Chapter Nine: Eyes Opened
Seconds, minutes, or hours later, Thomas opened his eyes and briefly wondered why his head hurt so much. After a few moments, he finally realized he was lying on the floor, staring at the legs of the coffee table.
Cautiously, he began to get up off the ground, thankful for the nearby furniture to help get him back to a mostly standing position. Sitting on the arm of the couch, he slowly breathed in and out, trying to get his bearings.
Suddenly, the invasion into his home flooded into his mind and, ignoring his headache, he frantically looked around for the phone he'd been holding before the lights had gone out. He quickly found it sitting on top of the coffee table, and scoffed at the thought of the guy who had hit him being so considerate as to make sure he didn't lose his blackmailer's phone.
Staring at the phone on the table, he thought about what Ivan had said and wondered what to do next. Though the man said he had Higgins, and it was more than likely he did, Thomas didn't know if he should simply take the man's word for it.
