Chapter Two: Back to Sleep

Forcing his sleepy brain to engage for a moment, he realized the ringing was not coming from within the guest house. Assuming it was Higgins, and the incessant noise had something to do with the landscaping issue, Thomas decided he was too tired to put any more thought into the annoying ringing.

Moments later he was back asleep.

A loud splintering of wood startled him awake, and before he could get up, two men had grabbed him and dragged him up off the couch. He struggled to get free, managing to disentangle himself from one of the men, but then the other one must have punched him in the stomach because he suddenly couldn't stand up straight and his middle was screaming in pain.

He felt hands grab the arm he'd briefly managed to get free and was forced upright, and the area where he'd been punched was clearly not happy with that idea.

Forcing himself to focus on his precarious situation he attempted once again to get free, but the two men in masks holding him were not having it. A third man, also in a mask, strode towards them and reached into his pocket. When he pulled his hand out, the man was holding an older-style phone, more than likely a burner, which immediately began to ring.

The third man grabbed his right hand, slapped the phone into it, and said, "Answer the damn phone."

It took a split second for him to realize that the ringing he'd heard earlier had been meant for him all along, and whoever was trying to get in contact with him, really, really wanted to talk to him – now.

The two goons holding him lessened their hold just enough so Thomas could answer the phone. They obviously weren't worried about him causing any trouble, considering the fact that the third man now had a gun on him.

When the call connected, Thomas said, "Hello?"
