The more Tessa tried to find a piece of information, the sooner she lost them. It was as if she knew it exactly, it was already on the tip of her tongue, but an opaque wall kept her from picking up the information.
However, being with Jem made things easier. Whenever someone asked her something, Jem gave her the answer she was missing. It was like replacing her brain.
It was incredible how well he still knew her after all these years. When asked about her personally, he still knew the answer from before, strange how little her personality had changed in her old age. When asked about her life, it was probably Will's letters to his best friend that gave him the answers.
And there were questions about their current situation.
Both of them avoided a clear answer on that matter.
Not because they didn't know what they were to each other, but because it was hard to explain to anyone.
How could anyone understand that Tessa loved Will and Jem equally? That her love for Jem is in no way a betrayal of her late husband? Even if she never mentioned those feelings for Jem in their marriage, Will always knew they were there. He would have been happy to know that they would both be reunited after his death. He had probably even striven for the hope of it.
Will often came across as arrogant to the outside world, but he was a really good person. He showed almost no empathy unless it concerned someone in his heart. Strangers only interested him in the broadest sense. However, he had the ability to never change his mind about a heart person. When someone managed to touch his heart, Will loved them in a way that was irrevocable and endless. There was nothing that he would not have done for these people. And their opinions were as important to him as the opinions of others were irrelevant.
That's how she knew he just wanted to see Tessa and Jem happy. He probably wouldn't have confided in anyone but Jem. Jem who had held her heart before.
But it wasn't just people's understanding that kept the two from going public with their newfound relationship.
It had been almost a decade since Tessa could feel that closeness to anyone, and for Jem it was even longer.
So they enjoyed the time they had before Tessa wasn't Tessa anymore.
Just the two of them, in a bubble of togetherness.
Which soon threatened to burst.
