Tiana sat at the kitchen table, reading before the sun came up.

"Good morning, Tiana, you're up early!"

"I have a history test today, Mama, and I wanted to read the chapter one more time."

"Anything interesting?" her mother asked.

"It's about the exploration of Florida," Tiana explained, "and supposedly Ponce de Leon and his men were searching for the fountain of youth, but I don't think that really happened."

"Well, I suppose they never found it," her mother agreed.

"But can you imagine? Spending all that time in a swamp, just to find some magic cure?"

"People will do a lot for magic, sometimes."

"But the bugs!"

"Do you remember the story about the magic healing flower? I think we still have that book on the shelf somewhere."

"Oh, Mama, this is for history, I'm not talking about fairy tales!"

Her mother sighed, and Tiana went back to skimming her history book.

Her mother began making herself some breakfast, and sat down at the table.

"Look at the time!" her mother exclaimed. "Don't you need to get going?"

Tiana looked up. "Oh! You're right!"

She jumped up from the table, and grabbed her school bag and tossed the history book inside.

"Do you have your lunch, Tiana?"

"Of course, Mama!" Tiana said, grabbing a bag from the counter.

"Have a good day, then, and good luck on your history test!" she said with a kiss on her daughter's cheek.

"Thanks! I'll see you tonight!"
