded, a warmth spreading in his chest at how Blaine always remembered stuff like that. "Yeah it is. Do you know it? Or should we go over it?"
"Let's work on it while we wait."
They awkward tension between them finally eased as they practiced. Blaine seemed to shake off whatever cloud was over him and smiled again. Things were almost back to normal when Kurt's name was called. He went up before Mr. Shuester and Coach Sylvester who were sitting as far away from each other as they could possibly get at the small table they shared. Sue remained silent, wordlessly watching him with her glasses ear piece in her mouth.
Will nodded encouragingly at him. "Anytime you're ready, Kurt."
Kurt smiled, took a deep breath, and belted out the song. He felt calm and confident as he usually did when the spotlight was on him and he was the main focus. His voice was loud and clear and he hit all his notes. He had this. The Phantom was as good as his. He looked down into the chairs and saw Blaine cheering him on, a bright smile on his face. It took him longer than he felt comfortable admitting that he didn't even see Kent beside Blaine for a second. His boyfriend leaned over to say something to Blaine which made him wrinkle his nose. But Kurt didn't let that distract him. He had to nail this part. If Mr. Shue and Sue were deciding parts, he would probably not be getting Christine. So Phantom it was. He purposely sang in a lower register, but hit one high note just to show off.
When he had finished, a lot of the kids clapped in appreciation, none harder than Blaine and Kent. Kurt bowed and turned to face Sue and Will.
His choir director began. "That was very impressive, Kurt! Thank you!"
Sue just nodded and continued to write something on her notepad.
Kurt thanked them and descended the stage, not completely sure how he did, but remaining hopeful.
Next was Blaine and Kurt settled into the audience to cheer him on just like he had cheered Kurt on. He was magnificent, of course. Kurt was so wrapped up in watching Blaine that he kind of forgot Kent was sitting next to him until he poked his shoulder.
"Think they will let me have my phone up there?"
"Huh?" Kurt was baffled. He watched Blaine out of the corner of his eyes.
"So I don't forget the words?" He wiggled the screen full of lyrics in front of Kurt. "For my audition song!"
"Oh! Right, uh I guess you can ask?" He turned back to the stage.
Kent frowned. "Right. Gotta go to the bathroom. Be right back." He kissed Kurt's cheek. His boyfriend barely looked at him as he slipped towards the back.
He was only gone a minute before Trent plopped down beside Kurt. "Hi!"
Kurt glanced at the Warbler. "Hey."
"Can I ask you a question?"
Kurt didn't think he would like this. "Go ahead…"
"Blaine is… Well, he's single right?"
Kurt actually looked at the boy now. His cheeks had gone a little pink. "Single?"
"Yeah." He smiled shyly at him. "I've always kind of thought he was cute, but honestly I thought he was with you with how much he talks about you. Like, I would have guessed he was in love with you."
Kurt was floored. But Trent was wrong. His laugh edged on bitter. "Uh, no. We get that a lot. But we've never dated."
Trent seemed relived. "Okay. Cool. Um, so you know if he's seeing anyone? Or if he likes anyone?"
Blaine had finished amid generous applause. Will and Sue reacted to him the same way they had reacted to Kurt. "I don't think so. He would have told me," Kurt replied stiffly.
"Okay! That's great. Well, thank you." He slipped out of the chair, greeting Kent along the way.
Auditions lasted the rest of the morning. Rachel sang part of Think of Me from the musical and did exceptionally well. Quinn sang a very slow and sad version of Call Me Maybe that had Kurt nearly in tears. She seemed so heartbroken up on stage, like she would never be happy again. He knew he would have to get to the bottom of it soon. But first, he needed to deal with Blaine. They finally got a short break about an hour before lunch, but the boy had disappeared. Kurt looked for him, kind of paranoid about Trent cornering him. He could ask him out. Trent seemed sweet. But how did Blaine feel? He would have said something if he liked Trent that way. Right?
Kent was currently preoccupied with Santana, Brittany, Sam, and Artie. They all seemed to like him, even Santana strangely who typically didn't like anyone. And why wouldn't they? Kent was a sweetheart. Which is why Kurt wanted to know exactly what Blaine's problem was.
He searched the foyer, eyes scanning all the kids milling around or lined up at the bathrooms. His phone ringing in his pocket pulled his attention and he ducked into a quiet corner to answer it. He smiled at his father's name.
"Hey, Dad."
"Heya, kiddo." Machines whirred on the background, drills whined, and the grease-covered radio crackled out some old rock song. He could practically smell it. "How's camp?"
"Oh, pretty much as expected. How's the shop?"
"As expected. You got any idea why Finn's moping around? Didn't even want cake when I brought it home yesterday."
Kurt frowned. That might explain the girls bickering. "Not exactly, but I'm trying to find that out." He heard his dad grunt in response and heard the click of a ratchet. "Hey, can I ask you something?"
"Shoot."
"Okay, so Blaine's been acting kind of weird…"
A chuckle. "Well, the kid can be odd sometimes. Remember when he made that pasta family portrait of us?"
"Hey, you said you liked it!"
"I didn't say I didn't like it, I said it was odd." He could tell by the tone his dad was trying not to laugh.
"It was thoughtful," Kurt said loyally.
"Sure, buddy. You gonna tell me what's wrong?"
Kurt sighed. "It's just that, well he seems like he hates Kent."
"What?" His dad sounded genuinely shocked. "But Kent's such a sweetheart. A bit of a goober, but sweet."
"I know, right? I haven't gotten a chance to talk to him yet, but I just need advice."
The line was quiet save for the garage noise. Kurt waited, certain his dad was just giving his issue some thought. Finally, he said, "Kurt… I know you won't want to hear this, but you think Blaine might have feelings for—"
Kurt knew exactly where he was going with that. "No! Don't you dare go there! It's not like that and if you put that in my head, I will way overthink it!"
His dad had been the only person he told about his feelings for Blaine other than Mercedes. They were the only ones he trusted with this.
"Fine, fine. Just a thought. Okay, let me ask you this: how much time have you spent with Blaine versus your boyfriend?" He paused for the words to sink in. "Maybe he feels a little left out."
He considered this. "Maybe. But we've only been here like two days!"
"But neither of you have ever had a boyfriend before so maybe he thought it would be different," his dad countered. "Like I said, it's just a thought."
Kurt agreed and they talked for a few more minutes about other things. He told him goodbye when the warning came, his advice still heavy on his mind.
He finally found Blaine after the break. He seemed fine with no explanation of where he had been. Next was lunch with much of the same as breakfast: Quinn and Rachel being icy, Santana making snarky comments, and Trent flirting with Blaine who would barely respond as he was staring off out of the window. He didn't feel like that was the moment to ask what was wrong with him, but it was driving him crazy.
"Babe? Yooohoo! Is someone's head in the daisies?"
Kurt startled and turned to Kent who was smiling at him. His boyfriend booped his nose.
"Oh. Sorry, just thinking about… auditions."
"Aw, you'll get it, I'm sure!"
Kurt smiled into the kiss Kent pecked on his lips.
"Isn't the expression head in the clouds?" Trent said as he scooted even closer to Blaine. The teen didn't seem to notice.
Kent shrugged. "Maybe, but when I was a kid it was daisies because I was always laying on the ground looking up at the clouds."
Sam stopped throwing bits of bread at Artie who was trying to catch them in his mouth. "Wouldn't that still be in the clouds?"
Kent scratched at his head, his shiny hair falling back into place automatically. "But my head was in the daisies on the ground…"
Kurt shook his head. Sometimes he had no idea how Kent's brain worked.
It wasn't long before lunch was over and they were quickly ushered to the open field next to the canteen. They usually had a water balloon fight there towards the end of the year. Sue Sylvester was waiting for them with a scowl twisting her mouth and her hands on her hips.
By the equipment neatly lined up and the formation she had them in, Kurt pretty much knew what was about to happen here. And it would be unpleasant. He had been doing this program for the last several months.
"Alright, losers!" She prowled the front line of the campers. They were standing in long rows, the sun bearing down on them and making sweat drip down their backs. Kurt knew better than to complain though. That would only make things worse. "I've been informed I can't make you fight to the death tournament style to build your stamina and impress me, so we will have to find other ways. We are going to turn you into perfect machines instead of flabby dorks! You will go until you die or I tell you to stop!" She glared into the eyes of the kids like a general of an army. "If you wear your legs down to nubs, you will keep going on bloody stumps until I am satisfied! Am I understood?"
"Yes m'am!" the campers chorused.
Blaine glanced over to Kurt. Just by his eyes, Kurt could tell he was thinking she was insane. Kurt nodded, the slightest bob of his head to confirm. They widened their eyes when she nearly made a guy pee his pants and then had to suck in their lips so they wouldn't laugh.
It was pretty brutal. They did exercise after exercise, jumping and running. Then push ups and wall sits and squats, the Coach yelling at them the entire time like they were worthless scum. Kurt kept catching eyes with Blaine, sweat dripping into their eyes and making faces at each other. He noticed Kent doing pushups while Brittany sat on his back and that did some things for him. Sue screamed at Kent, furious she couldn't make him cry. Kurt was pretty sure he was having the time of his life.
Sue finally was forced to let them go when Mr. Shue stormed up and started yelling at her. He had apparently been locked in one of the bathroom closets for the last few hours and claimed she did it.
Dinner was more subdued, everyone feeling tired from their long day. With weary bodies, they trudged back to their cabins so they could gather their things to take to the showers.
Kurt was glad for his friends since communal showers usually invoked terror. He knew here he had nothing to worry about. It was just him, Artie, and Sam since Blaine said he wanted to call his parents in privacy and Kent reluctantly agreed they weren't quite to that level yet in their relationship.
"That workout was insane," Sam said as he carelessly stripped off his shirt and tossed it into a pile of his clothes. "But I'm gonna be ripped by the end of this summer!"
Artie was peeling his own clothes off and depositing them in a sack. "Dude, you are already ripped. Kurt, it's no wonder you look as good as you do if that's what the Cheerios do all the time."
Noting the others weren't even looking at him, Kurt started stripping as well. "It will definitely do you good. It's hard, but Sue knows what she's doing. I was kind of hoping for a break this summer though."
One of the showers squeaked on and water spattered on the tiled floor. "Well, I'm here for it." Sam's voice came from the stall a few spaces down. "Man, Finn is going to be so jealous!"
"I'm going to get Tina back," Artie muttered from another stall.
Kurt shook his head, knowing full well that Tina was very happy with Mike and Artie might be pining in vain. He knew a thing or two about that.
He stepped into his shower, his flip flops smacking against the tile. He turned the knob quickly so the water could warm his chilled skin. A few creaky turns and the old but well maintained head spurted out water. He sighed into the steamy stream, the heat soothing his sore muscles. It was when he went to grab his body wash that he realized he left it outside the stall on the sink top. He must be tired. Artie and Sam were busy, chatting about something Kurt was pretty sure was football but hadn't really been paying attention to. Maybe he could just dart out and grab his stuff without them knowing? It should be fine. He left the water going, intending to run out and back in. He didn't even grab his towel as he stepped out of the stall.
Something that sounded like a cat being smothered by a goose scared him so he whipped around. Sam and Artie screamed at the noise, both peeking their wet heads out of the stalls.
Blaine was standing near the door, face bright red behind his hand he had covered his eyes with. He was fully clothed and holding his tote full of toiletry items, his clothes and towel tossed over his shoulder.
"I— I— I'm sorry, Kurt! I didn't— You're naked!" His voice had jumped up a few octaves.
Kurt could feel his own face burning. When he had realized Blaine was there, he had jumped back into the stall and hid his body from view. "No, I'm sorry! I left my stuff out there and I didn't know you were there!"
Artie and Sam deflated.
"Is that it?" Artie rolled his eyes and his head disappeared. "I thought someone was being murdered."
"Dude, it's just a butt and a penis. We all have them." Sam continued scrubbing his sudsy hair. "Want me to show you mine?"
"No!" Blaine and Kurt chorused together.
Sam shrugged and ducked back into his shower, leaving the two boys staring at the floor.
Blaine held his caddy at his waist and scratched his head. "I wasn't trying to stare at you! I didn't mean it…"
Kurt laughed, his embarrassment ebbing away at Blaine's obvious mortification. "It's okay. I'm the one who flashed you. You okay?"
"Yeah. Yup. Fine." He shuffled towards his own stall, waddling oddly.
Kurt frowned. "Why are you walking like that?"
"Stubbed—" Blaine's voice cracked as he disappeared from view. He cleared his throat. "Stubbed my toe. All's well! Carry on… washing your body."
Kurt was about to do that when he remembered what started this whole ordeal. "Uh, hey Blaine? Would you mind handing me my stuff? I left it out there."
He could have sworn he heard Blaine sigh and whisper something to himself about someone killing him, but he heard the clap of Blaine's shower shoes and soon his own shower tote came into view dangling from Blaine's hand.
Kurt thanked him and took it so he could finish his shower.
Obviously Sam and Artie finished first since they started first and were also such boys that they didn't have a whole skin regimen like Kurt. So that left him alone in the bathroom when he heard them head off to the cabin. Or he thought he was alone when he left the shower stall (fully dressed this time) and Blaine was standing at the sinks and squeezing his hair dry.
"Hey," Kurt said, feeling kind of shy for some reason. Blaine in pajamas was, er used to be, one of the most adorable things ever. He just looked so soft and cuddly that Kurt wanted to snuggle him. So glad he was over that.
Blaine gave him a soft smile in return and pulled out his toothbrush and paste. "Sorry again."
Kurt shook his head as he fished out his own toothbrush. "I told you it's my fault. I'm sorry."
Blaine smiled around his toothbrush and they cleaned their teeth in companionable silence. Once they finished, Blaine stepped cautiously towards Kurt. "Hugs?"
"Hugs," Kurt agreed and they embraced. Blaine smelled like his soap and laundry detergent and was so warm. The hug maybe lasted a little too long, but Blaine coughed and pulled away.
"Uh, so we're okay?" Blaine asked Kurt as he looked at him in the mirror and wiped his mouth with his towel.
This was his opportunity. They were super tired, but he had to ask Blaine now or he wouldn't be able to get any sleep. "We are," he said slowly as he moisturized. "But, can I ask you something?"
Blaine swallowed hard and licked his lips. "Sure." He didn't sound very sure.
"This is kind of awkward, but I guess seeing me naked is more awkward," he laughed as did Blaine, but his face began to flush again. Kurt focused on his own face. "So, what's up with you and Kent?"
It was as if Kurt had shocked Blaine when he said his boyfriend's name. "What, uh… what about him? He's your boyfriend and it's fine. Everything's fine."
Kurt pointed at him in the mirror. "That! Right there! You act all weird when he's around or mentioned. And earlier today you seemed like… Well you acted like you hated him." He looked back to Blaine who was staring down at the dripping faucet in front of him.
"I…" he combed his fingers through his shiny wet curls. "It's complicated…"
Kurt snapped the lid back onto the bottle. "Simplify your thoughts please."
Blaine blew out a deep breath, his cheeks puffing out at it as he turned and leaned on the sinks. "I guess I don't really get him."
"What does that mean?" Kurt tried not to get defensive, but some people did make fun of Kent because he sometimes said odd things, but he was incredibly kind and sweet. He didn't deserve to be made fun of. He thought Blaine would have known better. "He's not stupid. He just… sees the world a little differently. A lot like Brittany."
Blaine paled at Kurt's tone. "Hey, no! It's not like that." He growled and threaded his fingers together behind his neck. "Okay, so you know how you and Finn didn't get off on the right foot?"
Kurt arched a brow and put a hand on his hip. "So… you have a crush on my boyfriend and you're going to try to parent trap your parents into living with his parents so you can live with him and make him fall in love with you?"
Blaine blinked a few times. "Noooo. I mean, like when you guys had to figure out each other and how you… fit into things?" He finally met Kurt's eyes, his searching for something. "I'm jealous of him. Really jealous."
So his dad had been correct. Blaine wasn't sure of his place. Kurt let his defenses fall and he stepped towards Blaine. The teen looked terrified for a second, but he stood up. "I get it. And I'm sorry."
"Sorry?"
"Yeah. I should have talked to you about the auditions before. I kind of blindsided you."
"No, listen. I—"
Kurt slid closer and put an arm around Blaine's shoulders. "No, you have every right to be upset. You are my best friend and we have traditions. Just because my boyfriend is here doesn't mean I am going to ignore my best friend. That would be wrong:"
Blaine sighed and rested his head on Kurt's shoulder. "Yeah. Okay."
Kurt turned his head to Blaine. "So, we're okay?"
Blaine smiled weakly. He must have been so tired. "Of course."
They made their way back to the cabin then after gathering their things. "You have to work on being nicer to Kent though," Kurt informed Blaine.
"I know," he muttered.
"He was so excited to hang out with you. You want to hear something funny? He even had a little crush on you before, but he thought we were together."
"Hilarious."
"Hey." He elbowed Blaine. "There is room for both my boyfriend and my best friend. Now that I know how you feel, I'll be more conscious of that."
Blaine heaved a huge sigh. "Thanks."
Artie and Sam were already snoring loudly when they crept into their cabin and set their things aside.
Kurt climbed up the ladder to his bunk while Blaine slid into the bottom one and they got settled as quietly as they could. Crickets and frogs sang to each other outside, accompanying their sleeping friends. Kurt lay there, willing himself to sleep. His body was exhausted, but his mind was still racing over the events of the day. He had no idea how long he laid there, but it felt like hours.
Blaine shifted a little below him.
Kurt stared at the ceiling. "Blaine?" he whispered. "Are you awake?"
"No."
"Fine. I was going to tell you a secret, but now I guess I won't."
Blaine was a sucker for secrets. Kurt counted to three in his head before Blaine huffed. "Fine! Tell me!"
"Okay. So, you know how Quinn and Rachel are fighting?"
"Why no! I hadn't noticed they seem ready to rip out each other's throats."
Kurt ignored his sarcasm. "Well, I talked to Dad today and he said Finn was upset too. I think he might have cheated on one with the other."
The bed creaked as Blaine must have rolled over. "That would make sense. Should we try to intervene? I don't think I can handle the tension all summer."
"Maybe. We should keep our ears and eyes open. To help of course. I think we should ask Santana about it."
Blaine hummed. "Or maybe we shouldn't ask Santana about any secrets. She doesn't seem reliable. Like, if she says anything about me, she's totally lying."
Kurt narrowed his eyes at his ceiling. "What are you talking about?"
"Nothing. Just tired. We should probably try to get some sleep so we can weather Coach Sylvester's training tomorrow."
Twisting on his side, Kurt cuddled his pillow. "Okay. Night."
"Night."
He was quiet for a few more rounds of snores before scratching at his pillow case. He had one more thing he needed to get out.
"Blaine?"
"Who needs sleep? Yes, Kurt?"
"You know… As far as Trent is concerned…"
"What about him?"
"If you like him, you should give him a chance. I think he might like you. But you shouldn't just go out with him because he likes you!" He added quickly at the end.
The silence was loud. Kurt almost thought Blaine had fallen asleep, but he finally spoke. His voice was husky for some reason.
"Kurt, I promise I don't like him that way. He's nice, but… I just don't. I'll let him down easy if he asks me out."
Kurt felt a strange relief at that. He told himself it was because Blaine wasn't letting himself be pushed around.
"Okay. Good night."
"Good night, Kurt."
He was almost asleep when he he had one more question. "You'd tell me? If you liked someone?" he slurred a little sleepily.
Blaine didn't answer. He must have been asleep. Soon Kurt fell under sleep's spell too.
So this was a little shorter, but we will pick up with Blaine and how the poor guy is doing next chapter lol
