Chapter Ten: Believing Thomas
His first instinct is to doubt Ivan's word about having taken Higgins, but then he remembers a time not-so-long ago when he encountered Ivan in person for the first time on his 'mission' to the Triple Frontier.
The man's plan had been solid, but it had only been the fault of a lack of intelligence regarding background information, which had led to Ivan's downfall back then. Otherwise, Magnum was pretty certain the man would've succeeded and he would be dead.
This time, he believed Ivan wouldn't have taken anything to chance with his plans – Juliet was being used as leverage and Magnum doubted any evidence had been left behind.
He thought he could handle Ivan and whatever the man was ultimately planning. The question was whether he should attempt to get Rick and T.C. involved at all, maybe have them focus on finding Higgins and rescuing her.
Magnum had no doubt Ivan was monitoring him through the phone he'd been given. Was he only being tracked via GPS, or was there a listening device too? If he was going to get help from his brothers, then he'd have to resort to one or more of the methods of communication they'd developed while POWs overseas.
Thomas looked at his watch. It was still too early for him to break into either location where Rankin might have the information Ivan wanted without risking getting caught. He would stick out like a sore thumb at either place this time of the morning, and he wasn't familiar enough with the government building the prosecuting attorney's office was located in to go there before working hours.
Regardless of whatever other plans he came up with to break into Rankin's office and home, once he figured out where the latter was, Thomas needed to look presentable. Shorts and a wrinkled Hawaiian shirt would not cut it. He rushed upstairs to take a quick shower and change clothes.
It was only when he was in the shower, that he remembered the dogs.
