Chapter Thirteen: Not Smart Enough
Thomas took Higgins' phone with him, hoping to use it to contact his brothers, and maybe get ahead of whatever Ivan is planning.
He also considered calling Kumu to ask her to care for the dogs as she has done in the past when he and Higgins have been out all hours working on a case. Magnum quickly reconsidered when he reminded himself that Ivan's men were likely watching who was coming and going from the estate while he was still there.
He's half way back to the guest house when the burner phone began to ring.
Thomas picked it up on the second ring. "Hello?"
"Having been in Naval Intelligence," Ivan began, sounding condescending, "I would have thought you would have been smart enough to know not to attempt to contact anyone for help."
Before Magnum could say anything, he heard a gunshot and a cry of pain he unfortunately was able to recognize.
Juliet.
"Don't make me hurt her again," Ivan said before immediately ending the call.
Dios mío, he thought.
