Addax had been crying all morning and Sandstone wasn't sure when he was going to stop.
When he had woken up that morning Addax hadn't been crying, yet. Instead, he'd found his friend sitting on the bunk opposite him looking through scrolls about his finances and home. But then the news had come, delivered through three short, simple sentences:
Dear, Addax
I regret to inform you that 6 years ago your wife (Roadrunner) and two of your dragonets, Armadillo and Hawamei, died on the battlefield like true soldiers. I also have to tell you that your third dragonet, Geko, has also passed away, his death being 4 years ago, also during a battle. I'm sorry for your loss.
Sincerely,
General Sandstorm of Queen Burn's Army
"They're gone. They're all gone," Addax had whispered.
And now instead of eating breakfast or chatting about war strategies like the other soldiers, he was sitting next to his childhood friend, trying to calm him down.
Where is she? Addax was thinking. Probably gone like the others - What am I supposed to do - Was this a mistake? - At least I got Sandstone back. His head was dizzying and positively overflowed with grief and sadness and also a little. Guilt? Why did I go with her - should have found my family - maybe I can make up for it.
I wish I could help him. I wish I had had a vision about this, maybe I could tell him… No. Sandstone thought. It's obvious that he's sad but I can't comfort him about this being his fault. I would give myself away, It would be too obvious.
Sandstone had known Addax for as long as he could remember, ever since his weird powers had started to come in. When he was around 1 year old, and Queen Oasis was still alive, his mother met Addax's during a routine patrol. Since their mothers met up so often after their initial conversation they had decided to have their dragonets come along.
The first time he had met Addax, he had been wary at first. His family had come from one of the oasis cities way out in the desert. Because of this, Sandstone had known only a select few dragons his entire life and all of them knew his biggest secret at the time.
He was half-Nightwing half-Sandwing.
Half a year after his hatching his father, Darknight, was killed by a Skywing. When they had moved to the Sand palace, something mysterious had started to happen. Sometimes it felt like he could hear voices in his head, like he was reading minds. Or his dreams would come true. He had already been able to do this but it seemed to get stronger. He had just been really good at guessing and had had the occasional true nightmare. After a lot of research he had realized what this meant. He had the ancient legendary Nightwing powers everyone had thought were real but actually were not! He remembered his hatching very well, even now, the desert sand warming his scales, his mother's voice telling him he could do it, and the two full moons glowing like fireflies up above him- wait!
The moons! That had to be it! His father had told him all about the secret island, the mysterious disappearance of their powers and all the horrible plans they had come up with to get a better home. There was one thing he knew for certain, and it was that where the NIghtwings lived you couldn't see the moons. He'd bet anything that they used to live someplace where you could see the moons and then had moved to their volcano island. But he had something else to puzzle over as well. Why did his powers come in late? Even after all these years, he still didn't know why he hadn't had them since birth but assumed it had something to do with being a NightWing hybrid.
But the reason for his powers and when they'd come in didn't matter. This was terrible, wherever he went his brain was attacked by other dragons' thoughts. He'd had to teach himself how to cope with these headaches, with the most effective method being imagining everyone else's thoughts being drowned out by some repetitive sound, like white-noise.
But this was nothing next to the visions. Though they were sometimes useful, his head felt like it was on fire. He remembered clearly the first potentially useful vision he'd had. He had been having a recurring dream about one of the retired soldiers in the palace. In the dream the soldier had been killed by an assassin. It turned out that this particular dragon was important but Sandstone hadn't figured that out until the soldier had died.
He had long since grown to deal with the feeling of helplessness he got every time he had a vision and couldn't share the results. But, that didn't mean he didn't care. In fact, now he cared more than ever before.
After he had turned ten he had applied to the army as his mother wanted. Things had been going well for him, though he didn't have a family (his mom had died during a battle), until that particular day on patrol.
Everyone had been getting more and more suspicious of him so he was very glad of the deployment. But he had no idea of the danger that loomed over the next few years of his life. The story he had told Addax was missing a few pieces of information. Like the battle he got into, how he saw the Dragonets of Destiny, and, most disturbingly, the new vision he'd been having lately. Though he was never going to tell anyone about that one. Or should he…. He wasn't sure what to do about the new vision, or the alarming fact that it was paired with a prophecy. All he could do right now… was wait.
A/N- Ha! didn't expect that plot twist did you! A chapter from Sandstones perspective confirming his powers.
