The Six Wild Swans
Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a widowed king named King Fussy. His kingdom prospered as the land was clean and fresh. Nobody dared to litter or vandalise the kingdom. Everyone lived in peace and harmony. However, King Fussy had six sons and one beautiful daughter.
Their sons' names were Tickle, Happy, Strong, Quiet, Noisy, and Bounce. All of the princes had unique personalities, but they do get along most of the time. Tickle, the eldest prince, was a playful and mischievous prince, who liked to play games and tickle anyone for amusement. Happy was a cheerful and caring prince that everyone found his smile and laugh contagious. Strong was a brave and protective prince, who was notorious for archery, despite being stronger than his bow and arrows.
Quiet was a calm and reserved prince that prefers to read books and be in the forest, rather engage parties. Noisy was a rowdy and loud prince that enjoyed parties and playing music, despite many trying to shush him. The youngest prince, Bounce, was so energetic and lively that he couldn't help but bounce around with such joy and happiness.
However, the most beautiful child of all was the king's only daughter, Chatterbox. She was sociable, outgoing, and loves to make new friends. She got along with most people, but she enjoyed being with her brothers the most as they made her happy.
The siblings would play games often like tag and hide n seek, and they often make their widow father happy. The children were spoiled with golden books with fine papers, and their pens were made of pure diamonds. They all have their own books that can come alive and entertain them. They have everything that anyone could desire.
Despite this, King Fussy grew lonely as he lost his beloved wife when she gave birth to Bounce. The King never blamed his youngest child for his wife's death, but he felt like all the children deserve a mother in their life. All their life, Chatterbox was the mother figure to her brothers.
With that, the king decided to remarry to a new woman. Her name was Naughty. What many didn't know was that she was an evil witch, and when she soon discovered that her husband had seven children, she grew resentment towards them. She despised her stepchildren and she knew they could get in the way.
…
One day, Queen Naughty watched by the window to see the children playing in the garden. She glared at them until her husband came, "What's wrong, my dear?", King Fussy asked as he held her hand.
Queen Naughty put on a fake smile and replied dryly, "Nothing! It's just that…"
She paused for a moment before she came with a witty question, "Darling, do you think our daughter is good enough?"
"What do you mean?", King Fussy raised his eyebrow.
Queen Naughty replied, "What I meant to say is that do you think our daughter is proper enough?"
King Fussy watched his daughter as Chatterbox was tagged by Tickle and received a tickle. He looked back at his wife and spoke gently, "I think she's proper. She has good manners, she's obedient, and she's intelligent."
"Yes, but she doesn't know the basic or hard skills.", Queen Naughty remarked.
King Fussy paused as he began to think before he sighed, "I suppose you're right, but what should we do?"
"I say, we should take her to a country, so she can learn how to be a real woman, and when she's eighteen, she can return home, so she can find a proper suitor.", Queen Naughty smirked.
King Fussy thought harder until he sighed, "I suppose you're right. Besides, it can help her mature better."
Queen Naughty was pleased with herself as she knew she got one child rid off. With that, she knew that once her stepdaughter was gone, she needed to get rid of the six stepsons, and that she could have everything for herself and for herself only.
…
The next day, the young Princess Chatterbox was informed by her father that she would move to a far country for the next couple of years. Chatterbox was upset, but she knew she must obey. With that, she farewelled her brothers, and left for the country nearby.
The queen didn't shed a single tear as she watched the long gone princess with an evil smirk. Now, all she needed to do was to get rid of the six princes. She tried to think hard and hard until she came up with a devious yet very clever plan to persuade her husband.
…
Everyday, she would speak poorly about her stepsons to her husband, saying how rude, selfish, and cruel they are. She even lied about how they treated her with no compassion. At first, King Fussy didn't believe it until he slowly fell into her webs of lies and deception as he began to believe her. He was so disappointed in his sons, and couldn't bear to see them.
…
One day, the six brothers were in their room, doing their own activities. Quiet was reading his book while Noisy was playing his lute. Strong was fixing his bow while Bounce jumped on his bed. Tickle, however, looked at the window sadly as Happy approached his older brother, "Hey, are you okay?", Happy asked with a small frown.
Tickle shook his head sadly, "No. I miss my sister so much."
Happy's smile turned into a frown as he sighed, "I know, and I miss her too."
"Why did she have to leave?", Strong asked.
"It doesn't make any sense!", Noisy shouted.
"That's because our father believes it's for the best.", Quiet spoke too quietly.
"What?", all but Bounce asked simultaneously.
"I think he said because it's best for our sister.", Bounce answered.
"I think it's not fair!", Noisy growled.
"She shouldn't have leave in the first place!", Strong agreed.
"I just want my sister back!" , Tickle cried.
"Me too!", the five younger brothers chimed.
Suddenly, the wind blew the door open violently as Queen Naughty stood at the door. The six brothers shook in fear as they all cuddled each other. The queen smirked as she growled, "Your father said you're such a disappointment and commands all of you to go!"
The six brothers cried in horror as the look upon their stepmother's face was horrifying. They ran to the balcony, where they were cornered. Queen Naughty approached them as she growled, "I don't want to see you all again! For now on, you will turn into speechless birds that fly in the sky!"
With that, she cast the spell on the six princes, and one by one, they all turned into six white elegant swans with a golden crown on their heads. The swan brothers couldn't speak as they looked upset as they flew faraway from the castle. They would never be seen or heard again for many years.
…
Time passed and eighteen year old Chatterbox was sent back home, unaware her brothers were gone. She was more beautiful than ever as her hair was gold as the sun and her skin was pink as the rose. She arrived at the castle and everyone greeted her right away. She knew she was back home and can be with her family once again.
However, when Queen Naughty saw her beauty, she grew jealous of her, and she decided to make a nasty plan to fool her husband. There, Queen Naughty greeted Chatterbox, "Hello, my beautiful daughter! I missed you so much!", she lied.
"Really?", Chatterbox asked.
Queen Naughty hummed as she grinned, "Yes, and since your father is waiting for you, I decided to give you a makeover!"
Chatterbox thought about it before she smiled, "Oh, thank you so much! I haven't been able to wear makeup or wear fine clothes for years! I have to work on the farm to milk cows, make clothes, and learn how to cook, which is fun!"
Queen Naughty rolled her eyes before she guided her to the bathroom.
There, she cast a spell on her stepdaughter to make her face covered with warts and dirt that can't be washed by freshwater. She looked more hideous when she messed up her hair. Unaware what her stepmother was doing, she didn't look in the mirror as she did trust her.
Once she was completed, Queen Naughty guided her stepdaughter into the throne room. When Chatterbox entered with a big smile, she was immediately met with her father, who gave her an ugly glare, "What is that hideous woman doing here?"
"W-what?", Chatterbox stuttered, "Father, it's me! Chatterbox!"
King Fussy frowned, "You can't be! You look nothing like her!"
Chatterbox gasped in horror before her father summoned the guards, "Guards! Guards! Get her out of my sight!"
There, the two guards grabbed her as Chatterbox cried, "Brothers! Brothers! Please help me! It's me, your sister, Chatterbox! Please, help!"
"Oh, please.", Queen Naughty smirked, "The princes have been long gone for years."
Chatterbox couldn't believe what she had heard as the guards threw her outside of the castle. The gate was shut as Chatterbox couldn't go back home. Feeling alone and abandoned, she decided to travel on her own to find her long lost brothers. She knew her brothers too well, and she knew they would believe her words, and would support her. However, being alone made her scared and lost.
…
The full moon came as wolves howled under the moonlight. The owls hoot while the crickets make noises. Chatterbox started to feel hungry and scared as she whispered to herself as tears escaped her eyes, "Oh, brothers… where are you? I'm so scared… and alone, and I'm… so… tired…"
With that, she collapsed in the middle of the forest, exhausted from travelling on her own. However, what she didn't know was that she was discovered by a woman that found her on the ground. She took the tires princess back into her cottage and allowed to rest on her bed.
…
The sun rose as the rooster crowed. Chatterbox slowly opened her eyes as she got up and rubbed her eyes. Once she was fully awake, she realised something. She wasn't in the forest, "W-where am I?", she asked herself.
"Finally! You're awake!", boomed the voice of a woman, "Now you can get off my bed and sit on this chair!"
Chatterbox was both confused and upset as she saw a blue circle woman, pointing her finger at the wooden chair. Chatterbox looked at the woman and frowned, "Excuse me? I just got up, and I'm sorry if I somehow intruded into your house."
The woman shook her head, "No. I rescued you. You could have been eaten by wild wolves. You were very foolish to sleep in the forest. So, be grateful that I have found you!"
Chatterbox was more puzzled as she felt grateful that she rescued her, but the way she treated her was very poor. With that, she got off the bed and spoke with tears in her eyes, "Thank you."
The woman noticed her crying as she felt slightly guilty. She gulped as she tried to change the subject, "My name is Bossy! What's yours?"
Chatterbox froze as she looked at Bossy before looking back at the ground. She didn't want to tell the truth, "I'm just… no one."
Bossy frowned, "Nonsense! You must have a name!"
Chatterbox knew she wouldn't leave her alone until she got an answer. There, the princess took a deep breath as she responded, "I'm Princess Chatterbox. The daughter of King Fussy. Well… I was once before he kicked me out, accusing me of lying…"
Bossy watched as Chatterbox began to sob. Bossy's serious demeanour changed into a soft one as she felt bad for her. There, she put a cushion on the wooden chair for the princess to feel comfortable as she guided her to the chair, "Here, have a seat."
Chatterbox got up and sat on the chair as Bossy sat on a more fine chair. The princess didn't complain, but she was too upset. There, Bossy asked her, "Tell me. What happened from beginning to end?"
The princess sniffed as she took three deep breaths before she replied, "It's a long story, but to make it short, I was sent to a country for years until I was eighteen. I was looking forward to seeing my family again, especially my six brothers, but when I got there, my father accused me of lying and had me kicked out. I-I also discovered that my brothers were missing! Now I'm trying to find my brothers!"
Bossy listened carefully as she pitied the princess, "I'm sorry to hear that. I can tell you are telling the truth."
"How? My father called me "hideous"!", Chatterbox cried.
Bossy grabbed a mirror as she showed her reflection, "It's your eyes that spoke the truth. You are indeed the princess.", she spoke gently.
The princess touched her face and began to cry, "That could've explained why I look ugly! I think my stepmother did something to me! I don't know why she did this to me! Why!"
Bossy patted her back, "There, there. There is a cure to it."
Chatterbox gasped in surprise as Bossy grabbed three ingredients, three rose petals, six daisy petals, and saltwater. There, she approached the princess as she washed her face carefully. Once it was done, Chatterbox's beautiful face came back as she looked at the mirror, "Oh, thank you, thank you, thank you! Thank you so much!"
Bossy smirked, "Nah, don't thank me, but you have six brothers, right?"
Chatterbox hummed as she nodded, "Yes! Have you seen them!"
"No.", Bossy replied sadly.
The princess felt hurt as she looked down, "But I have seen six swans with a golden crown on their heads.", Bossy added.
Chatterbox's eyes went wide in surprise as she asked, "Six swans with a golden crown?"
Bossy hummed, "Yes, and they come once every six months, but I do know where they live."
Really?", Chatterbox gasped, "Where?"
"At the beach's shore at the west side.", Bossy answered.
Chatterbox knew that the swans must be her brothers, right? She was desperate to find her missing brothers, but the question was, how could she get there? She would get lost easily. Luckily for her, Bossy had the solution to her problem.
…
Outside of Bossy's cottage, Bossy put a twig in the flowing river, "This twig will guide you the way to the beach."
Chatterbox gasped in awe as she thanked Bossy, "Thank you! I will never forget you!"
With that, Chatterbox followed the twig's direction. Bossy waved as she roared, "Make sure you stay safe!"
"I will!", Chatterbox waved back as she started her journey and her quest, her quest to find her brothers.
…
As she passed many forests and fields for hours, the princess didn't stop as she knew she must find her brothers. The twig went at her pace, which she finds so amazing. It was as if the river and the twig knew she needed help. Perhaps they did know. However, she was exhausted, but she didn't stop, not even for a minute to catch her breath.
…
Finally, at sunset, she arrived at the beach. However, to her disappointment, no six swans were there. She frowned as she sighed sadly, "It's too late. I lost them!"
There, she collapsed onto the sandy yellow sands as she sobbed. Her tears landed into the saltwater water as she felt like she lost her brothers. Suddenly, she heard honking noises at a distance. She wiped her tears and looked up. To her surprise, six swans with a golden crown flew towards her. Chatterbox got up as she cried in joy, "Brothers! Brothers! It's me, Chatterbox! Your sister! Brothers! Brothers!"
With that, the six swans circled around her before landing on the ground. Once they landed, they all transformed to the brothers that Chatterbox recognised. Tickle, Happy, Strong, Quiet, Noisy, and Bounce gasped in joy as they ran to their sister, "Sister!"
They embraced their long lost sister as they all had tears of joy, "I miss you so much!", Tickle cried.
"We thought we lost you!", shouted Noisy.
"I'm glad you're okay.", Strong added.
They all laughed and cried as they missed each other dearly. Chatterbox was glad that her brothers were there for her, and she had their love and support. After the embrace, Happy asked her, "What happened, dear sister?"
…
That night, they all shared their stories, "I see. She got you out.", Bounce frowned.
"Yes, and my mother made me look hideous to fool my father. I honestly thought she was genuine, but I guess I was so foolish to believe her.", Chatterbox sighed.
"At least you didn't get turned into swans!", Noisy shouted.
Quiet shushed his brother, "Shh, not so loud."
Chatterbox asked, "So, you all got turned into swans?"
"That's right.", Happy hummed.
"We can only be our true selves, but only from sunset to dawn.", Strong explained.
"Oh, I wish I could have helped you! I wish I had the power to fix this!", Chatterbox sobbed.
"Don't worry, we've been used to this.", Tickle assured her as he used his long arm to wipe her tears.
"Hey, why don't you come with us?", Quiet suggested.
"Pardon?", Chatterbox asked politely.
Quiet sighed as Bounce explained, "He said, you can come with us!"
"Yeah, to another land. It's beautiful.", Happy smiled.
Chatterbox liked the idea but she sighed, "I wish I could come, but I can't fly."
"That's okay!", Tickle winked, "We will make a basket just for you. We will carry you there."
With that, they all decided to get some rest. Chatterbox was happier than ever to be with her six brothers again, yet she felt terrible for them as their stepmother cursed her brothers to be swans only at daytime. She wanted to do something, but question was, how could she fix the problem?
…
The next day, the six swan brothers were flying as they carried a rope that was connected to a big basket. Chatterbox rose inside of it as she laughed and giggled, "Hahahaha! The wind tickles me! Wow, the ocean is so blue and calm, and the sky is brighter than gold! Oh, thank you so much, brothers! Now my wish for flying has come true!"
It was a long journey and despite having to carry their sister, they didn't care as they wanted her to come with them, away from the misery of their old home. Tickle, Happy, Strong, Quiet, Noisy, and Bounce looked at their sister and smiled. They knew she would be happier there, and she wouldn't have to suffer anymore from the wrath of their stepmother.
…
Once they arrived at the land from the other side, they landed on the ground near a cave as sunset came. There, the swans turned to their true selves. Chatterbox approached them, "Oh, thank you so much! But, I feel so bad for you. You must have been exhausted from the trip. I honestly wish I could repay you!", she sighed.
"That's alright.", Strong beamed, "We are just glad you can come with us, sis."
Noisy yawned loudly, "I say we should sleep inside the cave!"
Quiet frowned, "But what if there's bats or insects?"
However, nobody listened to him as they couldn't hear him as they went inside the cave. There, they made a bonfire to keep themselves warm from the harsh cold wind. With that, Tickle explained, "We are here, but we are not just there yet. We will continue tomorrow."
"Yeah, we need some sleep.", Strong yawned.
"Sweet dreams, sister.", Bounce smiled.
"Goodnight, brothers.", Chatterbox smiled as she lied down and closed her eyes.
"Goodnight, sister.", the brothers chimed as one by one, they fell fast asleep.
…
Chatterbox woke up to see she was in a blue room with what looked like stars everywhere. She was so confused until she heard an innocent laugh. She looked around until she spotted an orange figure with yellow nose, brown hair, and had wings. Chatterbox was amazed by it as she was left speechless, "Who are you?"
"I'm Magic the Fairy.", she replied, "I know you wanted to help your brothers, and there is a way."
"Really?", Chatterbox gasped.
"Yes. All you have to do is to knit six shirts for your brothers, and they must be made out of stinging nettles.", Magic the Fairy explained.
"Stinging nettles!", Chatterbox gasped.
"Yes, and although it may be painful, it will take a lot of courage and sacrifice to save your brothers.", Magic the Fairy explained before she gave a warning, "But beware, if you ever speak a word while making these shirts, your efforts will be undone. So, you must never speak a word until you complete the shirts. Understood?"
Chatterbox nodded, "Yes."
"Good luck then, my child.", Magic the Fairy winked as she flew away.
…
Chatterbox woke up from her dream, and saw her brothers still asleep. She knew what must be done as she got up and walked outside of the cave. There, she began to gather some stinging nettles. However, it was so painful that she began to cry, but she knew she must do it for her brothers."
What's more, she would find it challenging to not speak a word. She must complete it without any words. Once she gathered some stinging nettles, she began to step on it to soften it until it was good enough to be knitted into a shirt.
…
As the days flew by, all the brothers could do was to watch and help gather some stinging nettles for her. They were so worried about their sister as she was suffering from the pain she endured, yet she didn't speak a single word, "Poor sister.", Tickle frowned.
"She's suffering so badly.", Quiet added.
"I hope she can get better.", Strong spoke as the brothers agreed.
…
A week passed and Chatterbox completed three four shirts. She was nearly done when a young king was riding in his horse along with the guards. The young king saw her beauty and fell for her. There, he began to approach her, "Excuse me. What are you doing here all alone?"
Chatterbox spotted a blue rectangle man with a big blue nose and a unibrow as he wore a crown and a cape. She blushed the moment she saw him. However, before she could speak, she remembered the fairy's warning. All she could do was look away and blushed.
The young king apologised, "I'm sorry if I scared you. I didn't introduce myself. I'm King Grumpy, and you must be?"
Chatterbox thought until she grabbed a stick and wrote her name on the dirt. King Grumpy read it as he gasped in awe, "Your name is Chatterbox. That's a beautiful name.
The princess blushed as King Grumpy explained, "Say, why don't you come to my palace. I promise I'll give you a fine room, and you may bring your stuff."
Chatterbox thought about it before she nodded. King Grumpy smiled as he hopped her on his horse as he guided her back to his kingdom. The six swan brothers saw this as they flew to follow them. They will never leave their sister behind, and they wanted to make sure if the young king would treat her well.
…
At the castle, Chatterbox was given a fine bedroom as she continued to knit. She felt more comfortable rather than being outside but whenever she saw her brothers, she would wave at them to acknowledge them. She giggled as she continued her quest to save her brothers from the terrible curse.
…
"What? You love her?", cried a purple egg shaped man with a yellow nose and some hair.
"Yes, Bishop Stubborn. I love her. I never met someone who's that honest, kind, and beautiful all at the same time.", King Grumpy blushed as he tried not to smile.
"Her honesty is cheap!", Bishop Stubborn roared, "She's nothing but lies!"
King Grumpy frowned, "How would you know?"
"That's because you found her near the shore!", Bishop Stubborn protest.
"And?", King Grumpy asked.
"And she's a witch!", Bishop Stubborn roared.
"No, she's not.", King Grumpy rolled his eyes.
"Yes, she is!", Bishop Stubborn shouted.
"What makes you think she's a witch!", King Grumpy raised his eyebrow with a frown.
"Because I'm wearing a mitre, not you!", Bishop Stubborn replied.
"I don't care what you're wearing!", King Grumpy growled, "She's not a witch!"
"Fine then! Believe in such fantasy, but I will prove you wrong! I will show you she is guilty!", Bishop Stubborn shouted.
"She's innocent!", King Grumpy shouted back.
"Her innocence is cheap!", Bishop Stubborn stormed off.
King Grumpy frowned as he rested his fist on his cheek, "Dodo bird.", he muttered under his breath.
…
Three days passed, and Chatterbox completed the fifth shirt when she realised she ran out of stinging nettles. She gasped as she knew she needed to collect some. The only place she could get it was at the cemetery near the church. With that, she snuck out and gathered some stinging nettles.
What she didn't know was that Bishop Stubborn watched the whole thing as he gasped in horror. She must be a witch to his eyes. What kind of girl goes in the dead of night, picking some stinging nettles at the cemetery. It just doesn't make any sense. With that, he decided to tell King Grumpy on what he had witnessed.
…
King Grumpy was awoken by the lamp's light as he rubbed his eyes and groaned, "Stubborn? What are you doing in the middle of the night?"
"I have proof that Chatterbox is a witch!", Bishop Stubborn explained.
King Grumpy groaned as Bishop Stubborn explained, "Why would some person go in the middle of the night to the cemetery? Huh?"
The young king was puzzled, but before he could speak his words, Bishop Stubborn roared, "Guards! Lock Chatterbox in the dungeon!"
The guards obeyed as they went off to find Chatterbox. King Grumpy glared at Bishop Stubborn, "You don't tell the guards orders! I do!"
"I don't care! I proved to you that she's a witch!", Bishop Stubborn huffed.
…
Chatterbox was starting on her sixth and final shirt when the guards stormed in and dragged her to the dungeon. There, she was locked in all alone as she continued her mission to save her brothers. She wanted to tell everyone her story, but she knew that one word would mean, she would have to start all over again. So, she kept soldiering on.
…
The next day, Bishop Stubborn was at the balcony on the castle as he announced to the public, "Chatterbox is a witch! We must burn the witch down!"
Everyone believed him and roared, "Burn the witch now! Burn the witch now! Burn the witch now!"
Chatterbox was almost close to finishing the final shirt when the guards came in and dragged her, "Come on witch!", shouted one of the guards.
She gasped in horror as she knew what was going on. Chatterbox knew she was close to her death because everyone believed she was a witch. She cried silently yet tiredly as she continued knitting the final shirt. She must continue. She must do it for her brothers. She must not give up too soon.
…
Meanwhile, King Grumpy watched the public in horror as the stake was set on fire. He watched as Chatterbox was inside the wagon as he growled, "Chatterbox is not a witch! I refuse to believe it! Chatterbox! I'm coming!"
…
Back outside, the six swans circle around the event as Chatterbox was so close to finishing the final shirt. She was exhausted until she heard Bishop Stubborn roar in anger, "Now, bring the witch to the fire!"
Just then, Chatterbox spotted the guards was about to approach her when she spotted King Grumpy on his horse, "Stop! I command you to stop!"
"No, we won't! She's a witch and she's going to burn!", Bishop Stubborn shouted.
Just then, Chatterbox spotted her brothers as one by one, she threw the shirts at her brothers. When she got to her youngest brother, she shouted, "Sorry, it's not done, Bounce!"
With that, the swans landed on the ground and they turned to their true selves permanently. They were all happy but Bounce had one swan wing. The brothers hugged their sister and thanked her. Just then, Chatterbox noticed Bounce's wing, "Oh, your arm.", she cried.
"Don't worry, I'm okay as long as you're okay, sister.", Bounce replied.
"But I was… so… so close…", Chatterbox replied exhaustingly as she collapsed near the stake.
Everyone gasped in horror, "Chatterbox!", her brothers and King Grumpy cried.
Just then, something magical happened as flowers spread far from the exhausted Chatterbox as the fire disappeared and flowers spread everywhere. Everyone gasped in awe as they believed she was the message from God. When Bishop Stubborn saw this, he cried in horror as he ran away.
Once more, Bounce's wing turned into an arm as he gasped in joy, "My arm! It's back to normal!"
With that, Chatterbox moaned and groaned as she slowly got up. When she saw her brother's arm back to normal, she embraced him, "Oh, Bounce! Your arm is back!"
They both cried in joy before she and the brothers explained everything from their childhood to now. The crowd was horrified, but they believed them. In the end, King Grumpy approached Chatterbox as he asked, "Do you forgive me?"
Chatterbox smiled gently, "Of course, I do."
King Grumpy and Chatterbox held hands as everyone cheered for them. They both fell in love as Chatterbox was glad he believed her from the beginning while he knew was honest and kind. Just seeing her sacrifice her life to save her brothers showed how amazing she was, and how brave she was too.
…
A year later, Chatterbox and King Grumpy got married, and the six brothers decided to stay with them until they visited their father. When King Fussy learnt the truth, Naughty was sentenced to life in prison, but she escaped. There, Tickle became the next king and took his father's place while Chatterbox ruled with her husband, and they all lived happily ever after.
