Written for Valentine's Day but posted a day late. Nevertheless, Happy Valentine's Day!
I don't own Kingdom Hearts or any associated properties or franchise.
The only things I own are this story, the cover art, and the laptop I wrote this story in.
Don't forget to R & R.
How long have they been traveling through darkness?
Sora doesn't remember. All he knows is that as long as he does not lose sight of his Light, everything will be fine.
His Light. His Light is the only thing saving him from being lost in the darkness.
Darkness almost swallows him. But her voice always brings him back. Even now, as Sora protects her, her Light keeps saving him. Her Light is the only thing he remembers now; even though he has forgotten so much, he still remembers her.
That's right, Sora, as long as we're together, we can get through anything.
The warmth in his chest grew bigger.
His Light— Kairi —always knows what to say to him.
Kairi is the only Light he has now. He has to protect her.
It doesn't matter how long they are stuck here in the darkness.
As long as they are together, everything will be okay.
Time passes. Sora doesn't know how much. He just keeps walking and walking and walking. He holds Kairi's Heart in his claws, careful not to scratch her petals. He has to protect Kairi from everything, even from himself.
You could never hurt me, Sora.
Sora hums. Kairi's Light is too kind. A creature of darkness like him can never match her pureness. She is too good for him.
Sora! Behind you—!
Sora feels it. A scary dark feeling from behind. He turns around and sees so many Heartless surrounding him. Soldiers, Darkballs, Gargoyles, even little Shadows like him pose to attack him.
To hurt her .
No!Sora won't let them get near her. He swipes a claw at their advancing steps but they dodge and jump at him. There are too many—
Sora!
This time, I'll protect you!
Light bursts out from the flower-heart in Sora's arms. It blinds him. Saves him from the other Heartless as they are destroyed from her pure Light, fading away and leaving him alone with no flower in hand.
Wait. Where is his Light?
Where is Kairi?!
Sora looks around frantically. She was gone!
Kairi!
Sora?
At first he doesn't hear her voice, now small and quieter. But he hears it and sees her.
A small Shadow like him—only white and glowing with light.
Sora, I'm scared! It's so dark here!
Sora doesn't hesitate to run up to Kairi and pull her into a hug. Even as a white Shadow, her warmth soothes him.
You're warm too, Sora.
Kairi is still kind. She is still a creature of light. Her Heart has to be protected. He pulls back from her as he vows: This time, he protects her!
Kairi nods happily.
Yes! Wherever you go, I'm always with you, Sora.
Sora beams. He is always with her too.
How long have they been traveling?
Sora can't tell anymore. Neither can Kairi. They just keep walking and walking. Sora is getting tired and he can tell Kairi is tired too, even if she won't say.
I'm not tired, Sora. I can keep going, We have to keep searching.
Searching, always searching. For their missing hearts and a way out of the cold, lonely darkness.
But how much longer can they take?
Sora shakes his head.
It doesn't matter. As long as Sora protects Kairi, everything will be okay.
Don't forget, Sora, wherever you go, I'm always with you.
Sora hums in agreement. Yes, as long as the two of them are together, everything will be alright.
In the end, it is light that saves them.
Not Kairi's Light, which is big and warm but a different light, so bright and yet so empty.
They follow that light out of the darkness and into a castle.
A big empty castle filled with people who are even emptier. They feel so hollow to Sora and Kairi. It scares them a little.
Sora! Can you feel that?
Sora stops and feels. Oh, he sees what she feels now.
Hearts.
Small, barely glimmering but hearts all the same. Hearts that are on this empty castlebright now. Hearts that feel so familiar to them both.
Kairi runs ahead of Sora. Come on! We have to find them!
Sora nods and follows along. Wait up, Kairi!
They run and run until they see the light. The light that guides them to a room of white.
A room where two tiny newborn hearts are waiting to meet them.
(Inside a room lined in white, a boy with dark blond hair sees two Shadow Heartless. He brandishes his keyblade at them, only to stop in confusion.
"Naminé," he asks, "Who are they?"
A girl with flaxen blond hair gasps and bends down to look at the two Heartless standing side by side, hand in hand.
One dark and one light.
Just like them.
"Roxas…we found them.")
Sora, I think we found them.
("Our hearts.")
Our hearts.
And so the two found themselves again, in a boy cloaked in black and a girl clothed in white.
They had found their Light at the end of the tunnel.
