The light was beginning to fade as a young woman finally had the opportunity to turn the sign on the door to closed. The juice bar had been slowly but surely gaining popularity, with word-of-mouth being the best indicator as to how many people in London were ready for the eco-friendly, healthy, trendy and most-importantly, tasty juices that were on offer.
Leaning her head back against the cool glass, she sighed.
"If I see another teenager messing about with their juice, I'm going to scream."
The evening rush had been particularly busy this time - lots of teenagers hanging out - and as a familiar face popped up from behind the counter, his smile was enough to raise her spirits somewhat.
"Don't worry about it, I'll clean up here - you've put in enough work today."
Toyah shook her head. "If I stick around, we'll get this lot cleared twice as fast."
In response, Spider threw a rag in her direction, with Toyah catching it with ease, a grin forming on her features.
"Right, let's get to it then!"
It was strange. Leaving Weatherfield with Spider had been impulsive, and considering the last time she had ventured into the big city... Well, it hadn't gone well for her, so to move there on a whim with her ex-turned-friend was a turn up for the books. She was totally new to living in a big city like London, but even so, here she was, genuinely enjoying herself.
She had insisted to Spider that she was going to earn her keep, so she putting her café experience to good use, waiting tables while Spider made the juices.
The rest of the staff had gone home already, so it was just Spider and Toyah left to close up, but neither of them really minded. Ever since they had reconnected after Emily's attack, it had been like nothing had changed. They had both slotted back into the natural feeling of being friends - best friends - and that had been lovely to experience again. No pressure, just a month of enjoying each other's company.
"Crap...!"
A distant voice rose above the low hum of the music playing on the radio - a song Toyah quite place. Rising from the table she was cleaning, she made her way into the kitchen, her brows furrowed in concern.
Spider was bent over the kitchen sink, holding his right hand under the running water. Rushing over to stand beside him, she let out a gasp as her gaze caught sight of blood oozing down his skin.
"What happened?"
His head snapped up - too focused on the situation that he had found him in to notice her entrance.
"I was washing out the blender parts and my hand slipped. I'm fine, honestly."
Shaking her head, she took his hand in her own, examining it closely. At first glance, it didn't seem like there was any serious damage done. The wound wasn't deep, but needed to be cleaned - especially when there was food involved.
"Give me a sec."
Rummaging around in the cupboards, it didn't take long for her to find the first-aid kit. Pulling out a cotton swab and some disinfectant, she sighed.
"This is going to hurt."
The ensuing wince from Spider is the liquid touched the wound was enough to prove her point. After a few moments, she gently patted it dry, and began wrapping it in a small bandage.
At some point, Spider's gaze drifted from the wound to the sight of Toyah's expression - deep in concentration.
"There. Now, all you have to d-"
At that precise moment, Toyah lifted her head, her gaze catching that of Spider's. Only the faraway sound of the radio broke through the heavy silence that formed between the two of them.
Slowly but surely, Toyah closed the space between them, placing a gentle kiss on his lips. She could have pulled away, he could have pulled away, but instead, the kiss deepened. Years of memories flashed by as Toyah's hand cupped his cheek, and...
Spider finally pulled away, reality sinking in. His voice was cautious as he spoke, trying his best to ignore the thundering heartbeat in his chest.
"Toyah... We can just forget about this, y'know. I meant what I said before - no strings attached. I won't hold it against you if you decide for us to stay as mates."
Toyah tilted her head, tears beginning to fill her eyes as she smiled.
"...But I don't want us to stay as mates. Even now, you still make me feel all these feelings - what if doesn't work out?"
Wiping away a stray tear from her features with this thumb, Spider couldn't help but smile back at her.
"Hey, don't worry about it sweetheart, we'll take it slow, alright? As long as you and me are happy, that's all that matters."
They kissed once again, with more meaning this time. When they finally broke apart, Toyah let out a chuckle, her tone playful.
"This probably isn't great for Health and Safety - especially here~"
Spider's lips curled into a grin.
"I'm sure we can come in early tomorrow and finish the rest of the clean-up. I won't tell the boss if you don't?"
Toyah smirked.
"Only if you make it worth my while~"
