Warning! I actually only ever played Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami, so I'll try to keep any lore callbacks to a minimum. The rest of my knowledge of Yakuza lore is based on my time watching some Yakuza 4 playthroughs on youtube and the occasional half-assed wiki-reading.

Besides, this is mainly a Madoka Magica fanfic.

Current date: 18 March 2011

Junko Kaname was a meticulous and hardworking businesswoman. It certainly made a few of her coworkers envious of her achievements. Unfortunately, this includes her current employer, who thought it was a good idea to send her to be a part of a three-way business negotiation between the company she worked for, the local Yakuza faction of Mitakihara, and a shady construction company from out of town.

The only reason Junko even agreed to this idea is that she was promised a substantial promotion…should the business go smoothly. And if she were to succeed in this, then perhaps her employer wouldn't dislike her anymore.

Don't get her wrong, her employer doesn't like her, but that doesn't mean he hates hates her. It's just that the seed of doubt about Junko's capabilities still lingers in his mind, and if she succeeds in this next job of her, then she would truly, without a shadow of a doubt, prove her mettle and worth to her company.

…In retrospect, all this does is remove a relatively minor annoyance from her work. But it was already too late to back down now, for her destination – a surprisingly well-kept abandoned warehouse – had come into view.

Slowing down her car, she was approached by some shady-looking men. Junko, who had spent the entire trip steeling her nerves, opened her window for the checkpoint.

"Halt! What business do you have here?" one of the men, just some guy with sunglasses, asked.

Junko curtly answered. "I'm here for the business negotiation."

"Ah- You must be…" the man paused to look at his phone, seemingly looking for something. "Junko Kaname-san, right? Please, go on through."

"Thank you." Junko answered with a smile.

How could she not smile? Compared to Kazama-san, these goons don't feel as threatening as they should.

Junko Kaname was an orphan at Sunflower Orphanage, and therefore had the chance to be around Shintaro Kazama, who, as the owner of the orphanage, was also a Yakuza of substantial position. For a moment, Junko wondered what happened to Kazama-san and her fellow orphans while she was away. She was still around when her little brother figures, Kazuma Kiryu and Akira Nishikiyama, begged Kazama to let them be yakuza. But Junko was not around long enough to see how that ended up for them.

She sighed. "Well, no time like the present."

When Junko accepted this job, she knew that she would be coming alone. She could have just simply refused this job from the start and left it to her employer to sort it out on his own. What drove her into thinking that this might even remotely be a good idea? Was it her pride? Or was she just that confident in her capabilities? Regardless, she now sat face to face with each representative of each faction that had attended this meeting.

To her left, was a surprisingly young eccentric man, wearing a crying clown mask, that went under the (rather fitting) pseudonym of "The Tragic Clown", Captain of the Borei Family. A local of Mitakihara.

And to her right, was a man wearing an eyepatch and a construction helmet. This man was Goro Majima, President of Majima Construction, which in reality…

Junko narrowed her eyes. She could blatantly see the tattoo on Majima's chest. "Is this 'Majima Construction' really just a front? For all I know, this Goro Majima may really turn out to be a patriarch of his own Family."

Majima, however, noticed her staring. "We haven't even started yet and you already got your eyes on my pecs? Naughty naughty, Kaname-chan."

Despite Junko being on her own, while both Captain and President were escorted by at least three dozen men, Junko merely harrumphed in response. "I just didn't expect your side to be Yakuza as well, Majima-san."

Unsure – and slightly worried – of where this meeting was already developing into, Clown interjected his thought. "Ah, well, that's not going to be a problem, will it?"

Junko coolly shrugged. "I hope not. So, let us begin, shall we?"

Getting comfortable on his seat, Clown began. "Alright. Kaname-san, I would first like to begin by asking you something."

"And what is it?"

Junko could tell that Clown anxiously stared at her behind his mask. "About the stockpile of small arms that we had ordered previously…They did arrive at the intended destination, correct?"

Junko still had no idea how her company managed to gain official permission to legally sell firearms. She couldn't be bothered enough to question it though. "That is correct." she nodded, before she caught up to the possibility of that being not the end of it. "What's wrong? Did something happen to them?"

Clown remained silent, seemingly unsure as to spill out the problem on his end.

"It's just...well…"

And then he went silent. The silence dragged by the second.

Majima tch'd. His patience was running thin. "Spit it out already, man! The suspense is killin' me!"

As if broken out of some sort of a trance, Clown finally answered. Hints of anxiety still linger in his voice. "Right, well, to put it simply, all of our firearms are gone."

Majima only seemed slightly interested in that. "…What?"

The same couldn't be said for Junko Kaname.

"ALL OF THEM?!"

It can't be helped. Organizing nearly the entire part of the small arms delivery had been her job, and now they're just saying that it's all gone. To say that she was annoyed would be a great understatement.

"And we didn't know where it went." Clown continued.

After managing to keep herself calm, Junko asked. "And your first idea was to inquire us about it?"

Clown scratched his head. "Well, it wasn't exactly our first idea overall, but it is our first reasonable idea."

"What do you mean by that?"

"Some of our members, even a few of the high-ranking ones, suspected that the guns were stolen by a ghost." Clown hesitated, before he continued. "Due to the fact that, somehow, even under subtle yet constant surveillance, the guns still disappeared in a blink of an eye."

Majima shared a glance with Junko, and asked. "…And where do we fit in in all this?"

Clown looked directly at Junko. "Well, despite the great material loses, we could still easily afford to replace all the guns that were lost from your company," he then tore his gaze away to Majima. "As well as hire Majima Construction to install more advanced security measures to keep our armory safer in the future."

With a gesture, a couple of Clown's underlings stepped forward, each one with a bag full of cash.

Despite the mask on his face, nearly everyone in the room could feel that Clown was smiling warmly behind it. "We are willing and capable of paying both parties upfront."

After that surprisingly successful business negotiation, her employer called, nervously asking about how it went, and rewarded Junko by allowing her to go home early.

Had the situation been different, Junko would have refused the offer and kept on working for the rest of the day. But now she could feel her bravado steadily waver away while on her way back home.

Yeah, she certainly earned this one.

As her car approached the Kaname residence, she noticed her husband meeting a guest in front of their home, a man that seemed familiar to Junko.

Tomohisa Kaname was preparing an early dinner when he heard that her wife would be coming home earlier than usual. He was already done with chopping all the ingredients for this evening's meal, but then he heard a knock on the front door before he could turn on the stove.

If it was his wife, she would have simply entered already, so this must've been a guest.

Opening the front door, Tomohisa was greeted by a man with a seemingly eternal frown on his face, the man's utility jacket keeping him warm in the climate of early 2011.

"Can I…help you?" Tomohisa asked calmly.

"I heard there's someone here who could help me with something." the man responded.

"Help you with what, exactly?" a woman's voice suddenly asked. A voice that Tomohisa naturally recognized to have belonged to none other than his wife.

When the man turned around to face the newcomer, his eyes very slightly widened, while Junko gasped when she recognized the man in front of her.

"Kazuma-kun?" Junko Kaname asked, to make sure that she wasn't seeing things.

"…Junko nee-san?" Kazuma Kiryu asked in return, clearly not expecting to see a fellow orphan from the old days here of all places.

Junko was not smiling. Not because she was unhappy to see him, she was just too shocked, is all. In fact, she was actually quite happy to see that Kiryu is alright after all these years, despite his choice of…career.

Kiryu was the first to break the trance by stating his intention on why he was here. "I was told that someone here could help me with some information."

Junko raised an eyebrow. "…Let's discuss this a little further, inside."

Kiryu nodded.

They decided to sit around the dinner table to have their discussion.

"You know him?" Tomohisa asked her curiously.

Junko seemed like she was trying her best to contain her giggles. "Well…remember that story I told you where two of the orphans where I came from literally begged in the rain to be a yakuza?"

"You told me that not too long ago, yes."

"You're meeting one of them right now." she answered with a smirk.

Kiryu scowled. "Hey! You were going around telling people that story?"

Junko giggled. "I couldn't help myself, Kazuma-kun. It was a little funny."

In retrospect, Kiryu somewhat agreed. "Heh, I guess so."

Kiryu then introduced himself to the other man in the room. "You must be Junko's husband, right? I'm Kazuma Kiryu."

"I'm Tomohisa Kaname. A pleasure to meet you, Kiryu-san." Tomohisa answered with a smile…before he realized a minor detail that somehow slipped his mind. "…Wait, you're a yakuza?"

"I used to," Kiryu corrected him. He then moved his gaze towards Junko. "But that's not what I'm here for. I heard from a friend of mine that you're a go-to for information broker in Mitakihara."

Indeed, the company that Junko worked at actually started an information brokering business fairly recently, courtesy to her.

Sipping her drinks, Junko clarified. "Well, that business is barely out of its infancy. Actually, you would be our first customer ever."

"Excuse me?"

"It's not like there's any other information broker in Mitakihara, which was the reason why I started one in the first place."

"Hmm…" Kiryu digested the fact.

Putting her mug down, Junko asked in a straightforward manner. "So, what do you need?"

"My daughter is missing." Kiryu replied with an equally straightforward answer.

"You have a daughter?"

"Adopted daughter, actually. Haruka Sawamura, 14 years old." replied Kiryu, while he tossed a few photos of the missing girl onto the table. "The reason why I got here in the first place was that she was last seen in Mitakihara. But ever since I got here, I haven't actually seen her here yet."

Junko collected the photos, working hastily to memorize the girl's characteristics. "Alright, I'll get started with collecting information regarding her whereabouts."

Kiryu nodded in approval. "Thank you. How much will it cost?"

It didn't take long for Junko to name her price. "Well…Although some funds would be helpful in the search. I won't charge you."

"Why is that?"

She gently gripped the photos. "You're like a brother to me, Kazuma-kun. Which means that would make Haruka my niece, right?"

"Hmph, I guess you're right. thank you, Junko nee-san." Kiryu thanked with a grateful smile.

Junko smiled. "Don't mention it. Say, how about you stick around for dinner while we do some catching up? My husband is a great cook, and it would be a shame if you missed out on it."

Kiryu nodded, his smile slightly faltered. "Sure. But keep in mind, it's not all sunshine and happiness."

While Tomohisa cooked dinner, he at the same time earnestly listened to Kiryu's life story while the man was catching up and exchanging stories with Junko. Kiryu sure wasn't lying when he said that it wasn't all sunshine and happiness. Sometimes, Tomohisa had to stop to wonder how Kiryu managed to endure it all.

Junko, of course, cried when she heard what has happened to Kazama, Nishiki, as well as some of the other orphans that got involved in Kiryu's struggles. But at least those sadness are somewhat mended when Kiryu started talking about all the new friends that he had met, as well as the orphanage that he himself currently ran in Okinawa.

However, some part of the story sounds so bizarre and nonsensical that Junko couldn't help but laugh despite her puffy eyes. Kiryu insisted that at least most of them are still true, despite how crazy it sounded.

While Kiryu was talking about the more recent events in his life, the front door opened.

"I'm home!" a voice of a young girl called out from the front door.

Junko perked when she heard her daughter. "Ah, Madoka! Just in time for dinner."

"Mama? You're home earlier than usual." said Madoka Kaname, who did not expect that the whole family will be having dinner together for once. She then noticed the newcomer sitting in the room. "Who's this?"

"I'm Kazuma Kiryu." he answered. "You didn't tell me I have a niece as well."

"Niece…?" Madoka muttered, having heard that last bit.

Junko smirked. Any trace of her crying was virtually unnoticeable. "Yeah, well, it was your turn telling your life story, not mine. Also, I have two kids." she replied proudly. "Madoka, can you bring Tatsuya over for dinner?"

Putting her pondering aside regarding the man who indirectly claimed to be his uncle, Madoka nodded. "Hm!"

As they watched Madoka walk upstairs to fetch her baby brother. Junko asked Kiryu something without looking at him. "Say, Kazuma-kun, do you think Haruka and Madoka would get along well if they ever meet each other?"

Kiryu nodded. "Yeah, I'm sure they would."
