Inspired by a story called "the long way around (1.0)" which can be found on AO3

In this AU, the Hexsquad never returned to the Demon Realm, grew up and mostly went their separate ways. Luz and Amity broke up some time after college, with the former becoming a writer and the latter pursuing business.

Amity Blight had spent most of the evening dancing it away, but her energy was starting to drop and her feet were starting to hurt. Heels had been a mistake. She stumbled over to the bar and asked for a hard cider. While the barista poured the beverage, her eyes wandered to a table on the very edge of the reception. Luz Noceda, the woman she'd been avoiding all night, was in the middle of a chat with the groom and wearing a familiarly forced smile. Amity sighed and turned back to the bar, taking a swig of the cider in front of her.

"Snail for your thoughts?"

Willow Park (Was that still her last name? Amity wasn't entirely sure.) took a seat next to her fellow witch while the barista poured her a water. Amity regarded her for a moment and the gorgeous wedding dress she was wearing before turning back to her drink. "I'm not sure that's a purchase you want to make. It's your big day, Willow, and you're happy. As your maid of honor, it's my duty to keep you that way."

"Blight, nothing you have to say could ruin tonight, but I'll be at my happiest if I know all the guests are happy too."

"I'm happy for you. Is that enough?"

"But are you happy for yourself?"

"Honestly?" Amity looked at her friend, who gave her a nod. She took another heavy swig of the cider, and took a breath. "I don't think I've been happy since I left Vermont."

"Have you told her that?"

"Am I allowed to? I'm the one who walked out on her. I said some awful things that night, and I don't think she's ever forgiven me, no matter how much I apologized."

"Amity, this is Luz we're talking about. She's the reason you and I became friends again. You and my husband both became better people just by getting to know her. Even if she doesn't take you back tonight, you gotta start somewhere."

"I never said I wanted her back."

"You don't have to...not to me, anyway."

With a wink, Willow finished her water, walked over to the table, and pulled Hunter back towards the dance floor. Amity sat there in thought for a moment, observing her ex. Luz shed the fake smile soon as the bride and groom weren't in sight, plopping her head onto the table. Amity downed the remainder of her cider, and tentatively made her way to the table.

Luz sighed and fiddled with her champagne glass. It was sweet of Hunter to try and cheer her up, and she was truly happy for him and Willow, but the most he'd done was keep her brave face on a little longer...a face she was tired of wearing tonight. Once she finished her champagne, she was going right back to her mom's house, crawling into her old bed, and shed the tears she'd been holding in all day until she'd cried herself to sleep. That was the plan, at least, until she heard a voice in front of her.

"Can I...sit here?"

Oh no, Luz thought, her eyes widening as she looked up at the witch who'd broken her heart all those years ago. Amity was every bit as beautiful as the day she'd walked out on her, and Luz had her drooling face pressed against a table at their best friend's wedding. "Amity?" She clumsily sat back up and wiped her face off, "Um, sure! It's not like anyone else is. Heheh, you look great, by the way."

"Oh. Um, thank you," Amity sat down, her face turning a familiar shade of red. "You like pretty nice yourself."

Luz couldn't be sure how genuine that comment was. She'd seen herself in the mirror before the event. She thought she looked good, but would always look plain next to someone like Amity. There was once a time just being around this woman made her feel beautiful, but that felt like so long ago. She simply replied "Thanks" and smiled nervously. "So...Hunter and Willow..."

"Yep," Amity said, her eyes moving back and forth. "Um...I'm glad Valley Of The Honeybees is selling well. I thought it was a great read."

"You mean it? Thanks!" Luz perked up, "That's high praise coming from the founder of Blight Ideas."

Amity chuckled a bit. In California, she'd started a crowd source company for inventors and innovators. People would submit their ideas for a product. If an idea got enough positive feedback, her company would create a prototype, and then mass produce it. So far, the company had a few unique products to its name with the inventors retaining the patents and a generous percentage of the profits. "I'm just glad my family name can mean something good in this world." She paused a moment. "So...have you been seeing anyone?"

Luz turned away from the table and spit out the champagne she'd been sipping. "What? Who? Me?" She put the glass back on the table and leaned back on her chair, trying to seem aloof. "Not really. I've been on a few dates. A guy here, a gal there. Nothing serious...what about you?"

"Well...there's this one girl." Amity looked at Luz with a grin. "Something about her just drew me in. She isn't just pretty, she has this way of bringing out the best in everyone."

"Oh," Luz's heart sank. "That's nice. Did you bring her?"

"I think I would've liked to, but..." Amity looked down at the table, her grin dropping. The smile was still there, but there was a sadness in her eyes. "She'd...been through a lot. I thought I could be there for her...that we could be there for each other..." The smile faded. "...but she seemed so focused on what happened in the past, that she couldn't see what was right in front of her. One night, I called her out on this, and...things got heated."

"Wow," Luz looked at her ex-girlfriend, thoughtfully. The story Amity was telling sounded familiar. "So what happened?"

"I snapped at her," Amity's eyes were starting to tear up, "said some really horrible things, and...I left her. I wish I could tell her how much I regret that night, how sorry I am, that I never should've walked out on her. I just...don't think she could ever forgive me."

Luz hated seeing Amity like this. She and this new girl were making the same mistakes they'd made when they were together. It was too late for her, but perhaps it wasn't too late for Amity. Luz swallowed the lump in her throat. "Do you...love her?"

Amity nodded and wiped a few tears away, "With all my heart."

"Then go to her."

Amity looked up at her ex, "What?"

Luz got to her feet, leaned forward and put her hands on the table. "Go to her, Amity. Find this girl and tell her how much you love her. Tell her how sorry you are and never let her go again." The tears she'd been holding in all night seemed to burst from her eyes as she spoke. "For all you know, she still feels the same way. Even if what you said was painful to hear, maybe there was some truth behind it. Maybe she wants to say she's sorry for ignoring you, for not realizing just how good she had it. Right now, she's probably missing you so much it hurts sometimes!"

Amity stood up straight, pulled Luz off the table, and placed a passionate kiss on her lips. Luz was shocked for a split second, but found herself kissing back. When they finally pulled apart, Luz just stood there in disbelief, Amity staring back with a big, beautiful, tearful smile.

"You were...talking about...me?"

"I had hoped that was obvious!"

"You still love me?"

"YES!"

Luz couldn't help herself. She threw her arms around Amity and cried onto her shoulder, feeling the witch's arms tighten around her. Luz took a deep breath and sighed heavily, "I love you too."

Amity pulled away from the hug, placed a hand on Luz's cheek and locked eyes with her. "So, if you still love me, and I still love you...what does that make us now?"

Luz smiled back at her and tilted her head back to the party, "We can figure that out in the morning. For tonight...how about dance partners?"

"That works for me."

And so, Luz took Amity's hand and led her back to the dance floor. The bride and groom looked fondly at the reformed couple, swaying to the rhythm of a slow jazz number.

Never thought that you would be
Standing here so close to me
There's so much I feel that I should say
But words can wait until some other day

Kiss me once, then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time

Haven't felt like this, my dear
Since I can't remember when
It's been a long, long time

You'll never know how many dreams
I've dreamed about you
Or just how empty they all seemed without you

So kiss me once, then kiss me twice
Then kiss me once again
It's been a long, long time
