chapter 1

It was June 1st when it all started, it seems things just seemed to have bounced off track. Even though things were going so smoothly since the start of the New year and the start of new lives for these people to say the least. In December is when eight families moved to Fort Worth with their young children. They and their children hadn't met yet. The children were in different classes to finish off the school year. They hadn't met yet but destiny says they are going to meet soon very soon.

These children were nine and had just finished 3rd grade.. They were very unsure and felt alone in their new home and school. They didn't have any friends in their new home. They even struggled to make friends in their old home. Little did they know they were going to meet and become the best friends for life.

These kids also shared some things in common including a birthday.

The Flamezer Family which was Heatwave the father and husband who worked as firefighter and manage to get work at the local fire station after his wife Quickshadow a pediatric nurse got a job offer to work at Cook Children's hospital. They had their nine year old son Hot shot who was going to start fourth grade in the fall and was going to be 10 on July 14th.

Hot shot is a very active boy. He loved to run, jump, climb and do sports. He played basketball, soccer, swam, karate, ran track, and baseball. Hot shot was very athletic. He loved to get his heart pumping, getting sweaty and working his body. He also ate plenty of healthy food so he could have the energy he needed to do his sports. He liked others things besides sports, he also loved video games, he play Nintendo games all the time, like Pokemon and Kirby. He was looking forward to when he turned ten so he could play more Kirby games which were rated E 10 plus. His tenth birthday was very soon and he was asking his parents for new Kirby games. Hot shot was also helpful around the house. He did all of his chores and he kept up with his homework. Hot shot was also saving his allowance for things like sports stuff, and video games. He was very good about it. He was lonely he really wanted some friends to play games and sports with he was lonely. Little did he know what was going to happen in his life and soon he was going make seven life long best friends.

The Windal Family which was Hardwind the father and husband who worked as a cop and just got transferred to Fort Worth, Windrush the mother and wife who worked as a pilot for the Cook Children's helicopter ambulance. They had a nine year old daughter named Whirl who was going to be in fourth grade in the fall and was going to be ten on July 14th.

Whirl is a very energetic and kind girl. She had lots of energy and enthusiasm. She loved to play video games from Nintendo, Kirby and Pokemon were her favorites. She ran track, swam and skateboarded. She did all of her chores and homework like she should. She would save her allowance to buy things that she wanted. She also loved to go to baseball games. She was a wonderful girl. She was lonely she didn't have any friends, and wanted some to play with and hang out with. Little did she know what was going to happen in her life and soon she was going to make seven life long best friends.

The Towver family was Hightow the father and husband who was now working at the main office building of the business where he worked, Linecross the mother and wife who was a stay at home mom and kept things running around the house. Hoist was their nine year old son who was going to start fourth grade in the fall he was going to be 10 on July 14th.

Hoist was a kind and very shy boy. He was very smart and wasn't too good at speaking up for himself. But he had a big heart and was willing to help others and over come his fears. Hoist liked making things with his hands, dinosaurs, science, seeing baseball games, and playing Nintendo games Kirby and Pokemon. He would save his allowance to buy things he wanted to get and he worked hard by doing all his chores and homework to earn it. He was a fine boy. He was kind of lonely because he had no friends and he wanted to make some to play with and to talk too. Little did he know what was going to happen in his life and soon he was going to make seven life long best friends.

The Redden family was Redcross the husband and father a doctor who just started at Cook Children's hospital, Medicaid the mother and wife who also is a doctor who just started at Cook children's, Ratchet the brother of Redcross who lived next door and was also a doctor at Cook Children's hospital. Medix was the nine year old son of Redcross and Medicaid, he was going to start fourth grade in the fall and was going to be 10 on July 14th.

Medix was a smart boy with high function Autism. He talked a lot and didn't understand a lot of things that were being said to him. He was also sensitive to loud noises, touch, smell, and taste. But he was very good student. He loved to read, play board games, draw, go to baseball games and play Nintendo video games Kirby and Pokemon. He was good about doing his chores and homework and saved his hard earned allowance for things he wanted. He was sad and lonely because he didn't have any friends and he hoped to have some friends soon so he could have someone to play with and hang out with. Little did he know what was going to happen in his life and soon he was going to make seven life long best friends.

The Shoveler family was Dugout the father and husband was a construction worker who got a job to work for a company in town, Brushstroke the mother and wife was an interior designer. They had four sons Heavyload who turn 17 on January 3rd and going to be in 12th grade in the fall, Gridlock who turned 15 on March 12th and going to be in 10th grade in the fall, Hightower who turned 13 on April 4th and going to be in 8th grade in the fall, and Wedge who was going to be in 4th grade in the fall and who was going to be 10 on July 14th.

Wedge was a smart, strong and brave boy. He loved to build things and work with his hands. He did have a bit of a temper though and sometimes didn't think before he would speak. He was good at school and kept up with his homework and chores and saved his hard earned allowance for things he wanted. He loved to play sports, draw, make things with his hands, to build things with his brothers, watch baseball games and play Nintendo video games Kirby and Pokemon. He was kind of lonely even though he had his brothers to be with they preferred to hang out with their own friends. Wedge didn't really have any friends and he hope to have some so he could have someone to hang out with and play with. Little did he know what was going to happen to him and soon he was going to make seven life long best friends.

The Blazer family was Highheat the father and famous track star, Burnlight the wife and mother who is a famous fashion designer who started a business in town after getting opportunity to do so. They had a son named Scorch who was going to be in 4th grade in the fall and was going to be 10 on July 14th.

Scorch was an active boy much like Hot shot. He loved to run, jump, and climb just as much as Hot shot. But a bit of show off. He also loved to play sports too. He worked hard on his school work, chores and saving his hard earned allowance. He also loved jokes and pranks, he loved baseball, and play Nintendo games Kirby and Pokemon. Scorch was lonely and didn't really have any friends. He hoped to have some so he could have someone to do sports, play and hang out with. Little did he know what was going to happen to him and soon he was going to have seven life long best friends.

The Bushlit family was Ranger the husband and father who was zookeeper that got transferred to the Fort Worth zoo, Backbrush the wife, and mother and a elementary school art teacher. They had their nine year old daughter Brushfire, who was going to be in fourth grade in the fall and was going to be 10 on July 14th.

Brushfire was energetic, and outdoors type. Brushfire loved to be outside with nature, she loved animals, and plants. She loved everything about Australia where her and family came from before they moved. She was a good student and hard working at her chores and saving her hard earned allowance. Brushfire loves plants, animals, being outdoors, baseball, and playing Nintendo video games Pokemon and Kirby. Brushfire was lonely, she really didn't have friends to do things she loves with or hang out with. She wished had some to do so. Little did she know what was going to happen to her, and soon she was going to have seven life long best friends.

The Maxston family was Levi the husband and father a stay at home dad, Martha the wife and mother who was a veterinarian and had her own clinic. They had their nine year old daughter Hannah, who was going to be in fourth grade in the fall and was going to be 10 on July 14th.

Hannah was sweet and playful and was high functioning Autistic. Hannah loved animals and playing with them. She loved to learn and was a great student. She did her chores well and saved her hard earn allowance. She loved to go to the zoo or aquarium, she loved to shop, bake, baseball, and playing Nintendo games Pokemon and Kirby. Hannah was lonely, she really didn't have any friends. She wished she had some friends to play video games with or hang out with. Little did she know what was going to happen to her, soon she was going to make seven life long best friends.

It was now June things had been going well. School had let out and now the kids were ready to enjoy their summer. However things were getting a bit hard.

Hot shot wasn't feeling well he had been feeling tired, had a fever that wouldn't go away, had pain in his lower left leg and was limping. Quickshadow checked him over that day and saw he didn't look to good and she and Heatwave decided to take him to Cook Children's hospital to be looked at. Hot shot took Roxy a plush rhino that was his favorite toy. He was a bit nervous about going to the hospital but he knew they could find out why he was sick and how to make him better.

Whirl wasn't feeling well she had been feeling tired, had a fever that wouldn't go away, had pain in her lower left leg, and was limping. Her parents were concerned and decided to take her to Cook Children's hospital to be looked at. Whirl took Penny a plush penguin that was her favorite toy. She was kind of nervous about going to the hospital but she they would find out why she was sick and help her get better.

Hoist wasn't feeling well either, he had been feeling tired, had a fever that wouldn't go away, had pain in his lower left leg and was limping. His parents were worried and decided to take him to Cook Children's Hospital to be looked at. Hoist took Tina a plush T-rex that was his favorite toy. He was scared and nervous about going to the hospital even though he knew they would find out why he was sick and help him get better.

Medix wasn't feeling that good at all, he had been feeling tired, had a fever that wouldn't go away, had pain in his lower left leg, and was limping. His worried parents decided to take him to Cook Children's hospital to be looked at, because they were quite concerned. Medix took a plush bat called Mr. Flappy that was his favorite toy. He was kind of scared to go to the hospital but he knew it was to find out why was sick and to help him get better.

Wedge wasn't feeling too well at all either, he had been feeling tired, had a fever that wouldn't go away, had pain in his lower left leg and was limping. His worried parents took him to Cook Children's hospital and they left Heavyload in charge of the house and Gridlock and Hightower until they got back. Wedge took Daisy a plush tortoise which was his favorite toy. He was a bit scared about going to the hospital, however he knew it was to find out why he was sick and how to help him get better.

Scorch wasn't feeling well at all himself, he had been feeling tired, had a fever that wouldn't go away, had pain in his lower left leg and was limping. His worried parents took him to Cook Children's hospital. Scorch took his Chester his plush Cheetah with him that was his favorite toy. He was a bit scared about going to the hospital, however he knew it was to find out why he was sick and how to help him get better.

Brushfire wasn't feeling good either, she had been feeling tired, had a fever that wouldn't go away, had pain in her lower left leg, and was limping. Her parents were concerned and decided to take her to Cook Children's hospital to be looked at. Brushfire took Katie her plush Kangaroo which was her favorite toy. She was kind of nervous about going to the hospital but she they would find out why she was sick and help her get better.

Hannah wasn't feeling too well herself, she had been feeling tired, had a fever that wouldn't go away, had pain in her lower left leg, and was limping. Her parents were concerned and decided to take her to Cook Children's hospital to be looked at. Hannah took Emily her plush elephant which was her favorite toy. She was kind of nervous about going to the hospital but she they would find out why she was sick and help her get better.

Once at Cook Children's Hospital they got checked in at the emergency department and they saw there were a lot of kids there. Some were hurt and others were sick.

Hot shot, Whirl, Hoist, Medix and Wedge saw each other. They came up to each other.

"Hi I'm Hot shot Flamezer," Hot shot said.

"Hi I am Whirl Windal," Whirl said.

"Hi I'm Hoist Towver," Hoist said.

"Hi, my name is Medix Redden," Medix said.

"Hi, I am Wedge Shoveler," Wedge said.

"Hi, I am Scorch Blazer," Scorch said.

"Hi, I am Brushfire Bushlit," Brushfire said.

"Hi, I am Hannah Maxston," Hannah said.

"I'm here because I feel sick and my lower left leg is painful," Hot shot said.

"Me too," Whirl said.

"Same here," Hoist said.

"I am here for that reason too," Medix said.

"I am also here for the same thing," Wedge said.

"I am here for that too," Scorch said.

"Crikey me as well," Brushfire said.

"I am here for the reason too," Hannah said.

"Talk about small world," Hot shot said.

"Yeah too small," Wedge said.

Then they were called back one by one. They were seen by doctors who took a look at them. The doctors listened as the parents explained the kids symptoms. The doctors then examined the legs and got concerned.

Hot shot, Whirl, Hoist, Medix, Wedge, Scorch, Brushfire, and Hannah and their families were told some tests were going to need to be done. They were going to need X-rays, MRIs, Bone scans and biopsies to find out what is wrong.

The X-rays of their legs didn't take too long it only took a few minutes it wasn't so bad. The MRIs and Bone scans took a bit longer and they had get IVs to get things put in them so the pictures would show up better.

For the biopsies they were nervous but the doctors told them they were going to make them fall asleep so they wouldn't feel thing. Once they were asleep they did the biopsies and began to run tests on the samples to find out why these kids were sick.

Hot shot, Whirl, Hoist, Medix, Wedge, Scorch, Brushfire, and Hannah were now waiting in hospital rooms to get the test results. The a doctor came into each of their rooms and told some shocking news.

Hot shot, Whirl, Hoist, Medix, Wedge, Scorch, Brushfire and Hannah all had Ewing Sarcoma a type of bone cancer and needed treatment.

The kids and their families were all sad and scared.

But the kids were ready to be brave.

The doctor explained their treatment plan which was chemotherapy, radiation therapy and surgery. The doctor explained the side effects of chemotherapy and radiation and how they were going to take the Chemotherapy through a tube in their chest called a Hickman line. They were told the different types of surgery, such as limb sparing, rotationplasy, and amputation and which one they were going to do depended on the tumor and how involved it is and how is responds to treatment and the preferences to the patients and their families.

They all understood and were ready for it.

They were made to fall asleep again and were given their Hickman lines and they saw each other again and told each other their diagnosis.

"Talk about small world again," Hot shot said.

Whirl, Hoist, Medix, Wedge, Scorch, Brushfire, and Hannah agreed to that.

"Let's fight this together," Hot shot said.

"Yeah," Whirl said.

"We can do it," Hoist said.

"Yes fighting together sounds like a fine plan," Medix said.

"I agree let's all kick cancer's backside together," Wedge said.

"I think we can," Scorch said.

"Yes we can fight it hard," Brushfire said.

"Yes and we are going to win it too," Hannah said.

Then they all joined hands on it.

Now they were ready to fight cancer together and win!
