A Sitch in Time: Secrets of Panem

Chapter 2

District 13

Gale stepped forward excitedly.

"You… you know where they are?" he said, cautiously hopeful.

"I know where they are. Or, more accurately, I know when they are. Or… Well, anyway, I found them," Beetee responded, turning to type again into the console. "Your 'vanishing into thin air' comment gave me an idea. It's never been proven, but it certainly isn't impossible."

"What isn't impossible, Beetee?" President Coin pressed, a bit impatient.

"All it would take are very specific conditions replicated in two places at the exact same time…" Beetee continued.

"Beetee," Gale placed a firm hand on the older man's shoulder. "Get to the point. Please."

"Right. Yes, well, as I was saying, the conditions had to be perfect. And these conditions existed in the arena at the exact time that Katniss's arrow struck the force field." Beetee turned again to his two comrades. "Katniss and Finnick were transported to another dimension."

Coin and Gale stared at Beetee.

"Another… dimension?" Coin began hesitantly.

"Precisely," Beetee responded. "I'm not sure if it's the distant past or an alternate universe, but regardless, Katniss and Finnick are no longer in our temporal locale. The science is quite dense, but I was able to trace Finnick's tracker to another location with similar conditions on the night the arena exploded." He pointed at the green dot on the screen. "There."

Coin and Gale leaned closer, their brows furrowed.

"Middleton… Colorado?" Gale said.

"I feel like I've heard that name before," Coin mused. "A long time ago."

"As I said," Beetee continued, "I don't know if it's our dimension's past or another universe entirely. But we know where they are. And I believe I can contact them."

Gale straightened, all business. "Well, what are you waiting for? Do it. Before Snow's team figures this out, too."

Possible House, Middleton, Colorado

Anne Possible flopped onto the couch, her arm over her eyes.

"Another tough day?" her husband asked, coming to sit next to her.

Anne sighed and nodded.

"Did you find out anything more about those two patients?"

She shook her head. "They're being kept under sedation for now. They're much too violent otherwise. But I can't get something out of my mind."

Before James could ask her to elaborate, their teenaged daughter entered the room. Kim paused when she noticed her mother's expression.

"Mom… everything okay?" she asked.

Anne gave a tired smile. "I'm sure it will be, Kimmie. Just another rough day at work."

"Want me to ask Wade to do a search on those two unidentified patients?"

"No, thanks, honey. I'm sure something will turn up."

As if summoned, Kim's Kimmunicator beeped. "Speak of the devil." Kim kissed her parents, then headed up to her room, pressing the button on her watch to answer the call. "Hey, Wade. What's the sitch?"

Instead of his usual greeting, Wade cut right to the chase. "Uh, Kim? You remember when you were telling me about those two patients of your mom's?"

"Yeah… did you find something on them?" Kim's brows furrowed, unused to the straightforward nature of the young tech guru.

"Not me… Global Justice."

"Global Justice? How did they know about this?"

"Well – why don't I just let Dr. Director explain." Wade's image was replaced by that of the eyepatch-wearing head of GJ.

"Hello, Kimberly," Dr. Director greeted.

"Dr. Director. What's up? What's going on?" Kim was becoming increasingly concerned about her mother's safety. If GJ was involved, those two patients of hers must really be dangerous.

"I hear your mother has been treating a Jane and John Doe at her hospital this week."

"Yeah, but how did you know about that?"

Dr. Director ignored the question. "I believe we may have some answers as to their identities. We received this communication earlier this morning. Brace yourself – it's a strange one."

The image faded and was replaced once again, but this time by an older woman with pin-straight gray hair wearing what looked like a military-issue boxy gray tunic. "Good evening. My name is Alma Coin, president of District 13 in the country of Panem." Kim raised an eyebrow. She had never heard of "Panem" before.

"I am aware you may have never heard of us before. This is because, as our leading scientist in 13 has explained, we are not from your dimension. There's no time to get into specifics, but it has come to our attention that two of our citizens have found themselves in your universe, and it is vital that we get them back to us as soon as possible. The fate of our nation depends on it."

Kim's mind was swimming. It all sounded so crazy, but she knew firsthand the existence of other dimensions. And this woman was so serious that Kim had a hard time believing this was a prank.

"Along with this message, you will be receiving the information required to contact us again. We beg your assistance in locating Katniss Everdeen and Finnick Odair and returning them to us. May the Mockingjay rise again."

The screen went black and returned to the image of Dr. Director. Kim realized that her mouth was hanging open in shock, and she quickly checked herself. "Well, that was a 12.9 on the weirdness scale."

"Agreed," Dr. Director replied. "But knowing your past with other dimensions and universes, as well as your mother's proximity to these two, I figured we should loop you in and get your assistance."

"Of course," Kim said. "So, what's our next step?"

"First, we need to speak to Miss Everdeen and Mister Odair. Then, we attempt to contact this President Coin."

"I'm on it." Kim hung up with Dr. Director, then went downstairs.

"Uh, mom? I have some information that you might need… and I need your help."

"Sir, we found them." President Snow turned from the update on the rebellion to see Egeria entering, a smile on her face.

"Excellent, Egeria. Where are they?"

Egeria hesitated. "It's… complicated, sir. We have scientists from District 3 here to explain it."

Snow listened impatiently as the twitchy man and woman from District 3 explained alternate dimensions and universes and timelines. He didn't much care about the science of it all. He only wanted to know one thing.

"How do we get them back?"

"That's where we're stuck, sir," the man from District 3 said. "We know how to contact others in that dimension, but we're not exactly sure how to transport to and from there."

"But we're working on it!" the woman piped up nervously.

"In the meantime," Egeria interjected, "might I suggest an option?" Snow waved his hand, motioning for her to continue.

"This dimension seems to be rife with, shall we say, uncouth individuals. People who might be willing to aid us for a price."

"Go on," Snow encouraged.

"I've located one in particular who attempted to take over the world with an army of robots. Almost succeeded, too. Someone who might be willing to ignore certain laws of that dimension in return for information that might aid him on his own quest."

Snow tapped his steepled hands against his chin. Although he preferred people obey laws – his laws, more specifically – he had to admire someone who had the guts to take what they wanted. It was what he did, after all. And as long as he got the Mockingjay, he didn't care about the laws in this other dimension.

"How do we establish communication?"
