AN: This is what watching all the Scream movies during your hiatus does to a man.
"Don't go in there, the killer's waiting outside!"
Kara groaned, keeping her eyes on the screen. "Karen, calm down. It's just a movie."
Karen turned to her. "Yeah, but I don't want anyone dying!"
Kara just rolled her eyes. "Yeah, well it's a slasher."
The girls were currently having a sleepover at Babs's house. It had been a pretty busy week for the girls, with a bunch of supervillains popping up again, Metropolis nearly exploding at least twice, and constant pop quizzes. So, Babs decided to rent a movie for them to all watch. It was called Scream 6, the latest in a slasher film franchise. Babs hadn't watched any of the last ones, but this one was pretty newbie-accessible. Right now, the main character was running away from the killer, screaming at the top of her lungs.
"God, this movie is a little over-the-top," Zee muttered, throwing some popcorn into her mouth. "I'm personally more into elevated horror."
Kara smirked, still keeping her eyes on the screen. "A bit fancy, Zee."
Diana, for her part, just scratched her chin. "Why does she not just jump out the window? It would provide a quick escape."
Jess groaned. "Not everyone is superhuman, Diana." Under her breath, she muttered, "Which I could say for us at the moment, unfortunately."
Babs had overheard it, though she hoped no one else heard it. Earlier that day, they had fought Casey Krinskey again. Unfortunately, her powers had grown stronger, and even after they beat her, Diana, Kara, and Zee apparently wouldn't get their powers back for a day. She tried not to let it bother her. Surely Metropolis could survive without them for one day. But then again, she really wanted to fight crime.
Before she could realise that she was forgetting to pay attention to the movie, her phone rang. The rest of the girls looked at her. "I'll get this." With that, Babs walked into the kitchen and held the phone up to her ear. "Yello?"
"Hey," came the voice. It wasn't one she recognised, and it was slightly deep. "Am I speaking to… Barbara Gordon?"
Babs smiled. "Yep, that's me. Babs Gordon." Then she blinked. "Wait, how do you-"
"Oh, I know one of your friends," the voice responded. "Barry Allen. We were chatting about you at Sweet Justice. I'm trying to relay a message to him. He's not responding to my texts so maybe he'll listen to you."
Babs frowned, getting a little suspicious. "Uh… okay."
"What are you doing at the moment? You busy?"
Babs smacked her lips. "I'm just watching a scary movie."
"Really?" The voice had perked up. "Do you watch many scary movies?"
Babs sat on the kitchen table. "Occasionally, yeah. I'm really more into detective and action movies."
"Oh, okay." The voice had grown quieter. "Now, here's my question…" When he spoke again, his voice had dropped an octave and acquired a rasp. "What's your favourite scary movie?"
Babs blinked. Was that what Barry wanted to ask her? "Well… I'd have to say Summer Of Danger III. Super good shaking-up of the formula."
"That one?" The voice had taken on a sneering tone. "A bit of an odd choice, I will admit."
"Hey, it's my opinion." Babs sat on the table. "And besides, it's super good. I would go over it in excruciating detail, but I need to hang up. I'm watching a movie, remember?"
"No, wait," The voice said. "Come on, can't we talk for a little bit longer?"
"Nope, I really don't wanna miss what happens next." She started towards the living room. "Listen, maybe I'll call again and-"
"No, you listen, you redheaded bitch!" The voice had suddenly become hateful. "Hang up on me and I'll hang you by your oesophagus!"
Babs froze. She will admit, that did make her hesitant to hang up. "W-What?" She whispered.
"You heard me, girl." The voice had gone back to creepy whispering, but in the place of the awkward pleasantness was a smug, taunting, but still creepy sneering. "Now… we're going to play a game."
Babs wet her lips. "And that is…"
"A trivia game!" The voice cried out in delight. "And make sure to answer the questions quickly, because I'm in your house."
Babs frowned. "Wait… like in Scream?" She folded one of her arms. "Seriously?! Are you trying to do the movies in real life? Come on, dude. That's lame."
That's when it hit her.
"Wait, you're inside my house?!"
"That's right." The voice had become even more smug. "So… time for that game…"
Babs gulped. "O-okay. What's the first question?" She tried to calm her nerves. She was super smart. She could solve his questions. Especially if they were Gotham related.
"Okay… First question: what is Leatherface's family name?"
Babs clicked her fingers repeatedly. "Um… it's-"
"Oh, and by the way, you call the rest of your dumb friends, I'll set the whole place on fire."
Babs's eyes burst open. "What?! How do you-"
"Tick-tock, tick-tock, tick-tock… Answer the question!"
Suddenly, the answer popped into her head. "Sawyer! They're the Sawyers! That's the answer, right?"
A pause. Then came the voice. "Correct."
Babs grinned. "Ha! Take that!"
"Babs?" Jess's head was poking out of the living room. "What's going on?"
"Remember what I said."
Babs offered her best smile. "Nothing, Jess!" She ran upstairs. "Nothing at all." When she got to her room, she sighed. "Alright, what next?" She paused. "And… why are you even doing this?"
"Why not?" The voice let out a chuckle before quickly calming down. "Okay then… Next question: which slasher movie villain wears a William Shatner mask?"
Babs smirked. "Michael Myers. From Halloween." She folded her arms. "Come on, dude. I've watched that movie, like, twenty times!"
"No need to brag," the voice replied. "Anyways, final question… Who is the main protagonist of the Scream franchise?"
Babs's smirk grew wider. She knew this, and she hadn't even seen any of the movies with said protagonist in them!
"Cindy! Her name is Cindy!" She pumped her fist in the air. "Hah! I got you, weirdo!"
Silence on the other end. Then came the voice.
"Oh, I'm afraid that's incorrect, Babsie…"
Babs felt her heart sink. "W-What?" Her eyebrows arched down. "No! I'm right! Her name's Cindy! I heard my friend mention it and-"
"No, you're thinking of Scary Movie!" The voice had suddenly become vicious. "The shitty parody of the Scream movies! The answer was Sidney Prescott!"
Babs scratched the back of her head. "I mean, Scary Movie is pretty crappy…"
"Whatever," the voice sneered. "Either way, looks like someone's gonna have to die…"
Almost instantly, Babs's throat tightened again. Oh, God. This… this had to be a joke, right? There wasn't any actual way some creepy maniac was hiding in the house, threatening arson, and saying that he was going to kill someone!
But then again, this was Metropolis… and he did know what she looked like.
Gulping, she lifted the phone back up to her ear. "Where. Are. You?" She was trying to sound as fearless as possible. No answer for a few seconds. But then…
"Right behind you."
Babs quickly whipped around. Just as she did, her closet burst open, and a dark shape leaped out. She tried to dodge, but something cold and metal found its way into her shoulder. She yelped as she fell onto her lower bottom bunk. Now, standing above her, was her attacker: a dead ringer for the killer in the very movie she was watching. Ghostface.
Babs glared at him. "Why are you doing this?!"
Ghostface merely tilted his head, breathing heavily. He removed the knife from Babs's shoulder, making her groan, and raised it up…
"What the hell?!"
Babs and Ghostface looked at the door. Zee and Karen were standing in the doorway, eyes wide and mouths open. With the exception of Ghostface's heavy breathing, everyone was silent.
At least until Zee glowered at him. "Who the hell are you?" She walked up to him. She didn't seem to have noticed the stab wound on Babs as she continued to castigate Ghostface. "Y'know, usually I'd think you were Kara, but she's downstairs watching the movie. So, I'm just left to assume you're some creepy stalker for Babs over here."
Ghostface merely continued to stare at her, tilting his head again. Babs looked down at the hand clutching the knife. It was tightening.
Babs's eyes widened. "Zee! He's-"
She didn't get to finish before the knife found a new place in Zee's stomach. Zee's eyes went wide as she looked down at the knife. Her mouth opened, yet no sound came out. She crumbled to the ground, softly moaning and clutching her stomach.
Karen, meanwhile, was beside herself in horror. She let out a scream and kneeled down next to Zee. "Zee! Oh my god!" She looked up at Ghostface. "What did you-"
Ghostface responded with a quick left hook, knocking her out cold. He then removed the knife from Zee's stomach, making her gasp, and dragged Karen over to the window.
Babs didn't know why she didn't do anything. All she could do was stare in horror at the masked terror. What was she doing? She was Batgirl! Suit or not suit, tech or no tech, she wouldn't let her friends get hurt!
She stood up, hissing in pain. She glared at Ghostface, who was raising his knife up to bring it down on the helpless Karen. Rolling up her sleeves, Babs let out a scream and ran forward.
She collided with him with enough force to send him toppling out the window.
When she heard the thud, and once the adrenaline wore off, she looked out the window. When she saw him lying on the ground, she got worried that she had killed him. But she saw his chest rising and falling. He was alive. Breathing a sigh of relief, Babs made her next decision: to ring the authorities. She pulled out her phone and dialled the number. After a few seconds, she got onto someone.
"Police Department, what's your emergency?" Came a calm female voice.
"Me and my friends were attacked." Babs kept her voice as steady as she could. "I got stabbed in the shoulder, my friend got stabbed in the stomach. We need an ambulance and a police car for the intruder."
"Okay, okay, we'll dispatch right now," the woman said. "What does the attacker look like?"
Babs walked back over to the window. "He's wearing a white mask, black robe and…"
She trailed off when she looked down. The spot where Ghostface was… was empty.
He was gone.
Eventually, she found her voice and informed the woman of this fact. Afterwards, she patched Zee and herself up, just as Diana went upstairs to check on her.
However, even as the authorities showed up, even as her friends and dad offered condolences, even as she and Zee were taken into the ambulance and she heard them say they should be fine… one question still racked her brain.
What was that?
Who was that?
AN: Good thing for Ghostface that they were depowered, am I right?
