The train was cold when Saiph woke up from her much needed nap, colder than before. Now that she had calmed down from the initial shock of waking up in a different world, she began to think. Saiph knew that she was in the Harry Potter universe, but only had her suspicions on where she was in the story. Who knows, her arrival may have changed things and she never really got into that much detail in her script.
She would need to wait until they got to Hogwarts to find out if she didn't get up to look around now, And Saiph was impatient.
She wandered through the halls of the train for the next half hour, peering into compartments and awkwardly looking away when she made eye contact with someone. With only a few compartments to go, she finally spotted someone she knew. The Golden trio, (Plus Remus Lupin) looking about 13-14 were sat immersed in conversation. The professor's presence confirmed it, she was in 3rd year.
"Damn. kinda hoping I was in the marauders' era, I know Sirius Black was hot in his prime." She whispered, knowing the thought was completely irrational due to the evidence she had already gathered. Then she thought about it more, "No wait he's my uncle, ew."
"But Regulus though…Nope, that's worse," She mentally gagged at the image.
"How thick would Harry have to be, to go looking for a nutter who wants to kill him?" She heard a muffled voice from inside the compartment, Ron.
This was so weird, she was listening to an actual conversation from the actual books.
"They'll catch him, won't they?" She heard Hermione answer.
"Unlikely" Saiph mumbled remembering how incompetent The Ministry had been in both the books and movies.
"What's that noise?" Ron said. Saiph suddenly felt a wave of fear ripple through her. Had they caught her? How would she explain herself? She hadn't even meant to be eavesdropping really, she had just got so caught up in the surrealness of it all.
Just when she thought they had caught her, she heard "it's coming from your trunk, Harry," She remembered now, it was the sneakoscope. Finally calming down after her scare she tuned back into the conversation just as Ron brought up the sweetshop, Honeydukes. Now that their serious conversation about Sirius was over, Saiph thought it was the perfect time to pop in and introduce herself. If they didn't know her already.
She could never be sure really, her memory was still fuzzy. Leaving no room for hesitation, she briskly rapped her knuckles on the compartment door.
"Come in," She heard from the other side.
"Hello," She greeted, sliding the door open "I'm Saiph, Saiph…Gray, yes Gray, that's it, that's my name." Gods she sounded like an idiot, but who could blame her. She had grown up idolising these characters and now she was getting a chance to actually talk to them.
Hermione frowned "We know Saiph, we've known you for two years, are you feeling okay?" Before said girl could answer she was interrupted by none other than the chosen one.
"Don't bother Hermione, she was probably put up to this by Draco and his Goons," Said Ron, scowling at the Raven haired girl. Okay, so Ron Weasley didn't like her one bit (not that she really cared), and thought she was friends with Draco Malfoy. Was she friends with the youngest Malfoy? She couldn't recall, but what did know is that she did not like how the blue eyed boy was talking to her one bit.
Opening her mouth to retort (and probably cuss Ron out), she once again interrupted, but by a different voice this time. "Well look who it is," the one and only Draco malfoy said in a lazy drawl, Crabbe and Goyle trailing behind him, "Potty and the Weasel."
'Not helping draco,' Saiph thought, regretting even speaking to the three Gryffindors in the first place. He obviously hadn't noticed her yet though as he kept going. "I heard your father finally got his hands on some gold this summer. Weasley" said Draco "did your mother die of shock?"
Saiph rolled her eyes at Draco's mediocre insult as the Weasley boy stood up, ready to defend his family's honour. The Black opted to step in before the fight got heated. If she was friends with Draco, she could get him to back down. "Hey Draco, you gonna say hello to me," She teased, attempting to draw his attention away from the trio.
At the same time she said this, the mysterious Professor Lupin gave a snort, drawing the blonds attention. "Who's that?" He asked the trio, seemingly ignoring Saiphs presence. She couldn't have that though and jumped in again.
"New teacher Draco, why else would there be a grown man on this train." She said "Now Draco, come along we need to catch up, we didn't see each other all summer after all," and with that she took him by the collar and started to drag him down the hall, his bodyguards following loyalty behind. Saiph didn't look back to see the confused and concerned expressions Hermione and Harry were making. She quickly found what seemed like the right compartment and dragged the three Slytherins in, shutting the door behind her.
In the new seating area sat four other people, two girls and two boys. She must have been getting better at this whole memory thing, because she recognised them all instantly. On the left were her two dorm-mates (and best friends) Pansy Parkison and Daphne Greengrass. On the right were two people she saw as brothers, Blaise Zabini and Theodore nott.
Saiph sent a nod of greeting to them before she turned back to the Malfoy. "Honestly Draco, you can't just go around making poor (literally) insults about people's families just because you feel like it," She scolded the boy "I know you hate Potter and his friends, but at least try to to be a decent human being," Even if Weasley did deserve it. Then she felt a small mischievous smile tug at her lips, and whispered in his ear "try hexing next time, it'll get the point across better."
"Now," she said, turning back to the other Slytherins "I do recall that I haven't seen any of you in three months," She held her arms wide and smiled brightly "where's my hug?" All at once she was engulfed by two grinning females.
"Oh I've missed you so much, Saiph, I always hate it when you have to go stay in America" Pansy mumbled into her shoulder.
Saiph spent another half hour with the Slytherins, just talking and catching up. She found that as more and more time went on, her memories were slowly returning and becoming clearer.
"Well, I must be off now, I still have to apologise to change into my robes and we're nearly there" Saiph said, gathering her things.
On her way to the bathroom/changing rooms she thought about the subtle expressions Harry and Hermione made when she dragged the boys away, yes she did see them thank you very much, she's not blind and very offended that you would think so.
Although Saiph wasn't exactly known for being nice, most other houses at least somewhat liked her. She was never unnecessarily rude, and she didn't have a stuck up attitude which was the norm for a lot of Slytherin purebloods. These weren't the only reasons many from other houses had taken a liking to her though. Saiph was also known to be a girl with many connections, she could smuggle basically anything into the castle, if you named the right price. Saiph wasn't paid in money though, she already had enough of that as it is, being the sole heiress to the house of Black and all, she was paid in favours, and it was impossible to know when she would collect her payment.
In all her years at Hogwarts she had never had many interactions with the Golden trio but often kept a subtle watchful eye out in case certain situations got out of hand, For some strange reason she had a soft spot for people who attracted danger and liked to intervene from the sidelines when necessary, in this way Saiph always knew what was going on with them despite almost never talking to them.
As she made her way past the compartment housing the boy who lived and his loyal companions, Saiph came across the trolley lady making her rounds. Now was the perfect time for her to try new treats while buying peace offerings for the Gryffindors, so that's what she did. By the time she was done, her arms were filled with lollies and she had the goofiest smile on her face.
When she reached the compartment again, there were already two new additions sitting within. Ginny Weasley and Neville Longbottom. She knocked on the door, not waiting for an answer, she slid right in, dumping the contents of her arms on the seat next to Ron.
He looked at it with desire in his eyes, then he looked up at who had brought it and immediately that desire dimmed. "What the bloody hell is this?" He said, trying to hide his excitement, this notion was quickly lost however when his stomach gurgled loudly.
"Isn't it obvious?" Saiph smirked, "a peace offering. From me, and I'd like to say Draco chipped in but he really didn't." She sighed loudly and plopped into the seat next to the sleeping professor "He can be such a pain to deal with sometimes y'know, so I hope you don't mind if I stay for a while."
Ron opened his mouth as if to say 'yes, we do mind' before he was quickly cut off by the bushy haired witch next to him. "You can stay as long as you like," She smiled and Saiph sent her own smile back. Hermione and Saiph had developed a sort of friendship over the past two years they had known each other. It all started in first year when Saiph was in the library and she came across Hermione reading a book of Greek history and Mythology. Being the mythology fanatic she was (and still is) Saiph immediately started up a conversation with the girl. Then things just went from there.
Ron went to protest again when he was cut off by the train slowing.
"Brilliant," said Ginny, getting up and walking carefully past Professor Lupin to try and see outside. "I'm starving, I want to get to the feast…"
Hermione's face scrunched into a frown "We can't be there yet," She said, checking her watch "So why are we stopping?" The train got slower and slower until it jerked to a halt, letting the sound of the rain and wind outside take over. A few seconds after that, all the lights went out leaving the teens in complete darkness.
Saiph felt her hand going towards the charm bracelet on her wrist, confused at the action she quickly withdrew it and reached for her wand instead. She could hear the others in the room stumbling around and stepping on each other, but Saiph stayed seated. "Lumos" she said and the room lit up once more. 1…2…3…4…5…6…7…8 people were seated in the compartment before the lights went out, so why were there nine now?
Saiph's eyes slowly drifted toward the ninth figure in the room, who was dressed in what looked to be a tattered black cloak. Her eyes grew wide, "Dementor," She breathed, said creature turned its head in her direction and started to drift nearer to her. Her arm seemed to react on instinct and Saiph soon found herself taking a swing at the creature. "Holy Fuck," she cursed as her hand when through the cloaked figure. So dementors can't be punched, noted.
The Dementor seemed to back off once it had gotten a good look at her and instead turned to Harry. The room grew colder and colder as the cloaked creature continued to stare at the glasses-wearing boy. Just as the room temperature dropped to below 0℃, and Harry's eyes rolled to the back of his head and he slid out of his seat onto the floor. Professor Lupin (who Saiph thought was still asleep) instantly stood up, stepping over Harry's fallen body and said "None of us is hiding Sirius Black under our cloaks. Go." The Demetor gave the rest of them a once over before gliding out of the cabin and back down the hall.
As soon as the thing was gone Hermione and Ron leapt out of their seats to check on the boy. A few minutes later the lights switched back on and the train began to move. Harry was still passed out on the floor so Hermione began slapping the boy, trying to get him to wake up. The black haired boy woke up with a start after the third slap and looked around blearily.
"Harry! Harry! Are you Alright?" Hermione asked loudly.
"W-what?" He stuttered.
"Are you OK?" Ron asked nervously.
"Yeah," Harry replied, looking quickly to the door, only to see the Dementor had vanished. "What happened? Where's that – that thing? Who screamed?"
"No one screamed," said Ron, more nervously still. Not seeing a reason to be there anymore, Saiph stood from her seat, picked up some treats from the pile she brought and left the cabin without saying a word. On her way back to her friends, Saiph noticed groups of students peeking out of their compartments and chattering anxiously. One even approached her.
He was tall and wore the yellow and black of Hufflepuff. If she looked closely enough, Saiph thought she could see him sparkling in the light. "Ah Edward, I mean Deadric – I mean Cedric, how's it going?" She awkwardly laughed. Fuck, did she really just call him Edward and Deadric in the same sentence. That was embarrassing.
Cedric either didn't hear the first part of her sentence or brushed it off however, because he didn't comment on it. "Uhh, yeah, good," He stuttered and was that a blush she saw? "I was just going to ask if you knew what was going on, y'know with the lights going out and the train stopping."
Saiph saw no reason to lie and told him just what had happened "Yeah actually, I do, there were some dementors on the train. Probably looking for my un – Sirius Black." She hoped to the gods that he didn't hear that slip up, that would be inconvenient, she would probably have to obliviate him then. Cedric grew a shocked look on his face at her words "I knew Sirius Black had escaped and everything, But why would he be on a train to Hogwarts?" He asked the girl. Saiph shrugged and pretended not to know the answer "I don't know, maybe he's looking for Harry Potter, y'know to finish the job" She hinted, then turned and started walking down the hall again, leaving a stunned Cedric Diggory behind her.
She arrived at her friend's compartment to find them talking nervously to one another. She knocked lightly on the cabin window to gain their attention, before sliding it open. She was once again attacked by hugs as she entered the compartment. "We were so worried" Said Daphne "Do you know what happened?"
Saiph sat down and told her friends the story, How on her way back from changing she had bought sweets to apologise to the Gryffindors. How the lights had gone out, and most important how the Dementor appeared and made Harry faint. She left out the bit where the Dementor had ignored her though, even she didn't know why that was.
"He fainted – he actually fainted?" Draco laughed when she finished the story.
There were now only around ten minutes to go before they reached Hogwarts and Saiph was bubbling with excitement.
By the time the train pulled up to Hogsmeade station light was fading quickly from the sky. It was freezing on the tiny platform, rain was driving down in icy sheets, chilling Saiph to the bone. Through the crowd she could see the half giant Hagrid calling out to the first years. She would hate to go out on the black lake in this weather.
Saiph followed the mass of students (having lost her friends long ago) down a rough mud track where at least a hundred stagecoaches waited. The green eyed girl was surprised to see the Thestrals that were pulling them. Who had she seen die?
Saiph approached the skeleton horses wearily holding her hand out to pat them. She probably looked like an idiot to anyone who couldn't see them but she was getting used to it by now. Once her hand made contact with the horse, she was astonished to find it was soft, like velvet. She continued petting the horse, transfixed.
The black haired girl was snapped out of her trance-like state by the sound of a voice crying out for help. Only to find her surroundings completely changed. Surrounding her now was a great big concrete city. She looked to be standing in a quiet alley, away from the main street, but she could still hear the cars going by so she knew she was close. The source of the mysterious voice was a little girl, who was now crying. She sat curled up in a ball behind a big green dumpster, clutching something tightly.
The little girl looked to be homeless or a run away as the clothes she was wearing had holes and dirt on them. Her hair was matted and she had all sorts of scrapes, cuts and bruises running up and down her arms and legs. As Saiph got closer to the girl she realised the thing she was holding was a golden dagger. Cautiously, Saiph knelt in front of the little girl.
"Hello." She whispered as not to startle the girl. The little girl snapped her head up, but something was wrong, she wasn't actually looking at Saiph, she seemed to be looking through her at something else. Curiously, the older girl looked behind her only to find an ominous figure standing in the shadows watching them. The little girl behind her whimpered in fear "No," she murmured holding the dagger shakily in front of her.
Saiph looked down at it in surprise. The dagger was going through her, where it made contact with her body, she became almost transparent. Like a ghost. Saiph turned back to the figure as the little girl's sobs grew louder. It was now standing in front of them glaring menacingly. The figure reached its claws out to them as Saiph gave a shout, and suddenly she was back, standing and petting the Thestral.
She must have been standing there for a long time because when she looked up there were only a few coaches left. She quickly hopped in the one pulled by the skeletal horse she was petting and the carriage started to move.
"Wait!" She heard three voices scream from behind her. Saiph turned to find two redheads and a boy with dreadlocks running to catch up to the carriage. She focused on the carriage stopping as it slowed to a halt. The boys smiled happily at this and climbed onto the carriage, breathing heavily from their run to catch up.
Saiph stared at them as the carriage began to move once more, trying to figure out who they were, and why they looked so familiar to her. She didn't have to spend much time thinking though, as the boys cut through her thoughts to introduce themselves.
"I'm Fred," the one on the right said "that's George, my twin," he said pointing to the boy on the left. "And that's Lee." He pointed to the boy in the middle. There was a short pause and Saiph took this as an opportunity to introduce herself "I'm Saiph, pleasure to meet you." She smiled, holding out her hand for Fred to shake. He took it and shook it gently, opening his mouth to say something before Saiph cut him off.
"Not that I have a problem with it or anything, but what I was wondering was, you ran to catch up to my carriage when there are plenty of other free ones left. Why?" She questioned. Lee took the lead on answering as he cleared his throat and put on a terrible Jamaican accent "life is short, and you are hot" he said, taking her hands in his.
Saiph smiled and laughed at this, getting the reference immediately "A man of culture I see" She joked. Lee grinned at her, "Anything for you, pretty girl."
The rest of the ride to the castle was filled with the sound of laughter and corny pick up lines. It was probably the most fun Saiph had had in a long time. They soon came across the large iron gates that served as an entrance to the school. Floating above them were two more of the cloaked Dementors. Saiph glared disapprovingly at them and to her amazement they glided out of sight, like she had given them an order.
The carriage began to speed up as it climbed the hill up to the castle and Saiph gasped in awe at the sight. The castle was absolutely beautiful and an architectural wonder as a friend of hers would say. Which friend though? The carriage soon arrived at the front of the castle and Saiph stepped out, not before saying goodbye to the three boys of course.
The entrance hall was packed with students as they pushed and shuffled to get to their seats. The sorting came and went. Then Dumbledore stood up to deliver his speech.
"Welcome!" He boomed over the noise of chattering students "Welcome to another year at Hogwarts! I have a few things to say to you all, and one of them is very serious, I think it best to get it out of the way before you become befuddled by our excellent feast…"
Dumbledore cleared his throat and continued. "As you will all be aware after their search of the Hogwarts Express, our school is presently playing host to some of the Dementors of Azkaban, who are here on Ministry of Magic business." He paused.
'Typical Ministry, always jumping to conclusions' Saiph thought as she remembered how uncomfortable some of the students felt in the third book. Hogwarts was like a home away from home too many, and when home isn't safe, nowhere is.
"They are stationed at every entrance to the grounds," Dumbledore continued, "and while they are with us, I must make it plain that nobody is to leave school without permission. Dementors are not to be fooled by tricks or disguises – or even invisibility cloaks." He added. Well, Saiph was definitely going to break that rule, when she wanted to explore nothing could stop her, and what if camp needed her. Camp? What camp?
Dumbledore continued to speak, Wow he speaks a lot, "It is not in the nature of a Dementor to understand pleading or excuses. I therefore warn each and every one of you to give them no reason to harm you. I look to the prefects, and our new Head Boy and Girl, to make sure that no student runs foul of the Dementors."
What's a creature that can possibly harm students doing at a school anyway? Stupid Ministry and Stupid Dumbledore for allowing it.
After that long and rather boring speech, the Headmaster introduced Professor Lupin as the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, and thank goodness for that. Remus Lupin was the only good D.A.D.A teacher in the entire series. And introduced Hagrid as the new Care of Magical Creatures professor, it was time for the feast to begin.
Plates and goblets filled as noise once again flowed through the hall. Saiph wasn't really that hungry so she decided to go to bed early that night. She quickly stood up, walking to the Head Boy and Girl to get the password, then she was off. Her vision became more blurred as she walked through the halls toward the Slytherin dorms, and the next thing she knew she was in bed and out like a light.
