(Perry and Della are married for this one)
Della Mason sighed and rolled over. The bed seemed enormous without her husband in it. She pulled the blankets closer and tried to get a few more minutes of sleep before the alarm went off.
Perry Mason had to go to New York with a client to try to settle a case. The trip was only supposed to last two days, but it had turned into five. Della had stayed in Los Angeles to take care of the office.
"I'm sorry I can't be home," he told her regretfully over the telephone.
"It's all right, Perry," she had told him.
"But I'm missing Valentine's Day!"
"I will still be your valentine!"
But Della secretly was a little disappointed that they could not be together for their first Valentine's Day. The alarm clock went off and Della began her day.
As she opened the apartment door to leave for the office, she found a bouquet of roses arranged in a crystal glass vase sitting on the floor by the door. The card said "Be my valentine? Perry". A smile lit Della's face as she hurried over to the phone to call Perry long distance to thank him.
"I found your present you left me!"
"Did you like them?" Della could hear the pride in Perry's voice.
"I love them! They are just beautiful!"
"Only the very very best for Mrs. Mason!" Perry smiled.
A few more romantic things were said before Della hung up and dashed to the office.
It was a very busy day for the secretary. Several people knew Perry was out of town, but they for sure that he would be back and were calling to see if he was. Della answered the phones, answered some non important mail, and informed Harold Dowless that when Perry Mason returned and was back in the office, she would call him and let him know, and he need not keep coming back everyday. Despite the fact that she had been busy, Della was surprised when Gertie poked her head in.
"If you don't need me, anymore, Della, I'm gonna go home now. We haven't had anymore calls in awhile, and even though it is going on three, I have to go take care of my mother."
"Go ahead, Gertie! I didn't realize it was already three."
The receptionist nodded goodnight and left. Della was left alone in the office. She went to Perry's office and pushed open the door. She could almost imagine him sitting in his chair. The telephone rang and startled Della out of her daydream.
"Perry Mason's office, how can I help you?" she said professionally.
"Della! This is Perry," though she knew that from the sound of his voice, "Listen, how'd you like for us to be together on Valentine's Day?"
"Really?! Are you coming home?"
"No, I can't come, but you're coming to New York."
"Wha...?"
"Your plane leaves at three-fifteen. I had your friend Linda pack your suitcase and there is a taxi waiting to take you to her at the airport. You'd better be here before midnight, or you're fired!" he told her playfully.
"Aye, aye, Chief!" she gave a solute, even though he did not see it, "I love you, Perry!"
Della flew around the office, turning off lights and locking the doors. The taxi was indeed waiting for her. Linda met Della at the airport and handed her her suitcase.
"Have fun!"
Della made the plane with three minutes to spare. She settled into the seat, smiling, excited to see her Perry.
~~~~~P+D~~~~~
It was eleven-twenty New York time when the plane finally landed. Della adjusted the hands on her watch to the correct time and waited impatiently for the passengers to be allowed to depart.
"Thank you for flying with us!" the stewardess said cheerfully.
Della have her a distracted smile as she scanned the crowd for Perry's familiar face. She got her suitcase, and still there was no sign of her husband. She was about to call his hotel when she heard,
"Della! Della, over here!"
There he was! She ran over to him and he whirled her into a hug. I suppose there were several amused passersby, but Perry and Della did not notice.
"Welcome to New York, Mrs. Mason!" Perry smiled down at her.
"Why thank you. I had an excellent travel planner."
"And," Perry moved his arm to look at his watch, "You made it here before the end of Valentines Day."
"Happy Valentine's Day, Darling," Della whispered, her eyes shining.
"Happy Valentine's Day, Sweetheart!"
Perry picked up her suitcase and tucked his other arm around her, and lead her out of the airport to a waiting taxi.
Happy Valentine's Day!
