A Sitch in Time: Secrets of Panem

By LuvPurple99

Chapter 3

Remote Lair, Somewhere in the Caribbean

Dr. Drakken paced the length of his lair for the tenth time. It had been a while since his last scheme, and he was restless for a new plan for world domination.

"Dr. D, if you keep pacing like that, we're going to need a new floor." Shego didn't look up from her magazine as she spoke.

"Nrrrgg… Shego! We need a plan."

"Hey, you're the evil genius here. You come up with the plan." Drakken was about to make a retort when the main console began flashing static. The two villains stared curiously at the screen as an image slowly appeared.

An older man with a snow-white beard and wearing an impressive suit began to speak. "Good evening… Dr. Drakken, is it?"

Drakken, though pleased his reputation preceded him, responded suspiciously. "Yes… and you are? And how did you bypass my security system?"

"The details are not important at the moment," the man responded. "My name is Coriolanus Snow, president of Panem."

"Panem? Never heard of it."

"I assumed that would be the case. No matter. I've been informed that you have dealt with alternate dimensions before."

Drakken winced. He still had nightmares about Mr. Sit-Down.

"It's also been brought to my attention that you desire power in your dimension. I believe we might be able to come to some sort of agreement. You help me, and I help you."

The idea of power had Drakken's attention. "And what kind of 'help' are we talking about here?"

"There's no way you could have known this, doctor, but I'm a powerful man. I am the absolute ruler of our nation of Panem. I have successfully squashed any rebellion that has attempted to rise up against me. I have technology that might benefit you in a similar pursuit. So, you get me what I want, and I give you the blueprints to some of our most powerful weapons and surveillance technology."

Drakken rubbed his hands together greedily, but before he could agree, Shego interrupted. "Hold on, there, Snowflake."

"Snow," President Snow corrected, irritated.

"Whatever. What's the catch? You give us these great and powerful weapons – what do we have to do?"

"Ah, yes, of course," President Snow mused. "You see, two of my citizens have found their way into your dimension. All you have to do is return them to me here in Panem. I'm certain a genius such as yourself could manage that simple task, am I right, Dr. Drakken?"

Drakken puffed up his chest, his ego inflated. "That shouldn't be a problem at all, President Snow."

Shego gave her boss the side-eye, then turned back to the old man on the screen. "That's it? Two citizens? There's got to be more to this you're not telling us, Pres. Why do you care about two random citizens?"

"You are intuitive, aren't you, miss…?"

"Shego."

"Well, miss Shego, you are correct. These aren't just average citizens. Katniss Everdeen and Finnick Odair are in fact criminals bent on wreaking havoc on our fine nation. As I mentioned before, rebellion here is dealt with swiftly and fairly. There's no telling what these two could do unchecked. They do possess certain combat skills that might pose a slight challenge, but nothing I'm sure you couldn't handle."

Shego was still suspicious, but she let her boss make the final say.

"You have yourself a deal, President Snow."

Middleton General Hospital, Middleton, Colorado

Dr. Possible escorted Kim and Ron down the hallway. "They should be awake soon. They are still restrained, at least for now." Kim was silently grateful for that. After everything her mother had told them, she was expecting hostile greetings.

When they entered the hospital room, Kim did a double-take. The girl couldn't have been older than she was, but the boy… he was gorgeous.

"Uh, Kim?" Ron elbowed her, slightly annoyed at her staring.

Kim shook her head. "What? Oh, yeah, uh… sorry, Ron."

Several minutes passed before the two figures in the hospital beds began to stir. The girl – Katniss – was the first to open her eyes. Instead of hostility, though, she just looked sad.

"Why do we have to keep doing this? Why don't you just get it over with and kill us already?" she said, her voice hoarse.

Dr. Possible was the first to speak. "We know who you think we are, but you're wrong. You are not in the Capitol."

Finnick's face looked hopeful. "13? Are we in District 13?"

Katniss glanced over at him, confused. "What?"

"You're not in District 13. At least, not yet," Kim interjected.

"Not yet? What are you talking about?" Finnick asked.

"Katniss, Finnick… you've somehow been transported to another dimension," Dr. Possible concluded. The two stared at the trio of strangers.

"Another… dimension? That's not possible," Katniss countered.

If the situation had been lighter, Kim would have taken the opportunity to inform the other teen of her family motto. But now wasn't the time. "We were contacted by someone from your dimension… President Alma Coin?"

Finnick and Katniss's faces were blank.

"She told us who you were, where you're from. She says it's important we get you back, and we need to contact Beetee to do it," Kim continues, carefully watching for their reaction.

"Beetee?" Katniss says. "He's alive?"

In response, Ron handed Kim a tablet. At the push of a button, Beetee's image flickered onto the screen. But not just Beetee…

"Gale? Haymitch? Plutarch?" Katniss couldn't believe what she was seeing.

"Good to see you, Catnip," Gale quipped. His smile faded when he noticed the restraints. "Hey, why is she tied up? Let her go!" Dr. Possible stepped forward to release the teen from her restraints before doing the same for Finnick.

"That was probably my fault Gale… I thought we were in the Capitol," Katniss admitted.

"Always a fighter," Haymitch added. Kim thought his words sounded a bit slurred.

"Haymitch, what's going on?" Finnick said.

"Well, it seems Katniss here managed to royally screw up the plan," Haymitch responded.

"I didn't know there was a plan," Katniss said through clenched teeth.

"Doesn't matter, sweetheart. Point is, we gotta get it back on track. And that means getting you two back to our dimension and inside District 13. We've got a rebellion to join, and Katniss? You're the poster child."

Katniss's head swam with all this information. A rebellion. A plan. District 13.

Finnick noted Katniss's confusion. "The plan was always to get you out, Katniss. You're the Mockingjay. People have been rallying around you. You lit the spark. Now you need to spread the inferno."

"But why didn't anyone tell me?" Katniss bit back.

"You're not exactly the person I'd trust with secrets, sweetheart."

No, Katniss thought. But Peeta was.

Peeta.

"Haymitch, where's Peeta?"

The smug look dropped from Haymitch's face. "After you hit the force field, the arena exploded. It was insanity, Katniss, absolute insanity. Like Finnick said, our number one goal was to get you out."

"Haymitch. Where. Is. Peeta?"

Haymitch opened his mouth to respond, then sighed, resigned. "He's in the Capitol."

Katniss's ears started ringing. Peeta. In the Capitol.

"You son of a bitch!" she screamed, Kim and Ron wincing at the language and the sheer fury behind the words. "You promised! You promised me you would save him! Now they have him! What do you think they're going to do to him, Haymitch?"

"Miss Everdeen, I sympathize with you, but in all fairness, you were always our mission. You are going to be the one to lead this rebellion," President Coin interjected.

Katniss had never met the woman, but she already didn't like her. "You want a leader? Then you should have saved Peeta."

The room was silent for several long moments before Haymitch spoke again. "Might as well get the rest of the bad news over with. Finnick, they got Annie too. And Johanna."

"Annie…" Finnick whispered, his eyes suddenly far away.

"Great job, Haymitch," Katniss spat. "Who royally screwed up now?"

"Katniss, there's something else you need to know," Gale said.

Katniss was suddenly alert again. "Is Prim okay? My mom?"

"They're fine," Gale said. "I got them out in time."

"Got them out? They're… they're not in Twelve?"

Gale gave her a look Katniss recognized too well. It's the look he gave wounded animals right before he put them down. "Katniss… there is no District Twelve."
