It had been about two weeks. Luz had succumbed to the morning sickness finally, having woken Amity up a couple of times. Amity, thankfully, was working from home. She still hadn't quite taken maternity leave yet, she wanted to wait until Luz was certain.
Working digitally meant that no matter how far along Luz was she could probably get some amount of work done. In the time since the tests, she had spent a lot of her time working on artwork, diving headfirst into any project or commission she could take. She had even opened up "emergency commissions" on her Twitter, though she never said for what.
As much as the extra money was nice, Amity had a distinct feeling she knew why Luz was drawing so much. She couldn't blame her, though. But Amity was staying strong for both of them, she knew she had to. She knocked on the door to Luz's office and heard a small noise before she was invited in.
Luz was clad in one of her favorite hoodies. One she hadn't changed out of for a few days, now that Amity thought about it. The shorter woman managed a weakened smile at the sight of her wife. Amity set a tray of food down for her on one of the side desks before turning around to pull Luz in for a kiss. Luz took her hands out from the hoodie pocket, craning her neck far to meet Amity in the eyes before the taller woman leaned down to close the gap. Luz felt a hand squeeze her shoulder before they pulled away.
"How are you doing?" Amity asked.
Luz's eyes had begun to drift over to the mirror in the corner, "I'm alright," she said, her eyes coming back to Amity, "that kiss certainly helped me out."
Giggling, the taller woman took a seat. "I'm happy to hear it. Have you eaten today? I made you lunch, just in case."
Luz blinked a few times, and her stomach made a noise strong enough to make her wince. Amity took that as a distinct "no" and handed her a bowl. Luz held up a forkful of carne guisada.
Whatever sort of classes she had taken back in high school to impress Luz were paying off. Amity laughed as her eyes rolled back when she ate it, and Luz gave her a gentle nudge.
"Hey, don't laugh at me," Luz said, "my wife makes great food. You laughing at my wife's cooking?"
Amity just rolled her eyes and smiled, taking a spare seat before helping herself to some. As they ate, the tension that had never left started to sink back in. The air felt heavier the longer they didn't talk, and they both knew they were dancing around the questions they needed to be asking.
Swallowing hard, Amity set her bowl aside. "So have you...thought about it a bit?"
Luz hesitated, gaze falling to the floor, "Yeah,"
"You know I'm not going to make you do anything, right?"
Luz nodded, "Of course, baby. I know you wouldn't."
Amity's smile sent a wave of warmth across Luz; She trusted her like no one else on Earth. But there was a weird feeling the woman couldn't shake. It felt like a constant pressure weighing her down. The worst part was that she knew exactly what it was, and she knew from the moment the test was positive. She knew from the way she kept staring at herself in the mirror.
Luz put a hand on her stomach. She had always struggled pretty hard with her self-image. Most of Her clothes were very baggy and blurred lines, the bomber jacket she had since she and Amity had met was a staple of hers at this point. But even when she went to embrace something more feminine she made sure that her outfits had layers, and she never wore anything that showed anything around her waist. Growing up as she did didn't help her case either.
She still had occasional flashbacks to the first time she asked someone out.
How it took her until high school to get a body dysmorphia diagnosis she didn't know.
Luz knew that Amity was patient with her though. Truthfully, as difficult as the process has been Amity really has helped her gain some confidence. It wasn't one hundred percent better, of course; if medication and the love of her life hadn't gotten rid of it, it wasn't going away. But life with Amity had made things bearable outside of a few occasions now and then.
But being pregnant?
There was a voice, deep in the back of her mind, that had already seeded its doubt. It was only getting stronger with each day. She really, really didn't like considering the fact of what she was going to look like as time went on, not only when she was pregnant but even after the fact. Luz was all too aware of the fact that she was running out of time to decide. before she ended up with changes that weren't going to go away. She felt like bricks were tied to her soul just to drag her down.
Or maybe she was just tired. And scared.
She was dragged out of her thoughts by a very concerned Amity, who had placed her hand on her thigh. She had zoned out.
"I want to think about it a little longer," Luz said finally.
"That's okay," Amity said, "I understand this is a...Really, really big thing to consider."
Luz nodded, her head hung to look at the floor. The dents in the carpet left by her office chair were apparently very captivating. She took a sharp breath and looked her wife in the eyes.
Well, she looked her wife in the eyes. She knew Amity couldn't really look her in the eyes, she was probably looking right at the bridge of her nose. She was doing her best.
"You still love me, right?"
The other woman was a little taken aback by the question, her face one of concern. "Of course I do, Luz! What would make you think I wouldn't?"
"It's just...I don't know, this is all so scary. It's a big change to our lives and I just..."
Soft arms had already wrapped around her chest and Amity pressed her lips to the top of her head. The shorter woman's arms immediately came up and draped themselves around Amity's waist, fingertips dug into her. Luz pressed the side of her head into her wife's tummy, sighing contently as she let herself melt into the warmth and soft skin underneath Amity's shirt. She just wanted her to be close, to be there. It helped her feel safe.
"You know I'm never gonna not love you, right? Not because you're having to be patient with a decision, not because you're scared, not because you're uncertain, and certainly not because you're pregnant.
"I love you. I'm never going to stop loving you, either."
Luz nodded into Amity's body. "I know baby. It's just hard sometimes."
"I understand, mi batata."
She instantly felt Luz grin.
"You can't just do that," she giggled.
"Too late," Amity grinned back, planting another kiss on Luz's forehead, "acabo de hacerlo."
Luz felt her cheeks flush- Amity had gotten so much better at Spanish since when they first met, and it always gave her butterflies- but was cut off with a yawn. A hand rubbed soothing circles on her back, and she hummed.
"I'm sleepy," she mumbled.
"Nap time?"
"Nap with me?"
Amity smiled and helped Luz up from her chair. "I'd take any excuse."
