[Chapter 1]
Nightmare Moon wasn't the only being sealed in a celestial body, and she certainly wasn't the only ancient power released on the night of the Summer Sun Celebration.
]|[ music: Lullaby for A Princess
When the Elements shattered Twilight lost all hope of winning against Nightmare Moon. She stood there watching hopelessly as her opponent fired a concentrated blast of magic at the group of friends, she idly wondered what awaited her after death, 'Would I wander for eternity? Would I go to heaven or hell?'. Such thinking was interrupted as a bright flash of golden light momentarily blinded them. When the light dimmed, it revealed an alicorn with dark charcoal fur that seemed to be made of shadows and a mane of flowing black smoke that faded to white at the end. His eyes were of two different colors, the left a deep midnight blue, and the right a golden yellow. His horn was of the same shade as his fur and it glowed a dark but gentle black as a barrier of shadows was seen in front of them.
The figure then lowered his magic barrier and spoke, "You know, for some one sealed in a celestial body for a thousand years, you sure pack a punch."
"What! Impossible! You're supposed to be dead! We used the Elements to completely erase your body from existence!" The Princess of Night exclaimed taking a step back.
"You're right," the figure replied with a sad smile, "I am supposed to be dead… I deserve to be." He said the last part in a whisper but everyone (everypony?) heard it clearly.
When he spoke again his tone seemed different, more resigned, "I… I wish you a happy 1250th birthday… sister."
And with that the figure gathered what energy he possessed, and gathered all five Elements from their shards. Then he used his magic to help Twilight prepare the sixth Element without interference. When this was done he positioned the Element shards behind him in a circle formation, with the Elements of Laughter, Kindness, Loyalty, Honesty, Generosity, and Magic going to their respective bearers. With the Elements ready and his opponent charging up a massive magic attack, he began chanting a spell, "Lullay Moon Princess goodnight sister mine. Rest now in moonlight's embrace. 'Bear up my lullaby winds of the Earth, through cloud and through sky And through space. Carry the peace and the coolness of night, and carry my sorrows in kind.' Luna, you're loved so much more than you know. 'May troubles be far from your mind. And forgive me for being so blind'."
As he spoke his horn began glowing a lighter and lighter color, going from deep black to dark gray to light gray and finally to white. With his horn glowing brightly he then fired a bright beam of light as Nightmare Moon did the same. The beams clashed and in a blinding display of light and dark the Princess of Night was pushed back and, after a brief struggle launched by the beam of light and sent flying into a wall.
As this was happening, Twilight was having an epiphany about the nature of the Elements, she realized that the shards didn't matter when she had the very thing that created them: friends. And with that the Elements of Harmony reassembled and bound themselves to their bearers in the form of necklaces and, in the exception of Twilight, a crown.
Then six beams of light came from the newly assembled Elements and converged to create a single beam of rainbow colored light that hit Nightmare Moon head on. The resulting flash of light temporarily blinded those present but when the dust settled, there, crying on the ground was Princess Luna. Another flash denoted the arrival of Princess Celestia as she walked over and comforted her sister.
While this was happening the figure then walked over to the group, sat down and attempted to heal them. But before he could gather his energy a golden barrier formed around the group of six, shielding them from his reach. As he inspected the barrier a firm voice spoke out from across the floor, "Why are you here Ira Sombra? Have you come to take your revenge?"
The figure sighed, "Why would I do the same thing that cost me my best friend?" Contrary to popular opinion he did not wish to rule the world or cause eternal darkness. He just wanted to be happy and see his sisters one last time.
"Then why are you here?" The voice of the Sun Princess inquired, the tension in her voice not dissipated.
"Is it that hard to believe that I just want to see you two one last time?" The figure said, sadness lacing his voice, and regret his eyes.
"…As much as I want to believe you… I can't." Celestia replied.
"I…I understand. If you wish to seal me away… I won't resist." The figure stated, letting his magic dissipate and entering a short coughing fit.
The gathered ponies were stunned at the figure's willingness to surrender without a fight. When they asked him why he replied, "I understand why you're doing this…you're doing this to protect others. I would be a hypocrite if I stood in your way."
"Then it's decided," Celestia declared, "you will be released from your prison on probation. I trust you won't cause too much trouble."
"T-thank you!" The figure said, jumping up and down as tears of joy flowed from his mismatched eyes down his face. "I can see the sunrise again! It's been so long I've forgotten what it feels like."
The figure then dried his tears and spoke once more, "Now that I am free, I can properly introduce myself… my name is Ira Sombra, which roughly translates to Angry Shadow, nice to meet you."
"I'm Rainbow Dash! The best flier in Equestria! See ya around!" A cyan colored pony with a rainbow colored mane replied.
The others then greeted Naruto with smiles, grins, and even a hug! Naruto was so happy to be free from his prison that he momentarily forgot about his 'sickness'.
The ponies present looked in concern as Naruto, who had seemed fine earlier, suddenly began coughing violently with drops of blood coming from his mouth.
"Hey are you alright?" Twilight asked the shady pony, (pun intended) concerned for his health.
"I'm fine, just… tired is all." Ira replied quickly wiping the blood from his mouth.
"You sure about that?" Applejack inquired, "you looked like you were in pain."
"It's just a cough," The dark entity reasoned while grinning nervously, "nothing to worry about."
"Doesn't look that way to me." The newly freed Princess Luna said, appearing behind him, "are you hiding something from us?"
"Whatever it is, you can tell us." The Element of Magic stated.
"Yea! We won't judge!" Rainbow said walking over to him.
"…"
"…"
"Fine," the mysterious pony said, his voice a mix of anger, sadness, and regret. "But first let me tell you a story…
Flashback{1}
Once upon a time, thousands of years ago, back when the world was still without peace and war and strife were common. There was a colt whose mane and soul outshone the sun in purity. He was treated as a demon by his village for the being sealed in him on the day of his birth, but he held no ill will towards them. He had no parents or relatives, only himself and another colt with a mane like the midnight sky that he called his brother in all but blood. Each understanding somewhat the others suffering. For the second colt had his whole family slaughtered on the same night by his own brother, his own flesh and blood.
Years later they were put on the same team, but much had changed. For not even a year later the second colt left the village in search of power to kill his brother. The first colt went after his brother to stop him from leaving and to keep a promise. They fought, and the second colt left victorious. The other one trained harder so he could bring his brother back.
But alas, it was not meant to be, for three years later a war broke engulfing the entire world in its embrace. The war was started by a single man who wanted to bring peace to the world by putting it under a illusion called the Infinite Dream. The war lasted three days, and ended with the sealing of a mad goddess by two brothers each bearing a mark on their forehead, the first got the White Sun mark, the other got a Black Crescent Moon.
By now the brothers were set on bringing peace to the world. But they had different methods, the first thought peace could only be attained through understanding and love, the second thought peace could only be achieved by having a common enemy on which the world's hatred could rest and die with.
To settle this and break the Cycle of Hatred, they fought one last time, holding nothing back. They fought each other from sunrise to sunset, causing mountains to crumble and the sky to darken. At sunset they stood, one across from the other. They decided to settle it with one last attack. Afterwards the second brother conceded defeat, thus breaking the Curse of Hatred, and returned to the village.
Then after three years had passed, the first brother started to change, he became a creature born from hatred, anger, regret and sadness. This change was brought about by the breaking of the Curse and Cycle of Hatred, and he became the embodiment of the very thing he swore to end. When the village saw what he was becoming, they began to attack him fearing he would destroy them with his power. Fearing what could happen if he defended himself, the first brother fled the village of his birth in shame of what he symbolized.
When word got out that he fled, his village began to spread rumors about him. They said that he was a demon that wished to destroy the world. But rather than let their hate consume him, he used his Curse to connect with others, and help them overcome the emotions he embodied in an attempt to make them see that they were wrong about him. He failed. Following this he changed his name to Ira Sombra. The Shadow angered by injustice.
But he didn't fall into despair, instead he thought of it as an opportunity. He realized that he was connected to the emotions of hate and anger, and so theorized that when these emotions are prevalent he would become stronger. He further theorized that if these emotions were weak he would become weaker.
With this in mind, he had a new goal: to help the world find peace and rid the world of his existence as the embodiment of anger, hatred, regret and sadness.
In the years that followed, he discovered many things about himself that he didn't know before. Such as learning that he was an immortal entity capable of using an almost endless amount of magic.
At first he was happy that he could continue to help until the end of time or until he was no longer needed to help. As the years went by his friends died one by one, eventually leaving him all alone.
But still he refused to stop helping others resolve their negative emotions. For the next 1000 years he traveled the world, helping whoever he could.
Eventually he was found by the Two Sisters, who thought it best to try to banish him. They fought, but the first brother hesitated, wanting to solve the problem peacefully. When he finally managed to restrain them, he asked a single question: Why?
The Sisters replied that it was because he was a being consumed by hatred and malice that they sought to banish him.
But rather than fight, he thought it best to just continue to talk it out peacefully. He told them that he had no desire to fight them, nor did he wish spread hatred throughout the world. After he had said his piece, he released them from their restraints and began backing away as quickly as possible. This proved to be useless in the end as they managed to banish him to Limbo using the Elements of Harmony.
And there he stayed for 1111 years, waiting for something, anything to talk to. He was truly alone. No one to hear him cry. No one to hear him scream. No one to hear him beg for death to release him. No one to hear him ask why he didn't die. No one to fix a broken soul. Yet he kept going, because he hadn't accomplished his dream. To find peace, spread it, and protect it.
Until finally he was freed on the night before the longest day of the 1111th year, when the sun would aid in his escape, and he would bring about the return of the moon's true face.

"…okayyyy, that still doesn't explain why you were coughing up blood!" Rainbow Dash exclaimed, still wanting a clear explanation.
"Okay, okay, I was getting to that!" The shadowed pony said, before going into another coughing fit. Immediately causing Fluttershy to pull a hanky out of nowhere to give to the pony, who then thanked her for her kindness before continuing with the explanation, "The reason I coughed up blood is because… it's because I'm dying."
"WHAT!"
AN: This is my first fanfic, so it probably isn't the best. So any criticism is welcome, and I do mean any. I hope I did ok for a start. This will probably only be a one-shot unless I get enough positive motavation. So, peace out.
