It was a cold, rainy day in Angeles. King James was conducting business as usual, with his middle child and only son, Prince Sebastian shadowing his every move. Sebastian was a fine boy, loved by the public, but more importantly he had a mind for politics, not something that every child had. Especially not James's youngest, Kinleigh. He pushed the thought of his youngest out of his mind, focusing on the budgetary meeting at hand. The minister of finance paddled on and on, as if he couldn't simply read the report in front of him. Eventually, the meeting came to an end. No one moved until King James himself stood, then his advisors and son stood as well. James left the boardroom and made his way to his own private office, with his son following behind him. It was near noon, and James knew that Kinleigh would be waking up soon. He had much to discuss with her, as she most likely knew. Just that morning he had been greeted by the sight of tabloids, which featured Kinleigh partying at an all ages club. James was clearly less than thrilled about her distasteful activities, but what caught his attention most was the picture of her smoking a cigarette. He had been furious at the sight, but assured his wife that he'd handle it. Now, he had to follow through.
"Fetch your sister, now," James ordered his son, practically barking the order.
"Of course, father." Sebastian said. He ducked his head in a quick bow and left the room. Of course he had read the magazines and knew exactly why his father wanted to see his younger sister. He had been just as caught off guard by it as his father had, but mostly he had been disappointed, couldn't Kinleigh just behave for once? He walked up the three flights of stairs that led to the royal apartments and went directly to his younger sister's room. He knocked a handful of times and waited. Eventually, Kinleigh opened the door, wearing her pyjamas and a housecoat. Well at least she felt well enough to change last night, Sebastian thought. Kinleigh leaned against the doorframe and glanced up at her brother, she was still in last night's make up and her hair was dishevelled.
"Father wants to see you," Sebastian said, glancing down at his seventeen-year-old sister. "He's not very happy."
Kinleigh shrugged. "I'll be down in a minute."
"Why do you do this?" Sebastian questioned. It just didn't make sense, they had everything anyone could ever want. Everyone dreamed of being royalty, and here she was, throwing it all away.
"Like you care." Kinleigh mumbled as she closed the door. Sebastian frowned at this, his sister had never closed the door on his face before. But then again, her behaviour was getting more and more unpredictable. Whatever, Sebastian thought as he walked away, he had more important matters to attend to, he was the future king after all.
Once Kinleigh was dressed and presentable, she made her way to her father's office. Sure, she had kept him waiting for an hour, but she didn't care. He had all day to call on her and only decided to do so at noon, so did he really care? She sighed as she knocked on the door to her father's study, then opened the door and stepped inside.
"It's about time you graced me with your presence," James scoffed from behind his desk. He waved his daughter closer and Kinleigh slowly walked towards him. She stood in front of his desk, bracing herself for the worst.
James slammed a magazine down on the desk, on the front cover was a picture of Kinleigh in a rather revealing dress with a cigarette pressed between her lips. "Care to explain this?" James demanded harshly.
Kinleigh shrugged. "It's just a cigarette, dad…" she trailed off.
"Just a cigarette?" James repeated incredulously. "Do you have any idea how bad this looks? First, you sneak out after curfew dressed like a common whore and now you're smoking? Do you even think Kinleigh?" he roared.
Kinleigh looked down at this and wrapped her arms around her waist. "I'm sorry, everyone else was doing it-"
"And if everyone else were to jump off a bridge would you just blindly follow them?" James snapped. "I've had enough of your excuses! You will learn how to behave!"
"May I go now?" Kinleigh asked, tired of her father's verbal abuse.
"No, you may not." James said angrily, pinching the bridge of his nose. "Your marriage is not even secured yet, I can afford no more mistakes on your part."
"Wait, you're already arranging my marriage?" Kinleigh asked, shocked. She glanced up at her father, who stared down at her with raged filled green eyes.
"Of course I have, you're a princess, even if you don't care to act like it. You will marry foreign royalty and that is final!" James said, shutting down the argument before it could even begin.
"Who?" Kinleigh asked.
"Does it really matter?" James questioned. "And that's not what we're here to discuss, Kinleigh, stop changing the topic."
"I said I was sorry!" Kinleigh exclaimed, what more did he want from her?
"Don't you dare use that tone of voice with me, young lady!" James warned through narrow eyes. "Until further notice you are restricted to your room. Do I make myself clear?"
"Yes, father." Kinleigh mumbled.
"Furthermore, you will issue a public apology for your actions, claim that it was peer pressure and that you will not do something so reckless again, because trust me, you won't." James added as he crossed his arms.
Kinleigh merely nodded again.
"Get out of my sight." James ordered with a dismissive wave of his hand. Kinleigh turned on her heel and left the room. She rushed to her room and slammed the door shut. I hate him, she thought, even though she knew she didn't mean it. Even though all they did was argue, Kinleigh loved her father and wished he'd actually pay attention to her, maybe then she wouldn't have to act out.
Hello there lovelies!
I was going to wait until I was further along in The Spare, buuut I was too excited by this fic!
See my profile for the form and family dynamics - as they can be confusing.
But basically, there's a whack ton of characters I'm looking for - Sebastian's wife, Kinleigh's betrothed and also her love interest, Sebastian's lover(s), and anything else you can think of!
If you have any questions about the fic or about characters you wanna submit, please PM me here or DM me on discord. I'd recommend that you pitch me your idea first in case that slot has been taken!
ALSO, this is not a Selection SYOC where there will be a Selection, this is more like an expose on royal life!
Thanks for reading!
