A.N: Hello again, everyone! It's that time of year again: Naegiri Week! This will be my third participation in this great event, and I'm really looking forward to posting my entries! This is the first one for the prompt Overtime. I hope you enjoy reading it!
Day One: Taking my Shot (Literally)
To be honest, I had no idea what I was doing here. My talent was Ultimate Detective, and I was proud of my trade. I preferred to work in peace and quiet, finding myself most efficient then. So much cheering and clapping were, I found, particularly annoying.
"Gimme the ball, Leon!" I heard Hina exclaim at the baseball player.
It was the beginning of summer. Temperatures had quickly risen, and all across Japan, high schoolers chose to hang out with their friends outside to play various sports and have fun. Not that I had anything against it. After all, anyone was free to make their own decisions.
However, things became troublesome when an idea came to Jin Kirigiri's head. "What if," he thought. "Hope's Peak Academy organized sports tournaments against other schools in Tokyo!"
A month later, Class 78th was in the basketball tournament finals, facing a class from another school I had not bothered to remember the name of. Both teams were deadlocked, with our opponents leading by a point. For the last two minutes, we had been unable to score the go-ahead basket. The game clock showed twenty seconds remaining in overtime.
Somehow, our P.E. teacher had thought it wise to put me in the game at this crucial moment. Given, I am an above-average athlete with quick reflexes. But I barely knew the rules of basketball. If it weren't for Mondo getting ejected and Mukuro having fouled out, I would be sitting on the bench.
It would have suited me just fine. My place was everywhere but on the court.
"Damn, get open, guys!" Hina told us, quickly getting double-teamed. It made sense, considering she had scored 34 of our team's 87 points. "M-Makoto!"
"G-Got it!" Makoto said, catching the ball in an uncomfortable position. I watched him from behind the three-point line, well-hidden in the corner, as he drove inside the paint, thanks to a screen from Sakura.
I saw our classmates on the bench and everyone in the audience on their feet, fingers crossed, as Makoto somehow kept his dribble alive through the pressure. I felt bad for him, being forced into the spotlight. He was the sole focus of everyone, both on and off the court.
The clock was ticking, and at this rate, the game was lost. Time was playing against us. Not that I really cared since these sports tournaments didn't mean much to me if anything at all.
But still. It would be a waste to have gone so far only to lose now.
Makoto stopped on a dime, using his pivot foot to look for options. The defense was surrounding him, giving him no breathing room. I could see Hina and Leon desperately trying to get open, to no avail. Standing from the corner, I could see the sweat dripping from Makoto's forehead.
I knew him well. He was scared of leading our team to defeat. However, there wasn't much he could do in his position to prevent it. A quick glance at the clock showed only five seconds remained.
"Grrrr... K-Kyoko, catch!"
My eyes widened.
The ball moved towards me in slow motion. Under the gloves, my burnt hands felt ironically cold. What the hell was this boy thinking? In what world was passing the ball to me a good decision? I may have been wide open, but there was a good reason for that!
I knew next to nothing about basketball. I was barely able to dribble the ball properly and shoot lay-ups. Needless to say, I was the wrong person to pass the ball to at such a crucial moment in such an important game.
When the ball touched my hands, I had to put every ounce of focus into not dropping it. Suddenly, everything around me was silent, and the world, save for the ball and the basket, turned black and white. The other team's shooting guard was running at me.
My eyes met Makoto's, and he gave me a sorry smile.
The little punk.
He was lucky I had those feelings for him.
There was no escaping it, unfortunately. Nothing else I could do but shoot the ball. The few meters that separated me from the basket felt like whole miles. My legs bent, and my arms shot up.
The ball left my hands at some point. My eyes followed its course to the basket without any hope. It was clear our opponents were satisfied with me taking the last shot. The audience went quiet. I appreciated the peace, even if I knew it was only the calm before the storm.
I saw my classmates on the bench. Only a few looked hopeful. I understood and would not hold it against them. My teammates on the court looked up at the basket.
I had thrown the ball randomly. There was no chance it would ever go in. My talent is Ultimate Detective, not Ultimate Basketball Player, after all.
But it did.
The buzzer went off, echoing inside the gymnasium loudly and signaling the end of the game. I watched with widening eyes as the orange ball cleanly went through the net. I could only ask myself how.
"Kyokoooooooo!" I saw Makoto run at me with amazement in his eyes. I stood there, unsure of what was happening, as the crowd erupted into cheers. He jumped in my arms, the smile on his face even broader than usual. "I love you so much!"
"W-What the-?!"
Makoto tackled me and hugged me tightly. His chest pressed against mine, and the proximity brought a hot blush to my cheeks. It was then I realized I had somehow hit the shot to win the tournament.
"Kyoko! You're the best!"
"Yeah, Kyoko! You rock!"
"Kyoko! Kyoko! Kyoko!"
Everyone started to chant my name as they crowded around me, trapping me in Makoto's arms. I sighed, coming to terms with the fact that I was possibly the least excited person inside this gym.
It took everyone a minute to give me some space. I received some slaps on the back as my classmates went to shake our opponenents' hands. I could still hear my name being chanted from the stands, which I honestly cared very little for.
"You're awesome, Kyoko! Even at basketball!" Makoto stood before me, the smile on his lips refusing to subside. "I'd kiss you if I weren't so sweaty!"
At this moment, I realized he had probably passed me some of his luck along with the ball. I shook my head. Deep inside, even if I didn't really care, seeing the class so thrilled made me happy. Makoto, in particular, was over the moon.
"Then hurry up and go take a shower."
I still have no idea how I managed to say this without even realizing it. Oh, well.
The End.
A.N: Thank you for reading this entry! At first, I thought of interpreting the prompt as "working overtime," but then realized this would probably not be very original, so I changed my mind. I thought it could be cute. Hopefully, you found it so! Please leave a review, and I'll see you tomorrow for the second day!
