Chapter 1
"A Few Words About Weddings"
I just want to say a few words about weddings, I've just been through one. Not my own, although I wish I was getting married. But, this wedding in particular was a very special one for me, not just because Queen Seraphina's oldest son married the girl of his dreams. You see, this story is about the father of the bride, whom I once was a bitter enemy to a long time ago.
If you had followed my previous adventures, then you know just exactly whom I am talking about.
However, I think it's best to start at the beginning, don't you think? Excuse me while I remove my headdress. There now, that's better.
Oh, who am I you may ask? For those who don't know me, my name is Angelina Mouseling, prima ballerina and friend to all, well, mostly everyone. Good thing the Pinkpaws didn't participate in the wedding.
…
To get back to the beginning of the story, it all started about a month ago, shortly after I had attended my first wedding as a witness. You see, Miss Lilly's nephew Yuri had just married the girl of his dreams, the daughter of Boris, the captain of the Royal Stiltson. From the gathered witnesses, I saw two hearts becoming one.
"By the powers vested in me and the good citizens of Chipping Cheddar," declared the minister. "I pronounce you mouse and wife."
We cheered, some of us cried, but it was a wedding that was only the beginning for me.
"Well, that was a really nice wedding, Angelina," my mum said during the reception. "Who knew Miss Lilly's nephew was such a talented dancer?"
"It runs in the family, I guess," I chuckled. "At least he and Olga now have a chance to be together forever."
All I could do at that moment was sigh in content of the atmosphere I found myself in. There's something about weddings that makes a girl mouse like me feel…more than normal. The dresses, the decorations, the music, everything about it.
"It's too bad we don't go to weddings more often," I said. "They are so much fun."
"So was our wedding," my dad replied, holding my mum's paw. "Right, Matilda?"
My mum blushed at my dad's reminder of their own special day. But, there was something else about weddings that were much more than just the celebration.
"Angelina!" I heard my friend Alice call. "Come on, the Dacovian sailors dance is starting!"
Getting up from the table, we joined Alice and her parents along with the rest of the guests, surrounding the dance floor, as Yuri and his friends from the Dacovian navy did their dance, the same dance we did to free ourselves from that iceberg.
Eventually, for old time's sake, we all joined in as well. Even Miss Lilly and her new lover, Boris, the Captain of the Royal Stiltson joined in the fun.
"Oh, Boris," laughed Miss Lilly. "You are such a wonderful dancer, darlink!"
"So are you, Lilly!" laughed Boris. "So are you! I am so glad to have meet you and your students!"
…
Once the reception was over, we made our way back home, but just as we were about to walk into our house, I couldn't help but notice a golden envelope sitting in our mailbox.
"Hey look!" I cried as I went over to the mailbox. "Where did this come from?"
"Must be something important," my dad remarked, inspecting the envelope. "It's for you, Angelina."
Excitedly, I debated about whether or not I should open it, but I didn't want to spoil the moment right then and there.
"Let's go inside and open it," I said, urging my parents inside. "It's getting a little chilly out here."
Once we got inside, we all saw Grandma and Grandpa fast asleep on the couch as they were over watching Polly. A further thought came to my mind that perhaps it would be best to wait until the morning.
"Um, on second thought…" I said, trying to not wake up Polly who was asleep upstairs. "Goodnight, Mum. Goodnight, Dad."
Kissing both of them goodnight, I made my way up to my bedroom and changed out of the pink dress I wore to the wedding and into my gray nightgown. But, I still kept the golden envelope next to my bed. If this was a golden envelope, then it meant something big was happening. I mean, after all, who doesn't get a golden envelope at least once in their lives?
…
The next morning, I woke up and took the envelope downstairs to the kitchen. Mum, Dad and Polly were already at the table waiting for me.
"Well, good morning, Angelina," my dad acknowledged, kissing me on the cheek. "Sleep well?"
"Yes, although I wonder what is in here."
Sitting down at the table, I took the envelope and opened it carefully, excited to find out what was inside. Inside, the parchment inside was also gold and it was an invitation, but not just any invitation.
"King Ferdinand and Queen Seraphina are pleased to announce the wedding of their son, Prince Reginald of Mouseling to Ivanka Operatski, daughter of Ivor Operatski at the royal palace of Mouseland on May 1st."
Taking my eyes off the parchment, I couldn't believe it that I was being invited to another wedding following Yuri's wedding.
"That's wonderful that Prince Reginald is getting married!" my mum remarked. "Queen Seraphina and King Ferdinand must be delighted!"
"And there's something else written on here," I added, reading the handwritten words at the bottom of the invitation. "PS, Angelina, please come to the wedding and be a bridesmaid with us along with Alice. Phoebe will be a flower girl and we want your cousin, Henry, to be the ring bearer. Love, Princess Valentine and Princess Sophie."
For a moment, I could feel myself becoming heavily emotional with happiness. I was selected to be a bridesmaid along with Alice at the royal wedding of Prince Reginald!
"Oh, congratulations, Angelina!" my mum cried, coming over to embrace me. "We are so proud of you! Our beloved Angelina, a bridesmaid!"
"And Alice is too," added my dad. "Not to mention Henry as the ring bearer."
"Well, what are we waiting for? There's so much to do!" I said, quickly hasting to the door. "I need a dress, a corsage, a headdress…"
"Angelina," chuckled my mum. "The wedding isn't for another few weeks, there'll be plenty of time for that!"
But I couldn't contain my excitement and set out for Alice's house to relish in the news of our selection.
…
Both Alice and I met halfway between our houses and embraced one another. Imagine, me and my best friend, being bridesmaids at probably the greatest event in Mouseland since…who knows when?
…
However, little did any of us know that at his home in Dacovia, Mr. Operatski was trying to process the idea of his daughter getting married. He was happy, but at the same time, he was struggling with his own emotions.
"Ivanka, engaged to Prince Reginald?" Mr. Operatski wondered as he walked onto the balcony overlooking the sea. "My only child, getting married. If only you were here to witness this, Ivana and Ivan."
Suddenly, Ivor felt his chest tighten and he clutched it. You see, we didn't know it at the time, but Mr. Operatski had something going on inside of him that would act up whenever he became stressed. Furthermore, there was a personal tragedy Mr. Operatski experienced not too long ago that was more than likely going to impact this wedding.
In other words, this wasn't just about a wedding. It was also about gaining a newfound respect for the mouse that I once despised when he came to Chipping Cheddar and denied me the role of Cinderella one Christmas as well as, at least in my view, tried to propose marriage to Miss Lilly.
