Waiting
Wait for me and I'll come back! Wait with all you've got. Wait when chearless yellow rain whispers that you need not.
It had been a standard mission for Kim and Ron, yet it had all gone so horribly wrong. All they were supposed to do was board the ship and rescue the hostages and it had gone that way at first. The pair had made it onto the ship undetected and made their way to the hostages, it was when they made it that they realized the whole mission was a trap. The hostages were all dead and the pair were suddenly separated as solid steel plates were released from the ceiling forcing the pair to split up. Unable to make contact with Kim or Wade, Ron and Rufus wandered aimlessly through the ship trying to either find Kim or a way out of the ship. It was then that an explosion ripped the ship apart, throwing Ron and Rufus into a wall and the ship began to sink. Struggling, Ron was able to drag himself out and pull himself onto some floating debris.
"Rufus, where are you?!" Ron cried out as he caught his breath. Immediately Rufus crawled out of his pocket in Ron's pants and squeaked "Hiya!" Ron felt some relief as he gently petted his little friend, "You ok buddy?" Nodding his head Rufus squeaked, "Uh huh." Smiling Ron began to straighten his leg before he felt a sharp pain, grunting Ron said, "Great buddy. Let's see if we can find Kim now." After a moment of struggling Ron was finally able to retrieve his Ronnunicator. The screen was cracked and the water tight seal had been broken, pressing every button he could the screen still wouldn't turn on. Getting frustrated and with desperation coming over him, Ron began shouting Kim's name as he used his hands to paddle the debris around. As he was paddling around it began to rain, lightly at first and then it quickly became a torrential down pour.
Wait when the snow swirls fast. Wait when the sun blazes hot. Wait when long days have passed and others have forgot.
After two days of being thrown around by waves and suffering from dehydration, Ron continued to look for Kim. By now Rufus was too weak to leave Ron's pocket and his voice was gone, yet he continued his search. The hot sun scorched his now peeling skin, with only infrequent cloud cover to provide him any temporary relief. All Ron was able to see was water and most of the debris from the ship had floated away. As he tried his best to scour the horizon, he suddenly heard a voice callout, "RON!" Without a doubt he knew it was Kim, Ron tried to callout, but all he could manage was a barely audible squeak.
Ron began paddling his piece of debris in the direction where he thought the cry originated from. Despite how hard he paddled though, he never caught sight of anyone or anything, yet he continued his search. As he searched he began to hear a distant "Thump, thump", yet he paid it no mind, all Ron could think of was finding Kim. It wasn't until the thumping got closer that he realized it was Helicopter he heard. Looking around he was able to spot the copter, which was a U.S. Navy Search and Rescue copter. Using the last of his strength Ron began to frantically wave his arms as he tried to get the pilot's attention. Ron thought he failed until the copter suddenly swerved towards him and began to descend in altitude.
One of the sailors hopped out of the copter and swam over to Ron, "Sir, are you able to swim?" Struggling to speak, Ron said, "I can't, my leg is broken." The sailor spoke something into the radio before he replied, "Don't worry about it sir, we'll get you out of here." The helicopter moved over and began hovering above the pair, a harness was quickly lowered via winch. As the sailor helped Ron into the harness Ron yelled as best he could into the other man's ear, "Where's Kim?" The sailor looked away for a moment before he replied, "I'm sorry sir, but we haven't Ms. Possible yet." Feeling his heart drop Ron yelled with all the strength he had left, "FIND KIM!" and with that last yell he finally passed out.
Wait when from that distant place word does not arrive. Wait when all those you face know I'm not alive.
Ron awoke and looked over to Kim's side of the bed, finding it empty. Kim and Ron had married three month's prior to the boat mission and regardless of the amount of time that had passed, Ron always looked for her when he awoke. Sitting up Ron reached over for his Ronnunicator and turned it on. He was immediately greeted by his friend Wade, "Hey Ron, what's up?" " Hey Wade, I just wanted to know if there's been any progress on finding Kim." Wade suddenly looked solemn and somber, "Ron… It's been nine months since the mission and as much as I hate to admit it, no ones looking for her anymore." Wade could see the little streak of anger flash across his friend's face. "I'm still looking for her and Kim is still out there! Just let me know when you hear something!" With that Ron turned off the little device and set it down.
After sitting on the side of the bed for several minutes Ron began to get up. He knew he'd have to call Wade and apologize for Harshing on him, but that could wait. Reaching past his night stand Ron grabbed the cane he used to get around. During the boat mission he'd fractured his leg in three places and required surgery to have it repaired. Now he was going through physical therapy and hoped to be done with the darn thing soon enough. Walking over to the otherside of the room, Ron gently began knocking on a small doll house in the corner. After a moment Rufus appeared at the door still wearing his nightcap. "Hey buddy, we'd better get ready, we've got a big day ahead of us." Rufus excitedly nodded his head before he ran up his friend's leg and onto his shoulder.
Rufus and Ron spent their morning shopping and then the rest of the afternoon cooking. Ron wanted everything to be perfect and, with Rufus's help, it was as close to perfect as he could get. He had cooked a delicious meal as well as a seven layered chocolate cake and laid it all out on the table before him. Now he sat at the table in a nice suit with an empty chair before him as he waited for Kim.
Wait for me and I'll come back! Wait for me don't fret when they tell you there's no doubt that it's time to forget.
"Come on Rufus, we're goin to be late if we don't hurry." Ron scolded his little friend as he himself struggled to get his jacket on. "Okay, okay." Rufus groaned as he finished the last crumble of his dinner. Running over to Ron, Rufus began to tie the tie that was dangling around his friend's neck. "Thanks buddy." Completely ready the pair rushed to the car with Ron only having a slight limp. Speeding away the pair made their way into the heart of Middleton.
Pulling up outside of the Restaurant, the pair quickly stopped by the valet and made their way inside. Spotting the trio almost immediately Ron made his way over to his family. "Hey Mom, hey Dad, sorry I'm late." Standing up Mr. Stoppable hugged his son. "Think nothing of it. We just ordered our drinks." Mrs. Stoppable also stood to hug Ron, "It wouldn't hurt for you to be more punctual though." Ron ignored his mothers chastation and went over to Hana, picking her up. "Hey Han, how's my little ninja sister doing?" Hana giggled as Rufus crawled over to her, "I'm good brother."
Sitting down the family began chit chatting about this or that. When the time came food was ordered and they continued their talking. "So Ronald, have you thought about dating again?" Mrs. Stoppable asked. Ron in mid swallow coughed and choked a little as he spat out his food. Mr. Stoppable, who'd like wise been enjoying his food, was also caught off guard. Recomposing himself Ron replied, "I'm a married man. There's no reason for me to date." His mom gave him a sympathetic look before saying, "I know Ronald, but it's been two years. You can't wait forever." Ron glanced down for a moment before he replied, "I can and she would." The rest of dinner was spent in an uncomfortable silence.
Even when those dearest to me tell you I am gone. Even when my nearest give up, claiming it's been too long.
Ron made his way up the steps of the rebuilt Possible home, Hana had run up ahead of him and had already let herself in. Reaching the door Ron was greeted by his father-in-law. "Ronald, how are you my boy?" Mr. Possible asked as he pulled Ron into a hug. Ron returned his hug, "I'm doing good Mr. Dr. P." The two men continued to explain pleasantries for several minutes before they made their way to the living room. Hana was already running around playing with Mrs. Dr. Possible and the tweebs, everyone was enjoying themselves. Upon seeing the two men enter Mrs. Dr. Possible stood up and walked over to her Son-inlaw, "How've you been Ron?" she said as she hugged him. Ron went through a similar set of pleasantries with Mrs. Dr. P. as Mr. P. began playing with Hana.
After a couple of hours of playing Hana and the tweebs had worn themselves out and were now watching Snowman Hank on the TV, along with the Possible parents and Ron. As the evening was coming to a close Mr. & Mrs. Possible knew that it was time for them to talk about an uncomfortable subject. "Ronald, your parents wanted us to talk to you about what your plans are for the future?" Mr. Possible asked uncertain. Ron looked over questioningly, "What'd you mean?" Mrs. Possible sighed, "Ron, we know how much you loved Kim and how much she meant to you, but you're still young and you have your life ahead of you." Mr. Possible could see that Ron was about to protest, but cut him off. "Ronald, I know that you still love Kim and that you two were meant to be together, but she would also want you to be happy too." Ron stayed silent for a few moments before he replied, "I'll be happy when my wife is back."
Hours after Ron and Hana had left, Anne awoke to find herself in an empty bed. Looking around Anne could see that the door was open and the hallway light was on. Curious Anne got out of bed and made her way down into the hall. Going down the hall Anne found James sitting in the living room looking at some old pictures. "Honey, come on back to bed." James looked over to his wife, "Do you think we gave up too soon? Ron could still be right, she might still be out there." Tears began rolling down his face as he looked back at the photos. Walking over to James she could see that he was looking at Kim's old pictures. Sitting down, Anne pulled James into a hug, "Honey it's been four years. If she was out there we'd have found her." Softly crying James continued, "I know, but she's our little girl. We shouldn't have given up."
Let's raise a glass of bitter wine to the friend who's passed. Wait, don't share that drink.
Though he hated to admit it, Ron would occasionally use a cane when his leg began to act up. Tonight was one of those instances, it also didn't help that he fell shoveling snow off his driveway. Ron silently cursed himself for not splurging on a better snowblower than the one he got at Smarty-mart. "At least I can show off my new fearless ferret cane to Felix and Zita." Ron told Rufus. The little mole rat nodded excitedly as the two of them entered the reception area. Looking around Ron quickly spotted Felix, "Hey Felix. How's the Groom doing?" Looking up Felix smiled, "Hey Ron, I was getting worried my best man wouldn't show." Ron let out a chuckle, "I wouldn't miss this for the world my friend."
With the conclusion of the ceremony and the end of the speeches, Ron began to relax a bit. He was thoroughly enjoying his steak when he heard a familiar voice, "As good as Bueno Nacho?" Looking up Ron chuckled, "Not quite, but it's still good." Getting up, Ron hugged his old friend, "How've you been Mo?" Monique hugged her friend back, "I've been good, but tell me about you. It's been two or three years now?" Ron thought for a moment, "I think three years, it was after I'd gotten back from the South Pacific." Moniqued nodded, "That sounds about right."
Ron and Monique continued to chat about this and that for the rest of the hour. Eventually the conversation turned to old friends and days gone by. The pair traded old high school stories and college stories, laughing as they went. "You remember that time Kim freaked over me and Felix hanging out?" Monique laughed, "Yeah I remember, I also remember the backwards hat too." The pair laughed again. "Yeah, she really went all in on the Zombie Mayhem look." The two continued to laugh for a bit before they settled down for a while.
As they were sitting Felix began tapping his glass as waiters began passing out drinks. Ron and Monique took a pair of glasses as the crowd settled to hear Felix. "Good evening everyone, the new Mrs. Renton and I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for coming tonight. We know a lot of you have had to travel far and we can't thank you enough for it." Felix then looked to Ron, "I also wanted to thank Ron for, not only being my best man, but for also introducing me to Zita." Felix looked around for a moment as he took a breath, "You and Kim both helped us all out in so many different ways. Even though she's not with us anymore," Felix paused as he composed himself. "I'd like to propose a toast to our friend Kim." Felix raised his glass and everyone followed suit, "To Kim." All drank except for one. Ron set his still full glass back down on the table.
Wait until the last. Wait for me and I'll come back. Cheating every fate.
Ron had worked hard to get everything ready, the table was set, the food in the oven and five black jewelry boxes were set out on one side of the table. Now all that was left was for him to get dressed and ready. He had his best suit set out and a new tie that Hana had given him for his birthday. After he had his white shirt tucked into his pants Ron weaved the special belt Kim had given him for their Halfiversary into the belt loops. Struggling for a few minutes Ron finally conceded defeat and called Rufus over to help him with his tie. "One day I'll figure it out." Ron told his little friend. Rufus gave him a doubtful look before he said, "Uh huh." It was then that the pair heard the front door open, "Hey Rufus can you make sure Hana doesn't eat anything." Ron asked, assuming it was his little sister. Nodding quickly Rufus scurred off as Ron pulled on his jacket. Rounding the corner at the bottom of the stairs Ron saw Rufus standing still and past that he saw the most beautiful woman with Auburn hair and green eyes looking back at him.

She walked up the driveway tentatively unsure of what she'd find. This was her home or it had been five years ago, now she wasn't sure. Five years was a long time to ask someone to wait, especially when the other is presumed dead. Yet here she was, liberated from the island that held her captive for so many years. Reaching the door she produced a key that had helped to keep her hope alive for so long. With shaking hands she inserted the key and turned it, with a click the door was unlocked. Turning the knob she walked in, everything was just as she remembered. Her coat was still hanging up and her shoes were still in their place. Venturing in further she picked up a picture of her and her husband on their Honeymoon. Hearing footsteps coming down the stairs she saw a young man with blond hair round the corner and freeze. Kim froze too, unsure if she was dreaming or if she had really returned home.
Both froze in place not wanting to risk interrupting a most wonderful dream if it was one. After several moments at the exact same time the two ran to each other and embraced one another. Kim and Ron were back together again despite all of the doubting and the fear. Ron and Kim's hope had brought them back together again. Their lips met and they realized with complete certainty that they were not dreaming. That they had indeed beaten the odds and had found one another again.
A nice stroke of luck they'll say, those that could not wait. Only they will never know how amid the strife by waiting for me, my dear, and you saved my life. But the two of us will know how you got me home. Only you knew how to wait. It was you alone!
