Chapter 6
The weeks passed too quickly and in slow motion at the same time. No sign of the missing plane was found and certainty that the passengers were dead got bigger with every passing day.
Meanwhile Cal`s bloodwork got worse weekly and they were out of options to treat him. All they could do was keep him stable for now and make him as comfortable as possible.
On many days he was well and happy, Michaela spent all of her free time with the boy and used her vacation time for days Ben needed help with him. We hardly ever knew what Ben was doing while she was with Cal.
"My parents will be in town next weekend. I`d like us to have dinner with them. Are you up for it?"
"Yes, of course." She didn`t sound sure.
"You don`t have to, I understand if you don`t feel up to it Mick."
"No, I`d like to see your parents, we haven't seen them in so long."
"Okay, they want to see you too. Especially mom can`t wait for us to get married." That brought a smile on her face. I haven't seen that in too long. "I can`t get married right now though."
"I know and there`s no rush. I just wanted you to know that they are very happy that you will be part of our family legally too."
"I`m very happy to become a part of your family legally too. They are all really great."
"Micah will be there too."
"Good, have you heard from Tara? What is she up to these days?" Micah, my brother, was only 2 years younger than myself, came to New York 2 years after I did and was working as a teacher. Tara, our sister, is another 6 years younger and hasn`t found her passion yet.
"Mom said she`s started some kind of medical training. She`s not exactly sure what though, she`ll pick something new next month anyhow."
"Where does she live? Still in Chicago?"
"No, I think she moved to Philadelphia actually."
"I`ve never been there. We should go sometime."
"Are you really up for a trip?"
"Not right now, but eventually I will be. It`d be nice to see more of the US."
"We`ll do that then. We can follow Tara in every city she moves. We`ll get around a lot." He grinned. They haven't spoken about their future since the plane disappeared. "Maybe not every city. Only the good ones." She answered. "And only the ones we can reach without stepping foot into a plane."
Was she never going to fly again? Most of his family lives in Florida. It`ll be difficult to travel there if she rules out flying forever. But time will tell and I`ll respect her wishes.
"What do you want to do tonight?" I chose to change the subject instead. It was still too early to address that specific topic.
"I don`t know."
"How about we go out for dinner and a movie? Something normal, something different."
"Yes okay."
"Really?" I asked surprised.
It was hard to believe, I didn`t think she`d go for something out of the house. I expected her to want to stay in but going out was great. I feared her tendencies for depression. The way she was after Evie died, it was almost unbearable to watch the way she punished herself because she felt she was guilty. She didn`t allow herself to feel the slightest bit of pleasure back then.
I wasn`t sure if she hadn`t returned to that state because she was focussing on Cal or because she was stronger this time and didn`t have anything to feel guilty about. The grieve must be at least as strong, most likely worse.
"Yes. It might help keep my mind of things. And an evening for just us, I think we both need that badly." The sadness never left her eyes these days but this was a genuine smile.
"I know I do." I pecked her lips, I understood and I support her priorities but I still miss us. Jared and Michaela, the couple, the lovers, best friends. The last few weeks we weren`t intimate because Michaela didn`t give me any signs she wanted to be and I didn`t want to push her but I really needed to feel her, badly.
"And after dinner and the movie perhaps you could help me lose these cloths." She grinned and kissed me passionately. "And I`ll help you lose yours." Was she a mind reader now?
"Lets go so we get back fast." I laughed.
"Let me get changed first."
"Red dress?"
"Alright." She winked at me. What was going on with her today? I wouldn`t ask, I`d simply enjoy being Michaela and Jared tonight.
