Another Life

Chapter 3

"Ben?" I asked confused and worried when I opened the door, Cal was half asleep leaning against him.
"Grace and Olive weren`t home. I tried calling Grace, dad and mom but neither picked up, then we drove to our parent`s house because I thought they might have crashed there as it`s closer to the airport and they left us the car at the airport, but the house is empty too."
"And neither of them texted us after they arrived." I finished. This wasn`t just weird, it was concerning.
"We should get dressed." I said looking at me and Jared. Round two of celebrating our engagement was put on hold for now.
We returned a few minutes later with a plan. "Jared`s going to the precinct and will see what he can find out, I`ll go back to the airport, make sure they aren`t still there and you take Cal home in case they show up."
"I need to do something Mick."
"No." Jared said sternly. "You need to take your son home, put him to bed and cover home base. Call us if you hear anything."
"Fine." He muttered.
"Are you okay Cal?" I asked him concerned. He didn`t look good.
"Yeah, just tired." He answered.

I took a cab to the airport and once I arrived I checked the board first. It didn`t show an arrival time for MA 537, instead it read see agent. "See agent?" I whispered to myself confused. This couldn`t be good. There were so many people at the desk I had to used my badge to walk through them. "Excuse me, I`m NYPD!" I squeezed past them to get to the front of the crowd.

"Excuse me, NYPD, I`m Officer Stone I need information concerning flight MA 537?"
"There is a search operation in progress."
"A search operation?" I asked getting more worried every second.
"Yes Miss."
"A search operation, does that mean the plane is lost?"
"I`m afraid so. I`m sorry."
"What happened? Why is the plane lost?"
"I don`t have any more information at the time, but I assure you, we`re doing everything we can."
"What are you doing? Tell me what`s going on." I insisted.
"Please Miss, that`s all the information I`ve got at this time."
"That`s crap and you know it." I wasn`t an officer at the moment, I was a daughter, an aunt, a sister-in-law, I was driven by my emotions.
"We`re doing everything we can!"
"But what are you doing and what do you already know?" I tried again.
"Listen Miss,"
"Officer." I correct him. "With all due respect, I know you`re not telling me everything you know."
"With all due respect Officer, I`m ground personnel. I don`t know anything else!"
"Then find me someone who can!" I said desperately then turned around to ring Jared.

"J, the plane`s lost. Were you able to get more information?"
"It looks like the plane disappeared from the radar about 2 hours after its departure."
"Did anything unusual happen before that?"
"Not that they are aware off."
"Jared, can you come to the airport?"
"I`m already in the car and on my way."
"Thanks."
Tonight night was supposed to go differently. I sniffed, how often did a plane that disappeared from the radar return? I couldn`t think of a single case.
"Mick? It`ll be okay." He tried to assure me after he heard me sniff. "I love you."
"I love you too." I couldn't wait to be back in his arms. He was my rock, already when Evie died and I was, still am so grateful to have him by my side.
"I`ll be with you in about 30 minutes. Stay put, okay?" We hung up and I saw an incoming call from Ben. What was I supposed to tell him? The plane disappeared but they don`t know why and where exactly?
I didn`t answer, I needed a minute to compose myself first and promised myself to ring him back in a few minutes.

"Miss? Are you okay?" I must have gotten lost in thoughts, I found myself crouching down against a wall. I`m not sure how much time has passed. I looked up and saw an MA employee.
"Yes, thank you. I`m waiting for news regarding flight MA 537. Most of my family is on that plane."
"I`m so sorry." The honesty in the employees' eyes was shocking. She didn`t add "for my loss." But I could see it in her eyes that there was no hope.
"Is someone coming to get you?" I nod. "Yes, thanks. I`m fine I`ll just wait for my fiancé."
