A/N. REVIEWS!
"I find it very amusing that his awareness of the world is similar to that of a toddler's. Totally approve of this chapter, I'm sure everyone is interested in his backstory. but other than receiving Artemis's blessing, I wonder what other abilities he possesses... I guess only time can tell.
I think you should try to describe things a bit more. The chapter is good, but it feels...rushed?
With that out of the way, I think this is a great chapter. Wish you a happy new year!" -RagingFusion
Thank you. I think it fits since he was only just created. He's like that in this chapter too, since you know, he's been in the woods for four thousand years.
The only other abilities he has is basically godly strength, reflexes, and durability. So… yeah. Everything else he has is Artemis related stuff.
Alright man. Let's see how I did in this chapter!
Thank you, happy New Year!
"While I'm not a fan of Guardian fics, especially this particular "All gods have a guardian" approach, this definitely shows some promise. Percy isn't reincarnated as he usually he is, which is overdramatic. No unnecessary hatred from any of the sides, as we normally see. Artemis and her hunters don't hate men. At least not to the usual extent.
I especially like how the story is divided into how Artemis and Percy (along with the Hunt) became friends, and the other on how they will start a relationship. We won't really have to wait a lot for it.
I am curious, why is Percy connected to the ocean? Is he a demigod of Poseidon? Also, Sally is in the story. I wonder what her role is?
Also, I believe the Big Three oath isn't in place? No prophecy? I certainly wouldn't mind an original plot." -Le Connoisseur
Well thank you. I like being the exception to things. Percy isn't connected to the ocean, he just likes it. Like me, I love the ocean, but I'm not connected to it. As for Sally, she's just a cameo. A thing for readers to point out like that one Leonardo DiCaoprio meme. (The one where he's sitting, then snaps his fingers, pointing at something offscreen?) Nope, no Big Three oath, no Great Prophecy. This is like, entirely AU. Only reason this is Percy Jackson fanfiction is because Percy is in it. (And the Gods too, if that counts) Anyways, hope you continue to enjoy!
"...Wait, so Orion is The Gigante? I thought he was Poseidon's son. Which one is it?
Also, the chapter was ~amazing. Will be waiting impatiently for more." -KryptonWrites
Both. It just depends on the myth/story. In the books, he's a Gigante, like in this story. Other stories, he's a son of Poseidon. (Fun fact, the giants Eplialtes and Otis, the gigantes who kidnapped Ares and trapped him in a jar, are sons of Poseidon in some myths too. As well as that story of Artemis jumping between them and them killing each other is one of their myths too!)
Thank you, hope you enjoy this one!
Also, sorry to everyone for this chapter taking forever. I actually had it done a week ago, but Zaeng_ has been really busy and we had technology problems. I had to have her read it on my laptop at school, and then screenshot the rest bit by bit and send it through Instagram. I actually finished two chapters, so zi'll post Chapter Eight in like a day or two, just to make sure no one misses a chapter!
Onto the chapter!
Chapter Seven
"I might know someone who can make you immortal again."
"Who?"
Percy was silent for a beat. "The Fates."
Artemis was silent for a beat. "Percy, you can't be serious. They have a terrible price!"
Percy shook his head. "It'll be fine. I just need to make an offering big enough to please them."
"Do you have anything like that?"
He nodded. "I have one thing."
He walked around the temple to the front, Artemis following behind him. He entered the temple and walked into his room. He reached under his bed and pulled out a trunk. Artemis looked at it confused, Percy, on the other hand, closed his eyes. His hands were trembling as he opened his eyes again and slowly opened the trunk. Within the trunk, were 2 items that made their blood run cold. The head of the Chimera and its pelt, both in the same condition as when he first earned them. Whatever magic that kept them intact had been doing its job well.
Artemis covered her mouth with her hands. He had kept those trophies all this time. She had wondered what he had done with them since she hadn't seen them anywhere around the temple.
His shaky hands picked up the trophies and held them to his chest to keep them from dropping. He stood up and turned to Artemis. He wordlessly walked out of the room and down the hallway towards her shrine. She followed him. He turned to her and handed her the items. He got on his knees and rolled up the rug that sat on the floor before the altar. Underneath was a trapdoor. He pulled up on the handle, revealing a staircase that went down.
Artemis had no idea that there was a basement underneath her temple. There wasn't any when it was first raised, which means that Percy had made it himself.
They walked down the stairs, ending up in a large circular room. There was a sigil carved into the stone floor. It took up most of the center of the room. The sigil was a circle with the Fates true names, written in symbols not known to any language of man, present, past, or future. On the wall were four torches, facing each of the cardinal directions. The ceiling was painted in an image of the three Fates spinning a person's life.
Percy took the Chimera's head and pelt from Artemis and laid them down in the center of the sigil. He stood outside of the circle, Artemis slightly behind him to his right. He closed his eyes and tilted his head down. His head bobbed as he mouthed words to himself, like he was practicing.
He finally opened his eyes again and looked straight ahead. "Morai, Morai. Weavers of Fate. Clotho, the Spinner. Lachesis, the Allotter. Atropos, the Inflexible. I tempt your hate. But I ask of you, accept my offerings, though they are few. Please, Lady Fates, accept my pleas!"
Gray light filled the sigil's carvings, before illuminating the room. Three balls of light appeared, hovering above the sigil. The three balls began to take the shape of people. The one on the left was a young woman, the one in the middle was a middle-aged woman, and the one on the right was an elderly woman.
Percy bowed before them.
The young woman, Clotho, was the first to talk. "Perseus dear. You never write, you never call! How are you dear boy?"
"I'm doing fine." He said, cordially.
"You're eating enough? C'mere. Let me see you." The middle-aged woman, Lachesis said, looking him over.
"Yes, mothers. I am eating well." He said.
"Oh, dear. We were so worried about you. After the death of your siblings… well, we were glad that at least one of you survived." Atropos, the elderly woman said.
"Yeah, that was… that was not a good day. I only survived because of Artemis." he said, gesturing to her.
"Yes, that was a good thing you did." Lachesis said, turning to the mortal goddess. "Thank you."
Artemis blushed as the Fate addressed her. She had no idea what to do in this situation. She just bowed.
"I suspect this is no social call." Clotho said.
"You are correct." Percy said, talking more formally now as he stood up straight. "I request your help."
"Hmmm." Atropos turned to her sisters. "What do you say?"
"He has nice stuff." Lachesis said, picking up the Chimera head. She turned to Percy. "Good job, by the way."
"I agree sister-self." Clotho said.
All three turned to Percy. "You shall get one question for each of us."
Percy felt a bead of sweat roll down his neck. He took a breath and let it out. "Okay, first question, Clotho."
Thunder rumbled and with a flash of light, Clotho was standing in the middle of the three. "Yes, dear?"
"Artemis has been turned mortal. Is there any way to get her godhood back?" He asked.
"Zeus has the power to take and revoke, but he isn't the only one. Many beings could help, but most won't."
"Okay, so who would?"
"One question, dear." Clotho said.
"Sorry. Okay, second question, for Lachesis this time."
A clap of thunder and one flash of light later, Lachesis was standing in front of him. "Ask, my sweet."
"This being who can give Artemis her godhood back, who is it?"
"In the beginning, before there was time, there was Chaos. The being before time, before the Earth. Before Night. The Cosmic Egg, they used, and they can do anything."
"So, Chaos. The creator." Percy muttered to himself. "And where can we find Chaos?"
"One question, Perseus." Lachesis said.
"Sorry." He said again.
"Last question. For Atropos."
Another clap of thunder and flash of light and Atropos was standing in the middle. "What is it, son?"
"Where can we find Chaos?"
"Everything rose from Chaos. The sky, the earth, even Tartarus. Through the Cosmic Egg, the Creator can be met."
"What the hell does that mean?" He asked.
"YOU'RE OUT OF QUESTIONS!" The three Fates yelled in unison.
"Sorry, again." He said. "Thank you, mothers. You've been most helpful."
"Good luck Perseus. And, I'm sorry." Atropos said before the three women flashed out of the room, leaving the room in darkness. The torches came back to life, illuminating the room. The Chimera's head and pelt was gone.
Percy sighed and turned to Artemis. "Well, that was kind of helpful."
Artemis was staring at the spot the Fates had been only moments before.
"Artemis?" Percy snapped his fingers in front of her face.
Slowly, she turned to him. "I can become immortal again." She said softly, a grin spreading across her face.
"Yeah, you can." He said.
Artemis rushed forward and hugged him.
Percy hugged her back as she squeezed him. "Thank you." She whispered in his ear, before turning her head and placing a kiss on his cheek and pulling away.
She turned away, missing Percy's flaming red cheeks, distracted by her own.
Once Percy got his cheeks under control, he cleared his throat. "We still have to, you know, go find that Cosmic Egg, whatever the hell that is, and then convince Chaos to help us."
Artemis started to walk up the stairs. Percy followed behind her. "Well, the Chaos Egg is a legend among Orphic cults. Said to have birthed Chaos before it created everything. It's said that the remains of the egg are found at the edge of Tartarus, where Chaos lies below it."
"So, we're gonna have to go to Tartarus?" Percy asked. "That's an insane idea. Like, that is crazy on all levels."
Artemis was silent.
"Because you mean Tartarus-Tartarus, right? Like, where monsters go to reform, Tartarus? Worse than the Fields of Punishment, Tartarus?"
They reached the top of the stairs and headed into the kitchen. Percy sat down at the table, where he had had the talk with Apollo the night before. Artemis sat across from him.
"So that's your plan?" Percy asked. "To go to Tartarus?"
"What other choice do we have?" Artemis asked. Her voice was barely a whisper, but it contained so much desperation, she might as well have been the Goddess of it.
"I don't know." Percy's voice was quiet. "It's not like Zeus gave you a task. Bound you to someone."
"Then this is our plan." She said. "We'll go to Chaos and ask him to restore me to Godhood."
"And what if it says no? Why would the creator just… give away immortality?"
"Percy, why are you being so cynical about this?! This is a chance, and you… you just… what, can't accept it?!"
"I'm being realistic, Artemis." Percy sighed. His voice was level. "It's not like Gods do things out of the goodness of their hearts. Why would this specific one break the mold?"
Artemis flinched. "Then I'll go myself." she said, standing up. She walked out of the room with her head held high.
"Artemis!" Percy called. Only to receive the sound of her footsteps receding in response.
He sighed and looked at the wall. He covered his mouth with his hand and rubbed his chin. Why couldn't she see the insanity of this plan? Going to the Underworld and then Tartarus, just to meet a Deity who wouldn't even give them the time of day.
He stood up and let out a long, exasperated breath. He walked out of the temple. Artemis was sitting by the dead fire pit, her arms wrapped around her legs. Her face was down. "Artemis."
She didn't look up.
"Look, Artemis. I'm sorry. I just…" He didn't know where to go with his thoughts. He didn't know how to convey his thoughts. "Look. I'm your Guardian, Artemis. I'm going to follow you anywhere right now. While you're mortal. So, if you decide to go, I am going to go with you. I might think this is a stupid idea, but I'm still going to be by your side."
Artemis looked up at him. He walked over to her and sat down next to her.
"You'll go to Tartarus for me?"
"With you." He corrected.
She smiled.
"And yeah, I guess I would go for you too." He tilted his head back to make eye contact and smiled at her.
"Thank you." She said softly.
Percy was silent as his oath ran through his head. 'I swear to protect the Goddess Artemis. For she is my charge, she is my duty. Her life is my own. My loyalty is to her above all else. This I swear.' He hated his oath. It caused him to end up in stupid situations and having to fight what felt like the entire world. But he also loved his oath, because he couldn't imagine doing those things for anyone else. It gave him a purpose in life. It gave him a reason to be around this wonderful woman.
"So, how are we getting to the Underworld? Do we just… grab a shovel and start digging?" Percy asked.
Artemis giggled and rolled her eyes affectionately. "There's an entrance in Los Angeles."
Percy stared at her. "Artemis. I have been living in these woods for four thousand years-" He gestured around them. "-What the fuck is a Los Angeles?"
Artemis erupted in a full-on laughter. "I keep forgetting that you are never on the same page as everyone else. Los Angeles is a city far away from here. It's where the Underworld moved to when we moved to America."
"Artemis…"
She kept laughing. "America is the country we're in. The current torch of Western Civilization is here, for now."
"Okay, I think I'm following." Percy said. "So, how are we going to get to this… Los Angeles?"
"I don't think flying would be the best idea. Zeus might sense you and then shoot you down."
"Right. Because I shouldn't be alive."
"So, you know about flying?" Artemis asked.
"I mean, I assume you're talking about the metal bird things that I see in the sky all the time?"
"A plane, yeah."
"So, what do we do then?"
"I guess…" Artemis paused. "I guess we're going on a road trip."
A/N. Yes, the cosmic egg is apparently something Orphic cults believe in. So yeah.
RANT TIME! So, I got a waffle iron for Christmas (Be jealous of me.) I brought it to school today with ingredients, and you know who didn't get a waffle? ME! The waffle Chef, didn't get to taste his own waffles! And then, one of my friends got a little mad that he didn't get one, and I'm just like, 'Bro, I ain't get one either. The whole reason I brought the damn thing' but anyways. So I'm gonna post this and then go make myself a waffle.
Like I said, I'll post the next chapter in a day or two, to make sure people don't miss this chapter by accident :)
Thank you to Zaeng_ for betaing this.
