Brett

I pulled into Chicago Med's E.R entrance.

I turned the sirens off.

I got out of the driver's seat.

I opened the back doors.

Evan

I arrived at Chicago Med.

I had informed the Deputy Chief, Halworth that one of the Paramedics from 61 got injured in the line of duty.

He told me to help out the other 61 Paramedic.

That included until Violet is back up on her feet.

I approached Ambo 61.

I helped Brett unload the gurney.

"Hey!"

"What?"

"Don't let these fuckers take my leg."

Brett laughed.

"If that's what they have to do-"

"Am I just supposed to walk around with a prosthetic on?"

She scoffed.

"Be able to hear me coming from miles away."

"Oh, God. I should have given her Morphine. Knocked her ass out."

"Now, what is that gonna do, Brett?"

"It would've calmed her."

"Now, it's not."

We rolled the gurney into Chicago Med.

"Name?" Maggie questioned, not looking up.

"Violet Makami."

She looked up.

"Holy shit."

"Evan."

"Maggie."

"Sorry. I will get Dr. Marcel up here. Have him take a look. Tell you what the best thing to do is."

"Mm."

"Marvelous." Violet replied.

"Come on, Violet."

"Room 4."

We rolled the gurney into Room 4.

"One, two, three."

We lifted the backboard onto the hospital bed.

"Grab the board. Grab the board." I told Brett, turning Violet on her side.

She cursed at me.

Brett slid the backboard out from underneath Violet.

"Got it."

Crockett walked in.

"Throw her back."

I turned her on her back instead of her side.

"So, what happened, Violet?"

"Debris from a stupid falling building landed on my leg."

"Now, how did that happen?"

"I might've shoved Evan and a victim out of the way."

"You saved two lives. Something you should be proud of."

"Mm."

"And be mindful of collapsing buildings, Chief Hawkins."

I laughed.

"And as you can see, the slightest hit from a piece of falling debris can cause a lot of damage."

"Just get it over with."

"What?"

"I'm a Paramedic too. Don't treat me like a moron."

"I can see one of the reasons he's attracted to you."

"I'm not an idiot?"

"Well, I think everybody knows that."

"Can you feel this?"

Crockett was feeling up and down Violet's leg.

"No."

"I'm gonna talk to your boyfriend for a minute. And we'll be right back."

"I'm not an idiot. I'm not gonna say it again."

"Thank you for telling me again."

"I know what you're tlaking to him about."

Crockett shut the door.

We both laughed.

"Wow. I thought Will was exaggerating about how-"

"Cocky she can be?"

"Yeah."

"So, what's going on?"

"If she can't feel anything in that leg, I'm worried it's gonna spread onto the other one."

"Mm-hmm."

"It needs to be removed. As soon as possible. For her to have any chance of having a prothetic."

I looked in the room.

Brett and Violet were talking and laughing.

"If you don't make the decision soon, she will bleed out."

"Give me the papers."

Crockett had handed me the papers that Maggie gave to him.

I signed "Evan Hawkins" in cursive on the dotted lines.

I handed the papers back to him.

We walked back in.

"Are you taking my leg?"

"I am."

Violet nodded her head.

"I'm sorry."

"I know. Thank you for making the right decision."

"I don't wanna lose you."

"You're not going to. Not now. Not for a long time. I promise."

Violet took my face in between her hands.

"I would do that all over again. Even if we got the same results."

I nodded my head.

"We do have to prep her for surgery. You can wait in the waiting room."

"Okay."

I kissed her on the forehead.

We walked out of the room.

Crockett

We had prepped an O'R.

We had put Violet under general anesthesia.

We rolled her into the O.R.

I cut off Violet's leg.

It was above the knee.

I smoothed the uneven parts of the bone.

I sealed off her blood vessels and nerves.

I cut and shaped Violet's muscles so that a prosthetic could be attached.

"Get her transferred into the ICU.'

"Right away, Dr. Marcel."

I walked out of the O.R.

Evan

Boden had arrived.

He sat with us.

"So, what's going on?"

"Um... Violet's leg is being amputated."

"Jeez. That's terrible."

"Yeah."

"Makami?"

I stood up.

"How is she?"

"Violet's amputation went great. She didn't lose that much more blood during it. So, she doesn't need a blood transfusion."

"Okay."

"We'll get her fitted for a prosthetic in a few days. We want the stitches to dissolve first."

"Okay."

"But she is gonna be fine. More than fine."

"Can I see her?"

"Violet is currently getting transferred into the ICU. That's gonna take a couple hours."

"Okay."

"But I'll come grab you when she's in the ICU."

"Thank you."

"Of course."

Crockett walked away.

"She'll always be our Violet. Just a little bit more breakable for the time being."

"Do not make that joke to her. She won't find it funny like us."

The three of us laughed.

Violet

I woke up in a pure white room.

I squinted my eyes to get adjusted to the fluorescent lighting in the room.

I looked around the room.

I saw Crockett standing in the corner.

"Ooh. Look who's uo."

I looked down.

My left leg was gone.

The only thing left was a stump.

"I'll go get your boyfriend."

"Mm-hmm."

He walked out.

I rolled my eyes.

Evan

Crockett returned.

I stood up.

"The surgery went well. And she's resting comfortably. But Violet is groggy and tired right now. So, how about you just for now?"

"Thanks, Crockett."

"Of course."

I followed him back to her room.

Crockett pushed open Violet's hospital room door.

She was examining her stump.

"Violet, look who I found."

"Ooh. Evan."

We hugged.
