Prologue
Space.
The final frontier.
A place filled with stars and planets.
A place filled with many unknown mysteries.
Mankind once dreamed about going into space. Mankind once sought to reach out toward the stars and settle on different planets in different systems across the galaxy. Mankind wondered if there was life outside Earth's solar system.
That answer would come on July 7, 1999 AD, when an unidentified flying object crashed on an island called South Ataria Island, an island at the southernmost tip of the Ogasawara Islands. The world was at war until the ship crashed into the planet. The UFO turned out to be an alien starship that would be called Alien Starship One (ASS-1), and it was found heavily damaged and inoperable. Humanity, fearing that intergalactic war was inevitable, banded together to form the United Nations Government and began an ambitious project to see the ship examined, studied, and restored.
It took ten years for mankind to rebuild the ship, which led humanity to discover and develop "Over Technology". "Over Technology" development led to technological advances that pushed human civilization by at least a hundred years ahead of its time. Mankind had achieved prosperity at the dawn of the 21st century, being able to enjoy peace for the first time since the end of the 20th century.
Soon, the first generation of spaceships was built. Among those ships was ASS-1 reborn as the SDF-1 Macross, one of the biggest spaceships in history.
Then came the first alien species to make contact with mankind.
These aliens were the Zentradi, a race of nomadic, bioengineered giants that were great warriors. They were created by an ancient advanced civilization known as the Protoculture, the first ancestral race. The Zentradi had come to Earth, seeking the wounded prey that had slipped from their grasp, only to find it in the hands of mankind.
When the Zentradi noticed that the ship had been rebuilt, fearing that the native Earthlings had seized a powerful weapon to use against the Zentradi armada, they unleashed an orbital bombardment that wiped out six billion people off planet Earth. They did not hesitate to glass the planet with their advanced weapons, leaving nothing but a wasteland, all while the Macross had fled, carrying 750 million people along with them using the fold system to warp away from the impending doom that fell on human civilization.
Thus began the first conflict in space, known as Space War 1.
The Macross began its journey back to Earth after having appeared over Pluto with what was left of mankind. For months, the SDF-1 had to ward off Zentradi warships that came right at them, all while the civilian population onboard the ship try to live a normal life on board, especially a popular idol by the name of Lyn Minmay, whose songs had unknowingly begun to influence the Zentradi.
It was soon discovered that the Zentradi were created by the Protoculture to serve as soldiers. As such, they had no idea about what love or affection was. All they had ever gained from their creators were the means to wage war. They had no culture of their own. The Zentradi began to witness and hear things that shocked them. The sight of a man and a woman falling in love and the songs of a beautiful songstress was enough to cause a culture shock within the Zentrandi. They viewed physical love between males and females as a perversion.
When the Macross had finally arrived back on Earth, mankind, along with several Zentradi who, after beginning to experience independent thought through their interaction with human culture, had decided to defect, launched one final counterattack against the entire Zentradi armada, scoring a decisive victory with the death of the supreme commander of the Zentradi, Golg Boddole Zer. Space War 1 ended in 2010 AD, with mankind and the Zentradi working together.
Humanity would recover with the coexistence between man and Zentradi before reaching out towards the stars, building the first space colonies in the Earth Sphere, and on the moon before moving on towards Mars. The United Nations would be reorganized as the Earth Federation, marking the beginning of the New Cosmic Era (NCE).
Things were looking up for humanity, but that all changed in NCE 51, only half a century since the first space colonies were established. Tragedy struck that day and left a scar that would live on in infamy as 4.7 billion people on Earth died that day.
The first Astral Gate that was built on the moon went haywire and exploded, practically cracking the moon in half. This marked the first-ever major disaster to occur in the Neo Cosmic Era. The tides shifted violently and pieces of the moon were falling straight toward Earth, causing severe damage to the surface of the surface, reducing cities to rumble.
Things would only get worse from there.
On NCE 85, the Second Impact occurred, wiping out half of humanity through severe flooding with the melting of the polar icecaps of Antarctica. What followed was a war that ended the lives of half the human population. Over several thousand species of animals went extinct as the sea levels began to rise.
Then, in NCE 90, Side 3, a cluster of colonies furthest from the Earth, declared itself as the Principality of Zeon and waged a war of independence against the Earth Federation, thus sparking the darkest age of mankind since the early days of Space War 1. Humanity became horrified as the cruelty of war firmly sank its teeth back into human civilization once more as terrible war crimes were being committed one after the other.
The Earth Sphere began to suffer an outbreak of wars, alien invasions, and uprisings within the next ten years, removing any sense of peace from mankind. Hope for humanity would begin to dim to its lowest point with the Earth Federation being completely overwhelmed in these dark times. Hope was waning while despair was thriving.
But in the vast darkness that consumed the Earth Sphere, a shining beacon of hope remained. A beacon that would one day save all of mankind.
