Chapter Eleven: Doubting Thomas
Magnum decided he didn't want to take any chances on Ivan having lied to him about Higgins. The man was good at manipulating people to do what he wanted, and Ivan hadn't yet given him any proof he had Juliet.
As he ran towards the main house, Thomas wondered what Ivan might ultimately be planning and whether or not he should get Rick and T.C. involved.
Magnum had no doubt Ivan was monitoring him through the phone he'd been given. Was he only being tracked via GPS or was there a way they were listening too? If he was going to get help from his brothers, then he'd have to resort to some of the methods of communication they'd developed while POWs overseas.
Not far from the house, Thomas came across Apollo. Or was it Zeus? It was difficult for him to tell the dogs apart most of the time. Regardless, in his mind, it confirmed Ivan's men had Higgins. There was absolutely no way Juliet would leave her beloved dogs behind like that. Still, he planned to double check, just in case.
He went to his knees next to the dog, which ended up being Zeus, relieved to find the animal was breathing without any difficulties. Quickly checking the Doberman over, he discovered a tranquilizer dart and removed it. Finding no other injuries, he carefully picked up the dog and continued towards the main house.
Just inside the open front door, he found Apollo in a similar condition. Still carrying Zeus, Thomas carefully stepped over Apollo, and hurried to deposit the animal comfortably in its crate. He hurried back over to Apollo, and repeated the same process he had with Zeus. He made sure there was plenty of water for both dogs along with some food, knowing there wasn't much more he could do for them without contacting a vet, something he assumed Ivan would not allow.
Thomas then checked the main house, including the wine cellar, for clues now that he knew it was where Higgins had been abducted from. To his frustration, there was no evidence except for Juliet's phone, which had been left on the desk alongside her computer, and an overturned computer chair. He set the chair to rights, and considered pocketing the cell phone.
