Once upon a time there was a boy who was broken into two by a man with the title of 'Master'. The first side of the boy, who kept his light and his body, could not handle this. He very nearly faded away. The second side of the boy, who kept his darkness and his memories, could not handle this. He was drowning in pain.
The light was taken away.
The dark was forced to stay.
The light was taken to a 'prison'.
The dark found monsters in his very own prison.
A newborn heart found the fading light.
The rest, as they say, was history…
Or at least, it would've been if it was not for a little… twist… of fate…
Riku stared down at the younger boy. He had to have been at least a year younger than Riku himself. Just like Sora.
The boy was strange. He was washed up upon the shore, asleep. But the only thing that was wet were his sandals. That was because the very edge of his feet were being lightly kissed by the calm waves.
What was stranger was the fact that he looked like an almost exact replica of Sora. From this clothes down to his face and hair, except that his hair was pitch black.
Like the night sky.
His skin was far too pale, as though he had never seen the sun before. Somehow, the moonlight made pale skin bright.
If Riku was being honest, he wasn't sure if he would be greeted with the same blue eyes Sora had.
Stranger even more so was how he was found.
Riku and Sora were having a sleepover at Sora's when suddenly, Sora got this… look on his face. Riku didn't know how to explain it. Then he just stood up and walked out the door. Never in their short life did Sora do something like that.
So Riku followed Sora. Who didn't react to his questioning. All the way down to the beach. And when they saw the body, both boys started to run.
"Do you think he's going to be okay?" Sora finally asked, as he seemed to snap out of whatever spell he was under.
And who knows, maybe Sora was under a spell.
"Dunno." Riku turned to look at his friend.
Sora was still looking down at the boy, his worry clear as day on his face.
"We should take him to your house. Maybe your mom can help him." He suggested. After all, they were having a sleepover at Sora's.
He watched Sora nod. Together they picked the boy up, and took him to Sora's home.
Sora's mom was standing at the door, waiting for the boys to come back. And probably to scold them for leaving without telling her. Riku didn't quite know, but whatever she was going to say died on her lips when she saw the boy Riku and Sora were holding.
"Give him to me. I'll set him on the couch." She said.
Riku nodded, relieved to get rid of the heavy boy. He noticed that Sora nodded too. But he looked like he didn't want to let go of the mysterious boy.
But, Sora's mom was the boss, and what she said goes.
"You two head up. It's past your bedtime anyway boys." She told them. In her kind blue eyes, just like Sora's, Riku could see that she was tired. And worried.
"But what about him?" Sora jumped.
Kneeling down, his mom set a hand to his head. "I'm going to call a doctor okay? I'll let you know what's going on in the morning. Okay?" Her smile seemed to help smooth Sora's nerves, but both Riku and Sora's mom knew that Sora was still a ball of worry.
Sora thought about it for a moment, but he nodded in understanding.
"Come on, Sora." Riku said, grabbing his friend's hand. "Let's go. He'll be fine with your mom."
With that reassurance, Sora grinned, and smiled much more enthusiastically.
Later, that night, Riku began to wonder who that mysterious boy was, why he looked like his best friend, and how he got there. He also wondered why Sora acted so weird that made the two find the boy. And as sleep began to claim him, he thought about how three nights prior was when Sora helped that hurting person.
Then, the days went like this. The boy was found to be healthy, with a weird birthmark on his chest that kind of looked like a half of a broken heart, but what was in what the doctor called a 'coma'. Sora did something odd and threw a fit when the doctor suggested taking the boy to the hospital. So the boy ended up staying at Sora's place.
The boy got his own room, and had his needs taken care of. Riku was there one day and saw Sora tried to feed soup to the boy.
Sora basically had a reverse grounding with how much he hovered over the boy. Which meant he was forced outside to hang out with Riku. Riku wasn't quite sure how he felt about that. But he did his best to keep Sora's mind away from that boy.
It was like this for seven days. Then the boy woke up. Riku was there to see his eyes flutter open.
Blank, red, eyes met Sora's own blue.
A new routine was created after that. Sora would help the boy around the house, and tell him all sorts of things. Riku would be there to make sure Sora wouldn't go overboard, but also to see what the boy was like.
He was quiet. Didn't say a word. Didn't even make a noise. He let himself get dragged around like he was a doll or something.
Then thirteen days after he woke up, he said his first word.
Reaching out for Sora's hand, the boy held it and said, "brother."
Both Riku and Sora blinked slowly at that. Then, the widest, brightest, smile ever to grace Sora's face appeared.
"Yeah! We're brothers!"
And Riku… Riku didn't know how to feel about that. He didn't know what to feel as he watched Sora get excited over this mysterious boy who's first word was 'brother'. But he knows that he shouldn't have felt surprised by how the boy sounded. It would make sense that if he looked like Sora, then he would also sound like him. Yet he was surprised nonetheless.
Maybe it was the way the boy's voice was so soft, like when Sora's voice was when he was still incredibly sleepy. Or maybe it was something else.
Riku thinks he should be worried. There was something odd going on, he knew that. Three days since the hurt person he appeared, seven he spent sleeping, and thirteen mute. Riku feels like those numbers should be important somehow. But he has a feeling that the hurt person and the mysterious boy who looks like a strange mirror of Sora were connected.
A dark mirror… of Sora…
"Yozora." Riku whispered.
"Hmm?" Sora turned from the boy to Riku. "Did you say something?"
The oldest boy didn't speak for a moment, thinking. Coming to a decision he said, "Yozora. That should be his name."
The boy turned to look at Riku. Together, at the same time, Sora and the boy blinked. Once again, Riku didn't know how he should feel about that.
"That's awesome!" Sora exclaimed, wide smile back in place. "But uh, why?"
"Well," Riku started, "we found him at night right?"
A nod.
"And he looks like you."
Another nod.
"And your name means sky right? Yozora means night sky." He finishes.
He watched as understanding glittered like the sun in Sora's eyes. "That's amazing! Riku you're so awesome!" He then turned back to the boy. "Yozora! That's what we'll call you! Yozora!"
As Sora celebrated the new name, Riku stood back and watched. Much like how he had been doing most of the time the boy, now Yozora, had been at Sora's home. He watched as Sora told his mom all about the new name, and how she told him that that's more than likely not the boy's name. But until he could tell them his real name, they could call him Yozora.
They never did get his name from him.
His mind was blank.
He didn't remember anything.
Riku could not help but feel the worry in his heart grow. Riku knew that everyone said that he was a smart boy for his age. But he was only five years old. And Sora was four. Riku felt that it was his duty to take care of and protect his best friend.
He hopes this Yozora wouldn't make his worries feel like they were always the truth. That he was right. He hopes Yozora would prove his worries wrong.
He hopes Yozora won't hurt Sora's heart.
Soooooo. Hi. I actually had this in my drafts for a while now, but never got around to posting it since I had Plans:tm: and wanted to write more chapters before I posted. And I never did. Until I got on Tumblr to check the Kingdom Hearts tag (or the KH Vanitas tag I don't remember tbh) and then I saw a post to a link of a fic with some fan art and I just. Went ! BECAUSE SAME FUCKING BRAIN DUDE! What were the absolute odds I'd find someone who had the same idea as me of having Vanitas get small and become Sora's brother? Probably big enough odds for this to bound to happen, but still. Anyways if you've read thatflark1 and Xavier3's co written fic "Did you see that new kid on the island" then you can see how different our takes are. And I bet they'll only get even more different the further the story progresses :)
(And ngl this is why I love it when different people write about something that has the same core concept, because it all flows differently from there and it's just super cool ya know?)
But yeah, I mulled it over a bit and decided to finally post this. I can't promise you that this will be updated and if it does I can't promise you that I'll finish it. I, unfortunately, have this nasty habit called procrastination and the wonders of trying to put a scene from my head into words.
I'm done now, and I hope you've enjoyed the story!
